Huawei Honor 9X Pro: review of characteristics and capabilities

This is not the first Honor smartphone with a catchy rear panel design, but the first with a retractable front camera. It also has a 48-megapixel photosensor and a wide-angle lens, but no NFC. In this review of Honor 9X Premium, we will find out what could prevent the new product from becoming a bestseller.

The predecessor of the new product, Honor 8X (our review here) was at one time the best-selling smartphone with a large screen in Russia and was among the top three in online sales. The new generation of X-series devices consists of two models: Honor 9X and Honor 9X Premium (which is what we got for testing). The “premium” version received more RAM (6 GB versus 4 GB) and a third, ultra-wide-angle camera in the rear photo module. However, unlike the basic edition, it does not have an NFC interface. Just like the joke from the 90s - if you wash your hands with soap, you will drink tea without sugar.

Review of Huawei Honor 9X Premium: design, ergonomics

For the latest models of the “youth” brand, glass cases with gradients and linear tints are now trending.

Tens of thousands of microscopic prisms on the back of the Honor 9X Premium refract light, and when the angle changes, they create the effect of the “X” symbol moving. Compared to its predecessor, Honor 8X, the new product looks more impressive.

For the glossy surface of the Honor 9X Premium, two colors were provided - midnight black and sapphire blue (we got the device in the latter color for testing). The case is not generally certified to IPXX for protection against dust and moisture. With overall dimensions of 163.5x77.3x8.8 mm, the weight of the smartphone is 196.8 g.

The frames around the display, which occupies about 91% of the front surface, are narrower than those of the Honor 8X. After the front camera moved to a retractable module, there was no need for a spacious “bang”. The smartphone comes with a protective film for the screen covered with glass with a 2.5D effect.

The decorative speaker grille was placed end-to-end between the front panel and the top end.

Three on-screen touch control buttons (“Back”, “Home” and “Recent applications”), which can easily be supplemented with a fourth in the settings, can be replaced with gestures if desired.

The left rib was left empty.

And on the right they placed equally thin, but very different in size, volume rocker and power/lock button.

The manufacturer emphasizes that the power button mechanism was tested for 200 thousand operations, and the sound control key for 50 thousand, with a maximum load of up to 70 kg.

The retractable front camera module and the hole for an additional microphone are located on the upper end of the smartphone in the company of a closed slot with a tray for two places, one of which is specifically designed for the subscriber identification module (nanoSIM), and the other is suitable for either a microSD memory card or a second nanoSIM .

The linear stepper motor fully extends the selfie camera module quite slowly - in about one second, accompanying this process with a sound effect (if selected in the settings).

At the presentation of the Honor 9X smartphones, it was stated that the retractable module was equipped with intelligent fall protection technology (based on signals from sensors), and was also protected from moisture and dust (without details).

In addition, the testing process included rather harsh mechanical stress. For example, the front camera must retain the functions of extending and shooting after a pressure of 15 kg is applied to it.

The USB Type-C (USB 2.0) connector at the bottom is surrounded by a decorative speaker grille, a microphone hole and a 3.5 mm audio headset connector.

The back panel is decorated with the Honor logo, and from the accompanying text you can find out the model number, company name and country of manufacture of the smartphone.

In the upper left part there is a rear photo module with an LED flash, while its three lenses fit into a vertical island protrusion, which is accompanied by the inscription AI Camera. The place for the touch pad of the capacitive fingerprint scanner was found slightly lower, in the center.

It is clear that the slippery and easily soiled glass surface of the case quickly becomes untidy. So the clip case included in the kit will allow you to more securely hold the smartphone in the palm of your hand, making its appearance, although less impressive, but more neat.

The footage of the device being dropped is, of course, impressive, but it’s still not worth doing this yourself, even if you rely on the case.

Huawei Honor 9i review

The Huawei sub-brand represented by the Honor brand has recently been releasing really high-quality smartphones. Honor 8 Pro, which was released earlier this year, became the main competitor to the flagship OnePlus 5, and managed to surpass it in several ways. This phone offered impressive features and functions for its price. Since the mobile market is gradually turning towards displays with an aspect ratio of 18:9, the manufacturer was forced to respond by introducing Honor 9i. But not only the screen is an interesting feature of this smartphone. The model is also equipped with four cameras at once, which makes the device truly unique. Although the characteristics look impressive on paper, will they be able to perform well in real conditions? Let's try to get an answer!

Design

If you like phones with huge displays and thin bezels, then you'll definitely like the Honor 9i. It is equipped with a large 5.9-inch display that occupies almost the entire front side. But there is no need to be afraid of the physical dimensions of the device in advance - thanks to the 18:9 aspect ratio, the dimensions of this model approximately coincide with the dimensions of 5.5-inch smartphones with conventional “thick” frames. The presence of such a massive screen means moving the earpiece, sensors and front camera right to the top edge of the case. The fingerprint scanner is located at the back, so the front panel of the device is completely free of all unnecessary things.

Since the gadget has curved edges, it feels comfortable in the hand. Honor 9i is pleasant to use thanks to its all-metal body. Although the device looks great in black, it still manages to attract fingerprints. The phone is also a little slippery and needs to be held carefully in your hand. The dual camera module on the back side protrudes a few millimeters, but there is a metal rim around it that should protect the lens from scratches. At the back there is not only a dual camera, but also an LED flash, as well as a fingerprint scanner (exactly in the center). At the same time, not everyone will be able to reach the fingerprint sensor while holding the phone with one hand. Honor 9i has a MicroUSB port for charging and data transfer. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack and there are also multimedia speakers on both sides. The smartphone comes complete with a charger, headphones and a silicone case.

Characteristics

The first thing that attracts attention about the Honor 9i is its huge display. The smartphone is equipped with a 5.9-inch screen with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and a resolution of 2160 by 1080 pixels (FHD+). Viewing angles are very good, but color saturation is a little lacking. In this case, the user can independently change the color temperature, but the contrast cannot be adjusted. The display is bright enough indoors. The display is protected by tempered glass from an unknown manufacturer, and a protective film is also pre-installed to combat scratches. The next thing you will definitely notice is the four cameras on the back. There are two cameras on each side. The main rear and front cameras have 16-megapixel and 13-megapixel sensors, respectively. And they are complemented by 2-megapixel secondary modules, which are used to capture depth information, as well as when turning on portrait mode. The user receives an LED flash not only on the back, but also a soft flash on the front side of the device. In terms of hardware, the Honor 9i is powered by a Kirin 659 processor with eight Cortex-A53 cores (four cores running at 1700 MHz and the other four at 2360 MHz). There is 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of built-in storage, which is expandable thanks to a hybrid slot for two SIM cards. Although the device supports two Nano-SIM cards at once, the second SIM card can be replaced with a MicroSD card up to 128 GB. The device has a 3340 mAh battery, which is slightly above average by the standards of modern smartphones.

Shell and software

The smartphone uses the proprietary EMUI 5.1 user interface, which is installed on top of the Android Nougat operating system. Huawei has applied its own unique visual style, and there are several new options in the Settings app. There is support for gestures for taking screenshots and launching programs. For example, if you double-click, you can take a screenshot of the display. Such a large display is not very suitable for one-handed use, as the top corners are difficult to reach with standard finger lengths. It is noteworthy that the device has a special one-handed mode integrated into it, which reduces the screen size to optimal values. Another problem with 18:9 displays is that not all applications are optimized for this format. At the same time, it is possible to run such programs in compatibility mode with a black bar at the bottom. If you want to avoid stripes, you should use scaling, which adjusts the size of the application to the screen. The device has a lot of pre-installed software. Particularly worth highlighting are HiCare - a support application, HiGame - a store with games, as well as Hi Honor and Honor Community, which are web links. The EMUI shell supports themes that make it possible to change the appearance of the interface.

Performance, autonomy

The performance of Honor 9i is on par with other devices in this price category. The smartphone managed to score about 61,000 points in the AnTuTu benchmark, as well as 915 and 3460 points, respectively, in single-core and multi-core modes of Geekbench 4. The gadget does not heat up while performing everyday tasks, but after playing games the heating is still felt. On such a large screen it is very pleasant to play games and watch movies. As for gaming capabilities, Real Racing 3 and Prime Peaks functioned without any brakes during the testing period. But the Clash Royale game was only able to be launched on an enlarged scale, so the sides were cut off. If you monitor the charge level, you will notice high energy consumption when playing. When performing simpler tasks, the smartphone manages power quite well. If you use the device moderately intensively, the charge should be enough for the whole day. But gaming and watching videos have a significant impact on battery life. When watching HD movies, the battery lasts about 9 hours. You can use the power saving mode, which instantly disables background processes and synchronization. But, unfortunately, the smartphone does not support any fast charging technology.

Cameras

An important feature of the Honor 9i lies in its cameras. If you launch the camera application, you can enjoy a simple interface, where on the one hand there are standard photo and video settings, and on the other - quick functions. It is possible to control flash modes, aperture, moving image function and portrait shooting. Motion photos are implemented in a similar way to Live Photos on iOS, where a short clip is recorded along with a still frame. On the right side is an access list for various shooting modes. In addition to HDR, panorama and video, you get truly professional modes not only for taking photos, but also for recording videos. It is also worth noting a variety of filters, effects, slow motion and other functions. If you wish, you can download even more interesting settings. Pro mode gives you the ability to customize various settings such as ISO, shutter speed, exposure, focus and white balance. The main camera allows you to shoot in advanced RAW format. The standard automatic mode sets up the camera correctly in the vast majority of cases. The rear 16-megapixel camera captures a large amount of detail when creating macro and landscape photography. An additional 2-megapixel camera allows you to separate the subject and background in portrait and widescreen modes, as well as implement fashionable blur. The selfie camera can also create a bokeh effect, and at times it does it even better than the main one. And different jewelry makes it possible to smooth out the skin and remove imperfections. In low light, pictures are of average quality. This is not to say that there is too much noise, but there is a noticeable delay in autofocus operation, as well as a loss in image detail. The smartphone is able to record videos with a resolution of 1080p, and this applies to both cameras.

Conclusion

Obviously, many manufacturers are now trying to promote devices with an aspect ratio of 18:9. And this is no longer limited exclusively to flagship devices. And thanks to Honor 9i, buyers receive a relatively inexpensive but advanced smartphone with progressive functionality. This model has an almost perfect balance of characteristics and price. There is a fingerprint scanner, which is missing in the LG G6, and there is a display with FHD+ resolution, although the screen in the same Vivo V7+ has a simpler matrix (720p). The Kirin processor is good enough for everyday tasks and the software is easy to use. This phone only lacks a few improvements related to the camera and battery.

Pros: • Great build • Stunning screen • Front flash • Functional OS

Cons: • Insufficiently powerful battery • Fairly average main camera • No fast charging

Huawei Honor 9X Premium review: screen

Compared to Honor 8X, Honor 9X Premium has a slightly larger screen diagonal (from 6.5 inches to 6.59 inches). In addition, it now has no cutout (“bangs”) in the upper part, which is emphasized in its name - FullView. At the maximum resolution FHD+ (2340x1080 pixels), the pixel density per inch is approximately 391 ppi. The matrix itself is made using LTPS IPS technology. At the presentation of the device, it was noted that a certain proprietary Honor HiAce algorithm is used to expand the dynamic range of the image.

It is proposed to adjust the screen brightness manually or use the “Auto” option. On the “Color Mode and Temperature” tab with a graphic circle and three presets (“Default”, “Warm”, “Cool”) you select the desired color temperature. There are two options for the color scheme - “Vivid” and “Normal”. TÜV Rheinland certified vision protection mode reduces eye strain in low light conditions. It is activated forcibly or according to a schedule. In this case, the intensity of the blue filter (“color temperature”) is independently adjusted in the “warm-cold” range.

In the settings, in addition to the “simple” mode with larger icons and text, it is possible to switch between two screen styles - normal and with a separate application menu, when you do not need to place all program icons on the desktops. The screen resolution FHD+ (2340×1080 pixels) can be easily changed to a lower one – HD+ (1560×720 pixels). Selecting the “Smart Resolution” option has a positive effect on energy saving.

Huawei Honor 9X Premium review: cameras

The rear photo module of the “premium” version of Honor 9X, in addition to the LED flash, includes a trio of cameras.

The main sensor with a 48-megapixel sensor (optical size 1/2-inch, pixel up to 1.6 microns) and a wide-angle lens (aperture f/1.8, phase detection autofocus) is responsible for the shooting itself, and a 2-megapixel auxiliary sensor (lens aperture f/2.4) helps her map the depth of field. Let us recall that the 48-megapixel sensor uses a quad Bayer color filter (Quad Bayer), when 0.8-μm photodiodes for one color can be combined into groups of four (2x2), forming 1.6-μm pixels (Super Pixel) and a 12-megapixel image .

For an ultra-wide-angle camera that provides a viewing angle of 120 degrees, we settled on an 8-megapixel sensor and a corresponding lens (13 mm EGF, f/2.4 aperture).

A 16-megapixel sensor was placed on the retractable photo module, complemented by a wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture and fixed focus. Just like the main one, this camera received support for AI functions. The sound when the module moves can be activated in the settings, and the screen backlight can be used as a flash.

Icons at the top of the Camera app screen let you choose the flash, activate AI features, or go to settings. At the bottom of the viewfinder there are icons for the main modes, selected by horizontal swipes - “Aperture”, “Night”, “Portrait”, “Photo”, “Video” and “More” (go to additional modes), including “Pro” ), HDR, “Filter”, “Slow-motion” and others. To switch between the main camera and the “wide” camera, the “1x” and “Wide” icons are provided on the viewfinder. You can digitally zoom up to six times. In Photo mode, exposure and focus metering points may vary. The brightness of the image is changed by vertical swipes (down or up) next to the focus circle.

Using the “Filter”, you can apply one of the eight available effects to the image (including “Valencia”, “Nostalgia”, “Dawn”, etc.), and also adjust its intensity (range 1-32). The professional photo mode provides manual adjustment of parameters such as exposure metering method, ISO value, shutter speed, exposure compensation level, focusing method, and white balance. In the “Night” mode, the same as, as they say, in, for example, the flagship Honor 20 Pro (our review here), independent changes in shutter speed and light sensitivity are allowed. In portrait mode, it is suggested to use not only the “beautifier”, but also select the background blur effect.

Video shooting for both photo modules is limited to FHD quality (1920x1080 pixels, 16:9) with a frame rate of 30 fps. At the same time, for the main camera you can increase the frequency to 60 fps. Note that AIS stabilization only works for HD video (720p). Compatibility of the received recordings is ensured by the standard H.264/AVC codec, and file size reduction is ensured by H.265/HEVC (the required is selected in the settings). Thus, all content is saved in MP4 container files (AVC or HEVC - video, AAC - audio). Short 16x super slow-motion video recording (480 fps) is available only in HD resolution.

The main 48-megapixel camera produces good shots even in low light conditions. The dedicated night mode did not disappoint in performance either. But shooting at super-wide, especially in the autumn twilight, somehow did not impress. Examples of photos from the rear camera duo can be viewed here.

Huawei Honor 9X Premium review: sound

Huawei Histen proprietary algorithms are in store for wired headphones, and automatic configuration will be helped by indicating the type of audio accessory being connected. Having abandoned the imitation of deep 3D surround sound (“close”, “front”, “surround”, “maximum”), you can choose natural or normal mode. In the latter case, you also have access to a 10-band equalizer with bass boost, five presets and individual settings. Note that the standard Music application plays high-quality audio files with the FLAC extension. However, the “multimedia” speaker sounds loud, but rather average.

The Voice Recorder program writes conversations into M4A files, and at the same time, it can leave tags (quick tags) on these recordings. But to operate a simple FM tuner without the ability to record broadcasts, you will need a wired audio headset as a shortwave antenna. There is no aptX among the available Bluetooth codecs. So you'll have to settle for SBC or AAC.

Review of Huawei Honor 9X Premium: hardware, performance

Under the hood, the Honor 9X Premium has essentially the same SoC as its predecessor, the Honor 8X, the HiSilicon Kirin 710F. It is designed for mid-range devices and is designed to meet 12 nm design standards. The processor, which includes two quartets of cores - four ARM Cortex-A73 (2.2 GHz) and four Cortex-A53 (1.7 GHz), works in tandem with an ARM Mali-G51 MP4 graphics accelerator. The mobile platform includes Wi-Fi 802.11ac, LTE Cat.12/Cat.13 and Bluetooth 4.2, and the basic configuration is complemented by 6 GB of RAM. Note that the version of the smartphone for China uses a more recent and powerful Kirin 810 processor.

The results of synthetic tests turned out to be quite expected for a middle-class device. So, of course, you shouldn’t count on high settings in “heavy” games. For some reason, the 3DMark test with Vulkan API support kept throwing an error, so I had to limit myself to OpenGL ES 3.1 only.

Note that the GPU Turbo 3.0 technology supported by the smartphone accelerates graphics processing for two dozen popular gaming applications, including Fortnite, Real Racing 3, Into the Dead 2, FIFA Mobile, Minecraft, Subway Surfers, etc.

Honor 9X Premium has 128 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded with a microSD/HC/XC card with a maximum capacity of up to 512 GB. Let us remind you that the card in this case will take the place of the second subscriber identification module of the nanoSIM format (4FF). If you have a USB-OTG adapter, it is easy to connect not only a regular, but also an SMI flash drive to your smartphone.

Two nanoSIM cards work with one radio channel in DSDS (Dual SIM Dual Standby) mode, and among the FDD-LTE frequency ranges there are b3 (1,800 MHz), b7 (2,600 MHz) and b20 (800 MHz). The smartphone has a mobile terminal category defined - LTE Cat.4 (DL), which allows 4G networks to reach speeds of up to 150 Mbit/s. The wireless communications suite also includes Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz) and Bluetooth 4.2 interfaces. Unlike Honor 8X and even the regular Honor 9X, the “premium” version of the “nine”, alas, does not have an NFC interface. So you can forget about contactless payment services with it.

GPS and GLONASS satellite systems are used to determine precise location and navigation. The A-GPS mode provides assistance in coordination over cellular and Wi-Fi networks.

Huawei Honor 9X Premium review: autonomy

The capacity of the non-removable battery in Honor 9X Premium, compared to Honor 8X, has increased slightly - from 3,750 mAh to 4,000 mAh. The new smartphone comes with a regular 10-watt adapter (5 V/2 A). By the way, in the test kit we found a charger for some reason with a British BS1363 plug. In half an hour it is possible to fill about 25-30% of the battery. But to fill a discharged battery “under the neck”, you will have to spend almost three hours. After which the accumulated charge will be enough for 8 hours of games, or 24 hours of calls on 3G networks, or 13 hours of watching videos, or 120 hours of music playback. Playing a set of MP4 videos (hardware decoded) at full brightness every hour reduced the battery charge by about 9.3% (5 hour test). In general, you will hardly have to worry about recharging the Honor 9X Premium during the day.

In the settings of the “Battery” section, you are asked to select the appropriate energy saving mode, as well as use tips for optimizing energy consumption. When the battery level is low, it is recommended to switch to Ultra mode, where only selected programs are available.

Buying Huawei Honor 9X and 9X Pro on AliExpress

Traditionally, the best prices for phones from Chinese brands are offered by sellers on the leading Chinese trading platform AliExpress. To make it easier to monitor and compare prices for Huawei Honor 9X and 9X Pro, below are updated tables showing offers from highly rated sellers. These tables will help you buy Huawei Honor 9X and 9X Pro on AliExpess at the lowest price.

As a rule, in addition to the phones themselves, sellers offer kits with accessories: protective films, cases and memory cards. All tables on this page contain exclusively “pure” products without additional load - only the phones themselves (with the exception of sets with gifts that do not affect the overall price).

The tables show only new (not refurbished) products with free shipping. All prices are given in dollars, since the ruble exchange rate on AliExpress may change during the day.

The best deals for a given body color are highlighted in green. An "X" in a cell means that the offer either does not include a phone in that color, or all phones in that color are sold out.

To the right of the price, the maximum discount for coupons is indicated in small red text. To obtain detailed information, move your mouse cursor over it.

If you notice an error or inaccuracy in the tables, please report it to the address indicated at the bottom of the page.

Huawei Honor 9X Premium review: software features

The Honor 9X Premium smartphone runs on the Android 9.0 (Pie) operating system, the interface of which is replaced by the proprietary EMUI 9.1.0 shell. Let us remind you that in the launcher you are using it is easy to switch from the usual style of the desktop screen (all program shortcuts are collected on desktops) to a style with a separate menu (screen) of applications. A swipe from the top edge of the screen opens the notifications and quick settings panel, as well as the brightness slider and the music player panel (if running).

For system navigation, it is proposed to use either a regular virtual panel or gestures, supplementing them with a navigation button if desired. There are four combinations of virtual panel icons to choose from (“Back”, “Home”, “Recent Apps”, and “Call the notification panel and quick settings”), which are easy to hide.

The settings provide one-handed control of the smartphone, as well as movement options, after activation of which the sound of incoming calls, alarms and timers is muted, and the volume of their melodies/signals is reduced.

After registering the papillary finger patterns, it is proposed to use them to unlock the smartphone, as well as protect when accessing personal folders and applications. Using the touch pad of the fingerprint scanner, you can answer voice calls, turn off the alarm, open the notification panel, scroll through images, and activate photo or video shooting from the Camera application. Fingerprint registration is not required.

In this model, they didn’t bother with facial recognition to unlock the smartphone. This may be due to the slow pop-up front camera module.

Features and low prices of Honor 9X Pro

The Honor 9 X Pro will be based on the 7-nanometer Kirin 810 single-chip system, which was announced in early summer. This is the most powerful mid-range processor from the company from China. At the time of the release of the Honor 9X family of models, only one device on the market will have this platform installed.

The amount of RAM will be 6/8 GB. For data storage, users will receive a drive with a capacity of 128/256 GB, depending on the configuration. Work without recharging will be ensured by a capacious 4000 mAh battery. Support for fast charging using the proprietary SuperCharge standard will also be announced. In the Honor 9X Pro, its characteristics will be 5V/4.5 A (22.5 W), which not all Chinese phones can offer at a price of $300.

The Honor 9X configuration will also include an NFC chip. Out of the box, the model will run on EMUI 9.1 firmware, built on Android Pie software. You can also separately highlight Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz) and Bluetooth 5.0 adapters.

If you want to buy Honor 9X Pro at a profit, we recommend activating push notifications, thanks to which you will not miss the moment for a profitable purchase. The algorithm of our portal tracks the cost of the device on different sites, and as soon as the price drops, you will be the first to know about it. On Sintetiki Net you will find retailers on AliExpress from whom you can order the phone, as well as Russian and Ukrainian sellers if you want to buy the Honor 9X Pro smartphone locally, without wanting to wait for a package to be delivered from China to your city for several weeks.
