Samsung Galaxy One is the world's best smartphone, and here's why

Washing machines should be cared for in the same way as other household appliances. Otherwise, it will not serve as long as desired. Over time, errors will occur in the operation of any equipment that the owner will have to eliminate. For example, error 5E (SE) on a Samsung washing machine. It is not as scary as it may seem, but it is important to know what it means and how to act correctly when it occurs.

What does error 5E (SE) mean?

This error is clearly stated in the instructions for the washing machine. When a code consisting of the symbols SE or 5E appears on the display, the equipment notifies that it is not possible to drain water from the tank. Therefore, the washing process is forced to be interrupted. The error appears quite often, and in most cases you can fix it yourself, without even resorting to the help of specialists.

Note! On older models of Samsung machines, this problem may be indicated by a different code - E2. This applies to those devices that were produced before 2007. And this code should not be confused with E5, which indicates a problem with the heating element of the washing machine.

Lines of smartphones from Samsung. A sober look at the Galaxy A, M and S series

It is not easy for a modern buyer to choose a new smartphone. Even if, among all the variety, he has decided on a brand, a whole zoo of devices from a wide variety of lines awaits him, which sometimes overlap and even compete with each other.

Apple is the only company on the market with the most simple and understandable model range that does not need explanation. There is an iPhone and there is its serial number. The Pro console means maximum functionality; it is the company's flagship. The additional Max prefix only indicates the increased size of the Pro model. That's all. Yes, there is also a parallel SE line - this is the most affordable current iPhone. Available with a flagship processor in a previous generation body.

But when it comes to other brands, it seems that the manufacturer itself no longer fully understands what is happening and which line to include the next new product. Samsung is no exception in this regard.

And in this article we will try to understand the product line of the Korean company, which occupies a leading position in the smartphone market.

Diving into the Samsung lineup

To better understand the scale of the problem with the company’s product lines, it’s worth remembering 2020, when Samsung released about 10 : Galaxy S10, S10+, S10e, S10 5G, Note 10, Note 10+, Note 10+ 5G and Galaxy Fold.

Today it is no longer enough to have one flagship device. Smartphone manufacturers are trying to occupy any available niche in the market. And if everything is busy, new niches are created, without regard to their expediency.

If a company already has a mid-budget and flagship device in its lineup, it must definitely add an affordable flagship and a premium mid-budget smartphone. And then release an ultra-flagship, since just a flagship is no longer quite a flagship.

Because of this segmentation, Samsung, like many other manufacturers, is experiencing real chaos in its product lines. In the first 2 months of 2020 alone, Samsung released 5 flagships , not counting their 5G variations (for a total of 7 flagship devices):

  • Galaxy S10 Lite - an affordable flagship
  • Galaxy Note 10 Lite is an affordable flagship with an S-Pen
  • Galaxy S20 is simply a flagship
  • Galaxy S20 Plus - a larger flagship
  • Galaxy S20 Ultra is the flagship among flagships
  • And also their 5G versions

We observe approximately the same situation in the mid-budget segment. But first things first.

Samsung A-series. Available smartphones

A-series is the widest line, including both very cheap models and mid-budget ones with good characteristics. The same line is also the best-selling in the company’s current portfolio. If we take the 10 best-selling smartphones of 2020, three of them are from Samsung and all three are A-series: Galaxy A10 (in third place in the overall ranking), Galaxy A50 (in fourth place) and Galaxy A20 (in seventh place) place).

A-series smartphones are distinguished by budget materials, regardless of price. Even the Galaxy A71, which costs ~$400, is made entirely of plastic, and the screen is covered by budget Gorilla Glass 3, released back in January 2013. At the same time, the entire A-series, with the exception of the initial models, has Super-AMOLED screens, which compares favorably with many other budget and mid-budget smartphones.

Interestingly, Samsung has practically nothing to do with the cheapest A-series devices (for example, Galaxy A10 or A01). These products are developed and manufactured by other Chinese companies and then sold under the Samsung brand.

According to Reuters, Samsung plans to outsource up to 20% of all its smartphones to Chinese manufacturers this year. In this regard, people who overpay for inexpensive A-series devices rather than buy “Chinese junk” look rather naive.

In reality, these smartphones are made by a Chinese “no-name” and are not very different (for the better) from those sold under other Chinese brands. Of course, Samsung claims that quality control at the factories of Chinese contractors is no worse than at its own, but the same Reuters article cites the words of an anonymous source that these contractors save money by reducing stages of the production process, which cannot but affect the quality products.

The slender lineup of the A-series is disrupted by completely incomprehensible models with the letter S. In 2020, almost every A-series model received a double with such a prefix at the end. It would seem that the idea is not new - Apple has long released an iPhone with the prefix S (from English Speed - speed) after the index. These models featured improved performance with the same design.

But, for example, in the Galaxy A30s we see a slightly improved camera compared to the Galaxy A30 and, at the same time, a much worse display with a catastrophically low pixel density - 268 ppi versus 403 ppi for the Galaxy A30. It turns out that the A-series with the letter S at the end are just other smartphones that do not have a clear connection with their predecessors. In some ways they are better, in others worse, which means they should be sold in parallel with previous models. If you want the best screen, get the Galaxy A30, the best camera, the Galaxy A30s.

An unclear situation has arisen with the Galaxy A90. This smartphone from the mid-budget line of 2020 is superior to its own flagships in a number of parameters (5G support, much faster memory). It turns out that the company is losing the point of separating devices by product lines.

But in general, the situation with the A-series is clear - the higher the serial number, the better the characteristics of the smartphone. The Galaxy A50 will be replaced by the Galaxy A51, and then the Galaxy A52 will come. Let's hope that we won't see the S console again this year, or the company will be able to somehow logically explain it.

And one more important point to remember before you decide to buy an A-series smartphone. These devices quickly fall in price and in the secondary market in just six months they will lose up to 50% of their value. The company produces too many models in this series and their prices at the start of sales are always too high. By announcing new models (say, with the S prefix), the price of previous current models begins to decrease. And this happens quite often.

This mysterious Samsung M-series...

This series still remains a mystery not only for ordinary users, but also for many journalists and tech bloggers. What is its meaning and for whom were these smartphones created? How is the M-series different from the A-series?

The letter M in the series name stands for Millennial, which is literally translated from English. means "thousand-year-old". But, of course, this name has nothing to do with numbers. The line was conceived as a product for millennials - people born from 1980 to 2000 and who met the new millennium at a young age.

The main aspiration of the “Greek” generation (a common name for millennials) is to be different from everyone else, to stand out from the crowd. These people show a rebellion against everything popular and a desire to choose not according to modern fashion, but in spite of it.

What should smartphones be like for these people? Maybe with a unique design or bright and unusual colors? Or maybe these should be compact devices with a screen up to 5 inches, which goes against the popular fashion for huge smartphones?

If I were Samsung, this is exactly how I would interpret the concept of a “smartphone for a millennial.” This would justify the appearance of a new (next) line and replenish the lineup with truly unique products. But in fact we have the following:

Samsung Galaxy M20

The picture above shows the Galaxy M20, now compare it with the Galaxy A20:

Can you find at least one difference? Is it possible to somehow explain the positioning of one smartphone for millennials, and the second for everyone else?

Perhaps the difference lies in the characteristics? Indeed, the characteristics differ, but it is impossible to say which of these smartphones is better. They're just different products. In one case, a clearer screen is used, but with an IPS matrix, in the other - AMOLED, but with a low resolution.

As a result, the company came to a simpler positioning. The M-series are budget and mid-budget devices at low prices, which are sold exclusively online. That is, you should not find a single M-series device in retail chains. The M-series replaced the Galaxy ON line (Galaxy ON5, Galaxy ON7 Max, Galaxy ON8 Pro and others), which was practically unknown outside India.

But here, too, one should not look for meaning in product indices. For example, the Galaxy M30s is not an alternative to the Galaxy A30s and does not compete with it. This is a more powerful and expensive smartphone, although it should have been cheaper. Rather, it is an analogue of the Galaxy A50s - both devices are almost identical in characteristics except for the battery and thickness, and they cost about the same.

In fact, Samsung now has two identical series of budget and mid-budget devices. These are the Galaxy A and Galaxy M lines. The only difference between them is that the M series does not have premium mid-budget devices like the Galaxy A71 or Galaxy A90.

Samsung S-series. Trying to regain its former glory

Galaxy S is a flagship line that has always included the best that the company has in its arsenal. The first two devices in this series (Galaxy S and Galaxy S2) were produced in a huge number of variants. The design of the same Galaxy S2 for different markets and even different operators within the same market was noticeably different.

With the release of the Galaxy S3, Samsung changed its approach to flagships and stopped releasing dozens of variations of the same device. This smartphone has become one of the best-selling in the history of the brand. Only the next flagship, the Galaxy S4, which sold around the world with a circulation of 80 million units, could beat its record!

Since then, no other Galaxy S-series smartphone has been able to replicate this success. After sales of the Galaxy S5 dropped by 40% compared to the previous hit, the company completely changed its approach to its flagships. The cases became non-separable; cheap plastic was replaced by aluminum and glass. Flagships began to be produced in different versions: large, small, with a flat screen and with a display curved at the edges.

Did it bring success? No one knows. Samsung has never disclosed sales figures for its flagship Galaxy S6 line. But according to some estimates, sales were about 45 million units, which is lower than the Galaxy S5.

Having corrected all the shortcomings of the Galaxy S6 and maintaining the main design direction, the Galaxy S7 line has approached the Galaxy S3 in sales - more than 55 million units sold!

Experiments continued in subsequent lines (an unclear Bixby button for Russian-speaking users, a fingerprint scanner on the back cover, placed close to the camera lens, etc.).

With the release of the Galaxy S10 line, the company made a big mistake by deliberately worsening the technical characteristics of the compact Galaxy S10e model. Many people like small smartphones, but there are very few true compact flagships on the market and the new product from Samsung is not one.

In the new line, this error was corrected and today the company has an excellent compact flagship - the Galaxy S20. But this time the company did not stop, and along with the compact and large flagship, the flagship of the flagships was released - the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Its main competitor was its own smartphone, the Galaxy Note 10+, with almost the same large screen, but better battery life, a unique S-Pen and a much lower price. For the purposes of this article, we will not touch the Galaxy Note series. This line stands alone as a shining and unique example of superior positioning.

What's the result?

As a result, we see an extremely bloated product line. The company began to produce its smartphones in huge quantities with barely noticeable differences. Looking only at the series, it is impossible to always understand exactly which smartphone is better. An example of this would be the new Galaxy S10 Lite and last year’s Galaxy A90. The latter is practically in no way inferior to the S-series and in some ways even surpasses it.

But it's important to understand that Samsung is just one example of what's happening in the smartphone market right now. The situation is not much different for other companies. In an extremely fierce struggle for market share, expanding the model range is the simplest solution. And many companies follow the path of least resistance (if such a path even exists in the smartphone market).

In the following articles, we will take a closer look at the product lines of other well-known brands: Huawei, OPPO and Xiaomi.

Reasons for the error

Once the washing process has started, water will fill the drum, flushing the washing powder out of the tray. Then, at the end of the wash cycle, the equipment will begin rinsing. To do this, you need to drain the soapy waste water and fill the drum with clean water. If something prevents this, then the Samsung machine displays error 5E.

The impossibility of draining waste water occurs for the following reasons:

  • The drain hose prevents water from passing through. A blockage could form in it, for example, where it connects to the siphon. Or something pressed heavily on the hose, or even bent it.
  • Water does not even enter the drain hose due to a clogged filter.
  • Problem with the water pump.
  • Software failure.

User interface

Samsung D900 uses an updated user interface, which is different from the interface on the same Samsung X820. The main menu consists of a 3 x 3 matrix of icons, but like in many other Samsung models, it can be converted into a vertical text list. Control and navigation is carried out using a navigation key or keyboard that supports the use of shortcuts, that is, when you press a certain key on the keyboard, the corresponding application is launched. Each text menu item is numbered and also supports the use of shortcuts. Actions are performed quickly, the response to pressing a button is almost instantaneous. The menu organization is logical and quite simple. True, in my opinion, it would be much better if the developers equipped the main menu of the phone with 12 sections, as is already done on many modern cell phones, presenting the menu with a 3 x 4 matrix of icons.

Samsung gives users the ability to group frequently used apps into a separate menu called My Menu. Initially, it is activated by pressing the navigation key up. The remaining three directions of the navigation key can be programmed at the user's discretion. As usual, the ?Ok' key activates the phone's Internet browser.

The graphic part is presented in two themes – black and white. Unfortunately, unlike its competitors, Samsung again did not provide the ability to install your own themes; you can change the background image, screen saver, and other settings remain within the framework of only two themes. On the other hand, this problem can be solved by changing the firmware, and with a more widespread distribution of the model, users will receive a wider selection of patches and firmware that allow them to change the graphical interface of the phone. But, nevertheless, the Samsung D900 has one interesting feature that neither the Sony Ericsson K790/800 nor the Nokia N73 can boast of - this is a function called Living World. It allows you to change the settings of the graphic element depending on the region where the user is located. For starters, the phone has 60 sets of wallpapers for the corresponding number of countries where the user may be located. For example, a Samsung D900 user in Russia will see the Kremlin on the screen. Then, the wallpaper was changed depending on the time of day, using Moscow as an example: during the day you see the sun on the screen, and in the evening and at night the Kremlin embankment will appear to you in the light of the evening lanterns. There are also several small, but nice, graphical features of the phone, such as - the network signal level can be determined by the sky in the image - if the signal level is good, then the sky will be clear, if there is a weak signal or no signal, the sky will be overcast. You can change the region settings yourself, for example, by setting the French region, which corresponds to a beautiful view of the Parisian Arc de Triomphe, or use automatic mode. In it, information about your location is taken from your cellular operator.

How to find and fix the problem

What to do if error 5e appears in a Samsung washing machine? First, manually drain the water from the drum. The emergency drain procedure is described in detail in the instructions for the equipment. After this, remove the unrinsed laundry. Now we begin to look for the reason why the problem could appear and take action:

  • The error appears due to a software glitch. To eliminate this, we try to unplug the unit from the outlet for 15 minutes, and then connect it. The glitch should go away.
  • If the filter is clogged, you can remove it and wash it yourself. First, open the small hatch on the machine - most often it is located in the lower right corner of the body. You should first place a rag under the bottom so as not to flood the floor. Having opened the hatch, carefully unscrew the filter itself, rotating it counterclockwise. All that remains to be done is to rinse it and put it back in its original place.
  • A clogged siphon or its connection with the drain hose is easy to check. We disconnect the hose, lower it into an empty bucket or other container and recheck the machine to see if it can drain the water.

To do this, just start the wash, wait until the drum is filled with water and immediately authorize draining. If it works, the reason has been found, we disassemble and clean the siphon.

  • The blockage inside the hose itself is also easy to check yourself. First, we check it for kinks and pinches, then try to disconnect it and manually let water through it. Difficulties arise due to the hose being too long. When such hoses are deliberately lengthened due to a distant drain location, blockages are more common.
  • The contacts on the drain pump may have come loose. Then you need to carefully check if there are any disconnected wires. They move away due to shocks, for example, after transporting the device.

In other cases, a breakdown occurs. It is not recommended to do anything on your own - all that remains is to send the equipment for repair.

DE error on a Samsung washing machine - what it means and how to fix it

History of Samsung shells

Samsung smartphones and cell phones with touch screens have been produced at different times with three proprietary interfaces. The first was TouchWiz, announced in 2008 and first appearing as part of the Samsung Solstice all-in-one in 2009. This interface was also installed on Samsung Android tablets and cameras, and with them on smartphones running Symbian OS, Windows Phone, Bada and Tizen (Samsung's own OS).

Samsung TouchWiz interface

The latest version of TouchWiz received index 6.0 and was released in February 2016. In December 2020, it was replaced by the new Experience UI shell.

Experience UI (left) compared to TouchWiz

The first stable version of Experience UI with index 8.0 was released a month after the announcement, in January 2020. By September 2020 it had grown to version 8.5, and by February 2020 to 9.0. The latest stable release of Experience UI 9.5 was released in August 2020, and in November 2020 the beta of Experience UI 10.0 was released, subsequently renamed One UI.

One UI, Samsung's newest skin for Android

One UI is the most current Samsung shell at the time of publication. At the beginning of 2020, it came out of beta status and was updated to One UI 1.0. Among the first smartphones with the new interface were the flagship Samsung Galaxy S10, which debuted in February 2020. Currently, One UI is available in version 2.0, released in November 2020. Samsung has not yet announced its plans for a possible change to a newer shell.

As CNews wrote, in January 2020, spyware was discovered on all Samsung devices with One UI, which cannot be removed. It can send user data to Chinese servers, and Chinese authorities can access this information at any time. “Spy” developed by the Chinese company Qihoo 360, built into Device Care, a Samsung proprietary utility included in One UI. The application includes functions for optimizing the device, removing temporary and junk files, as well as scanning for viruses and other malware.
