Huawei MediaPad X2

Bonart Leo, 04/29/2018

Advantages: 1. Unique combination of linear dimensions (thin “phone” frames around the “tablet” screen), aspect ratio (very rare for phones 16:10) and screen diagonal (7 inches): the device is truly capable of replacing both a phone and a tablet . 2. Very good design of both the case and the official case, high-quality materials (metal case). 3. Good autonomy - it survives daylight hours with plenty of reserve when using both the tail and the mane. 4. For its price, powerful hardware (octa-core of our own design) and a solid amount of RAM (3 GB, I have never encountered a lack of memory during operation) 5. The functionality of the official case with a window includes auto-locking, time, weather, answering calls, photos. 6. It is possible to upgrade to Android 5.1.1 and 6.0 7. The official Russian version at the beginning of sales had a very attractive price. 8. A small but active and friendly community of owners on 4pda 9. 4G can be enabled on any of the two SIM cards 10. The phone fits comfortably in a jacket pocket. 11. The bracelet (mi band) and wireless headset remove all the inconveniences of using the device for voice calls. 12. All domestic 4G bands are supported - in many places other 4G devices do not receive 4G

Disadvantages: 1. Support for the Russian (European version) is disgusting - not a single update, despite the fact that the original version only has about a dozen major bugs. The problem is solved by flashing the Asian version of the firmware according to the manuals from the website 4pda 2. The “Voice Notifications” program does not work (goes numb) with the Asian firmware 3. To combine two SIM cards and a memory card you need to work fairly and painstakingly with the handles 4. The camera is noticeably lower level compared to competitors in price - unfortunately, the manufacturer left some throwbacks of “tablet” origin 5. No NFC - in Moscow its presence allows you to top up your Troika card, as well as write any subscription to it, simply by tapping it to your phone. Other methods require getting to a cash desk or terminal. 6. The processor is unpopular with game manufacturers, the video accelerator is weak compared to price competitors, and performance in some games may sag. It’s really not critical for me, I don’t play.

Comment: An excellent device that single-handedly forms a unique niche in the class of all-in-one mobile devices. This phone has nothing to do in trouser pockets. I wish the manufacturer further development of the X line (X1, X2) and more attention to Russian customers.

Design

Huawei MediaPad X2 has a very laconic and stylish design. The front side is almost entirely occupied by a 7-inch display. It is worth noting that the frames around the screen are very thin - a little more than a centimeter at the top and bottom, and about 3 millimeters on the sides.

Above the screen there is a 5 MP front camera lens, an earpiece and sensors.

The metal body is assembled perfectly, there are no backlashes, it feels like you can’t bend it so easily, there’s no talk of squeaks. But you quickly get used to it when using Huawei devices.

On the right side of the tablet there are physical keys: the power button and the volume rocker. There is also a microSD slot, which can also be used for a nano-SIM card.

At the bottom end there is a microUSB connector and a microphone, and at the top there is a 3.5mm audio output for a headset.

The body is made of pleasant champagne-colored metal. On top is the main camera lens and external speaker, as well as the logo. Below is the main speaker.

It's worth noting that thanks to its thickness of 7.2 mm and weight of 249 grams, the Huawei MediaPad X2 fits in one hand (if you don't have a tiny palm). Moreover, with proper dexterity, you can perform any actions with the thumb of the same hand in which the phablet lies.

The design of the device is very cool - beautiful colors, textures and materials are worth the money.

Design, dimensions, control elements

Both devices have a common body design style: rectangular shape, visual absence of screen frames, a lot of metal, gold color. In general, the gadgets look nice, and it’s clear that this time no one began to copy Apple’s “used” design.

The dimensions of the X2 (183x104x7.18 mm) make it relatively comfortable to use even with one hand. The phablet fits well in the hand (or hands) due to the fact that the back side is flat and the corners are sloping. Fits easily into the pockets of a warm jacket or the back pockets of jeans. The phablet weighs 250 grams.

M2 is designed similarly. It has 7 grooves along its side edges. Such a number of lines covering the perimeter of the gadget and such a design are not accidental. The M2 is positioned as a musical gadget: 7 grooves indicate the number of horizontal lines of the staff, in addition, as mentioned in the introduction, Harman/Kardon had a hand in the development of two stereo speakers.

This device simply won’t fit in the back pockets of jeans, and there won’t be enough space in the M2 jacket.

Along the perimeter of the front sides there are frames that extend slightly above the body. In both cases it is metal. The X2 has two plastic inserts on the back side at the top and bottom (they even differ in color from the body), while the M2 has an almost entirely metal back side. The manufacturer tells us that the M2's body is made of 99.5% aluminum. Apparently, the thin strip on the back side and the plug for the slots on the right side of the case are still plastic. The tablet weighs 330 grams.

The front panel is protected by glass. It doesn't say which one, but it's not Corning. In any case, after a month of use, not a single scratch appeared on the glass. There is an oleophobic coating, but fingerprints are still noticeable, but they can be erased quickly and easily (usually at this point in reviews you feel like singing “it’s more fun with Mr. Proper - the house is clean twice as fast” :-)). The finger glides over the surface easily.

The assembly of the phablet and tablet does not raise any questions; there is a complete feeling of all-metal “shells”.

The M2 tablet and X2 phablet are available in two colors - silver and gold. However, for the X2, only gold color is available on the official website.

On top of the front of the MediaPad X2 there is a speech speaker, a light and proximity sensor, an indicator of missed events, and a “selfie” camera. At the bottom there is a microUSB and a microphone, at the top there is a second microphone and an audio output, there are no elements on the left, and on the right there is a volume rocker key and a power button, as well as metal trays for microSIM and a combined nanoSIM microSD. On the back of the device there is a camera, a flash and a speaker at the bottom.

On the front panel of the MediaPad M2 there is a small indicator of missed events and a camera. There are two stereo speakers located below and above (the lower one is symmetrically in the center, and the upper one is slightly shifted to the left - perfectionists will not like it). Microphone - at the bottom, microUSB and 3.5 mm - at the top. On the top right there is a volume rocker key and a power button, rising slightly above the side edge.

Huawei MediaPad M2 and MediaPad X2

Display

MediaPad X2 has a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels and a pixel density of 323 ppi.

I would like to note that on a screen with this resolution it is comfortable not only to watch movies, but also to read books.

The screen is made using LTPS (Low Temperature Polysilicon) technology, which reduces power consumption and increases the responsiveness of the display.

The display supports multi-touch up to ten simultaneous touches.

Personally, I felt comfortable working with it: fast responsiveness, good contrast, sufficient brightness level and good pixelation. The anti-reflective coating allows you to read information even on a bright sunny day, however, the brightness is sufficient for this. And the oleophobic coating protects against fingerprints.

Performance

The new MediaPad X2 runs on the Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 930 platform, which consists of a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 clocked at 1.5 GHz and a quad-core Cortex-A53e clocked at 2 GHz.

The former is needed to handle simple tasks, while the latter is designed specifically for heavy-duty games and applications.

The graphics are handled by the ARM Mali-T624 MP4, operating at 600 MHz.

The tablet received 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory, which can also be expanded using a microSD card.

The processor copes well with everyday tasks: the interface responds quickly to any task, there are no freezes, switching between applications occurs quite quickly.

Connection

Huawei MediaPad X2, unlike its predecessor, supports two SIM cards: micro-SIM and nano-SIM formats. Another question is why? It's up to you to decide for yourself.

Working with cards is standard - after installation, you independently set which card will be used for surfing the Internet, and which one for receiving calls and messages.

The tablet supports Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0 and even LTE Cat. 6.

Navigation occurs using GPS and GLONASS satellites.

Battery

Battery capacity of MediaPad X2 is 5000 mAh. This capacity is enough for moderate use of the gadget for two days.

The device is charged via microUSB; a full charge takes about 4 hours.

In the balanced mode of operation in our test at 50% display brightness with Wi-Fi and Chrome always on, the tablet worked for a total of almost 20 hours. Excellent result.

If, for some reason, you don’t have enough capacity, you can turn to one of the additional power consumption modes: energy-saving or smart.

Energy saving actually turns the tablet into a smartphone - since its functionality is limited to voice calls and messages.

Smart mode offers the user to optimize energy consumption.

Battery and operating time

The tablet's battery capacity is the same as on its predecessor - 5000 mAh. Logically, given the significantly increased power, the autonomy of the device should have suffered a little. This is true, but the deterioration is completely invisible. The tablet lasts about the same as the previous generation model. In particular, in reading mode the tablet will last from 8 to 21 hours, when watching videos - from 7 to 15 hours, but the game will drain the device in 3.5-5 hours. The results are not record-breaking, but very good, and depend on how the tablet is used. You can easily count on a whole day of work. There is also the ability to charge other devices via microUSB.

operating system

Huawei MediaPad X2 runs Android 5.0 and the proprietary EMUI 3.0.5 shell.

In addition to convenient power settings, you will find all the features familiar from previous versions of EMUI. EMUI, in my opinion, is one of the few proprietary shells that don’t make you think of vanilla Android.

Advantages and disadvantages

Concluding the review, we traditionally note the strengths and weaknesses of the Huawei MediaPad X2.

Pros:

  • Two SIM cards, both support data transfer.
  • High quality case.
  • Excellent performance.
  • Improved front camera.

Minuses:

  • Fast discharge at high loads.
  • Incomplete compatibility with some games.

Camera

The 13 MP main camera has autofocus and LED flash. The pictures it takes are also good, which is expected from such a resolution. The colors turn out bright, and most importantly, the color rendition itself works perfectly, without giving the frames tints. I would like to note the excellent quality of the image at maximum magnification.

MediaPad X2 has a 5 MP front camera without autofocus, which gives an excellent picture for chats.
