Design and ergonomics
Huawei MatePad 10.4 has a metal back and a plastic side frame. The corners and edges of the case are rounded for convenience. The margins around the screen are small, making the device very compact. At the same time, they are wide enough to make holding the tablet comfortable. The weight of 450 g does not strain your hands during prolonged use.
Photo: Artyom Bagdasarov / Lifehacker
The build quality and materials are excellent: the gaps between the glass, plastic frame and aluminum are minimal and invisible to the touch. There are no logos on the front side, the only element on it besides the screen is the front camera.
At the ends there are four speakers, a power button and USB Type-C. There is no headphone jack provided. Also, the new product does not have a fingerprint scanner - unlocking is carried out by face. But the model is not deprived of microphones: there are four of them. The logo and camera with flash were placed on the back side.
Photo: Artyom Bagdasarov / Lifehacker
The tablet received a hybrid slot for SIM cards and microSD. There is also a version without an LTE modem.
Screen
The new product is equipped with a 10.4-inch display made using IPS technology. The matrix resolution is 2,000 × 1,200 pixels, which provides a pixel density of 224 ppi - a completely acceptable result by tablet standards. The picture is clear, the small font is easy to read.
Photo: Artyom Bagdasarov / Lifehacker
The contrast level is sufficient so that the black color does not look faded. When viewed from an angle, the image fades a little, but this does not interfere with the use of the device.
Color reproduction is calm, and some users will not like this. Unfortunately, there is no choice of ready-made color profiles in the settings, but you can adjust the picture using an RGB circle.
The brightness reserve for IPS is excellent, readability in the sun does not drop much. There is also a “Natural Tone” mode that adapts color rendering to lighting conditions, and a blue filter that reduces eye strain.
Software and performance
Huawei MatePad 10.4 runs Android 10 with the proprietary EMUI shell. The latter is well known from the company's smartphones and differs only in its support for landscape orientation. There are no Google services here either.
The hardware platform of the new product is the HiSilicon Kirin 810 chipset with big.LITTLE architecture: two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores operate at a frequency of up to 2.27 GHz, and six energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores operate at up to 1.88 GHz.
The Mali-G52 MP6 video accelerator is responsible for the graphics; the SoC also includes a coprocessor for working with Huawei DaVinci neural networks. There is 4 GB of RAM, and the internal storage capacity is 64 GB and is expandable via microSD memory cards.
In World of Tanks: Blitz, at medium settings, the tablet produces a stable 60 FPS. It is noteworthy that the new product outperforms the more expensive Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, which is equipped with a less powerful Mali-G72 MP3 video accelerator.
The system also works flawlessly, although the lack of Google services causes inconvenience in places. For example, there is no separate YouTube client; you have to access the video hosting site through a browser.
The AppGallery store still doesn't have many of the usual apps, such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. Luckily, you can install them through your browser by downloading an APK file.

Advantages and problems of Huawei Matebook

Video review of Huawei Matebook
Sound
Huawei MatePad 10.4 is equipped with four speakers that operate in stereo mode. The sound is simply excellent: the vocal range is well developed, the volume reserve is high, while there is no distortion at maximum values, there is even good bass.
Photo: Artyom Bagdasarov / Lifehacker
To connect headphones you will have to use an adapter or Bluetooth. In both cases, the sound quality depends on the audio codec in the dongle or directly in the headphones. The tablet itself supports Bluetooth 5.1 and connects well with any devices.
Camera
The new product received an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus. There is no need to talk about quality: the frames are dim, the detail is low. A similar result can be obtained with a cheap smartphone under 10 thousand rubles.
Photo: Artyom Bagdasarov / Lifehacker
But the 8 MP front camera is great for video calling, and it also takes satisfactory selfies.

- Main module: 8 MP, f/2.0, autofocus, flash
- Front camera: 8 MP, f/2.2, without autofocus and flash
There is only one main camera, but we are dealing with a tablet, especially not the most expensive one , so the most important thing is that the device allows you to photograph documents and various inscriptions, with which there are no problems, thanks to the presence of autofocus. If there is enough lighting, then you can get relatively beautiful pictures in nature, as you can see by looking at the examples below. In poor lighting, a flash can save the situation.

Video recording on both the main and front cameras can occur in HD or FullHD resolution, and exclusively at 30 FPS . I was pleased that automatic focusing works, meaning that in most cases the user no longer needs to press the screen while shooting.
The front camera, in my opinion, is needed exclusively for video communication, judging by the quality of the photos. However, there are modes for beautifying the face and there is a flash, the role of which is played by the screen.

Autonomy
Inside the tablet there is a battery with a capacity of 7,250 mAh. According to the manufacturer, this is enough for 12 hours of video playback. During testing, the new product withstood a day and a half of active use with games, music and YouTube - a decent result.
Photo: Artyom Bagdasarov / Lifehacker
The kit comes with a 10W adapter, which is a little disappointing: I would like to see fast charging. It takes 3.5 hours to fully recharge the battery.
Results
The basic Huawei MatePad 10.4 will cost 22 thousand rubles, and the version with LTE support will cost 2 thousand more. Of course, the new product has a lot of compromises: the body materials are inexpensive, the screen could be richer, the main camera was installed for show, and the charging adapter is not powerful enough to quickly replenish the capacious battery. The lack of Google services cannot be ignored, although the company is trying to make life easier for users.
Despite a number of problems, the model deserves attention: it boasts gaming performance, excellent speakers and long battery life. Considering the price, the offer is more than fair.
Buy
The author thanks Huawei for providing the device for testing. The company had no opportunity to influence its outcome.
