Review of DEXP Ixion X 5: new product in the long-lived family of Android smartphones

With the development of modern communication standards, smartphones with a built-in LTE module are in increasing demand. Flagship models and devices in the mid-price segment have long received this function. But budget devices began to be equipped with a similar function relatively recently. One of the representatives of the affordable category of devices is the Dexp Ixion M LTE 5. Young companies, trying to occupy their niche in the market, are trying to make their devices as attractive as possible. At the same time, the flagship “filling” is often combined with a low price.

Smartphone Dexp Ixion M LTE 5: characteristics

Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 is packaged in a compact black box with blue accents. On different sides there is an image of the device itself, as well as the main technical characteristics. When you open the box, in addition to the smartphone itself, you will find:

  • network adapter;
  • micro-USB adapter;
  • user manual and other paper documentation.

Packaging and equipment

The DEXP Ixion ML 4.5'' smartphone is sold in a small cardboard box, decorated in branded black and blue colors. On the cover is the model name and the smartphone itself, and on the bottom side of the package are the main technical characteristics of the device.

The package includes a wall charger (5 V, 1 A), a micro-USB cable, a printed quick start guide and a warranty card. There is no headset or any additional accessories included, which is explained by the budget model. In general, the equipment is quite ordinary and sufficient for full operation of the smartphone.

Appearance of the smartphone

The design of the Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 is quite strict and does not have any outstanding characteristics. The case itself is made of plastic, and the front panel is covered with protective glass. Models available in black, blue and white. It is worth noting that the shade changes only on the back cover, while the front panel always remains black. Thus, it is the dark color of the case that is most advantageous. Looking at the front panel of the device, you will notice fairly narrow frames around the screen, which is undoubtedly a positive characteristic. Recently, there has been a tendency for the display to match the width of the front surface. But budget devices, unfortunately, bypass this trend. Above the display there is a front camera eye, light and proximity sensors, as well as a speaker. At the bottom there are three Android control buttons. A nice feature is that they are equipped with backlighting, which simplifies use in the dark and makes the appearance of the device more interesting. The design of the side edges includes a small recess in the middle. On the right is the lock key, and on the left is the volume button. The bottom edge contains a minimum of elements. There is only a conversational microphone and a small groove that serves to remove the back cover. At the top you can see a headphone jack and a micro-USB connector. The back panel is very laconic. In the upper left corner there is a peephole for the main camera and an LED flash. At the very bottom is the External Speaker Grille, as well as the brand logo.

Appearance and design

The design of the DEXP Ixion ML 4.5'' is quite trivial: the front panel is completely covered with glass, touch buttons, smooth corners.
The only unusual thing is the thickness: as much as 12.5 mm. But it is precisely because of this that the smartphone was able to accommodate a large battery with a capacity of 4,000 mAh. The weight of the handset is not a very impressive 149 g, so even despite the reinforced battery, this device cannot be called particularly heavy. The body is completely made of plastic. On the front panel, under protective glass, there is a 4.5-inch display made using IPS technology. The latter provides increased brightness and more natural color reproduction than the cheap TN matrices common in budget smartphones. It’s great that DEXP used IPS, and not the cheap and wretched TN.

The screen resolution of the DEXP Ixion ML 4.5'' is modest - 540 x 960 pixels. However, due to the relatively small diagonal, the picture does not look grainy (pixel density is 240 ppi), moreover, the resources of the processor and graphics accelerator are spent not on drawing “extra” display pixels, but on performing more important computing tasks. The viewing angles are quite wide, and when viewed from an acute angle, the image does not turn blue or yellow, which is not uncommon for inexpensive matrices.

Below the display there are three standard backlit touch buttons: “Menu”, “Home” and “Back”. Above the screen there is a speaker mesh, a front 0.3-megapixel camera lens, proximity and light sensors, and a two-color LED indicator. While the battery is charging, it glows blue, and when it is finished, it glows green. In addition, it can flash blue to remind you of missed events.

The removable back cover of the DEXP Ixion ML 4.5'' has a fairly large ribbed notch, thanks to which the smartphone fits securely in the hand. In the center of the upper part of the rear panel is the lens of the main 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, and to the left of it is an LED flash.

The lower part of the rear panel is occupied by the DEXP logo and two slots for the calling speaker, and a special protrusion is made here so that the sounds of the call are not muffled, even if the device is lying on the table with the screen facing up.

Hardware volume buttons are installed on the left side of the DEXP Ixion ML 4.5'', the power button is on the right.

But the micro-USB port “climbed” onto the top panel of the smartphone, next to the 3.5 mm mini-jack for connecting a headset or headphones. A very unusual location - usually the USB port is placed either at the bottom or on the side. At the bottom end you can find a microphone hole and a slot for easy removal of the back cover.

Under the back cover of the Ixion ML 4.5'' there are two slots for SIM cards (micro-SIM + mini-SIM) and a slot for MicroSD flash cards. Plus, of course, the pride of this device is its removable 4,000 mAh battery. Like most inexpensive dual-SIM smartphones, there is one radio module, so only one SIM card is active during a call, and both are active in standby mode. By the way, about the lid: it does not wobble and does not particularly creak when compressed. So the build quality of the smartphone can be rated at five, perhaps with a small, small minus.

Ergonomics

For build quality, the Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 deserves an “Excellent” rating. During operation, no backlash or squeaks were noticed. And even with strong compression, the plastic does not bend. Special attention should be paid to the quality of materials. The soft-touch matte plastic, which is very pleasant to the touch, does not leave fingerprints. And the front panel is covered with glass with an oleophobic coating, which also eliminates the formation of unsightly hand marks. The arrangement of mechanical and touch buttons is classic for devices running Android. If this is not your first smartphone, you won’t have to get used to it, because control will occur at the level of intuition and muscle memory. Although the buttons have a smooth movement, they are quite elastic, which minimizes the likelihood of accidental pressing. It is worth separately noting the location of the elements under the back cover. Thus, the battery for Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 is located much lower than the slots for SIM cards and additional memory. Thus, to insert a flash drive or change a SIM card, you do not have to take out the battery, which is typical for many other smartphones.

Display

The Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 is equipped with a five-inch IPS screen. The touchscreen recognizes up to 5 simultaneous touches. This feature will mainly be useful to those who are interested in games. Of course, the display of this device is far behind the flagship models, but in its price category it looks quite decent. A clear and contrasting image is provided to the user by the Dexp Ixion M LTE 5. The screen produces a clear picture with good contrast. Bright and rich colors immediately catch your eye. As for pixelation, it can only be seen with a very close study of the display. As for the viewing angles, they are quite good, and viewing distortion will be minimal. The operation of the sensor does not cause any complaints. The screen responds instantly to touches. A nice feature is the presence of a light sensor. Considering its precise operation, you can safely set the automatic brightness adjustment mode. But in bright light the screen goes blind. To view a picture or text, you have to turn the backlight to “maximum,” which leads to rapid battery drain.

Interface

The Android 4 KitKat operating system is installed on the Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 smartphone. Android 5 is updated over the air. The pre-installed software is perfectly adapted to the amount of RAM of this device. DEXP is a Russian company that cooperates with many domestic software developers. Thus, the list of preinstalled applications is determined by this factor. Thus, special attention should be paid to the 2GIS navigation program, the Internet browser from Yandex, the liters online book store, the Dr. antivirus. Web and the VKontakte application. A nice feature is the ability to remove unnecessary programs without obtaining root rights.

Introduction

The company DEXP (Digital EXPerience) is well known to regular readers of our laboratory.
Previously, we have already reviewed several models of mobile solutions released under this brand, but now the next step is a representative of the budget class - DEXP Ixion ES 4. The manufacturer positions it as follows: “An inexpensive and compact smartphone with support for third generation networks (3G). The device is perfect for people who value minimalism and a pleasant Soft Touch coating.”

Interestingly, in the image below, you can see Android very similar to version 4.4 - this is evidenced by the updated design of the Menu button and battery charge icon, however, the device is running version 4.2.

In terms of characteristics, the device is nothing interesting. We have before us an average smartphone in the price category “up to 3,000 rubles”. We have already seen a similar device in the past – Explay Hit. That time we were disappointed by the meager amount of RAM, TN matrix and lack of 3G. In contrast, the DEXP Ixion ES 4 promises to correct these competitor shortcomings.

Packaging and equipment

Here we have a classic design, designed very well for the budget segment.

The reverse side highlights the key features of the product and provides a nice image of the phone from all angles. But the ends are not very informative.

In order to recognize that the box has been opened, security seals are provided.

Inside, the smartphone lies in a soft “crib”. Not bad for an ultra-budget class! Remember the packaging of the Lenovo A859.

Russian and Chinese companies are very fond of providing their protective film with advertising information, and DEXP Ixion ES 4 is no exception.

The following accessories await us inside:

  • Charger;
  • MicroUSB cable;
  • Documentation and warranty card.

Alas, there is no stereo headset, but that's okay. All the same, the vast majority of users prefer to immediately change it to better quality headphones.

The charger is a fairly common model, there are no complaints about it. It is not equipped with an LED.

Appearance and design

In terms of its design, the DEXP Ixion ES 4 does not stand out in anything interesting; it is a typical smartphone with a touch screen.

The case material is unpainted plastic, the surface is matte. In this case, the usual one, and in black – Soft Touch (the white version would quickly get dirty with this approach). However, fingerprints on such a surface are not visible, nor are minor damages.

The only ringing speaker is located at the rear and, alas, is not equipped with any protection against muting.

It’s nice that the back cover “embraces” the inside of the device completely; there is no usual seam in the case. The design solution is very similar to that used on some Nokia smartphone models. That's right: fewer seams mean fewer crunches and squeaks. And the rigidity of such a back cover will be higher.

But the frames around the display could be smaller. It's sad, but backlighting of the touch navigation keys is not provided.

At the top you can only find an AUX socket, and at the bottom only a microphone. There is no hardware noise reduction system here.

All buttons are on the right, and on the left side there is a MicroUSB connector. It's unusual, but it doesn't cause any significant problems.

Only the front camera is located near the speaker grille. There are no LED indicators or light sensor. In this regard, Explay Hit looks more advantageous.

The rear camera module is very simple. The lenses are identical to those used in the front cameras of mid-price smartphones. Therefore, one should not expect serious results from such a decision.

The module itself protrudes quite a bit beyond the body.

The volume button does not look very aesthetically pleasing, but due to its obvious relief it is very convenient to use. The keys are inserted tightly into the case; there is no doubt about their reliability, given that they are attached to a removable cover, which can always be replaced.

The unusual location of the charging connector does not cause any particular difficulties, but for the first day or two you involuntarily try to find it from below.

Among the shortcomings of the design, we can highlight the not quite even gaps...

... and the seams on the back cover in the corners, which are tactile. However, for such a modest smartphone this is unimportant.

There is nothing surprising under the cover; we have encountered a similar design more than once.

The smartphone works with two SIM cards of 25×15 format and a MicroSD memory card (officially up to 32 GB).

In general, the build quality is good, no extraneous squeaks or crunches were noticed. The design of the back cover is successful; there should be no problems with keys falling out or the case coming apart.

Performance

The good performance of the Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 smartphone is ensured by the Adreno 306 processor. It is worth noting that the Snapdragon 410 chipset from Qualcomm is the first in this line that supports 64-bit computing. But there are some inconsistencies. Such calculations are not supported by the pre-installed Android 4.4.4 KitKat system, which is minor, but still affects performance. For a modern smartphone, 1 GB of RAM is not a very solid indicator. Although in order to ensure uninterrupted and smooth operation of Android KitKat, this is quite enough. As for the internal memory, it is only 8 GB. About half is occupied by the operating system and pre-installed applications. And if you want to install a microSD card, its volume should not exceed 32 GB, which is catastrophically small for a modern active user. In principle, the performance of the Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 is enough not only for familiar tasks, but also for games. Still, a good chipset and a high-quality processor somewhat compensate for the small amount of RAM. Thus, “heavy” games work great, even if about a dozen applications are running in the background. The same applies to video. Even in 720p resolution, online videos are reproduced well, and the sound does not lag behind the picture.

Cameras

The Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 phone is equipped with two cameras. Main – 8 MP, front – 2 MP. It is especially worth noting the presence of autofocus, which works quickly and makes it possible to take clear pictures. In low light conditions, you can use the LED flash (main camera only). The camera application comes on alert approximately 1 second after clicking on the shortcut. The same time is spent on creating a photo. Considering the small number of settings, the application interface can be considered simple and understandable. Presented to you are buttons that perform the functions of geotagging, shutter release and mode selection. There are only three of the latter available: “Panorama”, “Photo” and “Video”. By making a short swipe in any area of the screen, you can call up the additional settings menu. Here you can enable HDR mode and switch from the main camera to the front one. You can also mute the shutter sound, select a scene mode, enable face detection, adjust white balance, apply color effects, and so on. In good daylight, the camera takes bright and clear pictures. Even moving objects do not appear blurry. With the onset of twilight, you can also get good shots, provided that there are bright sources of artificial lighting. But the flash leaves much to be desired. It is only suitable for photographing close-up objects.

Autonomy

The battery for Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 has a capacity of 2300 mAh. Considering the screen size and the overall configuration of the smartphone, this figure can be considered quite decent. So, if you use the phone in moderate mode, it can work for two days. So, during the experiment, a fully charged smartphone was used for calls, taking photos (about 50), watching videos (about an hour), surfing the Internet, 39-45% of the charge was consumed in 12 hours. An hour of watching videos at maximum brightness takes 21%. An hour of online play consumes up to 30%. It will take 3-4 hours to fully charge the battery.

Analogs

For any device, you can choose an analogue that is similar in price and characteristics.

Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 does not have any outstanding characteristics, and therefore you can find a lot of similar devices from other manufacturers. It is worth paying special attention to the following gadgets:

  • ASUS Zenfone 5 LTE will cost you 2,000 rubles more, but you will get a device from a well-known brand. Nevertheless, in terms of thickness and weight, this device is somewhat inferior to the model under consideration. And perhaps the main difference is that this smartphone supports only one SIM card.
  • Lenovo K3 Music Lemon is another representative of this segment, which can be a worthy analogue of the Dexp Ixion M LTE 5. Reviews of this smartphone, which is manifested in good sound quality and wide options for settings. Another advantage is the large amount of built-in memory.
  • Lenovo A806 is another good “Chinese”, which is similar in characteristics to the model in question. By paying an additional 2,000 rubles, you get a powerful processor and 2 GB of RAM. The battery is also more capacious than in the model under review. However, if we talk about the low price, this will only be true for the “gray” version. But a device with an official guarantee will cost you an order of magnitude more.
  • Elephone P3000S is a poorly known and not the most common device on the domestic market. Its main advantages are a large amount of memory, a capacious battery, and an excellent processor backed up by good RAM. An additional advantage will be the presence of a fingerprint scanner. Among the shortcomings, it is worth highlighting the clumsy design and the large mass of the device.
  • Elephone P3000 is a simplified version of the previous device. However, if you compare the difference in characteristics and the price range, it is worth saying that the savings will be unjustified.

Who is the manufacturer?

DEXP are automatic washing machines that can only be purchased on the DNS network. Including in the company’s online store. The first products of the DEXP brand appeared on the Russian market in 2013. The country of origin is China.

DNS (DNS) is a company that owns a retail network for the sale of equipment - computer, digital and household. More than half a thousand cities in the Russian Federation are entangled in a “web” of 1,400 stores. The headquarters of the network is based in Vladivostok.

Consumers are actively discussing the appearance of cheap washing machines from DNS. Some service masters even joke about this topic, for example: “The more they sell, the more work.” Buyers are confused by the cheapness of washing machines, but it is logical to assume that the cost reduction is achieved not due to poor quality - although this is not excluded, but by removing unnecessary links in the “manufacturer-consumer” chain.

Positive reviews

There are many reviews of various smartphone models online. This also applies to Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 black. However, only users who have managed to try the device in practice can give an objective assessment. So, it is worth highlighting the following positive aspects mentioned in the reviews:

  • excellent screen with rich colors, decent viewing angles and good contrast levels;
  • a good main camera that takes clear pictures not only in good lighting, but also in twilight and at night;
  • long battery life (up to 2-2.5 days at moderate load);
  • LTE network support;
  • affordable price compared to similar devices from more well-known brands;
  • The phone fits comfortably in the hand and is quite light;
  • There are no fingerprints left on either the plastic or the protective glass during operation.

Introduction

Most recently, we got acquainted with a whole series of long-lived smartphones under the domestic DEXP brand.
The Ixion ML 4.7 and Ixion ML 5, as well as the Ixion XL 5 models left a very good impression on the authors. Taking the brand's new device for testing, we were surprised to learn that the Ixion X 5 can also very well lay claim to the title of long-liver. Although formally it is not included in the corresponding family.

To confirm this, and just so as not to delay too long, we will immediately present the technical characteristics of the new model.

Well, it’s very good: the characteristics are at the level of last year’s flagships ( already the year before last – editor’s note.

): a five-inch Full HD display, a powerful MTK platform with 2 GB of RAM, as well as a standard “Russian-Chinese” set of two SIM slots and a memory card slot - how many times have we already seen this. And a common companion to all this is extremely low battery life. But not in this case!

Indeed, instead of the usual battery with a capacity of 2,000–2,500 mAh, in the case of the DEXP Ixion X 5 we get a battery of as much as 4,000 mAh. And the price... well, the price corresponds to the realities of the market. We will see all new models at completely different prices. After all, the current 15 thousand is less than $250 - quite an average segment.

Packaging and equipment DEXP Ixion X 5

The DEXP smartphone comes in a cardboard box of average size and form factor for a modern device - with a removable lid.

On its back the main features of the Ixion X 5 are listed - we already know them from the performance characteristics table.

Inside, the device, again as usual, rests in a separate tray and is covered with packaging film. It duplicates the main features of the model, but the most important one – battery capacity – is highlighted. The same should have been done on the packaging.

The kit is meager – they didn’t even include a wired headset. Just brief documentation, a microUSB cable and a charger block. And even then they were greedy with the latter, putting a one-amp “charger” in the kit.

The accessories are designed completely standard.

Appearance and design of DEXP Ixion X 5

And the DEXP Ixion X 5 itself looks more than usual: a standard form factor with a large touch screen and touch buttons underneath it, rounded corners, a plastic case.

Under the packaging film you can find another one - a protective film on the display.

The dimensions are a little larger than we would like to see with a five-inch display diagonal. And the width, due to the rather large almost five-millimeter frames, is too large - 72 mm. And the thickness of 13 mm seems big these days.

However, thanks to the rounded shape and pleasant plastic back cover with soft-touch coating, the smartphone is comfortable to hold and does not tend to slip out of your hand.

And everything should be fine with wear resistance: after two weeks of testing, the coating on both the solid back cover and the plastic side frame did not wear out at all, did not begin to peel off, and no noticeable scratches or chips appeared anywhere; although our type of use cannot be called gentle.

Negative reviews

Unfortunately, budget devices have a number of disadvantages. The Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 smartphone is no exception. Among the negative reviews, it is worth noting the following:

  • outdated version of the operating system;
  • when operating in LTE mode, the battery drains quickly;
  • after a while it starts to freeze when working with “heavy” games and programs;
  • at maximum load the device gets very hot, which often leads to an independent reboot;
  • The case materials are not the most expensive, and therefore the smartphone quickly loses its “marketable” appearance if you carry it without a case;
  • it is difficult to find accessories for this device;
  • inconvenient camera interface (the advanced settings menu is hidden and not organized entirely logically);
  • No headphones included;
  • the AC adapter and the phone itself get very hot during charging;
  • the smartphone does not “see” the headphones (for this to happen, you need to restart the smartphone after connecting them);
  • in all color schemes the front panel remains black, which does not look very attractive;
  • An initially good battery runs out very quickly, and over time it begins to last only for a few hours under moderate load.

General impression

The Dexp Ixion M LTE 5 phone is perfect for those looking for a budget device with a good set of features. This smartphone provides comfortable use of basic functions, as well as excellent quality of Internet surfing. Despite the small amount of RAM, the smartphone can easily handle even heavy programs and games.

A bright screen and a powerful processor will give you real pleasure from using the device. By the way, the display can be called one of the strongest points of this device. The color quality and viewing angles can compete even with models in even higher price categories. Also, not every smartphone can boast of a high-quality oleophobic coating that will protect the front panel from unsightly fingerprints.

The main camera takes surprisingly good pictures. The photos come out no worse than on point-and-shoot cameras. However, many users found the camera settings menu inconvenient. In addition, the number of shooting modes is limited to only three.

An additional advantage can be considered a stylish case with an elegant, laconic design, where, although there was no place for original solutions, it was not possible to identify any shortcomings. And perhaps the best thing is the price. It costs about 8,000 rubles, which is quite inexpensive for a device with such a decent “stuffing”.

However, if you need a reliable device for the long term, this model is unlikely to suit you. Based on the reviews, we can conclude that after just a few months, serious interruptions in the operation of the smartphone begin. The battery also suffers.
