Vernee X first review: four cameras, 6200 mAh battery and Face ID

Why are you interested?

A relatively inexpensive smartphone (you can buy Vernee X with 4+64 GB for only 11,500 rubles), made in a full-screen design. Large, high-resolution display with reasonable bezels around it. It is interesting because of its capacious battery, which, despite the impressive size of the display, is ready to provide good autonomy.

Design

The smartphone feels very nice in the hand. In my opinion, much nicer than Ulefone Power 3 (we will make parallel comparisons with this model, since it is the most comparable to the hero of our review) and many other nearby analogues, despite the fact that both of them are made of metal. The Ulefone Power 3 has a much smoother metallic finish, while the Vernee X has a very nice matte finish that I actually like better. Vernee X is exactly the same size as Ulefone Power 3. They seemed to be assembled according to the same drawing - the difference in dimensions is tenths of a millimeter. But the Vernee has rounded edges, which makes it appear thinner than it actually is.

Let's pay attention to the front of the smartphone. The top and bottom frames are very narrow. There's clearly not enough space at the bottom for a fingerprint scanner or even capacitive buttons, and the top bezel is wide enough for cameras, microphones, and more. Although the side bezels are larger than you might think. If you measure the distance of the glass from the metal edges, it turns out that it is not the smallest. But it’s still worth recognizing that these are very thin frames for such a large device with such a capacious battery.

One minus is that the smartphone does not have a headphone jack. You'll have to use the included headphones or a USB-C adapter unless you upgrade to Bluetooth, which thankfully works fine. There is no need to mention the remaining elements of the case - everything is classic. Like other low-end smartphones that want to look more expensive, Vernee X has a dual front camera, a flash, and, of course, USB Type-C as the main physical connector.

Overall, the Vernee X has excellent build quality, but it's a little large for one-handed use - still 6 inches and a generously sized battery. The smartphone looks quite nice; the manufacturer did not introduce any unusual features into the design, but used the most acceptable ones. The matte metal is complemented by thin plastic inserts for the antennas, which are not conspicuous; the front is covered with glass - everything is familiar and sound.

Design. Ergonomics. Screen.

The smartphone offers a modern display with an aspect ratio of 18:9, which occupies 83.8% of the front area. The buttons are on-screen and can be hidden. Called by the usual swipe from the bottom of the screen. Now we can state the fact that individual physical navigation buttons are gradually disappearing from smartphones and this is only beneficial for the physical dimensions of the device. Due to the elongated screen and reduced frames, the physical dimensions of the 6-inch Vernee X are at the level of conventional 5.5-inch smartphones. But the screen is significantly larger.

It fits very nicely in the hand, without leaving a shoveling feeling. Of course, it would be possible to reduce its size further, because the upper and lower frames here cannot be called small, but in the upper part there is no ugly unibrow, which only the lazy did not copy. You can notice pleasant curves at the corners of the screen - this effect makes the screen unusual and looks interesting.

The screen here is really cool - the detail is excellent, as is the color rendition. Visibility both indoors and outdoors is good; in direct sunlight, the brightness should be turned up to maximum.

The viewing angles are also good; we have classic IPS with all its advantages. There are no color distortions at an angle, there are no highlights on a black background, and with a white fill you can see the uniformity of the illumination. The type of glass used is not specified, which means you shouldn’t use a smartphone without a film. The factory film will only work for the first time - it is glued evenly, but the oleophobic coating is absent as a class, as a result of which stains from grease stains appear quickly and are not easily erased. It’s better, of course, to use protective glass, fortunately there are enough of them.

At the top, to the left of the speaker, there is a 3-color LED event indicator. When a notification is missed, it flashes blue, and green and red colors are used solely to display the status of the charging process. Here you can also see a low-power LED that can be used to illuminate the face during selfies. To the right of the speaker you can see 2 front cameras, but even a layman can see that one of the sensors is much smaller. In general, the issue of using second modules in this smartphone is quite controversial. In my opinion, they were installed just for show and they do not perform any useful function; all blurring in portrait mode is performed by software.

The lock and volume control buttons are located on the right side at the top. They didn’t reinvent the wheel here; this arrangement is the most convenient and familiar.

The tray was placed on the left side. You can use 2 nano SIM cards or 1 SIM card and a memory card. Taking into account the fact that even the younger version uses a drive with a built-in memory capacity of 64Gb, the option with two SIMs looks more preferable. I can’t even imagine how, during the global Internet, you can fill 64GB of memory in a smartphone, but even if you need to carry your entire audio collection with you (what if today you want to listen to Boni M, which you haven’t turned on for 10 years), a complete collection of family photos, yes there are more movies - that is, the top version with 128 GB of internal memory. But it also costs significantly more.

The back of the smartphone has its own personality and does not try to copy anyone. At least it doesn’t look like a Samsung or iPhone. The body is made of matte metal-like plastic. It is impossible to visually understand that the case is plastic; there is even an imitation of inserts for antennas. And you can’t immediately tell it by touch, except that it’s less slippery than its aluminum counterpart. In general, I don’t know whether this is a plus or a minus - to each his own, but it is very pleasant to use - all the edges are smoothly rounded, it fits well in the palm.

At the top center there is a dual camera. Pay attention to the miniature sensor of the additional camera, I really doubt that there are 5 megapixels, more like 0.3. Well, the idea is clear, now dual cameras are in trend and the Chinese, in order to keep up, have to sculpt anything. To the left is a flash consisting of two LEDs. The brightness is average, you can take a photo of an advertisement from a pole in the dark or someone’s business card with a phone number. A fingerprint scanner is located under the camera; it works well and is error-free.

USB Type C is located in the center of the bottom edge, and audio speakers are on the sides. More precisely, one audio speaker and a snag for symmetry in the design.

The sound of the speaker is clear, without wheezing at maximum volume, but in my opinion it is somewhat quiet. Since we have a processor from MTK in front of us, we can change the sound parameters through the engineering menu in no time. We dial the code *#*#3646633#*#*, go to the audio settings and set the speaker volume to 160. It gets much better. The sound quality is certainly not top-notch, but let’s say it’s at the level of other Chinese phones in this league. For ringtones, YouTube and toys - more than suitable.

And here's what Vernee X looks like in the included case. In my opinion, it’s quite harsh and masculine, but the main thing is that it perfectly protects the body from damage when falling.

Display

The 6-inch display of Vernee X has a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels and an inherent aspect ratio of 18:9. Get used to it, this year classic smartphones with 16:9 screens will rapidly disappear. The screen is quite good. Text and news articles look super crisp, and colors are deep and rich, too. Seeing the photos on Vernee X is amazing. The Vernee's screen is a little warmer than the Ulefone Power 3. I personally prefer cooler screens, but the display still looks great. The maximum brightness is 400-450 nits, which is quite adequate, but not in bright sunlight. You won't be able to see what's on the screen if the sun is too bright. The only downside is the lack of Gorilla Glass. There is no mention of safety glass at all.

In general, smartphones comparable in price to the Vernee X, which we reviewed today, may well boast displays (we don’t take into account representatives of well-known brands - their pricing policy is different). Models that have downright bad displays are rare today. And Vernee’s smartphones, in general, among representatives of the budget class have almost the best screens.

As for framelessness, the area occupied by the display is almost 77%. Not a record, but normal “frameless” for this money.

Vernee X - review of a smartphone with a 6200mAh battery

Chinese manufacturers today have a difficult task - to occupy at least some free niche. And, in my opinion, the layer of protected, ultra-low-cost and, of course, smartphones with a large battery remained relatively open. Today we will talk about the latter. Meet Vernee X - a high-quality device that follows all modern trends and, in addition, has an onboard battery of as much as 6200mAh.

Video version of the review

Unpacking and packaging

The smartphone comes in a thick square box made of a fabric-like material that is pleasant to the touch. At the top there is a strip with the letter X or the Roman numeral 10, and at the bottom there is a classic sticker with IMEI and characteristics.

The set, by today's standards, is rich. Inside the box we find: a USB Type C cable, fast charging, instructions, a warranty card, a clip for the SIM card tray, an additional film for the screen and a cable with a 3.5 mm connector. As you understand, there is no audio jack on the device itself.

Charging is really fast, the smartphone reaches 100% in 3.5 hours. Modes up to 9 volts 2 amperes and 12 volts 1.5 amperes are supported.

Adapter from Type C to 3.5 mm. is a harmful trend borrowed from the iPhone. The technology is of course supported directly by Type C itself, through which the analog signal is transmitted. However, in practice, all such implementations have very poor measurements and, in fact, rather interfere.

The fact that the signal is transmitted analogue is indirectly confirmed by the possibility of using the “tail” as an antenna for a radio; in digital form this would simply be impossible.

But in fact, the question is not even about quality. When listening on headphones, the volume of the amplifier is quite enough, there are as many as 3 free divisions left, and the resulting “dirt” is often more beneficial to the recording. However, you often simply forget that very “tail”. When you leave the house, you only take your headphones and phone, but the adapter remains on the shelf and, accordingly, instead of music you enjoy the “voice of the urban.”

This is, of course, not the whole set; I left the most interesting part for dessert - the silicone bumper.

For my taste, the bumper is a little thick, but at the same time it fully compensates for the protruding camera block of the smartphone, which at the same time remains even slightly recessed.

Another advantage of the bumper is the “reinforced” corners. I am sure that if it falls on this part, there is almost no danger to the device.

The cutouts are all in place, and tactile protrusions are made for the buttons.

In general, it’s a pretty good bumper and, in combination with a smartphone with a large battery, adds to its impressiveness. It turns out to be a kind of armored vehicle.

Design/Ergonomics

In terms of design, we have a classic modern smartphone, except that they didn’t manage to copy the “bangs” from the iPhone. And so: an 18:9 screen, good assembly, a metal frame and, to lighten the weight, a plastic back cover with imitation antennas printed on it. One of the main advantages I would like to highlight is that the device is extremely lightweight. Having a weight of 205 grams for a device with a 6200mAh battery is undoubtedly a success.

The factory film was applied a little crookedly, so the complete one will come in handy.

The metal tray on the left side for two inserts or inserts and memory cards fits in easily and becomes flush with the body.

On the right side there is a power button and a volume rocker.

The top end is completely empty.

At the bottom there are two perforations for a multimedia speaker and microphone, as well as a USB Type C connector.

OTG is of course supported.

But there are questions about the speaker volume. Of course, he plays well, but for music from VK he is somewhat quiet. On the other hand, here we have Mediatek, which means that absolutely any user, using the engineering menu, can raise the maximum volume as he needs. Mediatek has its advantages.

On the back we have a slightly protruding block of two cameras, a dual LED flash and a fingerprint scanner. There are no questions about the scanner, the fingerprint is recognized quite quickly, no worse than in last year’s flagship Xiaomi Mi5s.

On the front there is a huge juicy 6-inch display with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and FullHD+ resolution. The screen is really very high quality, in addition there is support for MiraVision technology and multi-touch for as many as 10 touches.

Viewing angles are beyond praise: no inversion, no reduction in contrast - everything is just perfect.

Naturally, there is an event indicator, as without it there are also impressive indentations at the top and bottom. Yes, it was quite possible to place standard Android touch buttons here, but alas, only on-screen ones. Fortunately, you can customize them as you please.

Battery and autonomy

The main advantage of the Vernee X is, of course, its huge, by smartphone standards, 6200mAh battery. As described above, it takes about 3.5 hours to charge with the included charger. Testing with a USB tester showed that about 5600mAh is poured into the device.

At the same time, the autonomy of the smartphone, in my opinion, could be even better. Although, the device plays FullHD video at maximum brightness for about 20 hours, and you can play productive games for about 8 hours. These are really very impressive indicators and it is almost impossible to land such a device in 1 day. On average, a full charge will last you 2-3 days, depending on the intensity of use.

For those who want maximum savings, I recommend using the energy saving mode. And for extreme gamers, you can use the maximum performance mode and, of course, enable DuraSpeed, which allocates all resources to one single application.

Interface

The interface runs on almost bare but proud Android 7.1.1. Even despite the ubiquitous advertising banners about Android 8.1, in reality we have seven.

The shell was called VOS, which, due to the lack of firmware, allows me to recall the famous line of the fable: “and VOS is still there.” Of course, the device does not have any serious software problems, so the lack of updates is quite understandable. However, I can still find fault, and if I can, I will.

Everything is standard here with software goodies. Separately, you can highlight only face unlocking. However, it only works in good lighting and with the help of the camera, which is why it is still more of a toy.

Connection

Like any modern Chinese, everything is in perfect order with communication frequencies.

WiFi is good, but only 2.4GHz.

There is an electronic compass, and I can even praise the quality of navigation: it catches satellites instantly, even in the center of the room, where my S7 Edge is unable to catch anything.

Iron

Regarding iron, everything is not so clear. On the one hand, there is a good 8-core Mediatek Helio P23 (MTK6763) processor, many different sensors.

Fast memory modules: 4GB of RAM with a speed of up to 5400 MB/s and 64 GB of ROM, which gains up to 216 MB/s for reading and 130 MB/s for writing.

There are as many as 74,000 parrots in Antutu.

And the rest of the benchmarks show quite good results.

But, unfortunately, only the dual-core Mali-G71 MP2 is responsible for graphics.

Of course, there is no noticeable throttling.

But at the maximum settings of World of Tank Blitz, the speed sometimes drops to an unplayable 16 FPS, with an average value of about 30. So, of course, you can play productive games, but at an average graphics setting.

Cameras

They lied to us as usual with the cameras: I can’t check the front modules, but I’m inclined to believe that it is 8 MP + 0.3 MP, and not 15 + 5. Pictures from the front camera turn out normal, it’s difficult to find fault here, but it’s definitely not 13 MP.

The main modules are stated to be 16 MP + 5 MP, but in reality there is a main 13 MP Sony IMX258 sensor, the second camera is also most likely 0.3 MP, it’s so terrible.

Photos with background blur are not only bad, they don't get any points out of 10 from me. It’s better to simply forget about the presence of second modules on this device: it takes a photo slowly, blurs in a circle and the result is no more than 0.3 MP.

However, there are PRO and HDR modes in the settings. HDR certainly makes sense, but the resulting photos also call its use into question.

But I was quite pleased with the performance of the main Sony IMX258 module: the pictures turned out to be quite good. The general plans are well detailed.

If desired, you can distinguish the duck.

The beetle also turned out simply excellent.

Blurring the background in macro photographs is not trivial and adds some kind of movement effect.

Of course, this is not a plus everywhere, but for the most part the “flowers” turned out great.

There are no questions about shooting text either. If you are a student or often take pictures of documents, then the camera will more than suit you.

Under artificial lighting, price tags are clearly visible.

I took a few photos of the headphones and the jack for myself.

In poor lighting the quality varies. I liked the photo of the savings bank, but the next one “near the cafe” - not so much.

Shooting a poorly lit house is a C grade.

Selfies with flash, which young people love so much.

In general, as you understand, I was more or less satisfied with the camera, with the exception of bokeh and HDR.

But shooting a video is just a “disco”. Not only is everything recorded in prehistoric 3GP, but also when shooting, the camera constantly refocuses, which is why the resulting videos have absolutely no value.

conclusions

I will highlight the main disadvantages of the device:

  • middle speaker
  • average graphics performance
  • adapter for 3.5 mm.
  • useless second cameras
  • bad video shooting

Main advantages:

  • good main camera
  • 18 x 9 screen
  • 4GB RAM
  • face unlock
  • all frequencies
  • good volume reserve in headphones
  • excellent FullHD+ screen
  • large 6200mAh battery
  • armor bumper
  • fast charging
  • a light weight

Summing up and taking into account the main focus of the Vernee X , I don’t think that I will buy it as a gaming smartphone or just for the camera, which is why I can call the model quite successful. But there are still complaints about the device and there is a great desire for VOS to move and we get fresh firmware with bugs fixed.

FIND OUT THE CURRENT PRICE FOR VERNEE X

Performance

The Helio P23 does a good job loading apps, but it's a bit slower than the Snapdragon 625 in devices from Xiaomi and a number of other companies for about the same money. This is especially noticeable in the graphic capabilities. However, its performance is on par with other devices based on Helio P20 and Helio P23, such as UMiDiGI Z1 Pro and Ulefone Power 3. The processor is helped by 4 or 6 GB of RAM. There is no particular point in chasing maximum RAM if you are not a zealous maximalist. And 4 GB is enough.

But in the case of permanent memory, which can be 64 or 128 GB, depending on the amount of RAM, it makes sense to pay extra. But, again, not for everyone. 64 GB is still quite enough for me, but if you adore TV shows and music, and only watch and listen to it all offline, then take a closer look at the older version of Vernee X, which you can also buy today, but a little more expensive.

Analogs from Qualcomm, even cheaper ones, outperform the Helio P23 not only in terms of graphics capabilities, but they are also better in terms of energy saving. Helio P23 is built using a 16nm process technology, which is not bad, but the 14nm process of the same Snapdragon 625 looks even better.

I don’t really want to talk too much about the performance – it’s a classic for this processor and this money. Most games can be run at maximum graphics settings, but the most demanding ones are still difficult for the graphics chip to handle. In this regard, of course, even more affordable smartphones with Snapdragon look more interesting. In everyday tasks everything is fine. In AnTuTu, Vernee X scores about 65,000 points.

Communication, sound, interfaces, navigation

Helio P23 supports VoLTE and ViLTE features which work great. Works very well on Vernee X and 4G LTE, demonstrating high speed. The quality of Wi-Fi is average, there is support for 5 GHz frequencies. The speed decreases when the device moves away from the router, but without sudden drops, as on other smartphones. Bluetooth, not the latest version 4.0, works well, GPS is sometimes slow, but it is quite accurate. There have been a few issues with navigation, but this doesn't happen often.

Vernee X has decent audio performance. The maximum volume without an amplifier is average. The speaker of the smartphone is really not loud enough to hear something in a noisy environment, which is actually very important given the lack of a headphone jack. But unless you're in the middle of a highway, sound won't be a problem. The sound quality is definitely satisfactory. I really like the clarity and difference between the tones. However, I still think the speakers lack bass.

The fingerprint sensor is quite accurate, but not particularly fast. Everything is fine with other sensors: proximity, illumination, gyroscope, Hall and others. In general, Vernee X is suitable even for VR. There is even a fairly good working Face Unlock, which allows you to unlock your smartphone using your face. The smartphone was not left without an event indicator, which was located in the usual place.

Software

Vernee X runs on Android 7.0, but the company promises to update the smartphone to Android 8.0 Oreo soon. The proprietary VOS shell is used, which has its pros and cons. For example, switching between home screens and accessing the notification center is quick and easy, no hassles. However, accessing the application menu by swiping and tapping on an icon is slow, which is very noticeable. This is strange because everything else is perfectly optimized. Let's hope Vernee fixes this in the future.

The interface is completely in Russian, in the settings you can find the already familiar additional options (like Miravision, Hotknot), in an abundance of various gestures.

Camera

The Vernee X camera has a lot of potential, but the software and optimization leave much to be desired. Which, in principle, is not surprising - most of its analogues from China have problems with optimization. The main camera is represented by two sensors – 16 and 5 megapixels. The main sensor has an f/2.0 aperture.

Vernee X can take acceptable photos even in poor lighting, something that not all analogues at the same price can boast of. In good lighting, the photos will turn out even better - even cheaper smartphones take good photos during the day these days.

I must say, Vernee went overboard with HDR this time. The mode works quickly and correctly. One weird thing about HDR is that some photos look like they were taken in Borderlands style. They look good, but I'm sure there will be those who won't like it.

I was pleased with the minimal amount of noise in the photographs - the closest alternatives will have more of them. However, Vernee X has some really big software issues that they need to fix ASAP. Autofocus takes 5 seconds to settle on anything and I missed a lot of good shots because of this.

Another downside of the Vernee X is the front camera. Despite two sensors (13+5 megapixels), the video recorded is very mediocre, and the sound is also poor. Things are better with selfies, but the quality is clearly not up to the level you would expect from a smartphone with a pair of cameras on the front, also with a flash. The front camera software is clearly not complete. Vernee should fix this ASAP.

Video quality is satisfactory, but autofocus is again an issue. I'm disappointed that there's no 4K support here, even though the hardware should support it. What Vernee and other companies like Ulefone should do is provide 4K support - after all, smartphones are clearly not positioned as ultra-low-cost smartphones.

Vernee X

Continuing the tradition of large-screen smartphones with narrow side frames, the company offered its fans another miracle - Vernee X. It can only be compared with models such as Oukitel K10 (albeit with a better design) or Huawei Mate 9, as well as a number of others. In this case, not only the external data will be similar, but also the internal content, components of the hardware and video cameras.

Design approach

The bright touch display immediately attracts attention with its rich color scheme and large size. In order to appreciate the rest, it is worth considering:

  • display size 6 inches without side frames and minimal top/bottom;
  • streamlined corners of the case allow you to comfortably hold your smartphone in one hand;
  • the metal case reliably protects the internal filling from external mechanical influences;
  • The headset has a new type of slot that compensates for the old version of USB Type-C;
  • The presence of a dual rear and regular front camera will ensure the need for photography.

Contents under cover

Having a wide screen, the internal hardware of the gadget is unlikely to be weak. Adhering to this opinion, manufacturers equipped the new Vernet X with a popular operating system - Android 7.1 with a supporting VOS shell.

To perform basic processes, a chipset with 8 cores is used - MediaTek Helio P23. In support of it, Mali-G71 is installed for graphic purposes. Any everyday games and programs, applications and TV series run without problems, especially since the speed is maintained by 6 gigs of RAM. With such indicators, the presence of internal memory of 128 GB should last for a long time, and if necessary, you can expand the storage volume to 256 GB - there is a special slot for a memory card.

It’s worth taking a closer look at the video capabilities of the gadget. For panoramic photography of the surrounding nature, interesting architectural buildings, or just real-life situations, you should use the rear module. It contains two sensors at once, the power of one is 16 megapixels, and the other is 5 megapixels. In combination with aperture 2.0, a Dual LED flash and optical stabilization, high-quality photographs are guaranteed.

For a portrait version or a simple video conversation, the 13 MP front camera is quite suitable. Her ability to recognize individual facial features, the format of continuous shooting and strict adherence to color is amazing.

Do not forget that any electronic device requires periodic recharging. Thanks to the presence of a 6200 mAh lithium polymer battery, performance will decrease only after two to three days of continuous use.

Results

The power of the hardware, battery capacity and beauty of design will allow the new smartphone to take its rightful place in the global market. And consumers will only have to appreciate it.

Battery

I'll tell you briefly about the battery. I kept the screen on for 7 hours straight and it drained the battery to 20%. With intensive use, YouTube videos, games and more, the smartphone worked for 85 hours, which is amazing. Truth be told, I think the Vernee X's battery is slightly better than the Ulefone Power 3. It took around 4 hours to fully charge the phone, which is decent considering the battery capacity. Fast charging technology is supported.

Battery

The last feature of the Vernee X is its large 6200mAh battery. Vernee knows that performance, camera and battery are the key features of a modern smartphone. The manufacturer says that the new smartphone can work up to four days on a single charge. Sounds amazing! Moreover, the smartphone supports fast charging technology and this large battery can be charged from 0 to 100% in just 2 hours.

Vernee X: price, where to buy

As befits a Chinese smartphone, Vernee X can be purchased in many Chinese online stores. Naturally, Vernee X is offered by AliExpress, GearBest, and Banggood. The price of Vernee X for 4+64 GB is about 11,500 rubles. Buying Vernee X with 6+128 GB will cost about 16,000 rubles. Below are links to the best deals.

Appearance

Vernee X is equipped with a 6-inch Full HD+ display. Its aspect ratio is 18:9, and the display occupies 83.8% of the front panel. As you can see, this is a frameless smartphone. This means that its size can be compared to a 5.5-inch device.

Vernee X is a flagship smartphone, so Full HD resolution is very important when you play games or VR and watch movies. Most Chinese phones come with HD+ resolution.

Bottom line

Vernee X is a new wave smartphone. Beautiful, sophisticated and affordable, but still budget-friendly. Yes, the manufacturer provided it with a modern full-screen design, a good display, installed 4 cameras and 2 flashes, and even provided Face Unlock, but most of the innovations are aimed at attracting users who are greedy for all these newfangled options. In reality, cameras can boast of their capabilities only on paper, suffering from poor optimization, the hardware is so-so, although the manufacturer tried to divert attention from the processor with impressive amounts of memory.

Be that as it may, for 11,500 rubles, the younger variation of Vernee X is quite worthy of the right to life. For this money you get a high-quality large display, a huge battery, a very stylish design, albeit not polished, but still trendy features. Yes, the processor is not comme il faut, but it is not MT6750 either. The big drawback, in my opinion, is the lack of NFC and unfinished software for the camera. In the latter case, most likely, Vernee will release updates that will improve the situation - the smartphone is completely new.
