JBL Free wireless earbuds have seriously competed with Apple AirPods.

In terms of functionality, they are not inferior, but users do not have to pay extra for the brand, and seriously pay extra.

Although, plugs and inserts differ somewhat in shape and advantages.

Earbuds are much easier to insert into your ears, but earplugs still take some getting used to.

On the other hand, plugs provide better sound insulation, which is simply necessary when you have to travel frequently on public transport or be in noisy places all the time.

It is not so easy to develop completely wireless earplugs . After all, each tiny capsule contains a separate battery and Bluetooth receiver. Thanks to this, the capsules are not connected to each other by wire and are so convenient to use. At the same time, you cannot use a ready-made solution from Apple; you need to look for your own unique solution. It seems that the developers did a great job with this, because the completely wireless JBL Free plugs are rapidly gaining popularity. Still would! After all, these are wireless vacuum plugs at a very reasonable price.

You have been blocked from seeing ads.

How convenient are they for everyday use? What sound do they make? Are users satisfied with them? Let's look at all this in more detail.

Let's start with the technical data. Here are the general characteristics of these little ones.

Which JBL headphones are best to buy?

JBL has an interesting approach to producing wireless Bluetooth headphones. Many wired models have a wireless alternative. In terms of sound, wireless models are inferior to equivalent wired ones.

A similar approach (the best models are wired/wireless) is implemented by the most powerful manufacturers: Sony, Sennheiser, Philips, etc.

Everyone chooses a headset based on their personal preferences and tastes. People who play computer games will choose over-ear headphones with a good microphone. For those who want to enjoy music on the way to work, earbuds or earplugs are perfect.

In general, the choice of headphones is extensive and personal convenience sometimes exceeds basic needs. For example, you can sacrifice sound when listening to music for the sake of having a good microphone, if necessary. Or, on the contrary, make the sound the priority, not paying attention to other shortcomings.

So, let's move on to the rating of the best wireless headphones from JBL.

Design and build

First of all, the JBL Free plugs are quite large. Weighs 99 grams . For those with miniature ears, they may be too large and cause some discomfort.

Let's just say they are a little larger than usual.

This is a classic in design. JBL Free is available in two colors: black and white. Accessories will be provided to match the selected color of the model, which is certainly nice.

The plug capsules are made of matte plastic. Each copy has a button with a company label. Indicator lighting surrounds the entire body of the plug.

Rice. No. 3. Convenient for sports

Although the fragments fit securely in the ears during everyday wear, it is worth remembering that this is still not a sports model.

If there is a significant release of moisture, they may begin to slide and accidentally jump out of the ears. Of course, a lot depends on individual anatomical features; for some, the capsules fit very tightly and reliably, while for others they may not fit so organically.

The degree of moisture protection of the case also plays a role here.

It is not advisable to get this model completely wet. They are definitely not designed for complete immersion in water.

If someone sweats a lot while playing sports, there is a danger of not only losing the headphones, but also damaging the speakers with excess moisture. In this case, it is better to buy a special sports model.

Rice. No. 4. In white

Another side of the coin of completely wireless headphones is that you need to adapt to carrying them with you.

You can carry them in the charging case. This way they definitely won’t get confused.

In addition, they will always be in good shape, which is also nice. However, the case itself is rather large and hard. This can cause discomfort, because you just can’t put it in your pocket.

You can, of course, simply throw the headphones into a bag pocket or clothing pocket, but due to their small size there is a risk of losing them. So, the lack of wires has its downsides.

Why are they so bad?

In the spring of 2020, I received JBL Free X wireless in-ear headphones. At that time, they cost 11 thousand rubles. My attitude towards the brand is cool: the design of some products seems frivolous, and in any electronics store, counters with JBL acoustics are usually surrounded by schoolchildren.

I got JBL Free X headphones for free - brand new, white. I wouldn’t buy such headphones myself, but since I had the opportunity to test them, why not?

Problems with Free X began when connecting to a smartphone. If previously they were connected to another smart phone, then connecting to a new one turned into a pain: I had to try again, turn the headphones off and on again, and even cancel the pairing.

Unlike AirPods, which connected instantly, JBL took a long time to fiddle with. And this is on an Android smartphone.

The headphones, like their case, look cheap and not at all premium. Although they are well-built, there is no point in comparing them with the same AirPods at the same price.

The JBL case is large - you can feel it in your jeans pocket. But at least they didn’t break the JBL batteries - they lasted the stated 4 hours of playback on a single charge. But with the case’s battery, everything was ambiguous: it seemed that it was discharged faster than the promised 20 hours.

The case and magnetic mounts for charging are made somewhat clumsily and do not inspire confidence. When I sold these headphones, a couple of months later the buyer called me and told me that one of the headphones did not attach to the case - sad!

However, if design is a matter of taste, then sound is what you buy headphones for. And the sound in JBL Free X is not good, but very loud. I'm not an audiophile and have never used headphones more expensive than Free X and AirPods. But everything I listened to in recent years turned out to be better than this misunderstanding for 11 thousand rubles.

Using these headphones as a headset is not a good idea. If everything is fine indoors, then on a noisy street - with a lot of traffic and wind - a conversation on the phone will be similar to a dialogue with a pensioner who forgot to put on his hearing aid: “Huh? What? I can’t hear a thing!”

Now the mediocre JBL Free X has dropped greatly in price - on Yandex.Market they are sold for 5K. In my opinion, these headphones are not even worth the money, since there are better options.

  • Honor FlyPods Youth Edition - not the most autonomous, but very stylish - 3650₽
  • Meizu POP2 - comfortable headphones that hold a charge for up to 8 hours - 3750₽
  • Xiaomi Redmi AirDots Pro - as cool as AirPods - 3990₽
