Specifications Asus ZenBook Flip S
The ZenBook Flip S features an interesting combination of colors without making the design seem too flashy or provocative. Concentric rings on the lid and diamond-cut edges emphasize that this is an expensive laptop.
The build quality is high - despite its lightness, the laptop maintains balance in any position. With a weight of 1.1 kg and a thickness of 1.1 cm, the ZenBook Flip S is only 230 g heavier than the ZenBook 3. But, it can be used in 4 modes: Notebook, Tablet, Tent and Multimedia. The laptop's narrow frames didn't stop Asus from placing a webcam above the display.
The design uses aircraft-grade aluminum alloy, which is 50% stronger than usual. The Asus ZenBook Flip S feels like a solid piece of metal. The hinge rotates easily in tablet mode and holds the screen stably.
A powerful processor heats up, and a weak cooling system is powerless. The case becomes especially hot in the lower part.
Appearance
Thin ASUS ultrabooks with a pattern of concentric circles on the lid and a wedge-shaped profile have been on sale for 7 years now, but the line continues to be replenished with current models that retain family features.
Flip S, although it has a transformer design with a 360-degree rotating screen, is a typical ZenBook, thin (1.09 cm) and light (1.1 kg), so you can constantly carry it with you.
The body is well assembled, and the lack of structural rigidity is not felt, unless you specifically carry out torsion tests, as we did.
The price you have to pay for portability is a modest set of connectors: mini Jack and only two USB 3.1 type C on the sides of the device. Moreover, through them the transformer laptop is recharged and connected to external monitors. Mini Jack and USB are located so close that connected devices may interfere with each other. There is an additional docking station available for the ASUS ZenBook Flip S, but we didn't have a chance to examine it.
A small number of connectors does not mean that the edges of the laptop are empty. On the left, a lot of space is occupied by the cooling system grille, next to it there is a tiny charging indicator.
On the right is an LED that indicates the PC is in sleep mode, as well as a fingerprint sensor strip and tablet-style buttons. One is responsible for power and two for volume control.
The stereo speakers are located on the bottom of the laptop and play “table-top”, using the surface to reflect sound waves. The sound is loud and clear.
The laptop stands on four rubberized feet, and when the laptop lid is folded back, it rises slightly, supported by a hinge called ErgoLift. This pair of metal hinges, coated with glossy plastic for beauty, is responsible for the transformation of the ASUS ZenBook Flip S. The laptop opens with some effort. Therefore, you can’t handle it with one hand, but on the other hand, the hinges give the structure stability, which is especially important when interacting with a touch screen. It doesn't wobble with every touch, which is great.
Connectors and ports
Compact laptops leave little room for ports. For example, MacBook and ZenBook 3 have only one USB 3.1 Type-C connector, so you have to use adapters or USB hubs.
The ZenBook Flip S has two Type-C ports and a 3.5mm headset jack, which is better than the competition, but connectivity is still limited. Any port can be used to charge the device, including through adapters from third-party manufacturers.
The kit includes a docking station with another Type-C connector, an HDMI port and USB 3.0 Type-A. The station matches the Flip S style and looks appropriate when connected.
Design and usability
At first glance, this is an ordinary laptop with a slightly strange display mount. But this is a little different. This hinge allows you to fully unfold the screen and turn the laptop into a tablet. A trick like this isn't strictly necessary for a device like this, but it can be very handy in some use cases.
If we talk about ZenBook Flip as a laptop, then the device is quite compact, for a 13-inch one: 30.5 × 19.6 × 1.69 cm. The weight is quite noticeable, but for such dimensions it is quite expected - 1.3 kg. But for a tablet this is a lot; holding it suspended for a long time will be uncomfortable.
There will be two design options on sale: blue and dark grey. The aluminum body looks and feels good. At the same time, the lower part of the case has good legs that practically do not slide on the table.
Our ZenBook Flip model has two variations: one includes an infrared sensor for unlocking the user's face and a virtual Num-pad on the trackpad, and the second without them. We have the second one on test. For some reason, this laptop has more ports for connecting external devices. On the right side of the case are two USB-C, HDMI and a charging socket; on the left is USB-A, 3.5 mm Jack, a pair of indicators and a power button. The second version was left without USB-A and HDMI.
By unfolding the laptop into a tablet as usual, the keyboard will turn off and the display will change orientation depending on the rotation. To be honest, I haven’t yet met people whose work involves this model of computer use, but I’m willing to bet the target audience is travelers who need more space for work and entertainment on a plane or train. I think that those who love this format of computers will be quite satisfied with the updated ZenBook Flip.
Flip S keyboard
It's amazing that the Asus ZenBook Flip S fits a full-size keyboard, and every key is pressed clearly and accurately. Golden backlight with three brightness levels does not irritate the eyes. It's not the best keyboard in the world, but it's great for such a thin device.
The ZenBook Flip S's large, smooth touchpad supports all Microsoft Precision multi-touch gestures. The integrated touchpad buttons perceive clicks on too small an area - you have to constantly look at them so as not to make a mistake.
The 10-point touch display is very accurate and responsive. The surface of the screen seems sticky, so for control it is better to use an active stylus that recognizes 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity.
The Flip S' fingerprint sensor is located on the right side, it accurately identifies the owner and supports passwordless login via Windows 10 Hello.
Display
Despite the small size of the device, a 13.3-inch diagonal screen fits into the top cover. It is surrounded by small frames, and the display itself covers 80% of the front space. The resolution in the basic version is 1920x1080 pixels, but in more expensive versions you can get 4K. In both cases, the screens are touch-sensitive and covered with Gorilla Glass. The standard scaling was 150%, but 125% works better for me.
They didn’t skimp on the matrix itself. The IPS screen on the laptop looks great. The manufacturer promises 100% sRGB coverage. In practice, the colors are not oversaturated, and there are no complaints about the viewing angles. It's great to just work on this screen, watch movies and photos. The picture is a little warmer than normal by eye, which will be critical only for working with photography, but the rest of the time it makes it easier to work for a long time in front of the computer. In any case, there is a proprietary Splendid Utility application to adjust the temperature. So I can't complain about the picture.
So far, 50% illumination was enough for me everywhere, but it’s worth considering that there was no sunny weather and the rooms were quite dark. I assume that under direct sunlight with a glossy screen it will not be very comfortable. The sensor works great, even small elements in Windows can be accessed simply by touching the screen, and it also supports third-party styluses.
Laptop display
Asus ZenBook Flip S only offers Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) - and this is enough, considering that the diagonal is 13.3 inches. 70% of the AdobeRGB color range and 94% of sRGB are covered - slightly more than on the equally thin and light Acer Spin 7. Color accuracy is 2.82 - less than 1.0 is considered ideal.
The brightness is 285 nits, which is not enough for working in strong lighting conditions, at least 300 nits is recommended. Due to the 2.4 gamma, dark scenes in films look worse. Contrast ratio - 720:1. For comparison, the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 QHD+ resolution, brightness is 251 nits, contrast ratio is 1120:1.
Despite the mediocre performance, the ZenBook Flip S's display is pleasant to work with, and the weak contrast does not prevent black text from appearing clearly against a white background. Most users will be happy with the quality of the screen, only professionals will need better color accuracy.

Speakers and sound
Asus and Harman Kardon have created a good audio system for the Asus ZenBook Flip S. There is even a separate IcePower AudioWizard application for setting up speakers, in which you can set the volume to maximum and select the mode: Music, Video Recording, Game or Speech.
The sound quality is excellent for watching videos, but there is some serious distortion at maximum volume. There is no bass.
The lineup
ASUS has many different lines of laptops, from budget options to top-end water-cooled gaming systems. It seems to me that ZenBook is the manufacturer’s most famous series of devices at the moment. At least the most recognizable.
And within the line there are subcategories, each of which has received some distinctive feature. In our case, ZenBook Flip S UX370 is according to the words. As the name implies, the laptop can be completely unfolded, turning it into a tablet. The format is not the most popular, but quite interesting.
Performance processor
Asus has installed an Intel Core i7-7500U, which puts the ZenBook Flip S ahead of competitors with low-power chips, such as the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 with a Core i7-7Y75.
In the benchmark Geekbench 4 test, the laptop scored 4,142 points in single-core mode and 8,158 in multi-core mode. The thicker HP Specter x360 scored 3,837 and 6,401, respectively.
In the system-intensive Handbrake test, which requires video encoding in H.265, everything took the Asus ZenBook Flip S longer than its competitors, and the processor may overheat. It completed this test in 1,477 seconds; the HP x360 Specter with the same processor completed encoding in 1,095 seconds. The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and Acer Spin 7 did it in 2,027 and 1,751 seconds.
The ZenBook Flip S doesn't get too hot during web browsing, emailing, and other everyday tasks, so the powerful processor usually doesn't get in the way of holding the laptop on your lap.
ZenBook Pro Series
Featuring a classic ultra-paper design, the new ZenBook Pro series features a 15.6-inch 4K display, a powerful Intel Core i7 H-series chip, and Nvidia GTX 1050Ti discrete mobile gaming graphics.
Laptop ZenBook Pro
The body thickness of the ZenBook Pro series models is only 18.9 mm. According to Asus, the device will be able to operate on a single battery charge for up to 14 hours.
The price tag for the ZenBook Pro model starts at $1,299.
Solid State SSD
A solid-state drive (SSD) with a SATA interface is installed to store information. Asus promises to soon introduce models with PCIe SSDs. SATA provides good performance, but lags behind PCIe - this is best seen in the CrystalDiskMark test.
The Sandisk X400 512 GB SATA SSD installed on the Asus ZenBook Flip S showed a read speed of 459 MB/s and a write speed of 411 MB/s. For comparison, the Samsung PM961 PCIe on the Lenovo Yoga 720 has a read speed of 2,060 MB/s and a write speed of 1,209 MB/s.
However, when surfing the web and checking email, maximum speed is not needed, and files and applications on the Flip S open without delay. The advantage of SSD PCle is noticeable only if you work with large amounts of information.
Touchpad and keyboard
The ASUS ZenBook Flip S keyboard is classic for laptops of this type. There is no number pad, a narrow top row of function keys, a single-line “Enter”, reduced “alt” and “ctrl”, a single “Win” on the left. The layout of the keys will seem familiar to owners of other ASUS laptops and macbook owners.
The scissor-type mechanism with a short stroke (1 mm) makes printing comfortable and quiet. The keys are backlit. The diodes are white, but the light guides are tinted and the letters look to match the design of the case - golden. The backlight is adjustable. There are three brightness levels to choose from.
Using keyboard shortcuts, you can put the laptop to sleep, turn on airplane mode, turn off the screen (useful when working with a separate monitor), configure the operating mode of the second display, disable the touchpad and adjust the sound. The latter is more of a tribute to tradition. Considering that the volume control is controlled by F10-F12 and you simply can’t reach them with one hand, the volume rocker at the end of the case turns out to be much more convenient.
ASUS seems to be proud of the touchpad installed in the ASUS ZenBook Flip S and emphasizes that it has a glass coating and recognizes gestures using Smart Gesture technology.
The surface is pleasant and slippery to the touch, but does not attract fingerprints. The touchpad is large - 115 by 70 millimeters, recognizes up to four simultaneous touches and ten different gestures such as zooming, minimizing windows, switching applications and desktops, launching Cortana, and this is not counting the emulation of clicks and highlighting areas. We have no complaints about the sensitivity of the touch layer, but the mechanics that allow you to press the corners of the touchpad like mouse buttons occasionally did not work in our laptop.
Equipment not for gaming
The Asus ZenBook Flip S laptop is practically unsuitable for gaming - there was no room for a separate video card, and the integrated Intel HD graphics are too weak.
In the Fire Strike test, the Flip S scored 997 points - on par with other hybrid laptops that can't handle anything but old games. For example, the puzzle game Candy Crush will run without problems, but with a resolution of 1080p and medium detail, the frame rate in Civilization VI was 12 fps. When selecting ultra detail, performance will drop to 6 fps. As you can see, it is impossible to play on any settings.
VivoBook Pro family
Asus is positioning the new VivoBook Pro series as a mid-range solution.
VivoBook Pro: mid-range price
VivoBook Pro models feature a 15.6-inch 4K display, Core i7 processor and Nvidia GTX 1050 discrete graphics.
Deliveries of the VivoBook Pro model range are promised in the summer; the starting price for models in this series starts at $799.

Long lasting battery
This compact laptop fits a battery with a capacity of only 39 watt-hours. In Basemark's most demanding test, the battery lasted about 2.5 hours - a decent result considering the powerful components of the system. When playing video, the Asus ZenBook Flip S battery ran out in 9.5 hours, which is about the same as competitors and an hour less than the XPS 13 2-in-1. In the test of opening looped web pages, the Asus laptop drained in 6 hours - not bad, although 1.5 hours less than the XPS 13 2-in-1.
The Flip S's performance is good enough for long-lasting battery life, although it won't last all day under heavy loads. Fast charging technology allows you to charge the battery from 0 to 60% in 49 minutes - a useful feature in a pinch.
Affordable modern ultrabook
The ASUS ZenBook Flip 13 laptop of the described modification is a striking example of a proven and well-built compact 13-inch ultrabook (13.3 to be precise), which is often called a transformer. Largely thanks to the ability to fix the top part with a 360-degree screen. The presented model is a modified and updated version of its predecessor.
Notable features include increased productivity (this will be discussed in more detail in the corresponding thematic section), as well as an even more compact body (10% thinner). The frame around the display is almost invisible. The so-called usable area is about 90%, so nothing distracts the eye from what is happening on the screen. The display itself deserves special praise. NanoEdge format speaks for itself. In this case, we are talking about optimal saturation, correct display of the color palette, and the possibility of individual customization. Those who decide to order the ASUS ZenBook Flip 13 UX362FA should not be afraid of the design with a screen that rotates in all directions. The technology involves the use of a proprietary hinge that securely holds the monitor in any position. It is important to mention another related feature here. So, if you set a position close to the standard one of 135 degrees, the body of the ultrabook rises slightly, which allows you to take a comfortable position for your hands when typing. The design is quite durable. The manufacturer provides more than 20,000 cycles for full rotation.
Many will definitely decide to buy ASUS ZenBook Flip 13 UX362FA because of its attractive appearance. On the one hand, this is a laptop that does not stand out with bright inserts and other features. On the other hand, there is a universal format, the rigor and minimalism of which clearly plays into its hands. Thus, a stylish ultrabook is equally suitable for executives and top managers, as well as for students or creative youth. The metal finish of the case allows you to count on longer durability compared to plastic counterparts. If we talk about the dimensions, they are impressive: width 16.9 mm, and weight only 1.3 kg. ASUS on its official website states that there are 40 stages in the process of finishing the case. In practice, the device really looks gorgeous. Extremely pleasant to the touch. Fingerprints and minor dirt are practically invisible. The provided security system should be given a high rating. The present infrared camera provides for authentication of the owner's face. This provides access to the system and personal data stored on the computer. It is also important to note the long battery life, which during testing amounted to 11-13 hours of operation (depending on the load). Integrated high-speed battery charging technology (60% within 49 minutes).
Bottom line
The convertible Asus ZenBook Flip S is one of the few hybrid laptops that can actually be used as a tablet. Stylish and compact, with a 360-degree flip-out screen, it exudes performance, quality and elegance.
Two USB Type-C ports and a miniature docking station with additional connectors allow you to connect various accessories. Thanks to its modern design and components, the ZenBook Flip S will remain relevant for at least several years - just don't put it on your lap under heavy loads.
Are there any alternatives?
There are many hybrid Windows PCs, but those that are comparable in compactness to the ZenBook Flip S have a weak processor. The main competitor is the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, which is 1.37 cm thick and weighs 1.22 kg. A configuration with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD is available for $1,600 (93,000 rubles) - that is, the heavier and thicker laptop from Dell costs $200 more than the Flip S.
Acer Spin 7 with a 14-inch display is another hybrid laptop. Due to the Full HD resolution, the image on its large screen is not clear enough. There are no models with similar components; for 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD drive you will have to pay $1,250 (RUB 72,500). Yes, it is cheaper, but the performance, battery life and build quality of the Spin 7 are worse.
Those who do not need thinness and lightness should pay attention to the HP Specter x360 - long battery life, no overheating problems, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB PCIe SSD for $1,350 (78,500 rubles).
Benefits of Asus ZenBook Flip S
- Excellent build quality
- Elegant and sophisticated design
- High performance
- Comfortable keyboard

- The case heats up
VivoBook S series
During the presentation of the VivoBook S line of affordable laptops, Jimmy Shi called the series “a mainstream laptop that will never be the same.”
VivoBook S laptop design
The VivoBook S family is made in aluminum cases in the style of the MacBook Pro with a thickness of 17.9 mm. The devices are equipped with Intel Core i7 processors and Nvidia GTX 940MX discrete graphics.
Affordable VivoBook S laptops
The entire VivoBook S line will be represented by models with a 15-inch screen, the resolution of which is not specified. However, with a recommended price of $499 for the VivoBook S model, we can assume that it will be something like Full HD, and at this price it will be an interesting offer for its price range.
Software
ASUS ZenBook Flip S runs on Windows 10 Home version. In addition, Windows 10 Pro is installed on the convertible laptop. There are no Linux options for sale. The operating system is not overloaded with additional software, starts quickly and works stably. A set of proprietary utilities pre-installed by ASUS includes:
- Free version of McAfee antivirus;
- ASUS GiftBox – downloader program for a large set of partner software;
