ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 review: budget tablet from the creators of Nexus 7

The Taiwanese company ASUS continues to develop its line of budget MEMO Pad tablets. Last year, the company released the first two devices in this series - the ten-inch Smart 10” (ME301T) and the very simple seven-inch ME172V with a TN matrix and a single-core processor. The first gadget was quite successful, but the younger one didn’t turn out very well. We didn't even write about it.

It's time to get better. This year at the Computex exhibition, the company updated both the older model, which received a high-resolution screen and an Intel Atom processor, and the younger one, which is the subject of today’s material. The MEMO Pad HD 7 has more than enough differences compared to its predecessor - now it is truly a full-fledged tablet that costs very little, but at the same time proudly bears the ASUS logo on the back panel.

⇡#Appearance

The exterior of the tablet gives away its low cost: the gadget is quite well-fed - its thickness, taking into account the protruding rim of the rear camera, is a little more than a centimeter - and the design of the case as a whole is devoid of any frills. A typical seven-inch Android tablet.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - front panel

There are no navigation keys on the front of the tablet. The “Back”, “Menu” and “Home” buttons standard for the operating system are software, they are located directly on the screen. At the top of the panel is the front camera lens.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 full face

The layout of the tablet's controls is quite familiar. The power and volume control buttons are located on the top end of the device, the micro-USB interface and the 3.5 mm audio jack are placed on the left side. The headphone jack is not in the best location - during operation, this is the place where you want to grab your hand. The memory card slot is located at the bottom end.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - sides

The back panel of the tablet is made of plastic, and it is far from the most durable. The “back” of the MEMO Pad HD 7 is easily scratched and gets dirty quite quickly. The panel is glossy, non-textured, however, despite this, the tablet does not try to slip out of your hands. On the back of the device there is a main five-megapixel camera lens and an external speaker slot.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 is assembled quite well. During testing, we did not find any critical gaps. The plastic creaks a little when you squeeze the body, but we’ve already gotten used to it. On sale, this tablet can theoretically be found in different colors: white, pink, light green, dark blue and dark gray.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - various colors

The front side will be black in any case, and only the back panel will be different in color. Interestingly, the first three of these versions have glossy backs, but the last two have matte ones. So this tablet is also suitable for those who value practical design - they just need to pay attention to the dark colors.

Asus Memo Pad 7 Review

Asus has plenty of experience making low-cost Android tablets, having been the maker of two Nexus 7s from Google. Asus has translated this knowledge and experience into the new Memo Pad HD 7, delivering impressive results. This year, for its Memo Pad 7, Asus decided to ditch the ARM-based processor, instead opting to use an Intel product; 4-core Intel Atom Z3745 processor with a clock frequency of 1.33 GHz.

The new processor showed one of the best results in the SunSpider JavaScript tests for the Asus Memo Pad 7, which we reviewed. We were amazed when the inexpensive tablet was able to complete the tests in 598.3ms. That's almost twice as fast as the Google Nexus 7 and even faster than the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet. The Memo Pad 7 really impresses when it comes to browser performance, and is incredibly responsive when browsing the web.

This is one of the areas where the tablet is in competition with the Tesco Hudl, which shares its price range. Where Hudl can feel slow in rendering and scrolling pages, Memo Pad offers neat and smooth scrolling with zooming. This is a great tablet for web browsing.

Even the gaming performance is beyond what one would expect from a tablet at this price. In our 3DMark Ice Storm Extreme tests, the Memo Pad 7 managed to score a very respectable 7,386 points, putting it above the Google Nexus 7 and well above Hudl's 2,683 points. The difference was much more significant when we ran tests in unlimited mode, where the Memo Pad 7 scored 13,521 points and the Nexus 7 (2013) 10,224 points. These numbers put it on par with the much more expensive Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4, meaning the Asus Memo Pad 7 will effortlessly handle any game you can find. Remember that the tablet is powered by Intel processors, which means you may find an app or game that won't work on the tablet, but everything we tried worked fine.

Even the build quality of the Pad 7 is impressive. The Asus tablet is slightly smaller than the Google Nexus 7, but slightly thicker at 9.6 mm. It's also five grams heavier, but you won't notice the extra weight during use. The Memo Pad 7 also comes in a variety of colors, including the standard black and white, as well as bold yellow, blue and red options for fans of all things bright. The Asus Memo Pad 7 we reviewed was red, a nice step up from the traditional black Android tablets we usually see.

The tablet feels quite durable and you won't encounter any of the vibrations that are common on budget tablets. The tablet's design is clean and simple. On the top of the tablet you will find a headphone jack and charging via a Micro USB port. On the right is the power button and volume keys, however, strangely, the power button is located below the volume keys and this takes some getting used to.

On the left, you'll find a MicroSD card slot that supports cards up to 32GB to complement the built-in 16GB of storage. The slot doesn't have a cover, which makes you worry about dust collecting, but it's recessed enough that you don't have to worry about accidentally removing a card. On the back of the device, you will find a mono speaker at the bottom.

Of course, Asus had to make some concessions to make the tablet affordable. For example, as a screen, the tablet offers an IPS panel with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, which in no way compares to the incredible 1920 x 1200 pixels of the Google Nexus 7 display. The tablet screen has an even lower resolution than the Tesco Hudl, and low-resolution text looks not as clear as other screens. We also measured the screen contrast and found a ratio of 685:1, which is quite low even for cheap tablets. Along with contrast, the Memo Pad 7 screen suffers from a lack of brightness, 197 cd/m2.

In comparison, the Tesco Hudl, which sells at the same price point, offers a screen with a contrast ratio of 993:1 and is much brighter at 343 cd/m2. The Asus tablet takes the lead when it comes to color accuracy, on the other hand, with the device's screen displaying 87.5% of the SRGB color gamut, compared to 63.8% of the Hudl panel. And this difference is obvious when you place the two tablets side by side. The Hudl suffers from a slight yellow tint compared to the clean and bright white of the Memo Pad 7.

Screen viewing angles are quite acceptable, and switching the screen to reading mode is available from the quick menu. In this mode, the screen contrast is reduced to make reading more comfortable. We found the screen's color temperature to be warmer, which helps ease eye strain.

The Asus Memo Pad 7 runs on Adnroid 4.4 KitKat, the latest version of the OS that has been upgraded with Asus' ZenUI user interface. The interface offers several worthwhile changes to the base version of Android, including an updated lock screen that displays the weather and calendar, along with browser, camera, and mail shortcuts.

Asus also includes its own camera app, which has a few extra options over the basic camera. There's a burst mode, for example, that takes a number of shots before and after you press the shutter button, allowing you to choose the best shot.

Selfie mode allows you to first set the number of people involved in the selfie, and then the camera uses face detection to automatically take the photo, allowing you to use the excellent rear camera for a group photo, instead of the front camera that is usually used for selfies. In practice, however, we found that the feature worked fine with a single person, but we couldn't get it to detect more than one face in a row, resulting in a lot of failed shots. The camera also offers a very fun animated GIF creation mode.

The camera's image quality is fine in good lighting, but in poor lighting conditions the images suffer from noise. It's not the best camera out there, but we weren't expecting amazing quality given the Memo Pad 7's price.

The Asus Memo Pad 7 was a pleasant surprise. This is a great tablet for the price, with good performance and battery life. Just as the Google Nexus 7 redefined the capabilities of a tablet under 10,000 rubles, the Asus Memo Pad 7 changes our view of what we could expect from a tablet under 7,000 rubles. We'd recommend adding a few thousand rubles and buying the Nexus 7, but if you're looking for a competent tablet for little money, the Memo Pad 7 is a fantastic option.

Introduction

Our readers know the Asus company first-hand, largely thanks to the extensive range of motherboard models and non-reference versions of video cards.
However, the Taiwanese are not doing so well in the mobile solutions market: they have not managed to become one of the sales leaders. Several Android smartphones from this company have already been in the laboratory, for example, Asus Zenfone 5 and Padfone E. Now we will talk about the tablet, and its hardware is of some interest.

The hero of the review is based on a quad-core 64-bit Intel Atom Z3560 processor, which should seriously compete with mid-range solutions from Qualcomm and MediaTek. Moreover, thanks to Intel's subsidies, the price of such SoCs is very attractive, which should have a positive effect on the final cost of the product.

Will Asus MeMO Pad 7 be able to interest buyers with a new “filling” and an attractive price, or will it go to the dustbin of history? Let's figure it out.

*Declared support for GSM, LTE and WCDMA networks, but in practice it was not possible to use them.
This may be a pre-sale sample and/or carrier limitation. To begin with, it is worth noting that I received a test copy, so the operation of the tablet, as well as its configuration, may ultimately differ from the production samples.

The first thing that catches your eye is the quad-core 64-bit processor with x86 architecture. In the recent past, dual-core Intel Atom models in the mobile segment were not distinguished by high performance, but power consumption was just high. The advantages include support for LTE and the presence of a slot for memory cards. Otherwise, we have a very good mid-segment tablet.

Packaging and equipment

Asus MeMO Pad 7 comes in a modest, medium-sized cardboard box.

The ends of the packaging are devoid of any useful information.

On the reverse side there is not even a hint of technical characteristics.

The box design is nested. However, the display is in no way protected from damage and scratches. Most likely, this is a feature of the test sample. It should be noted that the internal cavity is not secured inside by anything, and at any opportunity it tries to move out.

Inside there is a very meager supply package. Let's list it.

  • Charger;
  • MicroUSB cable.

Fun fact: in order to insert a SIM card, you need a paperclip, but it’s not included in the kit. There is no need to talk about a stereo headset.

The charger is built well, I have no complaints about it.

⇡#Options

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - factory box

The scope of delivery of the ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 is quite modest - for a device of this price this is quite logical. In the box we found the following:

  • User manual and warranty card;
  • Charger with USB output;
  • USB ↔ microUSB cable.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - standard package

CPU performance

We tested the performance of the 4-core Cortex A9 processor of the ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 tablet using Linpack. Results are in millions of floating point operations per second (MFLOPS).

Despite the quad-core processor, the results are slightly worse even than dual-core systems, so in processor-intensive applications (office, etc.), be prepared for the fact that the work may not be ideal. Although the ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 tablet copes with ordinary applications without problems.

⇡#Display

The seven-inch tablet screen is based on an IPS matrix, thanks to which the display has large viewing angles. The information on it remains readable even when the view is deviated from the perpendicular; the characteristic drop in contrast is quite insignificant. The screen resolution is low - 1280x800 pixels, the resulting pixel density is 215 units per inch. The indicator is not bad - fonts look sharp, and movies and photographs are quite well detailed. However, this density is not enough to completely hide the grain - individual pixels are visible to the naked eye. However, it cannot be said that they hurt the eyes too much. The tablet quickly and accurately recognizes keystrokes, “understands” gestures and supports up to ten simultaneous touches.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - AnTuTu MultiTouch Test results

The screen has a decent amount of brightness. The maximum luminosity of the white field is 331 cd/m2. This partly compensates for the lack of a polarizing layer - users have a chance to see what is happening on the display in direct sunlight, despite the fact that it noticeably glares and goes blind. The minimum white backlight level is 24 cd/m2, making it also comfortable to work with the display in the dark.

The maximum black field luminosity is slightly higher than we would like - 0.52 cd/m2 (in this case, less is better). Because of this, when the brightness is turned up to maximum, blacks lack depth. However, if you remember the price of the issue, you will have to admit: the contrast of the display is not bad - 634:1, according to the results of our measurements.

The color temperature of shades of gray is slightly lower than normal - it fluctuates in the range of 5500-5800 K with a reference value of 6500 K. This means that the colors on the screen look just a little “warmer” than they should be, however, to notice this, you need a trained eye - the deviation is not such already significant.

The ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 screen is configured very well. The gamma curves of color components and grayscale levels almost completely coincide with the reference curve, allowing only minimal and completely insignificant deviations. The color rendition of the display is correct.

The color gamut of the display is slightly narrower than the sRGB space, although again it’s not critical. Overall, the ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 display turned out to be quite successful, and for a budget device you couldn’t ask for anything better. Electronic documents, web pages, movies and photographs - everything looks very, very good on the tablet screen.

The power of Atom: review of the ASUS MeMO Pad 7 (ME176CX) tablet

The editors would like to thank the KTS online store for kindly providing the tablet for review.

What is it and why is it interesting?

ASUS MeMO Pad 7 (ME176CX) is an inexpensive 7-inch Android tablet based on the Bay Trail x86 Intel Atom processor. This mobile chip gives the ASUS tablet a head start in performance over competitors from Qualcomm and MediaTek, although the RAM capacity of 1 GB can be a bottleneck. In addition, increased performance often comes at the price of shorter battery life. One way or another, we will find out during the testing process.

Does it fit comfortably in your hand?

The screen of ASUS MeMO Pad 7 is covered with tempered glass with an oleophobic coating, and the back panel is made of matte plastic without a clearly defined texture. All this makes the tablet resistant to scratches and stains. On the back panel there is a 3-megapixel camera without autofocus (image quality is unsatisfactory) and the “Intel inside” logo flaunts.

The shape of the MeMO Pad 7 body is most reminiscent of the year before last Nexus 7 (on Tegra 3): rounded corners and a shell design (the back panel and sides are a solid, relatively easily removable part). In our case, the back is painted yellow, but there are black, white, red and blue versions.

Is it pleasant to look at the screen?

The seven-inch display of ASUS MeMO Pad 7 has a resolution of 1280x800 pixels (density 216 PPI) and is made using IPS technology. Color rendition and viewing angles are good, but not outstanding; Even in this price category you can find a nicer picture. Unfortunately, there is no light sensor.

Doesn't it slow down?

The powerful Intel Atom Z3745 processor is the main distinguishing feature of the ASUS MeMO Pad 7. This chip has four physical cores, while representatives of the Intel Atom Z2000 series have only one or two cores, which are doubled virtually thanks to Hyper-Threading technology. The graphics core is no longer represented by Imagination PowerVR, but by Intel HD Graphics.

All this results in 32 thousand points in the AnTuTu benchmark - an unprecedented figure for tablets in this price category. For comparison, Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 and MediaTek MT8121/MT8125 single-chip systems with the same screen resolution score approximately 17 thousand points in AnTuTu.

The real performance of MeMO Pad 7 also corresponds to the high performance of synthetic benchmarks: the animation of the ZenUI graphic shell is smooth, the game Dead Trigger 2 and the Epic Citadel graphic benchmark work with a high frame refresh rate (the tablet heats up moderately in games). But it was no longer possible to test the racing simulator Asphalt 8: only 3 GB of space is available for installing applications, as in the case of the ASUS Transformer Pad TF103C we recently tested.

How long does the battery last?

For more accurate testing of battery life, I turned off the Wi-Fi module (I did the same in previous reviews of tablets). The ASUS MeMO Pad 7 results are as follows: at 50% screen brightness, 720p video can be viewed in MX Player for up to 10 hours. And e-books in Cool Reader at 30 percent brightness can be read for up to 14 hours. Not a bad indicator, especially considering the impressive processor power.

Who are the competitors?

ASUS MeMO Pad 7 has at least three alternatives from famous brands: Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0, Lenovo IdeaTab S5000 and LG G Pad 7.0. The seven-inch Samsung boasts 1.5 GB of RAM and pre-installed high-quality office suite Hancom Office, but has a rare Marvell PXA1088 processor, which promises incompatibility with some 3D games.

In turn, the Lenovo IdeaTab S5000 has a 5 MP camera with autofocus and an optional 3G modem. Finally, the LG G Pad 7.0 has a pleasing screen, record battery life and a built-in IR port for controlling household appliances.

Bottom line

ASUS has produced a well-balanced Android tablet, the MeMO Pad 7 (ME176CX), which is almost twice as fast as any of its competitors in synthetic tests. But with an HD screen resolution and 1 GB of RAM, the performance of the Intel Atom Bay Trail chip is excessive, and the Android operating system does not yet support 64-bit instructions.

3 reasons to buy ASUS MeMO Pad 7 (ME176CX):

  • powerful processor;
  • practical body materials;
  • trump logo "Intel inside" on the back panel ;-)

2 reasons not to buy ASUS MeMO Pad 7 (ME176CX):

  • limited memory for installing applications;
  • poor quality of both cameras.

⇡#Sound

Like other tablets from the MEMO Pad line, the gadget is equipped with . The external speaker of the device has a decent volume reserve and quite good sound detail for a mobile device. Musical compositions are reproduced with non-wheezing bass and neat high frequencies.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - AudioWizard settings

The software part of the SonicMaster technology consists of using AudioWizard filters that adjust the sound level to the content being played. They are available both when a headset is connected and when listening to audio tracks using an external speaker. AudioWizard filters can be quickly accessed from the application menu or notification panel.

Main characteristics

Before purchasing any device, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with its technical characteristics. Speaking about the Asus MeMO Pad hd 7 me173x tablet, it is worth considering the following key indicators:

  • screen - 7 inches;
  • glossy display surface;
  • resolution - 1280 x 800 pixels;
  • capacitive touch panel;
  • 4 cores;
  • Android 4.4;
  • RAM capacity - 1 GB;
  • 8 or 16 GB is available to the user for use (depending on the device modification);
  • front and main cameras, 2 and 5 megapixels, respectively;
  • battery - 3910 mAh;
  • weight - 295 g.

⇡#Hardware and performance

Of course, ASUS marketers can emphasize that they have assembled a budget quad-core tablet, but you shouldn’t expect ultra-high performance from it. The fact is that the gadget is built on a fresh chip from the Chinese company MediaTek - MT8125, which was born in the middle of the second quarter of this year. In the arsenal of this system-on-chip there are the coveted four... not very efficient ARMv7 Cortex-A7 cores operating at a frequency of 1.2 GHz. However, it could not be otherwise: more powerful mobile processors are significantly more expensive and are installed in gadgets of a different class. On the other hand, the MediaTek MT8125 is still some kind of “quad”, and it is produced using a modern 28-nm technological process.

The tablet has one gigabyte of RAM. As for the built-in storage, ASUS has equipped its budget phone surprisingly generously: usually devices in this price range make do with the bare minimum of flash memory - 4-8 “claimed” GB, which in reality means 0-4 GB available to the user. In this case, as much as 16 GB are built-in, of which about twelve are available to the user. Those who find this not enough can expand the memory using a MicroSD card.

The Linpack synthetic test revealed clear progress of the new MediaTek chip compared to the previous generation, however, it is noticeably short of “serious” processors from Samsung and Qualcomm.

The performance of the MediaTek MT8125 is quite enough to ensure smooth operation of standard software - displaying operating system animations, switching between applications and web surfing. In the Quadrant 2 Standard synthetic test, the tablet scored almost four thousand points - the result is quite decent.

The graphics controller is a single-core PowerVR SGX 544 operating at 300 MHz. The ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 is quite good for watching movies, except that the standard player should know more about different video containers. However, third-party MX Player successfully plays movies in 720p and Full HD 1080p without noticeable image twitching. Only videos with a frequency of 50 or 60 frames per second cause visible difficulties with the tablet.

Playing “heavy” 3D games on a tablet will not be easy - most applications launch, but run with slowdowns. The latest Asphalt, for example, runs well only with minimal detail, and NOVA 3 takes a very long time to load. In general, MEMO Pad HD 7 is clearly not for gamers. The device copes well with casual arcade games - all kinds of “angry birds” and “fruit ninjas” work smoothly.

Device interface

Asus MeMO Pad 7 runs on Android 4.4 system. Ease of use is ensured thanks to the proprietary shell. The interface looks quite interesting and is easy to use. Compared to previous versions, the lock screen, menu and settings panel have been significantly redesigned. The utility panel buttons can be changed according to user preferences. On a positive note, it is worth noting that all programs that you installed yourself are in a separate window. This makes working with the device much easier. As for pre-installed programs, these are mainly utilities for setting up multimedia functions, file managers and all sorts of ways to optimize the device.

⇡#Communication

The ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 has a fairly standard set of communications for an inexpensive tablet: there is no NFC chip or cellular modem in the device. Despite the absence of the latter, there is a built-in GPS module, which is not often found in budget class tablets. Of course, the gadget cannot do without Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. “Blue tooth” in MEMO Pad HD 7 is not too fast - a five-megabyte file was transferred to another device in about eight minutes. However, musical compositions were broadcast from it to wireless speakers without any slowdown - that’s already good.

The Wi-Fi module works without problems, except that the tablet connects to public access points somewhat reluctantly and periodically loses the signal. However, it is likely that we were unlucky - perhaps the networks were overloaded. On a home Wi-Fi network, the ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 worked stably, without sudden “disconnects,” and achieved a reception speed of about seven hundred kilobits per second—not great, but enough to watch streaming video in standard definition.

SpeedTest test results on a home Wi-Fi network

A GPS module with A-GPS support is responsible for navigation in the tablet. Almost two minutes later (quite a long time) after launching the profile test, the device detected ten satellites, but selected only 4-5 of them for orientation. This happened without Internet access. Of course, with an active Wi-Fi connection, navigation is faster and more accurate.

Device functionality

Speaking about the Asus MeMO Pad hd 7 screen, it is worth noting that it is equipped with an IPS matrix. The user can adjust the image brightness in the range of 10-265 cd/sq. m. It is proposed to do this exclusively manually, since there is no special sensor for automatic adjustment. The display supports up to 10 touches. This is important for those users who are fond of games. It is also worth noting that you can independently adjust the saturation and color temperature. Thus, experts rate the screen quality as average.

The Asus MeMO Pad 7 tablet, unlike its predecessors, which ran on VIA and MediaTek processors, is equipped with an Intel chip with 4 cores. The frequency can range from 1.33 to 1.86 GHz. Built-in modules such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS are responsible for wireless communication. In video viewing mode, battery life can be provided for up to 10 hours.

⇡#Autonomous work

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 has a lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 15 Wh (4050 mAh, 3.7 V). For a seven-inch tablet, this is a fairly standard capacity, but due to the small screen resolution and economical processor, you can expect quite a decent operating time on a single charge.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - AnTuTu Battery Test results

In the AnTuTu profile test, the device scored as much as 906 points, discharging with the maximum screen backlight level and an active Wi-Fi connection from 100% to 19% in five hours - a very good result. Its cause, as it turned out, was a completely effective energy saving mode that works by default. At the same time, the user can configure it even more strictly - and the battery life will increase. In other words, with moderate use, the tablet’s battery will definitely last for a day or a little more.

What's included in the package

Asus MeMO Pad 7 is available to users in two modifications, which differ in the amount of built-in memory. So, buyers can choose an 8 or 16 GB option. It is worth noting that both options are sold in the same configuration, which includes the following:

  • the gadget itself;
  • Charger;
  • USB cable;
  • user manual and other documentation.

For those who want to further protect their Asus MeMO Pad 7, several variants of branded cases are available. They can be purchased separately.

⇡#Camera

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - main camera

The tablet has two cameras: front, 1.2-megapixel and main, five-megapixel. The latter is equipped with autofocus, but there is no flash. The cameras shoot quite standardly for their tiny sensors - you can’t expect a miracle from them, but within their class they work quite normally. The front camera copes with its tasks only in sufficient lighting. In the dark, the picture is covered with a copious layer of noise - the camera is clearly not designed for poor shooting conditions.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 – viewfinder

The camera application interface differs from the standard Android one. It has a huge number of settings that are mostly unnecessary for a mediocre 5-megapixel camera. On the other hand: more is not less, there is good. One of the most useful features is the switchable High Dynamic Range mode, which, in sufficient lighting, makes the picture noticeably more balanced in color.

HDR disabled

HDR enabled

The rear camera of the tablet is equipped with four times digital zoom. Of course, you should resort to it only in cases of extreme necessity - it significantly destroys detail, the picture is covered with artifacts.

Example of shooting using digital zoom

Shooting indoors is clearly not the strong point of the ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 camera. In moderate or, especially, low lighting, the image becomes faded and overgrown with noise. However, this is quite expected.

Example of indoor shooting

The gadget can shoot video in Full HD format and stitch together panoramas, although the latter are difficult for it: the pictures contain obvious distortions in perspective, loss of detail and “seams”. Obviously, the software is accustomed to working with higher quality cameras of older ASUS devices.

Interface

The ASUS MeMO Pad 7 tablet runs on the Android 4.4 operating system with a proprietary software shell. The interface looks very interesting; the lock screen, settings panel and application window have been significantly redesigned. The composition of indicators/switches in the service panel can be changed in accordance with your own preferences.

The shell allows you to combine settings and system notifications in one window, now there is no need to aim at the left or right edge of the screen. All installed applications are collected in the corresponding section, and you can see all the software at once, only the programs you have installed or the most frequently launched software. Traditionally, ASUS tablets offer a set of pre-installed proprietary applications, including image and sound adjustment utilities, a power consumption optimization system, a file manager, and others.

Desktop

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 runs on the Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean operating system, which comes in its full version, without any abbreviations. Its interface has undergone minor cosmetic changes. ASUS designers loaded proprietary widgets into the shell, slightly changed the notification panel, and added their own keyboard. However, basically we have a completely familiar “bucket” with a standard layout of desktops and various menus.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - application menu out of the box

As is usually the case with ASUS, the tablet is packed with proprietary applications - in addition to all the standard programs for the operating system, the MEMO Pad HD 7 also includes numerous third-party ones. The device has all kinds of “readers”, and to-do planners, and file managers, and even a “mirror” that provides quick access to the front camera - in general, you see, the Play Market is not useful. It’s nice that the company’s engineers did not refuse to install proprietary software on the budget tablet.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD7 tablet review

]ASUS[/anchor] is a major player in the Android tablet market. The manufacturer has gained popularity with its “Transformer” series of tablet computers, as well as a joint project with Google – the Nexus 7 device. This time the company is introducing a budget tablet model called MeMO Pad HD7. It is aimed at the lower segment of the market and offers the highest possible performance of a gadget in this category, combined with several very useful functions. Other advantages of the new model include a reliable body and an affordable price.

Technical features of MeMO Pad HD7

To reduce the cost of the new model, ASUS significantly simplified the tablet, but this did not affect the productivity capabilities of the gadget. So, the device is equipped with a quad-core ARM Cortex A7 processor with a frequency of 1.2 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, and 8 or 16 GB of internal memory (there is a slot for microSD cards). Battery capacity – 3890 mAh. IPS screen – 7 inches with a resolution of 1280×800. There is a 1.2-megapixel camera on the front and a 5-megapixel camera on the back, which we'll look at below.

Build quality

The build quality of this device fully complies with the standards accepted for budget tablets. The design of the gadget is almost identical to the Nexus 7: the same dimensions and button placement. The only thing is that ASUS has moved the headphone jack and MicroUSB port to the top of the device, but the volume control, power button and speakers remain in the same places.

What distinguishes the MeMO Pad HD7 from the Nexus 7 is the quality of the materials used. In the new model, ASUS was focused on, as already mentioned, the lower segment of the market, so light glossy plastic was used for the back and sides. This material is not particularly aesthetically pleasing, but is pleasant to the touch. MeMO Pad HD7 comes in several color options: an all-black model, as well as 4 two-color ones - black with pink, green, blue and white. ASUS also offers a variety of color covers for this tablet.

While the back panel is securely attached to the body of the tablet, the gadget still has a slightly unfinished appearance due to the protruding edge around the entire perimeter of the device. The edges of the rim are not sharp, but they give the impression of a manufacturing oversight, due to which the rear panel protrudes from the sides by several millimeters. The front panel is reminiscent of the original design of the Nexus 7 - the same wide frame, thanks to which you can safely hold the tablet without fear of touching the screen.

At first glance, the MeMO Pad HD7 is assembled perfectly, but if you press on it, you can hear a creak. This is due to the fact that ordinary quality plastic was used, but you can still be sure that the tablet will not fall apart in your hands.

It is also worth noting that the tablet body can slip in your hands, although holding it is quite comfortable. In addition, the device is quite light - only 302 grams. The cost of the tablet - $150 - fully corresponds to its quality and capabilities. Without certain shortcomings, the company would not be able to offer such a low price.

Screen

ASUS is known for putting high-quality screens on Android tablets, but with the new model the company decided to deviate a little from this rule. Again, this is explained by the desire to reduce the cost of the gadget. Therefore, it is equipped with an IPS display with a rather modest resolution of 1280x800 (213ppi), in addition, the developers had to make other concessions.

In particular, speaking about the brightness and clarity of the image, the tablet fully matches the parameters of the Nexus 7, but when it comes to contrast and viewing angles, the situation here is a little worse. Color reproduction is inferior to the screens of other similar devices. Viewing angles are acceptable, but if you look at the screen from the side, the brightness is clearly not enough.

Most of these flaws are due to the fact that the tablet's display is not "laminated" (in other words, there is a certain amount of space between the screen itself and the glass that covers it). “Laminated” displays have become the norm these days, which is why it’s so easy to notice when a gadget is equipped with a different type of screen.

However, it is worth recognizing that the HD7 tablet's display is much better than one might expect. Even those shortcomings that were discovered do not in any way affect the performance of the device itself. By and large, for such a low cost tablet, a display of this quality is a real find.

Speakers

ASUS says the MeMO Pad HD7 has stereo speakers, but turning the device over reveals that, like the Nexus 7 and HD7, there's only one speaker on the back. When playing games or just listening to music, you can enjoy excellent sound, but there is no question of any “stereo” sound. If you want to get high-quality sound, it is better to use headphones.

Connectivity

MeMO Pad HD7 supports Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS. It also has a standard set of sensors. The only thing missing here is NFC and an ambient light sensor, which means there's no automatic brightness adjustment option.

Battery life

Under the glossy body of the HD7 lies a non-removable lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 3890 mAh. Despite the fact that the tablet is considered a budget tablet, the processor consumes little energy and during testing the device demonstrated a fairly long operating life. Like most tablets, the HD7 can last several days in standby mode. The screen is the most energy-consuming, especially at high brightness. ASUS claims that the MeMO Pad HD7 can last up to 10 hours (with continuous use), which was confirmed during our test of the device.

Software and interface

As for programs, ASUS used the experience of its previous models, equipping the new tablet with the Android 4.2.1 operating system.

If you have ever used a 7-inch tablet based on Android 4.2, then you will get used to the interface of the new model in no time. The changes are mainly cosmetic: instead of a dark theme, it became lighter, the folder design changed, and the status bar became transparent.

ASUS has changed how the home screen button works. Now it is used to quickly launch applications, as well as access to settings and some built-in applications that are responsible for the tablet's performance. Another control panel has been added, which is called up by clicking the button in the lower left corner. It provides quick access to more applications. We found these two innovations to be useless, since you will rarely need to use them.

In any case, you will be able to disable ASUS tweaks in the notification panel. The default settings can be changed in the “ASUS Custom Settings” section, most importantly, do not forget to uncheck the “Use ASUS Quick Settings” option. This will allow you to return to standard Jelly Bean notifications. Of course, ASUS should give users access to a wider range of settings.

Performance and practicality

With a quad-core Cortex A7 processor and 1 GB of RAM, you cannot count on high speed and smooth operation of the gadget. So, loading applications will take a few seconds longer, and the scrolling speed will be slow. It's clear that, despite the compromises that ASUS had to make to keep the tablet's price down, the HD7's performance is quite high considering the limited resources it has to work with.

MeMO Pad HD7 Cameras

Although ASUS made the tablet budget, it still retained the 5-megapixel camera on the rear panel in the HD7. In addition, the camera interface and software offer a fairly wide range of options.

For example, you can use different camera modes - HDR, panoramic, night, portrait and landscape photography. Various artistic filters are also available. In manual mode, you can quickly adjust exposure, determine white balance, ISO (50-800), timer, burst mode and several focus modes up to face detection, as well as display grid lines. The camera interface makes it easy to access or hide settings during the shooting process. The design flaws are fully compensated by the functionality of the camera.

There's also a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera that's ideal for video calling. However, its quality leaves much to be desired.

MeMO Pad HD7 records video in 1080p (default). The overall impression of the shooting is good: color rendition is at a decent level, in addition, the camera determines the most successful ratio of the lightest and darkest parts of the image. However, if you quickly move the tablet while shooting, the image will jump. Again, if you have a steady hand, the HD7's video quality will be excellent.

Conclusion

The MeMO Pad HD7 test results are truly impressive. It's amazing how many features ASUS managed to pack into a 7-inch tablet that costs just $149. Apart from some minor build quality issues, the HD7 has no major flaws. You get a great display and optimal performance at a super affordable price.

At the same time, by paying a small amount, you can purchase another 7-inch device with more advanced capabilities. A striking example is the new Nexus 7 2. But if the low price is important to you, then the ASUS MeMO Pad HD7 is the best option to buy.

Hardware filling

Specifications of ASUS MeMO Pad 8 are as follows:

  • Processor: Quad-core Intel Atom 1.33 GHz
  • RAM: 1 GB DDR3
  • Memory: 16 GB
  • Display: IPS, 8 inches with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels
  • Communication: Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi n, GPS, GLONASS
  • Sensors: accelerometer
  • Cameras: 2 MP front and 5 MP rear
  • Operating system: Android 4.4.2
  • Battery: 15.2 Wh, 9 hours of operation
  • Dimensions: 211×124×7.6 mm
  • Weight: 318 grams

In general, the characteristics cannot be called top-end, but the price of the tablet is by no means high.

Let us remind you that in our case the model we are testing is ME181C, but there is also the ME180A model. The difference between them is the processor (the latter has an AMD E-series with a frequency of 1.6 GHz) and the front camera (the ME180A has a 1.2 MP front camera). There is a difference in price, but more on that at the end.

At the same time, our copy did not slow down at all and we didn’t even think about the characteristics. Why think about them when everything works?

In AnTuTu, ASUS MeMO Pad 8 scores about 36,500 points, which is quite decent.

There are also no problems with Wi-Fi. At a distance of one meter from the router:

At a distance of 3 meters through a concrete wall:

At a distance of 45 meters through three concrete walls:

So Wi-Fi will work well in classrooms, no matter how far away the university router is. But it’s still better to choose places closer to open doors.

Everything is fine with GPS and GLONASS too. We conducted the test in very cloudy weather, it was raining, but we managed to find 10 satellites, connecting to 8 of them:

In all other respects - sound, display, Bluetooth, accelometer - there are no complaints. Everything works perfectly, which is even a little surprising when you think about the price.

Summing up the Asus MeMo Pad 7 tablet

According to the manufacturer, the battery provides the tablet with 9 hours of battery life. If the device is not heavily loaded, it can last a couple of days. We should also not forget about the possibility of installing a microSD memory card. It will allow the buyer to download a large amount of music and movies to the tablet computer.

If you are looking for the first tablet in your life, then you can take a look at the Asus MeMo Pad 7. It is inexpensive, its appearance is not at all annoying, and the installed components will allow you to play movies in the highest resolution. The device is definitely worth the money. You will only have to put up with the not-so-high display resolution.

Asus MeMo Pad 7 Tablet Software

As you might guess, the tablet computer runs on the Android operating system. However, the proprietary Asus ZenUI shell is installed on top of it. This cannot be called an advantage of the device.

The shell is very heavy, not every novice user will understand it right away. And we can say that budget devices are least suitable for such shells. The fact is that the tablet does not have the best components, which is why in the future there may be all sorts of slowdowns during navigation. It would be better if Asus installed pure Android on their cheapest tablets. But the company does not want to liken itself to Chinese manufacturers.

Equipment and appearance

MeMO Pad 8 comes in a small cardboard box, inside of which there is only the essentials: the tablet itself, a USB-MicroUSB cable for charging and synchronization, as well as a power adapter rated for 100-240 Volts, so for charging you only need an adapter to a European plug .

There are also a bunch of books inside describing how to get started, but who reads them?

The tablet itself is tall and narrow, making it easy to hold in one hand. Plus, it's lightweight, so you won't feel any heaviness. Hold a tablet in one hand and write notes with the other? As easy as pie!

On the front of the ASUS MeMO Pad there is a 2 MP camera and the manufacturer’s logo. The frames at the top and bottom are relatively high, but this does not interfere and even helps when holding the tablet in landscape orientation. At least they are smaller than those of the same Nexus 7. But the side frames are 7 mm thick each. And this is neither good nor bad. Given the overall size of the tablet, they do not look “too much”; they are quite standard. For the same Nexus 7 they are 11 mm, although the tablet itself is smaller. In general, there are no problems at the front, everything is very good.

On the top edge there is a 3.5 mm mini-jack, a USB connector for charging and synchronization, and a microphone. On the right edge there is a power/lock button and a volume rocker. They are located at an angle, which is generally convenient. No matter how you use the tablet - in your hands, on a soft or hard surface - it will not be easy to accidentally press buttons.

On the left edge there is only a slot for MicroSD cards, and it is open and dust will most likely get clogged there. The only way out is to close the slot by inserting a card purchased separately. In this case, less dust will get inside. ASUS has only one excuse - it needs to save on something.

The bottom edge is deprived of any buttons or connectors.

The back of MeMO Pad 8 is made of corrugated matte plastic, very pleasant to the touch. It is always a little cool, but not cold like the aluminum on the same iPad.

In the upper left part there is a 5 MP camera eye, a little lower in the center there is a metallic ASUS logo, and at the very bottom there are stereo speakers.

It’s nice that the plastic is not pressed anywhere, there are no squeaks under any compression or twisting force. The assembly is simply excellent, competitors can equal it.

Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 ME581CL tablet: Review

Materials and design - 3.0

The Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 (ME581 CL) tablet looks typical for a tablet, at least from the front: a glossy panel with fairly wide frames, rounded edges, a camera eye - nothing new. In our opinion, the decision to place the corporate logo at the bottom of the tablet looks strange, although this is typical for the company. As a rule, logos are placed on top, so sometimes out of habit you want to pick it up with the logo facing up.

The back of the tablet seems unusual - in our case it is blue and glossy, even flashy blue. In addition to blue, there are white and pink to choose from, which makes it more of a tablet for the fair sex. By the way, the glossy back glares a lot and “collects” fingerprints. The manufacturer talks about multi-layer finishing of the case, but it is not clear how this is expressed, the tablet does not become stronger, or prettier either.

The pair of stereo speakers at the top and bottom also attract attention; they sound loud, but when used in landscape mode, you can accidentally muffle the sound with your hands, and it will also move away from you. Separately, I would like to note the memory card slot; it is not covered with anything; dust, dirt or liquid can get into it and become clogged.

Key presses are not recorded very clearly. There are no physical or separate touch buttons under the display, they are located only at the bottom of the display - on the one hand, they take up part of the display, on the other hand, in games they will not interfere with you and be accidentally pressed.

The plastic case of the Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 is generally assembled normally, the parts fit tightly, it seems durable, and there should be no problems with it during normal use. However, if you put special pressure on it, you can see that the body bends slightly along the length of the tablet. By and large, this is not surprising for a device with a large display, so we recommend that you do not sit on it and specifically test it for durability.

The tablet can be purchased in white, pink and blue colors. Among other things, the tablet is offered with branded accessories, for example, the Versa Sleeve 8 case.

Dimensions and weight - 5.0

The Asus MeMo Pad 8 (ME581CL) tablet can be called light and quite thin. Its weight is only 297 grams, slightly heavier than the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 (297 grams), but noticeably lighter than the Apple iPad mini 3 (342 grams). The thickness of the case reaches 8 mm - thin, but thicker than the crowned expensive competitors; all expensive 7-8 inch tablets turned out to be at least a little thinner. With a diagonal of 8 inches, the Asus MeMo Pad can be held in one hand, it will “fit” into a large palm, but holding it for a long time is inconvenient.

Ports and interfaces - 4.8

On the right side of the Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 there are control keys, and at the bottom there is a slot for a micro-SIM card, at the top there is an audio jack, and on the left there is an uncovered slot for a memory card. An interesting thing is hidden at the bottom - a Micro-USB 2.0 connector, not a simple one, but like the flagships, with OTG support for connecting peripherals and SlimPort support instead of MHL technology - with the help of adapters you can connect not only to the HDMI connector, but also to VGA, Display Port, etc. In terms of wireless interfaces, the tablet is also not inferior to more expensive competitors - there is an NFC chip, dual-band Wi-Fi, support for the high-speed 802.11 ac standard, GPS/GLONASS navigation, built-in LTE modem (Cat 4, up to 150 Mbit/ sec), works in the ranges 3.7 and 20 (800, 1800 and 2600). In general, according to this criterion, the tablet can be called “top-end”.

Performance - 3.9

The Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 (ME581CL) tablet is equipped with a quad-core, energy-efficient Intel Atom Z3560 processor, with operating frequencies up to 1.83 GHz. PowerVR G6430 is used as a graphics accelerator (by the way, the same one is inside the iPad mini 2, 3 and the first iPad Air). Of the 16 GB of internal memory, about 10 GB is available to the user; there should also be a version with 32 GB of memory on sale, but we could not find and buy it for the test. The network is actively discussing the presence of a tablet modification with a more powerful Z3580, but on the official Asus website, only the Intel Z3560 is listed in the technical data of the Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 ME581CL. Based on the test results, we can say that the hardware is productive, powerful, and sufficient for all tasks assigned to tablets; according to this criterion, the tablet is on par with Android flagships of 2014, for example, Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 or Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact . The Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 performed well in performance benchmarks, but sometimes lagged in the most demanding games at maximum settings.

Chipset:Intel Atom Z3560
Number of cores and frequency:four cores, 1.83 GHz
RAM:2 GB
Built-in memory capacity:16/32 GB
GPU:PowerVR G6430

In synthetic tests, the Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 (ME581CL) showed results at the level of premium tablets. Our tests, each of which was carried out several times, show average values over five iterations. In the Geekbench 3 benchmark, the tablet has good results - 2392 points in Multi-Core tests, lower than the Apple iPad mini with Retina with its 2514 points. In the SunSpider benchmark - about 600 milliseconds, this is enough for “fast” browsing and is faster than the results of the Sony XPeria Z3 Tablet Compact (875 milliseconds), but slower than its famous competitors Apple iPad mini 3 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4. But the Asus tablet “recouped” in graphics tests - 27 fps in the T-Rex HD Onscreen C24Z16 test from the GFXBenchmark benchmark (14 fps in the previously mentioned Samsung), significantly inferior only to the Apple iPad Air 2.

With daily use, the Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 can slow down: for example, if you open several windows at once in multitasking mode or play demanding games at the highest graphics settings. In our tests, the games Asphalt 8 and Real Racing 3 periodically crashed during tests, giving an error, and NOVA 3, although it ran smoothly, took a long time to load - about 40 seconds during loading and during transitions between scenes.

Display - 4.6

The Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 (ME 581CL) tablet was able to please with a high-quality eight-inch display - it uses an IPS matrix with Full HD resolution (1920x1200) with a fairly clear image - 283 pixels per inch. However, if you bring the screen closer to your face, you will be able to see individual pixels, but holding the screen so close to your eyes is harmful to your vision! In terms of pixel density, the display is slightly ahead of the Apple iPad Air 2, however, only because it has a 1.7-inch larger display. The tablet’s display is protected from scratches by Gorilla Glass 3, and from oily fingers by an oleophobic coating, which the brand lacks on the back of the tablet.

In our tests, the screen showed good results by the standards of a 7-8-inch tablet. The display supports multi-touch, up to 10 touches at a time; we did not find any problems with touch input - everything works clearly and accurately. The result for the maximum measured brightness is 415 cd/m2, above average. The contrast turned out to be quite good - 723:1, not a record, but good enough for black and white colors to look natural. But the brightness distribution turned out to be unexpectedly high - 96%, the display backlight is almost uniform. As you can see in the infographic, the viewing angles of the Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 display are wide, and the dimming at deviations is minimal, although they are inferior to OLED displays. As for color rendition, the colors look saturated, although the color gamut is not ideal and goes into “cool” colors and does not reach the sRGB standard in all directions.

It is interesting to note that the display does not have a glove mode, but it supports working with pencils. By the way, wearing leather gloves we were still able to unlock the display, barely scroll through a couple of pages on the desktop and even launch the camera, but we won’t be able to actually work while wearing gloves. For those who like settings, the Asus MeMo Pad has the proprietary Asus Splendid application for adjusting the color rendering to your taste - warmer, cooler or more saturated.

Battery - 3.3

The Asus MeMo Pad 8 (ME581CL) battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh turned out to be the weak point of this “almost flagship”; if not for the low results in battery life tests, the tablet would have broken into the number of leaders in our rating. So, under load, in heavy games at maximum display brightness, the battery percentage dropped before our eyes - the tablet was discharged in an average of 2 hours 54 minutes, the result is at the level of the Dell Venue 7. By the way, almost any flagship from a competitor lasts one or two hours longer. If you set the brightness lower, you can add about another hour to this, but no more. Asus MeMo Pad 8 (ME581CL) lasted 9 hours 12 minutes in video playback mode, which would seem good, but the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact can last 12 and a half hours, and the iPad mini 2 can last up to ten. With a “minimum” load or with the display turned on at minimum brightness – 14 hours 37 minutes, again an “outsider” among tablets. The kit unexpectedly included a charger not of 2A, but of 1.35 A; with such a charger, the tablet was charged in just over three hours.

Software

The Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 (ME581CL) tablet runs on the Android 4.4.2 operating system and with the proprietary ZenUI interface, which is not inferior to other proprietary interfaces: many icons of standard applications, and the applications themselves are redrawn, it has its own convenient keyboard, reading mode in the browser , 20 different items in the quick settings center and much more. Judging by the fact that the Asus Memo Pad FHD 10 has not received any major updates over the past year, there is no hope for a quick update to the MeMo Pad FHD 8 to Android 5.0 Lollipop. A large amount of different software is preinstalled on the tablet: there is an office, a file manager, an application for setting up the display, a setup wizard, various software for synchronization, notes, book stores, applications, in general, they filled up a lot of memory with a bunch of unnecessary things. For those who find the interface complex, you can choose a simplified page layout with basic settings, similar to the “simple” mode, as on some Samsung devices.

Among the interesting things to note are a couple of modes: reading - you can adjust the image mode, as well as multitasking - you can open two applications on the display (a limited set of applications is supported). In our opinion, the trend is ambiguous, on the one hand, functionality is growing, on the other, the interface inevitably becomes heavier, the abundance of settings begins to tire, and a large amount of pre-installed software only wastes space.

Cameras - 3.5

Formally, the cameras of the Asus MeMo Pad FHD 8 are slightly below the resolutions of premium devices. The tablet has “standard” cameras: a 5 MP main camera and a 1.2 MP front camera. More expensive tablets have long been equipped with 8 and 2 MP cameras, respectively, but resolution isn’t everything, is it? As is already common among tablets, there is no LED flash, but there is autofocus. The maximum resolution of 2560×1920 can only be set with a 4:3 frame format, otherwise only 4 megapixel frames will be shot. The main camera shoots Full HD video, the front camera shoots HD video, which is usually enough for video calls.

The camera interface is generally simple and clear, but with a bunch of settings and modes: HDR, the ability to raise ISO to 800, etc. The level of detail in the frames is not bad for 5 MP, but the camera gives the photos a slight bluish tint. Normal, saturated photographs can only be obtained with good, uniform lighting, while any “extra” ray of light completely illuminates the entire picture. In addition, in tests, we noticed that autofocus cannot always focus properly right away; a clear frame was not obtained the first time, so we recommend that you do several additional takes.

Appearance of the Asus MeMo Pad 7 tablet

Just last year, budget seven-inch tablets from Asus looked like toys. There was no desire to use them, the plastic used was so repulsive. There were also problems with build quality. But over the year, technology has made a certain leap. Now it is becoming increasingly difficult to make a tablet computer bad.

The body, as mentioned above, was made of plastic. But this time, not glossy, but matte plastic was used. At least for the back cover. As a result, the device does not slip in your hands and it is almost impossible to drop it. There are no unnecessary inscriptions or logos on the back panel.

The front panel no longer evokes such a joyful impression. There is too much space on the sides of the screen. Nowadays, the thickness of frames is greatly reduced, but this trend is not observed here. However, this did not greatly affect the size of the device. A person with large hands can easily fit the Asus MeMo Pad 7 in their palm.

All ends here have a silver finish. It seems that it is made of metal. But in reality this is not the case, otherwise the tablet would constantly lose the GPS signal. The device weighs only 295 grams. This is almost a record among all seven-inch tablets. After some metal models, the Asus MeMo Pad 7 feels like feathers in your hands. The thickness of the device is not minimal - 9.9 mm. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S and iPad Air, the tablet seems plump. But it’s not worth comparing it with devices whose price is three times higher.
