The gadget was equipped with a top-end processor, a cool camera, a large screen and a sophisticated DAC. The price depressed fans of Meiza’s products - 35,000 rubles for the weakest configuration, but today it can be bought for 18 thousand rubles.

Design and ergonomics

In terms of design, there weren't very many changes. The case is all-metal with plastic inserts made to imitate metal. The fingerprint scanner is traditionally hidden inside the proprietary mTouch 2.1 button. The response speed increased to 0.5 seconds, and for its time this indicator was considered the best on the market.

The front panel of the device is covered with protective glass made using 2.5D technology with sloping edges. The case is not easily soiled and collects a minimal amount of stains and fingerprints, which are easy to remove.

The dimensions of the gadget have increased significantly compared to the company’s latest models – 156.7*78*7.55 mm. The enormous length of the device catches your eye. There are questions about convenience. You can't control it with one hand. The metal base makes the case slippery and can easily fall out of your hands. The weight of the phone is 168 grams. The assembly is of high quality, as befits a flagship. No extraneous creaks or backlashes were noticed.

On the back panel there is a lens with an LED flash and the Meizu logo. The bottom end is occupied by a USB Type-C connector, a conversational microphone and an external speaker. The 3.5mm headphone jack has moved to the top of the device.

The left side edge is occupied by a hybrid tray with support for two Nano-format SIM cards, or one SIM card combined with a MicroSD drive. On the right are the lock button and the volume rocker.

At the top of the screen there are light sensors, proximity sensors, a front camera lens and a notification indicator. Below, alone, is the touch-mechanical button mTouch 2.1.

Appearance

The design of Meizu PRO 5 is similar to the company's previous models. The same monolithic metal body and plastic inserts on top and bottom.

The front side of the device is completely covered with protective glass Gorilla Glass 3 with a 2.5D effect. The speaker and front camera lens are barely visible above the screen, and the only physical control key is completely invisible below. It's worth noting that the only home key has a built-in fingerprint sensor, which works just fine.

On the back side, on a panel rounded at the ends towards the screen, in the center there is a large lens of the main camera, framed by a metal frame. It sticks out a little, but due to the sapphire crystal coating it is more scratch resistant. Just below there is an LED flash and the Meizu logo.

The power on/off key is located on the right side, easy to reach with the thumb of your right hand.

At the top end there is a 3.5mm audio output for a headset and a microphone; At the bottom there is the main speaker, microphone and microUSB connector.

Display

When developing the display, Samsung technologies were used and a SuperAMOLED matrix was used. Pixel density – 387 ppi. Screen resolution – 1920*1080, diagonal – 5.7 inches. The 2.5D protective glass has an oleophobic coating and accumulated fingerprints are easily erased from the screen.

The display performs well from various viewing angles: the picture is practically not distorted, the image remains visible, and color shades slightly turn green. MultiTouch Tester showed ten simultaneous touches. You can adjust the color temperature, double-tap wake-up and extensive gesture customization using the SmartTouch function.

Performance

Pro 5 became one of the few smartphones that was bypassed by the MediaTek chipset. A processor from Samsung is installed here - Exynox 7420, running on two clusters of 4 cores. The clock frequency of the cores of the first cluster is 2.1 GHz, the second is 1.5 GHz. The Mali-T760 MP8 video chip is responsible for the graphics component.

In the year of release, the gadget ran all modern games at maximum settings, and now the picture has not changed much: PUBG runs smoothly at medium, Asphalt Extreme runs at maximum settings.

In the Antutu benchmark, the device scores 85 thousand points and this is the third highest among all smartphones released before 2020. At that time, only the iPhone 6S Plus and Huawei Mate 8 were cooler than the hero of the review. Geekbench Score in single-core mode was 1523, in multi-core mode – 4922.

Of course, there can be no problems with the user interface. Everything works smoothly and nothing freezes. The amount of RAM depends on the configuration of the gadget: 3 or 4 gigabytes with built-in memory of 32/64 GB, respectively. The 4/64GB version is considered preferable, since 32 GB in modern realities is no longer enough for an advanced user. Due to the amount of RAM, applications are not unloaded from memory and, after deployment, return to their last state.

The update in the line is more of an evolution, working on bugs and improving what, in Meizu's opinion, needed to be improved or brought into line with common sense. The company itself positions its new device, if not perfect, then certainly striving for perfection and very close to this state. Thus, by reducing the resolution, the load on the system will be less and the battery life will be longer. But it is also better for many, so this tactical retreat can turn out to be a victory.

Let's start in order. We get a more recent version of the operating system and proprietary shell, an updated processor, a larger display, the use of USB Type-C, support for memory cards and two SIM cards. In addition, they tightened up the camera, worked on the sound quality and reduced the thickness of the device’s body. Of course, all this is accompanied by a huge variety of improved and new technologies.

At the same time, the screen resolution has become lower (which, as a plus, will definitely benefit performance and power consumption), the battery capacity is now slightly smaller, and the weight of the smartphone has increased slightly. If you look at the parameters of the Pro 5 as a whole, then we can say with confidence that this is a well-balanced, very functional and one of the most charged flagships at the moment. The only thing missing here is protection from water and dust. At the same time, the price tag of the new product, although high, is still not prohibitive.

All that remains is to check the level of quality of the new flagship, and whether all this variety of powerful technological hardware can work well and harmoniously.

Packaging and equipment Meizu Pro 5

The device arrived for testing in a flat, hard black box. Its surface is very laconic, there is only the name of the smartphone on a soft-touch coating.

Basic information about the device is pasted on the reverse surface of the package and a small Meizu icon is visible.

The device lies immediately under the lid of the box in a recess. The packaging is not in the form of a book, as you might expect. But everything without a doubt looks very premium.

Main camera

The rear camera has a six-lens Sony IMX 230 module with an f/2.2 aperture and a resolution of 21 megapixels. Optical stabilization is not available, phase detection autofocus works, and the flash is two-tone (cold and warm glow). There is a manual mode with adjustable ISO, focus, exposure and shutter speed.

The only thing I can complain about in the photographs is the lack of detail. Otherwise, the pictures come out perfect, with correct white balance and a wide viewing angle. Autofocus is fast, and the flash allows you to take good photos in low light conditions.

The video is recorded in 4K resolution using the H265 codec, which is not supported on YouTube. When shooting, autofocus tends to jump from object to object. The second disadvantage is the small viewing angle.

Front-camera

There are not enough stars in the sky from the front. This is a five-megapixel module from OmniVision (OV5670) with an f/2.0 aperture. There is no on-screen flash.

There is no point in taking a selfie in poor lighting conditions. During the day, the photos turn out quite good, but there is a noticeable lack of color saturation; the white balance shifts to gray tones.

The resolution of videos shot on the front camera is 1920*1080. But this is not enough for a high-quality picture. The resulting videos are, at best, suitable for running a personal blog on Instagram.

Software shell

The gadget runs on the Android platform version 5. Out of the box comes the Flyme 4.0 shell, which can be easily updated to version 5.0. Google services require separate installation, the process is straightforward.

The proprietary Flame shell did not leave any traces of a pure fifth Android. New fonts, icons, animations have been installed. The firmware has become simpler and more understandable for the user.

Sound quality
