Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) - smartphone review

Key Features of Samsung Galaxy J3

It is quite logical that you should not expect anything extremely surprising and amazing from the economy class Samsung phones. The smartphone is significantly inferior not only to the simplest representative of the updated A-line of the same manufacturer, but even to its own slightly older colleagues in the niche. However, you shouldn’t write him off so quickly. Indeed, for budget phones, the Samsung Galaxy J3 2020 shows quite good results.

Frame

Of course, it’s unlikely that any budget model will be able to boast a body made of even simple 2.5D glass. Galaxy J3 2020 is no exception. In general, its design is not original or particularly “styled” - the phone looks quite simple, but it is not that cheap. The body of the updated smartphone, like its previous version, is made of plastic. The back panel of the gadget imitates a matte metal finish in one of three available colors: standard white, universal black, and gold, which has been very popular in recent years. The side part is made in the form of a metal edging, which may mislead you a little and make you think that the case actually has aluminum inserts. Unfortunately, it is not.

The design of the Samsung Galaxy J3 2020 is not much different from most models of the South Korean developer

The screen takes up most of the front panel. Below it there is a mechanical “Home” button, as well as touch “Context menu” and “Back”. By the way, on the J7, the sensors, unlike most modern Samsung models, are visible all the time, and not just when backlit. At the moment, this is already a rarity and the company hides similar controls in later representatives of the market. Above the screen there is a front camera, a speaker, a proximity sensor and the Samsung logo. As you may have noticed, there is no flash on the front camera.

The phone's dimensions are 142 x 71 mm, its thickness is 7.8 mm. Weight - 138 g.

Screen

The smartphone cannot boast of a large screen diagonal. Here it is only 5 inches. In addition, there is a small black frame around the entire perimeter of the working display that cannot be removed. However, this is quite enough for any work with the phone, and due to its small dimensions, the device is comfortable to hold in your hand. The display resolution is 1280 x 720 pixels, which is standard for budget and mid-range phones. Of course, the image on the Samsung Galaxy J3 cannot be compared with the same Galaxy S7. The cheapness of the gadget will be visible in somewhat square silhouettes, not the clearest edges of the image or pixels that you can see even with the naked eye. True, with special diligence.

In tests, the smartphone does not show the best results. Even among representatives of its own niche, it is often inferior to its colleagues in brightness and the number of colors it can reflect. But this is not as critical as it might seem. Especially when you consider that the phone is from the most budget line of smartphones from Samsung, and is also not its oldest model.

At the same time, the updated Galaxy J3 now has a Super AMOLED display, which means that, despite poor technical knowledge, the picture on the Galaxy J3 screen promises to be quite high-quality. This is immediately evident in the color accuracy score, where the Delta E error is only 2.7, with an average of 3.2.

Photo gallery: smartphone testing results

One of the obvious distinguishing features of the phone is its impressive Super-AMOLED display. The color temperature of the display is somewhat high, but this is quite typical for all models from the South Korean developer. The phone has high brightness, which allows you to work comfortably with it not only indoors, but also outdoors. Among other things, the phone has a fairly wide viewing angle. Unfortunately, the Samsung Galaxy J3 2020 does not have Auto-brightness, but the level of “illumination” of the display can be adjusted manually without any problems

Tech stuff

The processors of the Samsung Galaxy J3 2020 also do not have any special characteristics. It has a quad-core Spreadtrum SC9830 chipset with a clock frequency of 1.5 GHz and a Mali-400 MP4 graphics processor. The smartphone performs standard and simple tasks quickly, without delays, reboots, various bugs, etc. However, as soon as you turn to the South Korean brainchild with a slightly more resource-intensive request, the phone begins to experience noticeable difficulties. Unfortunately, this smartphone is not intended for complex work or “heavy” games.

In terms of software, the Galaxy J3 boasts Android Lollipop version 5.1.1 and Samsung's famous TouchWiz shell, which makes it easier to work with the interface of your device, and also gives it some playfulness and personality.

The phone does not show the best results among models in its price niche

Both the worker and the graphics processor are significantly inferior to other representatives of the budget niche

Test results show that the technical component here is very weak

Overall, you shouldn’t expect more from a budget phone

In some tests, the Galaxy J3 shows lower results than its younger counterparts, for example, the Samsung Galaxy J1

More or less simple games will load here, but it’s better not to count on anything serious

Connection

Fortunately, even in the budget version, the South Korean manufacturer has kindly included slots not for one SIM card, but for two. And at the same time, he left the opportunity to additionally install a very necessary flash drive here. Another little joy for any user is that to insert a SIM or flash card, you don’t have to remove any separate slots and then go through the trouble of placing tiny elements in them with surgical precision. Simply remove the back panel cover and insert the desired card into the desired slot.

Memory

Phone owners will still need additional space. The gadget has only 1.5 GB of RAM, which, however, is quite enough. But the number of built-in gigabytes for 2020 is simply ridiculous - there are only 8 GB. And a little more than half will be free, or rather, 4.3 GB. The rest of the space will be occupied by various system files necessary for the correct operation of the device. Fortunately, the updated model can accommodate a flash drive with a capacity of up to 128 GB. Agree, this significantly improves the situation.

Battery

The battery in the Galaxy J3 2020 is far from the strongest, only 2600 mAh. Of course, there is no point in comparing it with leading flagships equipped with 3000-3600 mAh batteries. But the available charge here is sufficient for a full day of work. And with minimal use of the phone, recharging can be delayed by 2-3 days. The active Internet surfing time reaches 9-11 hours, you can talk for up to 13 hours without a break, watch videos for up to 11 hours, and listen to music for up to 53 hours. For an economy class model, these figures are really good.

The developers compensated for the lack of accelerated and wireless charging with the presence of an extreme power saving mode. This is a convenient and useful feature that will extend the operating time of your device.

You will not be able to charge your phone quickly in 1-1.5 hours. You can also recharge your battery wirelessly. However, the big advantage of this phone is the ability to put it into maximum energy saving mode. When this mode is activated in the Galaxy J3, almost all functions except the most necessary ones are disabled. Your device itself begins to limit various background processes, reduces CPU performance and display frame rates, switches to a gray color scheme, and takes other emergency measures. Getting rid of unnecessary resource-consuming tasks significantly saves the remaining amount of charge and allows you to stay connected longer. It is also important to note that “emergency” functions and applications, which are available even in maximum energy saving mode, can be configured independently.

Other amenities

LTE

To the great joy of many active Internet users, the phone supports the modern communication standard LTE Cat.4. Of course, this is not the fastest option available, but its presence alone raises the smartphone several notches in the top budget smartphones.

Smart Manager

The standard set of applications pre-installed on the Samsung Galaxy J3 2020 includes an extremely useful assistant called Smart Manager. It allows its owner to easily and naturally monitor the main processes occurring in the smartphone. For example, monitor the charge level, available memory, RAM load, and device security.

Smart Manager greatly simplifies the process of monitoring your phone's operation. You can easily configure your phone's security settings, its memory usage, etc. Smart Manager is a definite plus of the device

USB OTG

It's a little surprising that the phone supports USB On-the-Go. For those who are not in the know, let me explain. USB OTG is a simple telephone adapter. However, its uniqueness is that on one side there is a micro-USB connector, and on the other an external port that allows you to connect any other gadget to your smartphone, be it a printer, e-reader, flash drive, camera or something else. By the way, not every phone has this capability, even among middle-class models.

Review of Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) SM-J320F/DS

Good day, we continue to talk about smartphones!

Today we’ll talk about the Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) SM-J320F/DS, this is the younger brother of the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016), a review of which was recently published on our website. The hero of today's review is certainly inferior to his older brother, but perhaps he will satisfy a potential buyer with his capabilities. You will learn about its capabilities in our review; as always, everything is objective and positive. Let's start with the technical characteristics:

  • Model: Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) SM-J320F/DS;
  • Case materials: Plastic;
  • Operating system: Android 5.1 (Touch Wiz);
  • Screen: 5″ Super AMOLED, 1280×720, 294 PPI;
  • Cameras: 8 MP + 5 MP (maximum HD video);
  • CPU (processor): Spreadtrum SC9830, 4 cores up to 1.5 GHz;
  • Video processor: Mali-400;
  • RAM (random access memory): 1.5 GB;

  • Real battery test: 11 hours, 36 minutes of video at maximum brightness;
  • Dimensions, weight: 142.3 x 71 x 7.9 mm, 138 grams;
  • Features: Extreme energy saving mode;

Appearance and kit.

As you can see, even such famous brands as Samsung did not want to please their consumers from the lower price segment even with headphones. The kit is very simple: smartphone, microUSB cable, charger. More may not be needed. Happiness is in the little things, as they say.

This is what the Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) looks like. Recognizable, isn't it? The fact that you have a Samsung in your hands will be visible from afar, you get individuality for little money, which is great.

By the way, the cover of the Galaxy J3 is removable, which is quite a rarity today. This cover is made of durable plastic that slides in the palms, but not much. Under the cover there is a removable 2600 mAh battery and two slots. One for a microSD memory card (up to 128 GB), the second for two microSIM cards.

On the front panel there is a Home button and touch buttons “Back” and a list of applications. Samsung, as you know, has taken the path of abandoning these buttons, so if you buy this device, you may be the last owner of a Samsung smartphone with their proprietary physical buttons. Buttons are not backlit.

At the bottom there is a microUSB connector and a microphone.

The volume button is located on the left, and the power button on the right.

The camera was equipped with a flash, and on the opposite side of it was not a laser autofocus, but a speaker. By the way, it sounds very high quality, simply gorgeous, loud and clear.

Screen.

The screen is amazing for a budget smartphone. I especially like the fact that it is made using Super AMOLED technology. Watching movies is very comfortable, black color is reproduced very well. The screen resolution is HD, but it’s difficult to see the pixels, especially if you set the brightness to maximum and look at the screen at an angle, then you definitely won’t see anything. The color temperature of the screen can be adjusted in one of the modes, and the smartphone does not have auto-brightness. There is also no oleophobic coating, which is now very rare even on very cheap Chinese ones, which is sad.

Performance.

We recommend this smartphone exclusively for movies and surfing the Internet, because it is very difficult for it to cope with heavy games due to the not very powerful processor.

Depressing test results show that the hardware is frankly weak by today's standards. The smartphone thinks about every action for a long time, does everything slowly, but you need to take into account that it is not a flagship. The game Asphalt 8 will work great, apparently well optimized for this processor. The device will not be able to handle anything heavier. Not everything is so smooth with memory, you will only have 4.1 GB available for applications, frankly speaking, this is not enough for 2017, very little.

Cameras.

We won't talk much about the quality of the cameras. They shoot mediocrely. It was not possible to take good pictures, despite the large number of MP in the characteristics. Judge for yourself, we have both original photographs and video examples.

Original photos from Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016).

Video example:

But from the point of view of the camera’s software, everything is not so bad. There are enough different modes.

Autonomy.

This indicator is at a good level. You will have approximately up to 1.5 days of live use in normal mode. If you try, you can last two days, and if you use the critical energy saving mode that is here, your device will last you even longer, but only as a phone. If you use a smart phone more actively, then day.

Shell.

A lot has already been said about her on our website. Therefore, I recommend just visiting the page TouchWiz shell from Samsung and get acquainted with all its capabilities. And if you don’t want to do this (which is a shame!), then look at the screenshots of the system, which, by the way, is built on Android 5.1.1; for some reason there are no updates to this day.

Connection.

Our hero catches satellites quite well, and the GPS navigator will easily help you out.

There are no problems with other networks either, the device works great in 4G networks, there is an FM radio. There is no second microphone on the body for noise reduction, so, most likely, the interlocutor will not hear you so well. No NFC, no Samsung Pay for you.

Results.

You get an excellent smartphone for watching movies and communicating on social networks from a reputable company. A device with normal autonomy. If you don’t need more from your smartphone, then there’s nothing to think about. The price for brand A is not so low, maybe you should take it!

Camera Features

It is unlikely that it will come as a big surprise to anyone that the camera installed on the phone is quite mediocre. And it is suitable for the simplest photographs for the most undemanding taste. Well, what else can you expect from an economy class model? The main lens of the Galaxy J3 2020 has 8 megapixels, while the front camera has 5 megapixels. The shooting menu, like the design of the phone as a whole, is not original. Here you can find the “Take a picture” button familiar to any Samsung user, the gallery, changing the main/front cameras, as well as changing photo and video lenses. On the other side of the screen there are icons for various settings.

The camera has extensive and precise settings options. Owners have access to several standard shooting modes. Fans of manual settings will also not be disappointed

There is also an HDR mode, which increases the dynamic range of the frame and levels out various overexposures in the image, as well as dips in darkness, to an acceptable level. For those who prefer to manually configure the camera inside and out for each frame, Pro mode is available.

In this mode, you can manually adjust, for example, white balance, ISO, exposure and much more

Daytime shooting (+photo)

The camera in the Samsung Galaxy J3 2020 behaves quite predictably for a budget phone camera. Under almost ideal conditions of good lighting and minimal shaking of hands or objects in the frame, the pictures come out clear, detailed, rich and bright. The camera accurately determines the light balance, and the color rendition is close to the original. However, as soon as even one component of the “ideal” shooting disappears, the quality of the frames noticeably decreases, blurriness appears, and color is lost. In addition, many users note that the phone sometimes takes too long to select an object to focus on.

Quality and detail in sufficient daylight show excellent results

It’s more difficult to photograph people: the slightest movement and part of the photo is blurred

Automatic white balance also works well

Color reproduction is very accurate, despite cloudy skies and no sun

Night photography (+photo)

In low light, indoors or at night, you shouldn’t hope for good quality of the shots you take. Images immediately lose daytime detail, a large amount of noise appears, and the pictures become grayer and duller. At the same time, autofocus noticeably begins to slow down.

As soon as dusk falls, you can safely put your Samsung Galaxy J3 2016 in your pocket

At night, the detail of images drops several times

Noise appears and color rendering begins to falter

Autofocus, it seems, is starting to seriously think about whether it’s worth trying to shoot something at all

Macro mode, in general, behaves well even indoors. Of course, you can’t hope for a rich and bright photo, but the pictures come out at a decent level

If you want to get a blur-free picture indoors in normal mode, you will have to provide your phone with very serious stabilization

But it’s impossible to capture moving objects with excellent detail.

Video recording

The story with the video is the same. The phone records videos in a resolution of 1020 x 720, i.e. only HD, frame rate 30 fps. In sufficient daylight, the results are quite good even if it is not Full-HD. But at night the quality drops significantly.

Front-camera

Everything is exactly the same in the case of the front camera. The 5 MP lens produces acceptable results during the day and in well-lit areas. The front camera of the Galaxy J3 2016 does not have a built-in flash, so at night or in a room with dim light, you simply cannot take a selfie (not that high-quality, but at least distinguishable).

Despite the fact that the resolution of the front camera of the Samsung Galaxy J3 is lower than that of the main one, pictures taken with it sometimes come out much better

But not always

Samsung Galaxy J3 Pro

At the end of the fifteenth year, Samsung announced an affordable smartphone with a five-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 720x1280 pixels. It was a Samsung Galaxy J3 smartphone, available in white, black and gold. This time, the global brand presented the pro version of this smartphone in white-gold and black-silver versions. How does the new Samsung Galaxy J3 Pro from its predecessor?

Appearance

Today, the most successful smartphones are those that are made in a stylish metal case. Of course, especially experienced users also pay attention to the characteristics, but many want to join the exclusive at a budget price. This trend was partly set by the Apple iPhone 6 gadget in an aluminum case with rounded corners. Later, the trend was picked up by Chinese manufacturers who wanted to conquer the market.

Looking at how the Xiaomi Redmi 3 smartphone and the Meizu m3s model are taking a piece of the pie, Samsung could not stay away and also released its budget phone Samsung Galaxy G3 Pro in a metal design and at an affordable price. Thus, the new product resembles the metal Samsung Galaxy C5 smartphone with rounded edges and a home button. The flash and speaker grille are placed on either side of the camera lens, as was implemented in last year's plastic Samsung Galaxy J5 phone.

Filling

You shouldn’t expect any fundamental changes in technical terms from the smartphone. Performance is provided by a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, although the amount of RAM has increased from one and a half to two gigabytes. The amount of permanent memory has also increased: now the device has 16 gigabytes with expandability. As for the battery: there is still 2600 mAh, and the main camera is eight megapixels.

Taking into account the updated Qualcomm processor, the device supports operation in modern wireless networks; in addition, in addition to GPS and Glonass navigation, Chinese bds is supported. Fans of software improvements will want to buy the new product, because the device can be updated to Android 6.0 almost immediately after release. Whether it is worth paying $150 for a smartphone is up to the user who is tired of plastic products from a global brand to decide: nevertheless, the metal case will be a strong argument in favor of the purchase.

User reviews

Let me say right away: the phone is great. The screen is beautiful. The colors are bright and rich, but at the same time natural and not “poisonous”. The shooting quality is very good for this pixel size. And with high-quality lighting and proper dexterity in photography, it is entitled to an “excellent” rating. As for the computing power, it’s worth mentioning that, despite the fact that most of it is constantly busy (we don’t know what, really), even when running very significant applications, the device does not sag and always provides stable operation. At first there were some problems with the software (in particular with the camera application), but in a single case they were quickly fixed. For some unknown reason, the microphone channel gets clogged (which, as I understand from what I read, has frayed a lot of people’s nerves), but this problem is easily eliminated by carefully making grooves with a toothpick (just to avoid accidentally defloring it, so it’s better to first become familiar with the position of the microphone).

For me, the lack of headphones included was a minus - what kind of greed is that?! Pros: The charge lasts quite a long time (but I always set the display brightness to almost minimum, and turn on the Internet only when necessary). Record - 4 days. If I actively use it, then 1.5 days. You can find many cases for this phone on Aliexpress. For such a price, you can REALLY use a phone, and not worry about it like a deity.

https://irecommend.ru/content/moi-lyubimchik-no-est-svoi-no

In general, after a month of using the gadget, I am quite pleased with the gadget - a good assistant in my work (the Internet, communications are actively used, a loud speaker, good sound, high-quality work of mail, Microsoft applications, any file formats can be opened). A convenient camera of good quality. A large screen can also be a plus - it’s convenient to watch videos and documents (especially scans). The main drawback is the battery. You always have to carry an external battery with you, since during active use there is not enough charge for a full day.

Video: phone specifications

Overall, if you don't expect the same level of luxury models from this phone and are ready for something simpler, you will be happy with the phone. The middle model J3 of the budget line of South Korean smartphones is quite suitable if, say, you want to buy it for a child, not very advanced parents, as a small gift, etc. It is suitable for any user who is not particularly demanding about the hardware of their phone or only uses its most basic functions. Otherwise, we advise you to take a look at the range of Chinese analogues. For the same money - 9,000 - 10,000 rubles - they offer much more equipped and advanced equipment.
