Review of the Huawei Honor 9 Lite smartphone and its characteristics

At the end of March 2020, after two weeks of painstakingly searching for information about smartphones, I chose and purchased Honor 9 Lite for myself as my main smartphone. After exactly a year of operation, I want to share my impressions, emotions, feedback and constructive facts about this phone model.
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • Hardware capabilities in games and multitasking
  • Autonomy
  • Specifications
  • Grade
  • Brief summary
  • Appearance

    Honor 9 Lite stands out from the crowd and attracts attention with its appearance. The aluminum case, covered with so-called 2.5D glass, gives the device a special, expensive look. In models of sapphire blue and gray, the light shimmers beautifully, and looking at the clean glass on both sides, a mirror reflection is clearly visible.

    With this smartphone:

    • It’s comfortable to walk down the street and talk by putting the device to your ear;
    • there is no shame in putting it on the table in a restaurant, even if the interlocutor has the latest iPhone model;
    • if the interlocutor or a random passer-by does not know what kind of smartphone model it is, then based on appearance, build quality and tactile sensations (if you give the gadget in your hands), they will give you a 100% answer that it is a flagship;
    • goes well with a formal suit;
    • the first impression is always positive.

    I proceeded from practical reasons, and simply because I like this color better, I took the Honor 9 Lite in black.

    For appearance

    , my rating for the smartphone is 10 out of 10.

    The device in operation

    Of course, the word Lite is in the name for a reason. If in appearance and some other indicators the smartphone can compete with another flagship, then in terms of hardware, simplification has been made. The device runs on an eight-core Kirin 659 processor with a clock frequency of 2.36 GHz paired with a Mali-T830 MP2 graphics accelerator. This, of course, is not top-level, although not bad. Our copy of the smartphone had 3 GB of RAM and a 32 GB internal storage.

    There are also versions of the device with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of ROM. In any version, you can use a second SIM card to expand the built-in memory with a microSD card with a maximum allowable capacity of up to 256 GB.

    In synthetic tests, the device showed the following results:

    On paper and in numbers, the difference in technical characteristics may look significant, but in reality it turns out to be by no means so dramatic, depending on the usage scenarios. So, for example, during simple everyday work with a smartphone, correspondence on social networks, web surfing and watching videos on YouTube, you don’t feel any particular “cut-down” - everything works quite smoothly and quickly. Only in some places, during very hardcore multitasking, can you catch some “blunts”.

    The only activity in which the simplicity of the Lite version directly makes itself felt is games. This is due to a rather weak video accelerator and a fairly high screen resolution, which requires more resources:

    Injustice 2: the game starts and works, but the fps is quite low - you can play it, but it’s uncomfortable due to the lack of smoothness

    World of Tanks Blitz: 43–60 fps can be played at low settings; at high settings the frame rate is no longer sufficient

    The device turned out to have good multimedia capabilities. Firstly, the smartphone is equipped with a fairly loud built-in speaker. Secondly, the system includes a software system for improving sound in headphones, which allows you to “squeeze out” pleasant sound even through simple headphones. This, of course, is not at the audiophile level, but most music lovers will most likely not be disappointed.

    The fingerprint scanner also does not let you down - it works quickly and supports additional functions, just like in more expensive smartphones.

    Ergonomics

    As for convenience and practicality of use, in general everything is good, except for a few points.

    In similar case sizes, competitors usually fit a 5.2-inch display. Honor, due to the reduced frames on the right and left of the screen, has achieved the placement of a 5.65-inch display. Because of this decision, Honor 9 Lite has a screen with an aspect ratio of 19:8, and it cannot be called a shovel.

    It fits well in the hand, the case thickness is 7.6 mm and the rounded edges help you hold the smartphone in one hand and surf the Internet with your thumb. But using one hand, I can’t reach all corners of the smartphone with my thumb, at least for me.

    You have to move the gadget a little in your palm, which causes slight discomfort.

    For me, the weight of the smartphone is noticeable (Honor 9 Lite was 4 years away from the feather-light Samsung Galaxy S4), but this is for the better.

    As for the black edges of the empty space, they are not noticeable on this display, and provide room for fingers when holding the phone in a horizontal position.

    Horizontal coverage hides the two front cameras on the left side and does not cover the speaker on the right. This contributes to a good perception of the content, be it a game, a movie or a regular book.

    The phone fits easily into your clothing pocket and does not slip out of your hands.

    Regarding the shortcomings identified during the period of operation:

    1. The main dual camera, enclosed in a small frame, has a millimeter protrusion above the glass. By placing the device on a flat surface and pressing on the lower right edge, the play is clearly visible. Because of this, the smartphone, especially in the first 3-4 months, slid on its own on even and smooth surfaces. So, he ran away from me from the edge of the sofa, table, open and closed laptop.
    2. Honor 9 Light is very easily soiled. You will have to wipe it down often, so it’s better to get yourself into a new habit.
    3. If you don’t wipe your smartphone for a long time or your fingers are wet or sweaty (especially in the summer), then the fingerprint scanner on the back of the screen refuses to read your fingerprint. Until you wipe your finger dry and wipe the scanner, you won’t be able to unlock it using this method.
    4. Well, the previously mentioned minor inconvenience is that when working with one hand, you won’t be able to reach all corners of the screen with your thumb. To do this, you need to loosen your grip and lower the phone slightly onto your fingers to give your thumb freedom of movement.

    Ergonomics:

    7 out of 10 points.

    Screen

    The Honor 9 Lite screen diagonal is an impressive 5.65 inches. Its description would not be complete without noting the significantly reduced thickness of the side frames. Thanks to this, the device looks stylish, and its dimensions are slightly different from models with a 5.2-inch screen.

    If you review the Honor 9 lite and compare it with products from other manufacturers, you can immediately note that the smartphone does not look like a shovel at all . It impresses with its thoughtful design and cutting-edge appearance thanks to its display size, slim body and rounded edges.

    The technical characteristics of the model’s display will not cause any complaints even among demanding users. The color gamut is maximum according to the RGB standard, the display is smooth. Gamma curve - no blue or red bias. The matrix, manufactured using one of the most modern technological processes, can be considered a standard for the accuracy of displaying color information.

    Screen resolution is 2160x1080 pixels with an aspect ratio of 18:9. The density of 427 pixels per inch allows the smartphone to render the smallest image details and small point fonts.

    Important! In the useful features of Honor 9 Lite, you can safely include the function of lowering the screen resolution. When this mode is activated, the system's power consumption drops sharply.

    The display settings include a reading protection mode and the ability to change color temperature. According to user reviews, with the minimum brightness of the backlight on your smartphone, you can work comfortably even in complete darkness, and the maximum level is sufficient to confidently distinguish the screen image on a sunny day.

    As a disadvantage of the model, we can note the lack of a sharpening mode in strong lighting. However, this does not in any way detract from the excellent display characteristics of the Honor 9 Lite. Covering with protective glass without an air gap allows you to observe minimal color changes from any viewing angle.

    What happens to a smartphone after a fall?

    Do not put a cover on it under any circumstances. There is no point in hiding such beauty!

    As for safety, I will say this: it fell on me 30-40 times. There were serious falls onto the tiles from a meter height and onto the asphalt (from about 1 meter 70 centimeters), there were no cracks or chips of the glass, only a microscopic dent remained on the end, which is noticeable in bright light and detailed examination.

    My friend, who purchased the same model of smartphone, dropped the gadget in the gym on the metal body of one of the exercise machines. Just fell out of my pocket while doing an angle press. A gray spot appeared on the end of the device, which was easily removed with a finger. As it turned out, the smartphone, as a result of the fall, knocked a piece of paint off the body of the simulator and was left without a scratch or dent.

    Therefore, don’t wear a cover, really.

    Features of setting up the standard Honor 10 camera

    In premium Honor devices, you can improve photo quality with standard settings:

    • The Live Photo feature will only work in one Photo mode. It can give the picture richness and color if you take a photo in good lighting, moderate light, etc.;
    • Use different shooting modes and select the appropriate one: “Bright”, “Normal”, “Fad”. These modes are supported in all shooting modes except Portrait;
    • Basic photography settings can be found on the camera's main screen. You can enable them in the upper right corner. Use zoom when you need to bring the subject in the photo closer. Standard camera settings for Honor 10

    The most popular and important modes for photography are Night and Portrait. They are also available for camera. Turn on “Night” in the dark, but the standard mode settings may not help create a cool image in all cases. The quality of the photo also depends on how dark it is outside or in the room where you are trying to take a photo. Accordingly, use “Portrait” for a group photo, when you need to concentrate attention on the face.

    When you turn on the camera on Honor, the main elements for setting up shooting are located on the screen:

    • The Latin letter “ S
      ” is the shooting shutter speed in seconds;
    • The "ISO" icon is the light sensitivity setting;
    • Zoom - the control is on the right. Honor 10 camera buttons and functions

    Night mode usually has a high shutter speed setting. Therefore, photos often turn out blurry. If you want the best quality photos, use a tripod

    .

    Display

    The smartphone screen is truly pleasing to the eye. The AMOLED screen delivers an excellent picture in Full HD+ resolution. There is no “caustic acid” in color rendering, no backlight flickering, only soft and smooth automatic adjustment.

    There is a special mode with soft yellow light to protect your eyes from overstrain. In general, the entire implementation of the gadget is made for comfortable visual perception.

    If something about the colors doesn’t suit you, there is a flexible adjustment of the color temperature of the normal and vision protection mode. I did not touch these settings and left them “as is”.

    At night - perfectly visible at minimum brightness. In sunny weather, maximum brightness is more than enough. Even if the screen is exposed to direct sunlight, you can read the text on the screen without any problems.

    And to boot, there is a reduced HD+ screen resolution mode.

    The pixels are not visible, the picture quality sags a little, but it significantly saves battery. A useful feature if the gadget will not charge for several days.

    Screen quality:

    9 out of 10 points.

    Battery

    Unfortunately, you can’t feel confident away from a power outlet with this smartphone. The built-in 3000 mAh battery lasts for a maximum of 1.5 days in normal use. Another couple of hours of gaming and Honor 9 Lite has to be charged every evening.

    In a practical test of autonomy, we used World of Tanks: Blitz as a reference. After an hour of playing at medium screen brightness, the smartphone was discharged by about 20%. In continuous FullHD video playback mode, the device lasted about 10 hours.

    Camera

    I’ll write right away - this is not a camera phone. Yes, the smartphone has dual cameras on the back and front, but the smartphone does not take super high-quality photos.

    But it’s also impossible to call a smartphone completely bad in terms of photographs. Using modes and settings, especially in good light, you can get pretty decent photos.

    I wrote about the shooting settings of Honor 9 Lite here.

    Morning (the contrast of the clouds played).

    Day (cloudy).

    At night or in low light conditions, the photo capabilities of the device are all gone.

    Flash brightness is average. In the photo, the text from a book or A4 is clearly visible.

    There’s no need to brag about the video capabilities either. Shooting is available in a maximum of Full HD (16:9), in the H.264 codec, with a bitrate of 17 Mb/s. Camera stabilization when walking is weak. Sound recording is at an average level. It is written in quality 192 Kb/s, 48 KHz, in AAC format. Wind or extraneous continuous noise is a serious problem when recording voice.

    Note!

    Photos from a smartphone without compression, I uploaded them in a separate archive.

    Camera quality:

    4 points out of 10.

    Hardware platform

    The main disadvantages of Honor 9 lite are the sharp reduction in the computing power of the hardware platform: there are no coprocessors or sound chips, as in the flagship model . The key disadvantages can be described as follows:

    • when the processor is heavily loaded, energy consumption increases sharply;
    • games lack system performance - popular Tanks show 50 frames per second only on minimum settings;
    • The demands of applications not optimized for 18:9 screens increase significantly.

    However, such unpleasant secrets of Honor 9 Lite are of interest only to a small audience of users. People who are interested in surfing the net, working with several applications at the same time, chatting on social networks and watching movies will not find any shortcomings in the model. Slight slowdowns are observed only with a significant number of running programs with good appetites.

    Honor 9 Lite shows smooth rendering and almost instantaneous reactions to user actions in everyday tasks. The fingerprint scanner on the rear panel has also received excellent reviews - the sensor is sensitive and responds quickly.

    Separately, it is worth noting the multimedia capabilities of Honor 9 light. The device is equipped with a loud and high-quality speaker. The operating system offers a proprietary sound enhancement application. With its help you can get good sound even in inexpensive and oak headphones.

    Interface

    Out of the box, Honor 9 Lite runs on Android 8.0 with the proprietary EMUI 8.0 add-on.

    Machine learning has been introduced into the EMUI operating system, which analyzes the user’s work with the smartphone and uses a personalized algorithm to speed up the work of Honor 9 Lite. Based on an analysis of launched applications and the time they were launched, the system tries to predict your actions, loading frequently used programs into memory at a specific period of time.

    I read about this kind of work of artificial intelligence before buying a smartphone. In general, I did not notice a noticeable increase in the acceleration of the smartphone. But most importantly, after a year of use, I did not notice any excessive freezes or severe lags of the interface.

    Everything about the design of the EMUI shell is perfect: neat fonts, identical icon shapes and unity of style throughout the entire interface.

    Standard, like many other proposed design themes, are made with high quality and taste.

    There are no complaints about the management. Among the additional features I would like to highlight:

    1. Flip the device to mute the sound (incoming, alarm, timer).
    2. Double tap on the screen to enable or disable the screen lock.
    3. Taking a screenshot by moving three fingers together on the screen.
    4. Special features for people with visual impairments and more, with a ton of flexible settings.

    Sound

    The Honor 9 Lite is fine with multimedia. No, seriously, the speaker came out pretty loud.

    And the DAC helps you enjoy pleasant sound, even through the included headphones.

    The gadget connected to the headphones allows you to go into the audio effects settings, select the desired type of headphones and adjust the equalizer.

    Calls

    The smartphone can use 2 SIM cards. Calls occur in standby mode (while you are talking on one, the second is not available for incoming and outgoing calls). Since the smartphone has a combined slot, you need to make a choice between a second SIM card and increasing memory using a MicroSD card.

    Note!

    I have posted instructions on how to install a SIM card in Honor 9 Lite on a separate page.

    The radio module of the global version of the smartphone supports all GSM frequency bands for communication, and LTE frequency bands, which are used by cellular operators in Russia and Europe.

    The speaker is loud, the interlocutor can be heard perfectly. By turning the volume up to maximum, you can hear your interlocutor in a noisy public place.

    The noise reduction of the microphone is good. In the same noisy place, you will be able to answer your interlocutor and he will understand your words.

    Contactless payment

    The beauty of this smartphone is the NFC chip present on board. This means that you can easily link your Visa and MasterCard to Google Pay and make payments at the terminal using Honor 9 Lite.

    I described in detail the instructions for linking cards and their use via NFC on this page.

    Interface

    gets subjective: 8 out of 10 points.

    Software

    Like the Huawei P Smart with similar specifications, the Honor 9 Lite runs on the latest Android 8.0, which is a big plus. Another similarity is the EMUI shell, but this is not such a positive point. Version 8.0 is installed and the system continues to look like an unfinished combination of Android and iOS.

    Huawei follows Apple and completely removes the application list, scattering application icons in folders on the home screen. The notification panel is more like a pure Android version, you can expand it and access quick action shortcuts. Gradually you get used to the shell. The main thing is that it is fast and stable, and has clear animation.

    On the other hand, EMUI doesn't offer any distinctive features. The system clearly lacks the identity and standard design of Android or iOS, HTC and Sony shells have an edge over it.

    Unfortunately, there are quite a few pre-installed applications. There is a “Themes” program for customizing the appearance of the home screen and menu, a file manager, a phone manager for scanning viruses, blocking contacts, etc.

    Own applications “Music”, “Video”, “Gallery” duplicate the pre-installed Google programs. The purpose of this is unclear since Google's apps are much better. Even the Gallery and Health app counterparts have better Google and third-party options in the store.

    There are half a dozen games produced by Gameloft, ranging from good to mediocre. It was also quite possible to do without them. Among the advantages is the installed SwiftKey keyboard, which is one of the best on mobile devices.

    Fingerprint scanner

    Everything is in order with the security of the device. The best option of all presented is the fingerprint scanner on the back of the smartphone. Registration occurs in a standard way; up to 5 prints can be stored in memory.

    In addition to its main function, using a fingerprint scanner you can:

    1. Answer the call.
    2. Turn off the alarm.
    3. Take pictures and turn on video recording.
    4. Open the notification panel.
    5. View photos in full screen mode.

    Additionally, you can use other protection methods:

    • pin;
    • graphic key;
    • facial recognition.

    The latter method is not entirely safe, since the Honor 9 Lite is not equipped with many sensors for high-quality protection during facial recognition. Yes, the method is very convenient, but a person who looks like you, or a photo of you, can easily unlock your smartphone.

    Safety

    : 7 points out of 10.

    Android 8 with additional features

    Honor installs Android 8 on the 9 Lite under a user interface called EMUI and developed by Huawei. The security system update package was up to date at the time of testing. The system looks good, is easy to control, and responds promptly to user commands. By default, there is no separate application menu; all program icons are located on the desktop. However, this can be corrected if someone considers this approach not visual enough.

    We even liked some of the customization options: in particular, you can assign the camera shutter function to the fingerprint scanner or thus pull out the notification shade.

    The Android 8 system looks good and responds quickly to commands. Illustration: Chip

    Hardware capabilities in games and multitasking

    The Honor 9 Lite cannot boast of a graphical component, but it also cannot be called completely stifling. The GPU handles most games at medium and low settings, with a screen resolution of 2160x1080 pixels.

    But drawdowns in FPS cannot be completely avoided, especially in:

    • not optimized games;
    • complex and dynamic scenes;
    • with a large concentration of players and depicting their actions in one place.

    The GPU Turbo technology that Huawei introduced into its gadgets is available for this gadget as of September updates. With its help, FPS in games is automatically optimized. The technology really works, but when the quality of detail in games increases, with a subsequent drop in FPS, it will not help.

    When it comes to multitasking, the smartphone fails. Constantly switching between applications, using a smartphone during a messenger call, parallel use of 3 or more programs leads the smartphone to lags, freezes, incomprehensible bugs, freezes, which are corrected by clearing the memory or rebooting the device.

    Multitasking and hardware capabilities

    : 5 out of 10 points.

    Performance

    One of the reasons Honor smartphones are so attractive and feature-rich compared to competitors is the access to cheap HiSilicon processors made by Huawei.

    In this case, the Kirin 659 2.36 GHz is used, supported by 3 GB of RAM. This is 1 GB less compared to Honor 7x.

    The Kirin 659 can be called a low-to-mid processor that competes with entry-level Snapdragon chips. It scored 3,644 in Geekbench 4 multi-core testing. That's below the slightly more expensive Snapdragon 625-powered Moto G5S Plus with a score of 4,460, but above the similarly priced Snapdragon 430-powered Moto G5S with a score of 2,294.

    There is no need to complain in everyday work. Launching applications and moving between them occurs without a hitch, important functions like waking up the device using a fingerprint scanner and launching the camera also do not slow down.

    Obviously, this is not a gaming device, so there is noticeable stuttering in games like Guns of Boom and Into the Dead 2. The latter failed to achieve stable frame rates, while the former runs quite well.

    The storage capacity is 32 GB, you can install a microSD memory card. This makes the Honor 9 Lite suitable for storing multimedia files like music and videos.

    Autonomy

    The battery works in tandem with the EMUI shell, so the charge is not consumed left and right. During normal operation of the smartphone (meaning without significant load on the processor and video accelerator, as happens during games), the battery shows autonomy for 20 hours.

    Additionally, there is:

    • energy saving mode;
    • ultra;
    • changing screen resolution;

    It is also possible to monitor statistics and battery usage.

    So at any moment you can figure out what might be consuming precious energy so voraciously.

    On my own behalf, I will say that I charge my smartphone once a day. I’ll put it on charge at night, and in the morning I’ll put it in my jeans pocket and go to work. In the evening, from 60 to 25% of the charge remains, depending on the “intensity” of the working day.

    It has never let me down in terms of battery drain, like the same Samsung smartphones do. If it says that there is 6% charge left, that means it is. I can make one long call, several calls, or go online for a few minutes, without fear that it will go down right now.

    Autonomy

    : 8 out of 10 points, because you always want more.

    Practice. Shooting a cityscape

    We make our first attempt at time-lapse filming on the road, near Moscow City. We didn't have a tripod with us, so we had to use a car clothespin with a suction cup, placing it on the curb. Having composed the frame, we will once again make sure that the smartphone is motionless. Fixation of the smartphone is very critical - even small shakes will be visually aggravated due to the acceleration of the video and spoil the final picture.

    Another nuance of shooting concerns scenes with changing lighting - sunsets and sunrises. You will experience a step change in exposure. To justify program developers, let's say that even for professionals this task does not have simple solutions.

    The result of time-lapse shooting is quite unpredictable and this makes it very interesting. For example, it is impossible to predict what shape a cloud will pass across the sky in a few minutes. If you are photographing a beautiful sunset, will the solar disk be visible at the moment it touches the horizon or will it be covered by an approaching cloud. And finally, won’t some dog come to see what you’re doing here and block the camera of your smartphone!

    But let's get back to the test shooting. When building the composition of the frame, it was possible to focus on the sky and the top of the buildings without capturing the horizon in the frame - the plot would be about how the clouds move and the movement is reflected in the glass.

    But we did it differently - we brought passers-by into the frame. On the one hand, this is a contrast of measured and fast movement, and on the other hand, it was interesting to see what people look like when photographed by a specific smartphone model.

    Some will not be impressed by the measured movement of clouds in the frame, combined with the bustle and flickering of fast objects - be it people, cars or tree branches swayed by the wind. But just don’t think that “you can’t shoot like that!” - do not limit either others or yourself. Surely, some of you will find your own style and compelling stories with deliberately fast movement. Try it! And while we were talking about the nuances of filming, the timer beeped - the camera was filming for 10 minutes. As a result, 20 seconds of clouds flying over the Moscow City were born. As you can see, you will need patience, and your smartphone battery will need a full charge.

    In Honor 9, the captured timelapse goes into the “Camera” folder and is duplicated in the “Video from the camera” collection. The smartphone makes it possible to edit a time-lapse by cutting off the beginning or end of the video and leaving only the significant part with the culmination of the event.

    I thought it was the right decision to leave the characteristics plate at the end. It is likely that before getting to the pages of my review, you have already become acquainted with the performance characteristics of the smartphone. But if you forgot something or didn’t know something, then all the information is in one place.

    Advice!

    There is a new Honor 10 Lite model on sale. I recommend that you familiarize yourself with its capabilities in this brief review.

    Design

    Like last year's Honor 7, the Lite has an edge-to-edge screen and a modern look, but at an even more affordable price. The developers called the screen FullView, although this name is usually applied to models with a higher screen-to-body ratio.

    Honor 9 Lite cannot be called frameless at all. It doesn't have an edge-to-edge screen on the sides like the Galaxy S9, and it also has bezels at the top and bottom. Despite this, a significant part of the front side is occupied by a 5.65-inch panel.

    As a result, there is no space left for a fingerprint scanner on the front, unlike the Honor 9 model. The scanner had to be placed on the back, in the upper half of the body. It works quickly and reliably, giving access to the system. This component left a good impression on the Honor 7X, so it's nice to see the same performance on a cheaper device. Unfortunately, there is no NFC communication standard, so the Android Pay payment system does not work. It is only present in the LLD-L31 model.

    The rest of the device isn't as impressive or functional. The creators chose a highly reflective tinted glass coating that makes stains easy to collect. On other higher-end smartphones, this design has the practical advantage of wireless charging. She is missing here.

    You can consider this as a bonus for mobile photographers, since before shooting you can look at your smartphone as if in a mirror. Either way, the design of the Honor 9 Lite stands out, making it look more premium than it actually is. The Lite looks cool thanks to its glass back, although it is very slippery. If you place the device on even a slightly uneven surface, such as a wooden bench or the armrest of a chair, it will gradually slide to the floor.

    The glass front and back are joined by a 7.6mm aluminum frame, although the glossy finish makes it look like plastic. The relatively light weight of 149g also contributes to this feeling.
