What is good about this 5G technology?
In addition to high data transfer speeds, another important advantage of the fifth generation network is its low latency. Latency determines the time it takes for a link to respond and open after clicking on it. Currently, websites open at a speed of 20 ms, but the 5G network promises to reduce this time to 1 ms.
This low latency will open up a lot of new possibilities. For example, it will be possible to perform surgical operations remotely. That is, when a surgeon, for example, is in New York and performs an operation using a robotic arm on a patient located on the other side of the world.
Virtual reality video games will also become even more exciting. The smart home system will be able to “get smarter” even more. For example, a smart refrigerator will order products that are out of stock. And all this is not fantasy, but the near future!
In the United States, 5G technology is already being launched, but developing countries will still lag behind. But still, now it’s worth thinking about purchasing a gadget that supports a new generation network.
Let's look at the newest smartphones that are ready to support this network.
Nokia 8.3
- smartphone with Android 10
- Dual SIM support
- screen 6.81″, resolution 2400×1080
- four cameras 64 MP/12 MP/2 MP/2 MP, autofocus
- memory 64 GB, memory card slot
- 3G, 4G LTE, 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
- RAM capacity 6 GB
- battery 4500 mAh
Although Nokia is no longer the same telephone giant it was 15 years ago, its line of gadgets also includes a good smartphone with 5G.
At the MWC event, the announcement was made that the Nokia 8.3 will offer the widest range of compatibility with various 5G networks around the world, and the phone will cost half as much as 5G devices that offer less wide compatibility.
The Nokia 8.3 is powered by the Snapdragon 765 processor, the first Qualcomm processor to combine the brains of a phone with a 5G modem in one integrated module, specifically designed for mid-range 5G phones.
In addition, the smartphone boasts an excellent rear camera with Zeiss optics, a 64 MP main module, a wide-angle module with a 120-degree viewing angle, and support for Super Pixels technology for creating high-quality images in low-light conditions. Another useful feature of the camera is that it can shoot video in 21:9 cinema resolution.
Pros : there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a separate button to launch Google Assistant.
Cons : no wireless charging, only fast 18 W, no optical stabilization, no water protection.
Motorola moto z3
This smartphone is modular. That is, it does not itself support the 5G network, but to connect you need to use a special 5G motto mod.
Phone thickness 6.75 mm, OLED display 6 inches. The coating of the smartphone is water-repellent, the battery is 3000 mAh. The storage can be expanded up to 2TB via microSD and the phone comes with 64GB of storage as standard.
Xiaomi Poco F2 Pro
- smartphone with Android 10
- Dual SIM support
- screen 6.67″, resolution 2400×1080
- four cameras 64 MP/13 MP/5 MP/2 MP, autofocus
- memory 128 GB, without memory card slot
- 3G, 4G LTE, 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC
- RAM capacity 6 GB
- battery 4700 mAh
The solid combination of Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back with the device's metal frame is a huge change from the predominantly polycarbonate design of the original F1. As a result, the F2 Pro looks and feels like a more premium phone than its predecessor.
The selfie camera is housed in a pop-up mechanism that also houses an LED notification light.
The Poco F2 Pro's screen refresh rate is only 60Hz. But it's very bright and has even been upgraded from an IPS LCD to a Super AMOLED panel for better contrast, deeper blacks and more vibrant colors.
“Under the hood” of one of the best 5G smartphones of 2020 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, thanks to which all games and applications will run quickly, smoothly and without lag when switching between them.
Another attractive feature of the smartphone is the rear camera. It has a large sensor with a large number of pixels. Next to it are an ultra-wide camera, a macro camera and a depth camera. The lack of a telephoto lens can be considered reasonable. Most 2x telephoto lenses don't provide much benefit to the user, it's usually better to just use a high quality primary sensor. HDR is not enabled by default, so you must enable it to raise shadows to an acceptable level.
Pros : 3.5 mm headphone jack, fast 30 W charging.
Cons : no optical stabilization and wireless charging. Plus, Xiaomi hasn't made this smartphone waterproof, which is what you'd expect from a high-priced device.
Samsung Galaxy Fold
There are 2 versions of this smartphone: for 4G and for 5G networks. The phone has 2 displays: 4.6 inches and 7.3 inches. The second is an AMOLED dynamic display and the first is an HD+ Super AMOLED.
The smartphone is charged wirelessly, and the battery capacity is 4380 mAh.
ZTE 5G phones
The ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G also launched in February, although without a price yet. Such details became known only at launch.
The Axon is very similar to last year's Huawei P20 Pro and features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and X50 5G modem. It also features a 6.47-inch AMOLED display, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and a triple-camera setup that combines a 40-megapixel f/1.8 primary sensor, a 20-megapixel, 125-degree wide-angle lens, and an 8-inch lens.
Huawei Mate X
This phone is foldable. If folded, the thickness will be 1.1 cm, and when unfolded - 5.4 mm. There are 2 batteries installed here with a total capacity of 4500 mAh. The smartphone supports fast charging technology and can be charged to 85% in just half an hour.
The smartphone can support 2 SIM cards, and it is possible to enable split-screen mode.
NUBIA Red Magic 5G
- smartphone with Android 10
- screen 6.65″, resolution 2340×1080
- three cameras 64 MP/8 MP/2 MP, autofocus
- memory 128 GB, without memory card slot
- 3G, 4G LTE, 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC
- RAM capacity 8 GB
- battery 4500 mAh
The Chinese brand NUBIA has rarely pleased Russian users with something truly impressive. But that all changed with the release of the Red Magic 5G, a powerful smartphone whose 144Hz refresh rate makes the premium Galaxy S20 or OnePlus 8 Pro line envy.
Add to this the top Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, touch gaming triggers and an active cooling system with a fan whose rotation speed reaches 15,000 rpm, as well as surround and loud sound, and you will understand why this smartphone is positioned as a gaming smartphone.
The manufacturer claims that cooling this smartphone can reduce the temperature of the chipset by 18°C in any operating mode. So it will only be your patience that will overheat during prolonged play.
The only weak point of this magnificent device can be called the main camera, or rather its night mode. In low light, it performs mediocre compared to other top smartphones. This problem is partially solved by installing Google Camera. But the front 8 MP camera takes selfies that are excellent in detail and color reproduction.
In Europe, Red Magic 5G is offered in 8/128 GB and 12/256 GB variants, and if you can order from China, you can get a version with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage.
Pros : 55 W charging, Wi-Fi 6 support, 3.5 mm headphone jack, large screen brightness reserve.
Cons : no wireless charging, the fan is very noisy, no IP68 water protection.
Xiaomi Mi MIX 3
For the first time, Xiaomi has released a smartphone that supports the new generation network – 5G. There is a 12 megapixel dual camera installed here, as well as a 24 megapixel front camera. The AMOLED display is housed in a high-quality curved body. The battery has a capacity of 3800 mAh.
This gadget has 3 cameras of 8, 13 and 48 megapixels. Thanks to the main sensor, which uses night mode, you can take high-quality pictures even in low light conditions. The smartphone has a fingerprint sensor as well as the OPPO Breeno smart assistant.
LG V60 ThinQ 5G
- smartphone with Android 10
- Dual SIM support
- screen 6.8″, resolution 2460x1080
- four cameras 108 MP/20 MP/12 MP/8 MP, autofocus
- memory 128 GB, memory card slot
- 3G, 4G LTE, 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC
- RAM capacity 8 GB
- battery 5000 mAh
With a larger 6.8-inch display (compared to the V50's 6.4-inch screen), the V60 looks huge. While this size makes it easy to watch videos and web pages, it will be very difficult to use the smartphone with one hand.
Keep in mind that the V60 has a 60Hz display. If you want to be at the forefront of technology, then choose the Galaxy S20 and OnePlus 8 Pro family, these models have displays with a refresh rate of 120 times per second.
In addition to a headphone jack (a rarity among top-tier phones these days), the LG V60 is unique in that it works with an accessory that effectively doubles the screen size. It's known as Dual Screen and allows the V60 to fold like a book. So you can display two apps on both displays, or view content like you would on a tablet (albeit with a larger hinge in the middle).
The main camera of this model does an excellent job of capturing moving objects and keeping them in focus. In addition, the settings include a 10x digital zoom and a night shooting mode, which will perfectly “lighten” pictures taken in the dark.
Like its competitors, the LG V60 is powered by the Snapdragon 865 chipset for smooth performance. On paper, the V60 beat out the Galaxy S20 to take the lead in 3DMark's Slingshot Unlimited tests and two Geekbench 5 tests. However, their results weren't all that different from each other, and it's doubtful there's a difference in speed when it comes to everyday use.
Pros : case protection according to IP68 standard, there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Cons : not for sale in Russia, on eBay it costs about 40,000 rubles excluding postage and additional screen.
OnePlus 7 Pro
This smartphone will be able to connect to the 5G network using a special X50 modem from Qualcomm. Battery capacity 4000 mAh.
It is possible to charge the phone in accelerated mode. Screen 6.67 inches QHD+ AMOLED.

Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G
- smartphone with Android 10
- Dual SIM support
- screen 6.9″, resolution 3200×1440
- four cameras 108 MP/48 MP/12 MP, autofocus
- memory 128 GB, memory card slot
- 3G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC
- RAM capacity 12 GB
- battery 5000 mAh
This smartphone is great in everything - from the huge Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz to the top-end Samsung Exynos 990 processor and a solid body protected from moisture according to the IP68 standard. If you often watch videos on Netflix or YouTube, then the Ultra model is the most preferable from the Galaxy S20 family. Naturally, it is also heavier.
The 5000 mAh battery supports both fast and wireless charging. Just be aware that using the 120Hz screen refresh rate all day instead of the default 60Hz setting will reduce battery life, so you may need to charge it overnight.
Of course, there are people who will want the S20 Ultra not for the larger screen size, but for the better camera options. And yes, I'm talking about the 108-megapixel OIS camera and its 100x digital zoom. It is unlikely that you will need it often, and there is also a 10x hybrid optical zoom, with which small details in the photo will be better visible. However, it's nice to know that your smartphone has the best of everything, right?
The S20 Ultra also has a 40-megapixel front-facing camera, but its image quality isn't much better than the S20's 10-megapixel selfie camera. There is a limit to how much detail you really need to see on your face.
Pros : You can shoot UHD 8K video at 24 frames per second, external memory can be expanded up to 1 TB.
Cons : price.
