How to choose and what to pay attention to?

There are many options when choosing a gaming monitor, the most significant of which are::

  • Diagonal . This is the main parameter that buyers consider when buying a monitor. For most games, a screen with a diagonal of 24-27 inches is optimal. If the size is larger, then the eyes may not physically see the fully displayed image, in which case you should choose a curved display.
  • Update frequency . This parameter reflects the number of reproduced frames per second. For an office monitor, 60 Hz is quite suitable, while gaming models require a higher frequency - from 120 Hz, which will allow high-quality display of dynamic scenes.
  • Permission . The number of pixels from which the image will be composed depends on this indicator. FullHD (1920×1080) is a resolution that will suit most gamers.

What is the difference between a gaming monitor and an office monitor?

Both types of monitors have the same main goal - displaying the image created by the graphics chip. The difference lies in the speed of frame output, as well as in their quality and quantity. Unlike office monitors, gaming monitors have significantly lower response times and higher frame refresh rates. In this regard, the change of images occurs somewhat faster, which creates an advantage in speed and smoothness.

Category – “Potential Hits”

Now let's move on to the displays, which, from our point of view, could become potential hits. Some of them have already begun to appear on sale, others are on their way to distributors, some, for unknown reasons, are not available for sale in the Russian Federation, while others were announced only recently and should go on sale closer to the end of autumn-early winter of 2020. So let's get started:

1.LG 27GN950-B

They first started talking about the monitor back in January at CES, but the official announcement only happened at the end of July. The device is based on a Nano IPS matrix with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels and, as the vendor emphasizes, is the first 4K IPS display with a 1 ms GtG response time, which, given LG’s previous achievements, we believe in 100%.

The monitor features 98% DCI-P3 color coverage, supports overclocking up to 160Hz, offers 10-bit color representation, supports both adaptive sync systems, and is VESA DisplayHDR 600 certified.

Based on preliminary data, the new product can be expected to cost 1,000 euros, and retail copies should begin arriving in stores in the fall. We are confident that the monitor will seriously compete with other similar models on the market. The fight will be spectacular!

2. LG 27GL83A-B

Another one of the magnificent monitors from LG, which, for some ideological reasons from the manufacturer, never made it to the shelves of Russian stores. Model 27GL83A-B is an analogue of 27GL850, but with a matrix with a standard color gamut. Thanks to such a seemingly insignificant change, the price of the monitor is significantly lower. Its speed, according to tests by Western publications, is at the level of its older brother, and it, in turn, is not only one of the fastest IPS monitors, but also gaming monitors in general (one of the top ten). If the display does reach us, then there is no doubt that it will become one of the sales leaders in its segment.

3. ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQL

ASUS already has one popular monitor of this class with a similar name (VG27AQ), but many manufacturers will envy its initial problems. It went through four revisions, and only in the last one did the company fully deal with the “stuck pixel” and high minimum brightness, and at the same time slightly worked on overclocking the panel, ridding the solution of obvious artifacts at most TraceFree (OD) levels.

The new product in the form of VG27AQL (Shark for short - according to one of our managers) will most likely be free of all these problems, and the price should remain at a comfortable level. The only changes are an expanded color gamut of 90% DCI-P3 (aka 130% sRGB), an overclocked vertical scanning frequency of 170 Hz and a new shape of the stand - some will definitely like it.

4. Acer Predator XB273UGXbmiipruzx

The world's first 240 Hz WQHD monitor was the Lenovo Legion Y27gq-25, but, unfortunately, it did not become a success; most likely, users are scared off by the TN matrix for quite a lot of money for one.

The first 240 Hz WQHD monitors on VA panels were lucky to be Samsung Odyssey solutions, which will be discussed below. This is more a story about image and technological advantage - whoever is first is well done. In the segment of high-speed IPS, for which advanced players have much higher hopes, the first 27-inch WQHD monitor with such speed is destined to be the Acer Predator XB273UGXbmiipruzx, which the company never tires of reminding you about and very soon the new product should hit store shelves.

Taking into account the manufacturer's past exploits in their top Predator line, we have no doubt that the new product will be of high quality, with a familiar design, necessary functions, wide color gamut, sRGB emulation, HDR support (albeit not full), and will also show in reality "Who is the head in this house".

5. Samsung Odyssey G7:LC32G75TQSIXCI|LC27G75TQSIXCI|Samsung Odyssey G9:LC49G95TSSIXCI

Samsung, with its new Odyssey series, which includes three monitors: 32 and 27 inches of the G7 series and the flagship 49-inch G9 series, is making a huge bet on the speed performance of updated *VA matrices. They say that the response time has been significantly reduced and monitors based on them can compete not only with IPS, but also with many TN+Film gaming monitors. We have little faith in this, however, the first tests of popular Western publications carrying out the corresponding measurements actually showed impressive results, albeit with artifacts in place. On the other hand, this does not mean at all that the models turned out perfect. No matter how it is!

All the same publications note problems with contrast, the sRGB emulation mode is practically not working, the average factory setting, poor backlight uniformity on black and some picture problems in dark (gray) scenes. In addition, all other things being equal, the new products turned out to be $150-250 more expensive than their direct competitors based on IPS, which complicates the final purchase decision. We still have to deal with each Odyssey model and test Samsung's promises in practice. Just wait and everything will be fine!

6. Acer Predator XB323UGPbmiiphzx|ASUS ROG Swift PG329Q

Finally, what many people are really waiting for is 32-inch WQHD IPS-type solutions based on high-speed matrices. Here you have a low response time, adequate resolution and pixel density, a large matrix, no need to enable scaling and a relatively light load on the PC.

The first and most anticipated will be the recently introduced Acer Predator XB323UGPbmiiphzx and ASUS ROG Swift PG329Q. Both models belong to the top series of manufacturers, they will be expensive, but the filling, along with the quality of execution, is at the level. Competition, as always, will consist of slightly different pricing policies (Acer is usually cheaper) and a slightly higher declared scanning frequency from ASUS. Those who want “the very best”, regardless of price, will choose ASUS. Preliminarily, Acer can be called a rational purchase. Time will tell, but for now let’s draw conclusions.

Using gaming monitors for content creation

Let these be gaming monitors, but on them you will do ordinary things, like reading texts on websites and watching videos. As a result, you need to know how accurately they are able to display colors in various tests.

sRGB is the basis for displaying content from the Internet, while DCI-P3 color gamut shows the display of colors in video and TV broadcasts. There's also Adobe RGB, which is used as an indicator of color accuracy in software like Adobe Photoshop.

Another measure of color accuracy is a parameter called Delta E. It shows the distance between the most accurate orange color and the orange that the monitor displays. If you want to watch or produce video on a gaming monitor, the main setting is DCI-P3. For creators of content such as images, 3D design, games, modeling, etc., Delta E and Adobe RGB parameters are of greatest importance.
