On the stage of the New Opera theater, a diptych performance was staged, the first part of which is the one-act ballet “Bolero” to the music of Maurice Ravel, and the second is the stage cantata “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff. The choreography was handled by the young Italian choreographer Francesco Ventriglia.
“Bolero” is a very short and extremely expressive musical statement by Ravel, who composed this work commissioned by the famous dancer Ida Rubinstein. Ravel imagined the following plot: workers leave the factory and join the dance, which is fieryly performed by a beautiful girl; there should have been an allusion to a bullfight, and to Bizet’s “Carmen”; in “Bolero”, according to Ravel’s script, a girl is stabbed with a dagger by a jealous man lover. But Ida didn’t like the plot with the factory workers, and she and choreographer Bronislava Nijinska moved the action to a Barcelona tavern, where a beautiful girl begins to dance on a large table in the center, attracting the attention of visitors, gathering them all around the table and causing delight with her passionate dance. One of the most famous productions of “Bolero” was later revised by Maurice Bejart, whose main role was performed by Duska Sifnois, Jorge Donne (there is also a male version of the ballet), our Maya Plisetskaya and the French ballet star Sylvie Guillem.
The ballet staged by Bejart is very complex, it is essentially a solo, performed on a high podium, and the body of the soloist (s) seems to be divided in half - the legs are responsible for the rhythm, and the body and arms create the melody, while the audience (corps de ballet) moves around the podium, completely mesmerized by the rhythm, the dance and the passionate power of the performance.
What happened to Ventriglia and the New Ballet?
Such plastic expressiveness, generated by complexity and unique choreography, is not here, although the production is very reminiscent of Béjart’s version and looks, accordingly, secondary, not reaching the high bar set by Béjart. The soloist (Kristina Kovaleva) dances on the podium at the back of the stage in a black dress and a red wig, which somewhat resembles the flowing long hair of the divine Guillem, but a wig is just that: a wig. But the corps de ballet is dressed in long black skirts, and the dancers have either helmets or BDSM masks on their heads, which they take off towards the end of the performance, and the soloist changes into a white dress, and all this causes some bewilderment, since the simple plot in Spanish tavern turns into something mysterious. It is clear that there is a hint of some liberation here, but from what? Either a rejection of BDSM and a step towards bright love, or from war, although no weapons are visible, the program only states that “strength and passion are combined in every note of Ravel’s music, encouraging the dancers to express through movement the contradictory feelings overwhelming them.” The mystery of the masks has not been revealed, but you definitely feel joy, because you always think that dancing in such a helmet is stuffy and hot. But as for the power and passion of Ravel’s music, that’s for sure, the recognizable classical melody sounds great when performed by the Novaya Opera orchestra conducted by Valery Kritskov!
The second part of the performance is Orff’s oratorio “Carmina Burana”. Once upon a time, the composer accidentally came across the book “Carmina Burana, Latin and German songs and poems from the Benedict-Bewern manuscript of the 13th century, published by I. A. Schmeller” and was inspired by the painting on the cover depicting Fortune. That same night he made sketches for the choir “I mourn the wounds inflicted on me by Fortune”, in the morning he wrote music for the verses “Sweet Desired Spring”, selected 24 works from the book and quite quickly completed the entire oratorio. The result was a magnificent work for choir and orchestra, in which the bright pictures were distinguished by a sharp contrast, these were spring round dances, and songs about love, sometimes romantic, sometimes sensual, tavern songs, philosophical and comic.
With the costumes of the dancers, as in “Bolero,” it’s a complete failure, both girls and boys dance in some kind of camouflage jumpsuits (what’s that for?), the soloist (Anastasia Pershenkova) is dressed in a jumpsuit, then in purple, then in white a dress, which, obviously, should also symbolize something, but there is no particular meaning in all this, angels in white shorts with tiny wings attached directly to their bare back are outright bad taste, and at some point such an angel depicts a swan, writhing on the table to the solo opera part “The Cry of the Roasted Swan”, imitating the singing of the soloist. The choreography is completely simple, oh yes, the “New Ballet” is a theater of plastic dance, although Pershenkova stands out precisely for its classicism, but, let’s say, the magnificent folk dance ensemble named after. Igor Moiseev - this is also not a classical ballet, but what a level of folk dancing there has always been! The accessories on stage look terrible - some kind of plastic films depicting a hedge, artificial flowers, a sheaf also with flowers for some reason - all this is reminiscent of the attributes of a children's matinee.
However, despite all the shortcomings of the choreography, it is clear that young ballet dancers have enormous potential. They feel the enthusiasm and joy of their own dance, but they cope with the given pattern brilliantly. The soloists are Kristina Kovaleva in “Bolero”, and Anastasia Pershenkova and Yegor Maslov in “Carmina Burana”. They all have impressive abilities, artistic expression and are undoubtedly capable of more. The carefully selected corps de ballet also looks quite decent, if we talk about the dance level.
The “New Opera” itself, as always, is at its best, the chorus sounds amazing, in this theater it is above all praise in any production with choral elements, the orchestra under the direction of Yuri Medyanik played harmoniously and expressively, the soloists also pleased, baritone Andrzej Bielecki and tenor Alexander Bogdanov did an excellent job with their parts, and Maria Buynosova was extraordinarily good, her beautiful soprano flowed over the hall, as she sang most of the time from the lighting box. The New Ballet, having shown its good potential, can now definitely lay claim to something more in its creative life.
