vivo V19: elegant simplicity and serious capabilities

Vivo has recently garnered a lot of hype due to its innovative approach to phone development. What is the Vivo Apex worth, which is still in the development stage and will most likely go on sale towards the end of this year. It received a revolutionary design for the front camera - it does not take up space on the front panel, which made it possible to build the largest possible display into a compact body. It has a retractable design and appears only when necessary.

Another innovation was the fingerprint scanner built into the screen, which makes the smartphone truly revolutionary and obviously many other manufacturers will begin to copy the solution. But in the article we will talk about the Vivo V9 smartphone, which became the second in the brand’s range, sales of which officially began in Russia.

Vivo continues to conquer our market by offering a new product in the mid-price segment, but at the same time it also has several interesting features that are more typical of flagships. But alas, when developing the smartphone, they did not ignore the trend with “bangs,” which everyone is now blindly copying from Apple, no matter how much criticism such decisions are subjected to by fans. The result is a Vivo V9 with a huge 6.3-inch display and a characteristic notch on top, which doesn’t look the best, at least in my opinion. Otherwise, the Vivo V9 review is really impressive, because for its price it offers powerful hardware based on a Qualcomm processor, a generous amount of memory and a good front camera with artificial intelligence.

Components of the Vivo V9 smartphone

The start of sales began quite recently and Vivo V9 is supplied in cardboard packaging with a simple design. Its design is decorated with an image of the smartphone itself, as well as an advertising inscription reminding that Vivo V9 is the official phone of the World Cup in Russia. Opening the box, we find the following elements:

  • Charger with parameters 5V, 2A;
  • Transparent silicone bumper, which does not spoil the design and protects the Vivo V9 smartphone from scratches;
  • The microUSB cable is perhaps the main disadvantage of the phone;
  • Clip;
  • Wired headphones.

Bottom line

Vivo V9 Youth is already on sale in Russia at a price of 19,990 rubles. The smartphone is aimed at a young audience who are passionate about getting their hands on the fashionable iPhone X. The latter costs a colossal amount of money and, in general, one cannot do without a loan. And here comes the Vivo V9 Youth with a very similar front panel design and good quality cameras.

On the one hand, a smartphone for 20 thousand and a smartphone for 70 thousand rubles are, to put it mildly, different things. It would seem, what is there to think about, you need to buy Vivo V9 Youth. On the other hand, in this price category our hero has a whole bunch of competitors - Oppo A83, Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Huawei P20 Lite. Each manufacturer has a worthy alternative, so Vivo cannot be envied in the fight against such strong competitors.

Vivo Vivo V9 Youth

Design Features of Vivo V9

The manufacturer follows one simple principle - the highest possible characteristics at a cost not higher than the average segment. But in this case, the savings are clearly visible and begin with trivial details, such as the material used to assemble the case. Plastic was used, which is not at all perceived as premium and is not tactilely as pleasant as metal that cools the hand. Our Vivo V9 smartphone is just starting to go on sale and it is still difficult to judge the quality of the body paint, but judging by the first reviews from Indian customers, the gold version scratches very easily, so it is not in vain that the case is included in the kit. Most likely the problem lies in the lack of an additional layer of varnish, which would make the coating much more reliable. The situation is similar with the black case, but the color hides all scratches well.

When you hold the phone in your hands, there are no associations with the latest iPhone, the design of which is now being copied by everyone. But in the official photos of Vivo V9, the design seems much more similar. The similarity lies only in the characteristic notch on top and the vertical location of the main camera. But the difference between the devices is very large - the iPhone 10 immediately shows that this is a real flagship, and the Vivo smartphone is a simple middling one.

Already from the factory, the Vivo V9 display is covered with a protective film, which most likely will not last long, and the protective glass will be much more reliable. There is an oleophobic coating, but it is not standard, so it is not so easy to wipe off prints. The glass is curved, but barely noticeable. At the same time, when you slide your finger across the screen, you constantly come into contact with a rectangular edge, which is perceived as an obstacle.

The top indentation is completely absent, you don’t notice it at all. Only the bangs are visible, in which the front camera, sensors and earpiece are built in. At the same time, a considerable indentation was left at the bottom, which was made to make it comfortable to hold the smartphone while playing games and watching your favorite films.

The left side of the case is occupied by a tray in which you can install two Nano SIM cards. The big plus is that Vivo V9 contains a separate slot for MicroSD, which means you don’t have to sacrifice anything to expand the memory.

The Vivo V9 review showed that a volume rocker was placed on the right, as well as a power control key.

There is only one speaker, so you have to forget about the stereo sound effect. It is located at the bottom, as we are already accustomed to in most other modern devices. Next to it we see a microphone and a MicroUSB port. In a 2020 phone costing more than 20,000 rubles, this is not what you expect at all, but USB Type-C, which is time to be made a standard, because its advantages are undeniable.

Another sad fact is that it has become a victim of savings - as in the cheapest gadgets, Vivo V9 has only one microphone, which means noise reduction will not work effectively. This is simply not enough; besides, when recording videos, the sound will be non-directional. Your interlocutors will have a hard time hearing you when you are on a noisy street; you don’t expect such savings in the middle price category, because even most state-priced hotels do not have this problem. There was also room at the bottom for a standard 3.5 mm jack, for which we should say special thanks. Good headphones are already included in the standard configuration of the device. Outwardly, they resemble Apple earPods, but are inferior in quality. As for me, silicone earbuds are much more convenient to use.

A fingerprint scanner is located in the center of the rear panel. It is convenient to use, your finger falls on it itself. In the upper left corner we see a vertical dual camera and an LED flash that helps with night photography.

The build quality is at the highest level, but now this applies to most smartphones, even in the budget category. After switching to using a non-separable case, you can forget about backlashes and creaks. A review of the Vivo V9 showed that it fits well in the palm of your hand and, despite the large diagonal of the display, does not cause discomfort when you carry it in your jeans pocket. This is thanks to the minimal thickness of the case and frameless design.

Display

The Vivo V9 64gb smartphone was equipped with a first-class IPS matrix, which was made without an air gap and has a diagonal of 6.3 inches. This is a real phablet that is ideal for games and movies. Thanks to FullHD+ resolution we get 400 pixels per inch. The image turns out juicy and well-detailed, there’s nothing to complain about even if you wanted to. It uses a 19:9 ratio.

The viewing angles are maximum, in general, an excellent job was done on the Vivo V9 display. Factory calibration is optimal; you simply don’t want to change the settings, but if you don’t agree with this, then you can change the color rendition in the menu to suit your needs. It remains to check how the “bangs” behave in applications and the system interface.

Surprisingly, in most cases you don’t notice the top notch. Only the notification panel is displayed at the top of the screen. When you watch a video, the picture is cropped at the edges, so even on widescreen 18:9 videos there are black stripes on the left and right. As a result, the unibrow does not cause any discomfort. Other features include an eye protection mode, which almost every gadget can boast of. It can be turned on manually or on a schedule by specifying a convenient schedule. A review of the Vivo 1723 V9 black smartphone showed that the screen turned out to be of high quality and rather closer to the level of flagships.

The review of the Vivo V9 smartphone makes it clear that its features do not end there. The AI Attention Sensing function is built on the front camera and artificial intelligence system, which allows you to use highly accurate face unlocking. When you look at the screen, it remains active and does not go into sleep mode, even if the time indicated in the settings has expired.

Vivo V9 Youth: equipment and appearance

Do you know why Chinese brands are more attractive than outrageously expensive premium smartphones? Complete set. When purchasing Vivo V9 Youth, you will not have to additionally purchase a case and a protective screen, because all this is included in the kit. Moreover, the protective film is already pasted, so you won’t have to worry about adjusting it either.

This is a big plus, because out of the box you immediately get a device that is ready to work and does not require additional investment. A standard charger, cable and clip for the SIM tray are also included here, along with a warranty card and documentation. And the box is made of thick cardboard, no worse than Apple's.

Visually, the new product is no different from the flagship version: the same 6.3-inch diagonal, similar body design and weight of 150 grams. As for the latter, this is ideal for such a smartphone. You can feel it in your hand, but it doesn’t feel heavy. The large size will require some tactile getting used to if you have previously used a phone with a diagonal of 5 inches or less.

It would seem that there is only one drawback in the design - the back panel is made of glossy plastic, which quickly collects fingerprints. But, if you take into account the fact that a silicone case is immediately put on the smartphone, the problem disappears.

Performance

The technical characteristics of the Vivo V9 are based on the average-power Snapdragon 626 processor, which operates at a frequency of 2.2 GHz. It is paired with the Adreno 506 graphics chip. There is not a lot of RAM, not a little - 4 GB, built-in 64 GB. In addition, there is a separate slot for MicroSD up to 256 GB, so there should be plenty of memory. The Vivo V9 youth review will further take a closer look at how this hardware copes with the real-world tasks you face every day when working with your phone.

The processor belongs to the middle segment, but copes with any everyday tasks perfectly. The interface works smoothly, there are no problems loading applications or scrolling pages in the browser. This is due to good system optimization and the use of a proven processor that has performed well in competitor products.

Vivo V9 in Antutu is presented below

I tested in games using the GameBench application, and one unpleasant feature surfaced - the shell suppresses all background processes too aggressively. Yes, this saves battery power on the Vivo V9, but due to this feature, GameBench interrupts recording after a few minutes. This is strange, because the application is in the exceptions list, and the power saving mode is disabled. The problem only went away when I tested while charging the phone. This is a software bug that should be fixed in updates. Almost always, after the start of sales of a new model, errors appear every now and then in its shell, and after the release all the bugs are fixed.

I started my review of the Vivo V9 phone by testing it in the recently announced PUBG Mobile, where on the average graphics we have only 26 fps. At the same time, the game cannot be called comfortable; sometimes there are minor slowdowns. In such demanding games, you can only enjoy the process on the lowest graphics.

In Tanks, the result is approximately comparable - on the average graph we have 34 frames per second. You can play and there are practically no lags, but it’s much better to set the graphics to minimum and forget about the lags. In this case, fps on average will be about 58.

Methods to unlock Vivo V9 smartphone

As the Vivo V9 black review showed, the fingerprint scanner located on the back side works quickly and accurately recognizes the owner’s fingerprint. To unlock the device, you do not need to activate the screen; you just need to place your finger on the sensor. Unlocking occurs instantly. But this is not the only option for user identification. You can also use face unlock, which uses the front camera. Artificial intelligence helps with verification by scanning your face to verify your identity. But so far the function is not working well, and the whole point is that it is based on the front camera, and therefore strongly depends on the quality of the lighting around you. The worse it is, the more difficult it will be for the smartphone to recognize you, so it’s easier to use a standard fingerprint scanner, which works great.

Chinese chic Vivo V17 Neo

The appearance of the smartphone is reminiscent of its Chinese counterparts, who try to look more expensive and better than they actually are. The colors are unusual and beautiful, the gradient is deep, but there is no feeling that the phone is really expensive.

Even the “rich” golden edging doesn’t help.

Another downside is that in the “black diamond” color the phone is very easily soiled. I don't like to carry my phone in a case, but in the case of the V17 Neo it is necessary, otherwise the phone will get dirty very quickly.

Vivo V17 Neo display

The 6.38-inch super-AMOLED display is bright and vibrant, on par with more expensive smartphones. For comparison - Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus.

I understand that comparing from a photograph is a dubious task, but even from it you can see that the V17 Neo has a warmer picture, but the colors are richer and more “correct” in the S10+. But the difference in price between smartphones is 40 thousand rubles.

The display occupies 90% of the screen area, and the small drop-shaped cutout for the front camera looks neater than on the same iPhone. Actually, all the Chinese, plus or minus, have learned to make such a cutout, which is good news.

In addition to just a clear and cool picture, a fingerprint scanner is built into the screen. In some reviews, there is an opinion that the finger scanner is inconveniently located. I didn’t think so, it was convenient to use.

It's nice that the in-screen scanner is beautifully illuminated.

The best scenario is to use a fingerprint scanner and a face scanner together. The Face ID analogue works well, but it still gets confused in low light or an awkward angle. A couple of times he didn’t recognize my face when he was asleep. Maybe it's just me.

In general, you shouldn’t rely on the face scanner alone; it’s better to use both. Then the phone will unlock very quickly.

You can use your smartphone using gestures or navigation buttons. For now, gadget manufacturers provide such a choice, but very soon we will all be using gestures, so we are already using them and getting used to them. Fortunately, there are no hesitations during control.

The downside of the smartphone is micro-usb. This is the very compromise that the company made in order to reduce the cost. Be that as it may, in 2019 it’s simply a shame to have such a connector.

Vivo claims that there is a fast charging function, but it was not possible to test this - the V17 Neo arrived to me without a box.

The mini-jack is still here, and Vivo XE100 headphones are included with the smartphone. The smartphone came to me without headphones, but judging by the reviews, they are not bad. But the very fact that they still included headphones with the budget smartphone is encouraging.

There is only one speaker, the sound is bad, although I didn’t expect anything else. After the stereo speakers on my other devices, even just watching YouTube videos is not very pleasant.

Vivo V9 interface

The manufacturer has developed its own shell called Funtouch OS 4.0, which is based on Android 8.1. Since the release of Vivo V7, it has changed a lot, and for the better. All applications are located on the desktop; there is no separate menu for them. You can also place any widgets here, so that, for example, you can see weather information. Swiping down from top to bottom brings up the notification shade, but you won’t see any function switches there. Unlike other Android phones, they open with a swipe from bottom to top.

The settings menu provides many useful functions, including intelligent ones. For example, many will appreciate the function, when activated, calls and messages will be accompanied by quiet music if the Vivo V9 smartphone is in your hands. And when you pick it up from the table, the display turns on automatically and you see the lock screen. This is especially convenient if Face Unlock is enabled. Then you need to pick it up once it is ready to go. Among the features that I have not seen anywhere else is a motorcycle mode in which the phone analyzes the speed of movement and rejects all calls and messages while driving. They will be available immediately after stopping, which makes movement safer.

Software

Funtouch OS 4.0 is an add-on for Android 8.1 Oreo, developed specifically for Vivo smartphones. It is all inspired by and similar to the design and interface of iOS. This approach to the appearance of the operating system is a logical continuation of the line set by the smartphone body.

Since the Vivo V7, the operating system has received an update, and with it a security patch from March 2020, but the unusual menu and tongue-tied localization remain.

Vivo V9 has more advanced features than any smartphone from the company. Let's list the most interesting ones:

  • Game mode that blocks incoming calls and allows you to communicate via instant messengers in a pop-up window, without interrupting the gameplay.
  • Lock apps, allowing you to protect them with a password different from the one used to unlock your smartphone, or rely on fingerprint sensor and facial recognition.
  • Motorcycle mode that blocks incoming calls if the speed is more than 10 km/h.

The strangest feature of Funtouch OS 4.0 is the split-screen mode. Formally, it works the same way as it does in regular Android 8.1, but only with individual applications. It is unclear what causes this limitation, since standard Android Oreo displays almost all applications on half the screen, including many games.

Wireless communications

The Vivo V9 phone contains a built-in Wi-Fi module that is capable of operating at a frequency of 2.4 and 5 GHz. There is Bluetooth 4.2, domestic LTE frequencies are supported. But the saving factor is noticeable even at this point - there is no NFC chip, but in vain, because now contactless payment is available in almost every store and it is very convenient. Considering the cost of the device, this can be considered a huge disadvantage, since most competitors have NFC. GPS and GLONASS are used for terrain navigation. A review of the Vivo V9 phone showed that the initial connection takes about 30 seconds, and then it happens almost instantly.

Vivo V9 autonomy

Under the body there is a battery with a capacity of 3260 mAh, so one charge is confidently enough until the end of the day even with fairly active use, but in the evening the Vivo V9 smartphone will definitely need to be charged. When playing video at 50% brightness, the autonomy lasted for 12 hours, and in games the battery ran out in 4.5 hours. The results are average on the market; in critical cases, you can enable the power saving mode, which reduces processor power and kills all background processes. This significantly improves the battery life of the Vivo V9.

Camera overview

The camera is one of the main features of the Vivo V9; the manufacturer understood how big a role it plays in a modern phone. Moreover, the emphasis is on the front camera, so it’s better to start by considering its capabilities. Its high resolution is immediately surprising - 24 megapixels, but that’s not all, because the camera’s functionality is perfectly complemented by intelligent modes. But autofocus would be nice; it’s sorely lacking here. The quality of the pictures would be much better with it. The f/2.0 aperture is also not a strong point; therefore, photo quality will deteriorate greatly in low light.

AI Face Beauty is a facial beautification mode, the list of tasks of which includes eliminating skin imperfections - light unshavenness, pimples and wrinkles are removed, making you look more beautiful in the photo. But in reality, the pictures turn out unnatural, so standard frames look much better. But here it’s up to you to decide what’s more important.

AI Selfie Lighting is a mode that is used in low light conditions. When it is active, the display is illuminated at maximum brightness, allowing it to be used instead of the flash.

AR Stickers are original animated stickers that come to life in your photos. These can be various objects, funny ears, bows, glasses and much more.

When reviewing the Vivo V9 camera, one cannot help but note the AI Bokeh - the background blur effect and I must say, it turns out to be of high quality even despite the presence of a single camera module. But the algorithms do not always work correctly; sometimes the edges of the subject itself are blurred.

Selfies come out with good detail and natural color reproduction, even if you don’t use additional modes.

The main camera is double and is represented by a 16 megapixel and 5 megapixel module. An additional camera is needed only for the Bokeh effect; the smartphone does not have 2x zoom or wide-angle shooting. The image quality is good, but far behind the level of flagships. During the day we get juicy pictures with good detail rendering. There are no noises. The same goes for indoor shooting. But as soon as lighting conditions worsen, the quality of the photo drops. Noise appears on them, sharpness is lost, and many frames turn out blurry.

Example photo on Vivo V9

When shooting on Vivo V9 in HDR Auto mode, we get a picture with a wide dynamic range. The difference is especially noticeable in cloudy weather; HDR corrects the image well.

No HDR

With HDR

Panoramas are distinguished by neat stitching and good detail.

Video is recorded in a maximum resolution of 4K, but sometimes autofocus fails. Every now and then he loses the subject, which is why he has to manually aim again by tapping on the display. There is no electronic or optical stabilization, so hand shaking is clearly visible in the video. Because of this, it is better not to shoot while moving.

]

Conclusion

Vivo V9 is a decent smartphone for its price, which will be better in some ways, but also worse in some ways than its competitors. Among its advantages are the cameras, especially the front camera, which can take very high-quality photos. The battery life didn’t disappoint either; you can forget about recharging until the evening. A high-quality and large screen allows you to enjoy your favorite films, but it is not without its drawbacks. Among them is the lack of an NFC chip, which many competitors have. Also disappointing is the use of an outdated MicroUSB port and the lack of at least electronic stabilization when shooting video.

It seems to have a lot of disadvantages, but for most users the purchase will be justified, because otherwise it is an excellent phone. It is perfect for those who are looking for a stylish phone with good cameras and an edge-to-edge screen.

Advantages:

  • A frameless screen that occupies 90% of the front panel area. We left only a small indentation at the bottom for a comfortable grip on the case;
  • Excellent front camera;
  • Convenient shell with advanced functionality and artificial intelligence system;
  • Separate slot for MicroSD;
  • Good performance and autonomy.

Flaws:

  • The body is made of plastic;
  • No NFC chip and camera stabilization;
  • Poor quality of night photos;
  • MicroUSB

Vivo V7 review

Vivo V11 review

⇡#Camera

Either the most reputable (Samsung Galaxy S9), or the most stubborn (Sony Xperia XZ2), or the most desperate can afford to release a smartphone with a single camera module in 2020. But the developers of Vivo V9 do not belong to any of these categories. Here “everything is like with people.”

In this case, in fact, we are dealing with just one main camera: 16 megapixels, ƒ/2.0 aperture, the matrix size is not specified anywhere. The second, 5-megapixel module only collects information for a more correct application of software background blur, in the manner of, for example, the ZTE Blade V8.

Examples of shooting on Vivo V9 using software background blur

This very blur has received its name here - “AI Bokeh”. Vivo couldn’t do without mentioning artificial intelligence – fashion dictates its own rules. In fact, neural networks hardly take part in manually controlled background blur (virtual aperture range is from ƒ/0.95 to ƒ/16), but the system works, to its credit, great. The separation of plans is very high quality, but only when shooting objects in a medium or relatively long shot - for example, a regular or full-length portrait. I do not recommend shooting macro when using AI Bokeh.

Vivo V9 Camera Interface

Vivo V9 can also take “live photos”, shooting short videos “surrounding” the photo, there is an automatic HDR stitching mode (by default the “auto” mode is activated - the smartphone itself decides when to do HDR and when not necessary) and panoramas, a special a mode for shooting documents and a strange mode for photographing in Ultra HD resolution. The application interface as a whole is quite clear and simple - apart from the same problems with fonts that are characteristic of the entire shell as a whole (somewhere everything is written in lowercase letters, somewhere in capital letters), everything is at a normal level. There is also a “professional” mode, in which you can independently set some of the shooting parameters.

The Vivo V9 camera allows you to get very good pictures in terms of color reproduction and detail, but, alas, it regularly misses the mark with white balance, shifting colors even in simple situations towards the green spectrum, does not shine at all with dynamic range, does not offer any zoom option and lacks an optical stabilizer . The latter, together with a lens with mediocre aperture, reduces the camera's capabilities in the dark to a minimum. She is not completely helpless, but it is very difficult to get an unblurred picture, and, alas, impossible to get a detailed one.

Video recording with 4K resolution (frequency – 30 frames per second) and slow-motion video shooting are available.

On the left is a selfie in normal mode, on the right is with the background blurred and the “beautifier” turned on.

Vivo positions the front camera as a key competitive advantage of the V9. It uses a 24-megapixel sensor and a lens with an ƒ/2.0 aperture. The numbers are very good, and in reality the camera is quite decent. Yes, there is a lack of autofocus, but the fixed focus is set at the correct distance - in most cases you will get a selfie with the necessary sharpness in front of your eyes, and not your nose or somewhere behind your back.
