New products and announcements of future fitness trackers and smart watches are regularly released.

One of the most anticipated sports gadgets is the Samsung Gear Fit 3 Pro fitness bracelet.

The new product should please all fans of the brand and lovers of an active lifestyle.

In this article we will look at all the latest information about the Gear Fit 3 sports tracker, its design and characteristics, and when to expect the announcement.

Analysis of relevance will help you decide on the choice of fitness bracelet.

What is known about the new product from Samsung

In August 2020, the international publication PhoneArena reported that Samsung was preparing to very soon present a new sports gadget - a modern fitness bracelet. The source of this information was a special mailing list intended for members of the SmartLab Plus program.

The device had to have the most compact body and a large list of technical capabilities, convenient personalization and a high class of protection against dust, dirt and liquids.

Based on the listed characteristics, it was concluded that a new tracker will be released soon. The presentation of the third version of the bracelet should become a natural continuation of the Gear Fit line. The information is also confirmed by built-in algorithms for calculating calories and tracking the owner’s weight. The new Samsung bracelet has passed all the necessary certification with the participation of the Federal Communications Commission in the USA.

Note! According to the manufacturer, the presentation of Gear Fit 3 was supposed to take place on August 23, 2020 in New York (during the announcement of the flagship smartphone Galaxy Note 8). Other experts suggested that the bracelet would be presented a little later - at the major exhibition IFA 2020 in Germany (Berlin), which will last from September 1 to 6.

However, the release of the new product was postponed indefinitely, and company representatives did not comment on the release of Gear Fit 3.

The bracelet was supposed to become a “golden mean” between popular fitness bracelets and more expensive smart watches. Such a gadget can be worn without taking it off (24 hours a day), and the range of tracker capabilities is much wider than the usual collection and analysis of data on sports activity.

The price range of the new device remains a mystery. Serious investments in the powerful Tizen operating system (which became the basis of the Gear Fit 2) made this line not only functional, but also quite expensive compared to competitors on the market. However, the high price of the gadget does not reduce its advantages and only fuels interest from buyers.

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro review: fitness bracelet now also for swimming

The Korean company presented its flagship smartphone Samsung Galaxy Note8 even before IFA 2020, but this does not mean that there was nothing to see at the exhibition. In addition to new TVs, monitors, and smart home appliances, Samsung also brought an updated line of Gear gadgets for sports. The Samsung Gear IconX (2018) wireless headphones and the Gear Sport waterproof smartwatch have not yet reached our editorial office, but we have already gotten a little acquainted with the Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro fitness bracelet.

What is it and how is it different from Samsung Gear Fit2?

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro is a smart bracelet with a 1.5-inch curved Super AMOLED display (432×216 pixels), dual-core Samsung Exynos processor for wearable electronics, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of internal memory, GPS/Glonass module, heart rate sensor and a barometer. Runs on Tizen OS and allows you to download applications and watch faces from the company store. One of the main features is water resistance: Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro can withstand pressure up to 5 atmospheres, which is equivalent to immersion to a depth of 50 meters, so you can fully swim in it. Moreover, Samsung has started working with Speedo and the bracelet comes pre-installed with the appropriate proprietary software, which allows you to track speed, distance, heart rate and the number of strokes while swimming. Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro is a more advanced version of the previous Samsung Gear Fit2 and has a higher protection class. The fitness bracelet is also MIL-STD-810G certified. Otherwise, the characteristics remained the same, only the body became slightly larger. Of course, in addition to many fitness functions, the Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro can receive notifications from a smartphone, it is possible to send quick replies to messages directly from the bracelet and use it as a music player (of course, together with a Bluetooth headset).

What's included?

The gadget is packaged in a relatively small box made of black cardboard with colorful printing. There was nothing unusual in the kit, the set was standard: the Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro itself, a charging dock with a permanent cable and a set of instructions/warranties:

What about the appearance, design and screen?

If you've seen the Samsung Gear Fit2, then the look and design of the Gear Fit2 Pro will be familiar to you; it really isn't much different from the previous generation. The dimensions have increased just a little (I think that you might not notice this “by eye”), which is due to more serious water protection. Almost the entire body is made of plastic. The screen smoothly blends into the curves of the body. Unlike the previous model, the Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro is only available in black and black-red variants (at least for now). Almost the entire front panel is occupied by a 1.5-inch curved SuperAMOLED touchscreen display with third-generation Gorilla protective glass. It has a good reserve of brightness and the information is perfectly readable even in bright sunlight. There is an Always on Display function, although, of course, it will significantly reduce battery life:

There are two mechanical buttons on the right side: “back” - the top one, larger and “home” - respectively, the bottom one. There is a small hole just below. This is not a microphone, as one might think, but a barometer hole:

On the bottom of the case there are contacts for charging the bracelet and an optical heart rate monitor. The strap latches are similar to the previous generation; it can be replaced, but, apparently, only with a branded one (I haven’t come across any third-party ones):

Traditionally, straps come in different sizes to suit different hands. The black version comes with a striped strap, while the black and red version will have a geometric pattern. The clasp is now of a standard design, like on a wristwatch. The strap itself is comfortable, although I didn’t quite understand what kind of outer film it was that began to peel off from it:

As already written above, Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro is not afraid of immersion in water. Formally, to a depth of 50 meters. So, theoretically, you can swim not only in the pool, but also in the lake/sea and with scuba gear within reasonable limits (there are no contraindications in this regard on the official website). For this, there is a special mode in which the touch screen is disabled, the gesture wake-up function, and so on. The bracelet simply continues to track activity, swimming is recognized automatically:

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro is light and compact, it is comfortable to wear, and its streamlined shape without sharp corners allows the bracelet not to cling to clothing. With build quality and appearance, of course, everything is in perfect order.

What about the hardware?

As already written, the bracelet is equipped with a 1.5-inch curved SuperAMOLED touchscreen display with a resolution of 432×216, which corresponds to a pixel density of 310.7. The screen is bright, with typical AMOLED rich colors and good sensitivity. The Always On Display function is supported; the clock is displayed on the screen with reduced brightness. The gadget is powered by a 1 GHz dual-core Exynos 3250 processor and 512 MB of RAM. This is sufficient for the Tizen OS used. The built-in memory is 4 GB, it is possible to load a selection of music onto it and go for a run without a smartphone. At the same time, Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro will be used as a wireless player. Sensors and wireless modules include an accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, heart rate sensor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and GPS/Glonass.

What about the software and fitness features?

In fact, the Tizen OS already familiar to us from the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is used, only in a slightly stripped-down version. To fully work, as usual with Samsung wearable electronics, you need to install 4 applications: Samsung Gear, S Health, Gear S Plugin, Samsung Accessory Service. iOS support is promised in the near future. The Samsung Gear application allows you to view the current state of the watch (battery and memory), update its firmware, configure and change watch faces, set up notifications, install applications, transfer music, set up emergency calls, message templates, and find the gadget if it’s lost somewhere in the apartment:

All control is done using the touch screen and two hardware buttons “back” and “home”. The main screen of the bracelet displays the selected watch face and additional information about steps, calories, floors, and so on. On the left is a screen with notifications, on the right are screens with widgets. They can be sorted in the desired order, added and removed, but up to 8 pieces are supported. Swiping from top to bottom opens a panel with quick settings (brightness, turning off notifications, switching to “swimming” mode and switching to the player). There is a smartphone search function, a stopwatch and a timer. In the settings, you can adjust brightness, font size, vibration, power-on gesture, operation of wireless modules, or enable energy saving mode, in which only the main screen is displayed in monochrome mode:

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro can count steps and stairs (and set daily goals for yourself), and defines a number of standard exercises: squats, crunches, lunges, swimming, exercise bike, elliptical trainer, yoga and so on. The quantity and quality of sleep is monitored, and the built-in GPS module allows you to build routes even without a smartphone. Plus there are already popular third-party applications from Speedo and the popular Endomondo and Under Armor:

Of course, there is an optical heart rate sensor, there are different operating modes with periodic auto-detection. It demonstrates good accuracy of determination: at rest the error is usually only a few beats; during active training it is, of course, greater and can reach 5-7%, which is quite normal for fitness bracelets and smart watches. It was checked as follows: the pulse was measured simultaneously with the bracelet’s heart rate monitor and the old, “old-fashioned” method, using a stopwatch. You need maximum accuracy - chest heart rate monitors can help.

All data from the Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro about physical activity is transferred to the S Health application: the number of steps taken, floors, quantity and quality of sleep, and so on. You can track the dynamics over the entire time, readings from the heart rate monitor. Overall, the app hasn't changed much since the Gear S3 Frontier:

What about charging and battery?

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro is charged using a special dock; a standard USB plug is used for connection. While charging, the bracelet displays a corresponding icon or a clock with a charge amount indicator (if you press any button):

The battery has not increased compared to the previous generation: its capacity is 200 mAh. They promise 3 for “typical” use (of course, it is not specified what exactly is meant). In real conditions, the situation is worse: with the Always On Display function turned on, brightness slightly above average, constant connection via Bluetooth and constant notifications, automatic regular heart rate measurement, pedometer and so on, the Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro lasts a day, no more. If you turn off Always On Display, auto heart rate measurement, reduce the brightness and don’t use GPS and Wi-Fi at all, you can last up to 2 days. Still, I would like more.

Bottom line

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro is perhaps one of the most advanced and “stuffed” fitness bracelets at the moment: it is equipped with a bright curved AMOLED screen, all possible sports functions and necessary sensors, and can be used for training without a smartphone, including how audio player, has a simple, smart and intuitive interface with the ability to customize and install additional applications, plus convenient and functional companion applications. This is all packaged in a nice, lightweight and streamlined case, which is now resistant to immersion in water to a depth of 50 m, so it is completely suitable for swimming. Unfortunately, when using all the functionality, the bracelet will need to be charged at least once a day. The price tag is not the most affordable: according to information on the Internet, in Europe it will be 230 euros.

Key features of Gear Fit 3 and differences from the second generation

The new bracelet for fitness and active lifestyle from Samsung will receive a whole list of modern functions and desired characteristics.

Gear Fit 3 options Description
Appearance The device is small in size and has a standard set of interchangeable straps in different colors. When purchasing a new item, you will not need to additionally order replacement bracelets.
Screen Bright color display with touch control support. The third version should have increased resolution and screen brightness for convenient use in daylight.
CPU An updated and more powerful version of the processor (compared to the second generation of trackers) based on the Tizen operating system.
Battery Improved energy saving parameters due to battery and software improvements. Since Gear Fit 2 users often complained about low battery life, this point will be decisive when purchasing a tracker in the new version.
Memory Increasing the internal memory capacity for storing statistical data, which will lead to greater independence from connecting to a smartphone. The bracelet can also be used as an MP3 player when synchronized with wireless headphones.
Housing protection High standard of protection against water, dust, pollution (at least IP 68). The new tracker from Samsung can be left on when going to the shower or swimming pool. When the official application is finalized, the tracker will be able to analyze swimming classes and help in drawing up an optimal training plan.
Modules
  1. Built-in Wi-Fi, which makes this new product a budget analogue of a smartwatch with an emphasis on fitness and an active lifestyle.
  2. Support for Bluetooth module with version no less than 5.0 for correct and fast interaction with flagship smartphones.
  3. Availability of GPS and GLONASS navigation modules for correct tracking of distance traveled.
Possibilities
  1. Monitoring sleep, physical activity, tracking weight dynamics, generating useful recommendations for training and specific exercises.
  2. Synchronization of notifications and calls from your smartphone, the ability to reject an incoming call.

Note! The third generation of the bracelet will be a logical continuation of the second. Many functions will be improved and expanded by the developers, operational problems will be fixed and battery life will be increased.

Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro review. Fitness watch

Fitness bracelets are much more popular than their close relatives - smart watches. Not least of all, this is influenced by the cost of these devices, because the former are much cheaper. For example, fitness bracelets from Chinese manufacturers, including well-known ones, often cost no more than protective glass for a smartphone. But the hero of this review is a completely different beast. The average retail price for the Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro is $200. Expensive? Undoubtedly! Smart watches from Xiaomi cost almost half the price. But don't rush to conclusions.

Specifications

Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro is built on a dual-core processor with a frequency of up to 1 GHz, and is also equipped with 512 MB of RAM and built-in storage with a capacity of 4 GB. This set is more than enough for smooth and fast operation of the interface of a fitness bracelet running Tizen OS. Of course, there is a heart rate monitor, a gyroscope, a barometer and an accelerometer. Bluetooth 4.2 and WiFi 802.11 b/g/n modules (2.4 GHz band) are responsible for communication. The presence of a GPS/GLONASS module allows you to do without a companion smartphone when recording tracks while jogging, which is extremely convenient. The battery capacity is 200 mAh.

Appearance, display and usability

The change in weight and size characteristics relative to the previous model, Samsung Gear Fit 2, is completely insignificant. The dimensions of the device without a strap are 51.3 * 25.0 mm, and the weight is only 33 grams. The slight change in dimensions is explained by the fact that the device under test is protected against water ingress according to the ISO 22810-2010 standard. Diving is possible to a depth of up to 50 meters. The case is even resistant to salt water, but after use the bracelet must be rinsed in fresh water, which is a standard recommendation for most wearable waterproof devices. However, the dimensions and weight of the device are still small, and unlike smart watches, you don’t want to take them off at night (and if you have restless sleep, then it’s better to take the weighty watch off your hand so as not to harm, at least, yourself).

The bracelet is equipped with a 1.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 432x216 pixels and support for the Always on Display function. The brightness of the display is quite sufficient even when direct sunlight falls on it. But in such conditions, it is still better to choose the most contrasting dials and themes. And there are a lot of them in the application store, both paid and free, and there are a lot of pre-installed themes - 14 pieces. In addition, you can activate the “outdoor” function, which activates the maximum backlight level for 5 minutes.

The display, like the entire body, turned out to be unexpectedly durable and resistant to scratches. The Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro was tested during the active stage of renovation in an apartment. And not a light cosmetic one, but a major one involving work that may not have the best effect on the performance of the device. But even in such difficult operating conditions, the tested fitness bracelet turned out to be nothing. Its performance was not affected by swimming in a gypsum plaster solution, accidental impacts on abrasive surfaces, or even a fall from a three-meter height onto a concrete floor (the belt clasp is classic and reliable, but it was not fully tightened before the fall). Of course, at first there were concerns about scratches on the screen, but, as practice has shown, in order to put a mark on the screen you still need to try. But dust collects on the rubber strap at an incredible speed and is extremely difficult to remove.

The bracelet is controlled using a touch screen and a pair of keys. Swiping down the screen brings up a curtain with icons for adjusting the display brightness, activating the “do not disturb” mode, launching the music player and turning on the swimming mode, in which the touch display is turned off. The latter function should also be used if you are caught in the rain, otherwise accidental presses are possible when the screen comes into contact with wet clothes. Swiping to the right opens a list of notifications received from the smartphone. Swiping left scrolls through widgets of installed applications. The order and number of widgets can be adjusted to your taste.

In progress

During initial setup, the operating system strongly suggests installing additional software on your smartphone. You won’t be able to ignore this requirement, because otherwise you won’t be able to connect the bracelet with your smartphone. The list of installed software is standard for Samsung wearable devices - Gear S Plugin, Samsung Accessory Service and Samsung Gear and S Health.

S Health app

In the main application, Samsung Gear, you can view information about the battery charge, approximate battery life under the current load, as well as information about the status of RAM and ROM. In addition, this application allows you to install additional new dials (themes) and additional software.

In the settings of the Samsung Gear application, you can configure application notifications, send music to the bracelet’s memory, and set up emergency alerts (sending the coordinates of your location to “emergency numbers” from the phone book). There is also a “find my gear” function, the activation of which makes the bracelet vibrate, making it easier to find. In addition, you can set up quick replies to incoming messages and replies to rejected calls. This function, combined with the ability to answer/reject an incoming call using a bracelet, as well as read SMS, instant messenger messages and social network notifications, allows you to use your smartphone extremely rarely, making do with only a fitness bracelet and a headset. In general, everything is like in a full-fledged smartwatch.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

There are few pre-installed applications in the bracelet, but they are all useful. This includes music, a daily activity log, setting up exercise modes, a pedometer, counting floors climbed, a pulse meter, programs for monitoring water and coffee drinks, a timer, a stopwatch, a calendar synchronized with a smartphone, as well as an application for viewing the weather forecast, data about which can be obtained both via a smartphone and when connected to a WiFi router.

During training, one of the most important tools is a heart rate monitor. If it fits well to the hand, its readings are quite accurate. Of course, it is not suitable for professional athletes, but for the average user its capabilities will be more than enough. In addition to the function of measuring heart rate directly during training, the bracelet can check your heart rate throughout the day. The measurement interval can be adjusted very conditionally - always, often and never. When setting continuous metering, the battery charge is consumed noticeably faster.

The pedometer works almost flawlessly and does not miss a single step. In addition to this, while jogging or walking quickly, the bracelet periodically encourages you with messages or informs you about the completion of the activity plan planned for the day. Unfortunately, in the automatic mode of determining the type of load when driving in a car on our roads, which are not always of high quality, the bracelet sometimes begins to count steps. This effect is especially common when driving at low speeds.

The function of counting floors passed is no longer designed to count floors directly, but rather to calculate height differences, and takes a rise of 3 meters as a floor. As already noted, testing of the bracelet was carried out during renovations in the apartment, and the bracelet helped collect interesting statistics. For example, it was funny to learn that 36 formal floors had to be overcome to install wiring under the ceiling in one room, and when cleaning after renovation in a typical apartment, 11.6 km were walked in a day. There is little benefit from this, but there is a “wow” effect.

The bracelet also helps track the number of cups of water and coffee you drink, as well as count the number of calories consumed. But to do this, you need to manually enter the volume and type of food and liquids consumed, which is not always convenient, so this function will be useful only to those users who are very responsible about their health. But the sleep phase detection function works automatically. Sleep statistics can be viewed both on the bracelet screen and in the S Health application on your smartphone.

There are very few third-party applications, and most of them require additional accessories like smart sneakers or chest-mounted heart rate monitors and external blood pressure monitors.

Music

Listening to music or audio books is possible with a Bluetooth headset, and you can listen to tracks from a smartphone, using the bracelet as a remote control, or from the device’s memory. The list of supported formats is quite standard - MP3, M4A, 3GA, AAC, OGG, OGA, WAV, WMA, AMR, AWB. A 4 GB storage device cannot be used entirely for music, because only 2 GB is available for the user’s needs, where you still need to fit installed software and themes, as well as collected activity statistics. The test subject does not have a built-in speaker or microphone.

Autonomous operation and charging

The battery is charged using a special docking station with magnetic fixation of the device being charged. Thanks to the presence of 4 contacts on the charger, when installing the fitness bracelet, you do not have to monitor its position. Unfortunately, the USB cable is not removable, so replacing it with any third-party one, as in the case of the docking station included with the Samsung Gear S3, will not work. But there are also advantages - the process of charging a completely discharged battery takes only 1 hour. You can monitor the charge both using the display and via your smartphone. The only bad thing is that upon completion of the charging process there is no light or sound indication either on the device itself or on the smartphone, so you can simply forget about the bracelet. Because of this feature, the tested Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro often remained on charge all night, which made it difficult to collect sleep phase statistics.

You have to charge the bracelet often. With an average display brightness level, a constant connection with a smartphone, an activated navigation module and frequent automatic heart rate measurement, the operating system persistently asks to activate the energy saving mode after 19-21 hours of operation. If you do not follow this advice, then after 23 hours the battery charge will be completely depleted. These indicators do not at all correspond to the stated duration of 3-4 days. During a long-term test, the maximum battery life was 2.5 days. But to achieve this result, I had to dim the display brightness, disable the Always on Display function, the navigation module, and also turn on the screen when receiving notifications from the smartphone. But in this mode of operation, the fitness bracelet is not much different from its more affordable analogues. In general, from a subjective point of view, it is better to activate all functions, but do not forget to charge the bracelet every day.

Conclusion

Despite its high price, the Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro left a very positive impression. I’ll say more, I simply didn’t want to part with it after testing was completed. Of course, the Samsung Gear S3 watch is more suitable for a business suit, and in both versions, but in all other situations the capabilities of the tested bracelet are quite sufficient. For complete satisfaction, the only thing missing is an NFC module for calculations in terminals that support near-field communication technology.

Pros: – weight and size indicators; – durable waterproof housing; – excellent display with support for the Always on Display function; – availability of Bluetooth and WiFi modules; – smooth operation of the interface.

Cons: – battery life; - high price.

Is the release of a new version relevant?

The listed characteristics of the new product have been known in the online community since mid-2020. After 2 years, such a device will still be relevant and in demand on the market. Key advantages compared to other 2018-2019 models:

  1. Moisture protection. In today's electronics market, only a few fitness bracelets can boast the water protection necessary for swimming. Other models will only withstand hand washing or rain, or a short shower at most (for example, budget Xiaomi Mi 1 and 2). In combination with a redesigned app and the ability to turn on swimming mode (with detailed activity analysis), the Gear Fit 3 will rightfully occupy its niche.
  2. Wi-Fi standard. This module is typical for smart watch models, not budget trackers. This function significantly expands the capabilities of the device and reduces dependence on the smartphone.
  3. Modified battery. The big problem with modern trackers with color screens is the short period of battery life (maximum 3-5 days after recharging). At the same time, bracelets with a monochrome screen (Xiaomi Mi Band 3) work for up to 30 days. The presentation of a tracker with a color display and great autonomy will cause great resonance and interest among consumers.

    Photo from Yandex.Market

The software component of the new bracelet should be corrected and improved: problems specific to the Gear Fit Pro 2 bracelet have been eliminated.

In 2020, the release of Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Fit e was announced: perhaps these are variations of Gear Fit 3

At the beginning of 2020, the Samsung brand introduced the world to new fitness bracelets Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Fit E. These gadgets became a technical continuation of the second generation of sports trackers for training and an active lifestyle.

For this reason, many experts and journalists call them variations of the Gear Fit 3, which should have gone on sale 1.5 years ago.

The presented bracelets have high protection against water (5 ATM), so you can safely swim in the pool with the tracker. The bracelets automatically track activity during walking, running at various speeds, cycling, rowing, strength training and dynamic training in the gym. This gadget allows you to choose any of the 90 types of exercises presented within the Samsung Health application.

The Galaxy Fit bracelet is equipped with a color display with AMOLED technology, approximately 0.95 inches diagonal and a total resolution of 120x240 pixels. The Fit E model is positioned as a more budget option with a black and white PMOLED screen, about 0.74 inches diagonal and a total resolution of 64x128 pixels. Both versions have a heart rate sensor and an accelerometer, while the Galaxy Fit has a gyroscope.

In Russia, the cost of the Galaxy Fit and Fit E models will be about 100 and 50 dollars, respectively. The start of sales is scheduled for April 2020. The bracelets will be presented in several bright shades.

Main conclusions

Announcements of new models of fitness trackers and smart watches cause a particular stir in the electronics market. One of the most anticipated new products in recent years has been the Samsung Gear Fit Pro 3 tracker. Estimated characteristics of the model:

  • high degree of moisture protection and the ability to fully monitor swimming lessons;
  • availability of modern versions of GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth for convenient data tracking and synchronization with your phone;
  • an improved version of the battery compared to the second generation of Samsung bracelets, and increased autonomy.

The brand does not comment on the date of presentation and market entry of this model. However, at the beginning of 2020, 2 types of fitness bracelets were announced - experts consider them variations of the Fit 3 tracker.
