Bluboo S3 – 8500mAh capacity under the beautiful appearance

In 2020, it became fashionable to release smartphones with increased battery capacity, which is so lacking in modern flagships. The main difficulty is to strike a balance between practicality and battery capacity, because the larger it is, the more massive the device will be in the end. That is why on the modern mobile phone market there are not many “long-livers” that can go for a long time without recharging. One of them was Bluboo S3 - a model with an affordable price tag, good technical characteristics and, most importantly, an 8500 mAh battery.

We are offered a phone with a 6-inch IPS matrix with FullHD+ resolution, a USB-C port, NFC for contactless payments and 64 GB of internal memory. The characteristics are pleasantly surprising, especially the presence of NFC, which is still a rare guest in budget devices and is found mainly in flagships. Well, let's conduct a full review of Bluboo S3 in Russian and see how good it is in real use.

Bluboo S3 equipment

The Bluboo S3 package includes a silicone bumper, protective glass, a USB Type-C cable, a network adapter with support for fast charging technology (5V/3A), an adapter for 3.5 mm headphones, and another adapter, but for using the phone as an external battery for charging other devices. The latter has three different outputs at the ends, which makes it universal - USB Type-C, micro-USB and Lightning.

Bluboo S3 price and competitors

The smartphone is being actively promoted by the manufacturer and there are now good discounts on it on various Chinese online trading platforms. The average cost of the device is $170, but with a promotion it can be purchased for $119, or 7,300 rubles at the current exchange rate. The price is “delicious”, you can take a smartphone, especially since sending orders to customers has already begun.

Considering the characteristics and cost, the Bluboo S3 has a lot of competitors among entry-level and mid-level devices. If you look for analogues with a large battery, the search range will narrow significantly.

Oukitel K6 - it has a better processor - Mediatek Helio P23, more memory (6 GB), but a smaller battery - 6300 mAh. The rest of the characteristics of the smartphones are similar. Oukitel K6 costs several thousand rubles more.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has less memory, but the battery is decent, as is the quality of the cameras.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X - 4100 mAh battery, stylish metal case and 3 GB of RAM. The screen is smaller than the S3, and the built-in storage is only 16 GB.

Bluboo S3 design

When starting to get acquainted with the Bluboo S3, it’s worth saying right away that it is not suitable for those who value practicality and elegance. The design turned out to be very brutal and rather resembles a block of impressive size, equipped with a 6-inch screen and a battery with a phenomenal capacity. The assembly material is textured plastic - the optimal choice for this category of devices.

Of course, it is not so tactilely pleasant, but you need to look at it from the other side - if you used more premium glass or metal, the case would turn out to be even heavier. In addition, glass, which has become one of the main trends of 2020, will break if dropped. The side frames are made of metal, which adds rigidity to the body. The screen occupies 78% of the front panel. It is full-size and has minimal frames around the perimeter, which adds to its beauty and practicality.

The space above the screen is occupied by a large recess, where the speaker mesh, front camera, sensors and an LED indicator are built in, notifying about missed events in a certain color.

A dual main camera lens, a flash, a fingerprint scanner and a corporate logo were installed at the back. A review of the Bluboo S3 phone showed that the fingerprint scanner works quickly, but does not always recognize the owner the first time. In such cases, you have to unlock the screen using a password or pattern. There is no face unlock function yet, but the manufacturer promises to add it in the next update.

The left side of the case is occupied by the power button and volume rocker.

The space on the right is empty.

Below we see a USB-C connector, a speaker and a microphone, symmetrically located on either side of it. Alas, there was no room on the case for a 3.5 mm jack, so wired headphones can only be connected via an adapter.

The review of Bluboo S3 in Russian showed not the best ergonomics, which is to be expected from a smartphone with an 8500 mAh battery. It will be almost impossible to operate it with one hand - the large diagonal of the display and the massiveness of the body constantly remind you of themselves. The smartphone turned out to be thick and heavy, it was created with a clear emphasis on autonomy, rather than on beauty and convenience. The build quality of the case is not satisfactory, and the textured surface prevents the device from slipping out of your hands.

The phone comes in a black box made of thick cardboard:

In the box on top there is a phone, framed by a soft protective bumper, under the phone there is a box with accessories (Type-C adapter -> 3.5mm jack, a paper clip, protective glass, waste paper, a silicone case), and under it are the rest of the accessories (charging, meter cable Type-C, USB A -> Micro USB + Type-C + Lightning cable, USB A -> Type-C adapter)

The Russian distributor also includes a completed warranty card:

Silicone case, black, soft, glossy inside...

... and matte on the outside, with a soft-touch coating:

This is what the phone looks like in the case:

There was a transport film on the phone screen, under which a protective film was glued:

Complete charger with Euro plug and Bluboo logo:

Outputs up to 12V/2A:

Type-C -> 3.5mm jack adapter, USB-A 3.0 -> Type-C adapter and paper clip for removing the tray:

You can install either 2 nano SIM format SIM cards, or one SIM card and one microSD memory card (up to 256GB):

Since the phone has a large battery and can quite logically serve as a power bank, the manufacturer decided to include a USB-A -> microUSB / Type-C / Lightning multi-cable for charging various devices. The phone outputs up to 5V/1A, although my test showed that it can output up to 1.2A.

The included USB-A (2.0) -> Type-C cable is 1m long:

Since the manufacturer does not include a headset with the phone, the Russian store includes the following Bluetooth headset as a gift with each smartphone:

Appearance

The phone comes in two variants - black or gold. Both colorways look beautiful, each in their own way. I have the gold option. On the front side there is a large 6-inch SHARP display with FHD+ resolution (1080x2160) with rounded corners.

Above the screen, from left to right, there are proximity and light sensors, an earpiece, a two-color LED indicator that is invisible when not lit, and a front camera.

The indicator lights up red while charging, green when the charge level reaches 90% and flashes red when the charge is too low and green when there are missed calls, messages and other notifications.

The phone is framed by a metal frame, which also serves as a heatsink, since the smartphone gets quite hot while charging. The frame on the left and right is slightly narrower than on the top and bottom, which makes the design of the device even more interesting, and the round shapes of the sides improve the grip.

The top end is empty, and on the bottom end in the middle there is a USB Type-C port, to the left of which a rather loud speaker is hidden behind the grille, and to the right is a microphone.

On the right side there is only a tray for SIM cards and memory cards:

On the left side there is a volume rocker and a power/lock button:

The reverse side has a texture that is pleasant to the touch. Looks very cool.

Almost in the center there is the inscription BLUBOO:

Closer to the top end there are dual camera lenses (21+5MP), a dual LED flash and a fingerprint scanner, which, by the way, works very, very quickly:

Maximum viewing angles of the screen:

Pixels cannot be seen with the naked eye:

The rounded corners of the screen fit very harmoniously into the overall design and complement it.

Software and hardware

The phone comes with Android 7.0 Nougat, although the manufacturer promises an update to Android 8.1 Oreo. Immediately after the first turn on, a minor update arrived, which I did not install yet.

The translation into Russian is done quite well, although some sections of the settings are not translated and even contain errors in the English text :)

Out of the box, approximately 600MB of memory is occupied:

Device Info HW displays the following information about the phone:

Touch for 5 touch points:

Performance in Antutu and Geekbench tests:

Graphics tests in 3Dmark:

NFS No Limits and Asphalt 8 sometimes experience slight stuttering, but it's extremely rare. In general, it plays without problems or interference.

The GPS module also supports the Glonass system. Cold start - 30s. The number of satellites on the balcony, under a metal canopy is at least 20. NFC supports contactless payment. Bluboo S3 also supports WiFi calling if your operator supports:

The settings have several useful and not so useful functions, for example, “screen assistant”, which adds a button to the screen, clicking on which brings up a dial with navigation buttons and a lock button. There is also a TouchLetters section with three subsections:

In the first one, you can enable the launch of functions for drawing a letter on the screen in standby mode. In the second - saving a screenshot by swiping with three fingers from top to bottom and locking by double-clicking the Home button, and in the third - activating picking up the phone by shaking the phone and a couple more unnecessary features:

The phone supports all Russian 2G/3G/4G bands and even more - the full list of supported frequencies is listed above in the specifications. Voice and video transmission over 4G is also supported - VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and ViLTE (Video over LTE):

Battery

Bluboo S3 is equipped with a large lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 8500 mAh, size 886392:

The phone and included charger support Pump Express 3.0 fast charging. I discharged the phone until it turned off and charged it by connecting it via the Ruideng UM25C USB tester. Charging starts at 5V, then quickly moves to 7V, 9V and continues at 12V (12V/1.7A). When the CC stage of battery charging ends, the phone switches to 5V/1.05A. The threshold charging shutdown current is 0.33A, after which a weak current of 0.095A continues to be supplied.

A full charge lasts 4 hours 4 minutes, and during this time the metal frame at the top gets quite hot. I measured 50°C at the volume rocker.

With active use with the screen at maximum brightness and WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth turned on, the phone lasts 3 full days.

In the PCMark Work 2.0 battery life test, the battery showed 11 hours 28 minutes, in LAB501 Battery Life in continuous video mode - 870 minutes, and in 3D mode - 680 minutes. All tests were carried out at maximum screen brightness.

Cameras

The main (rear) camera has an interpolated resolution of 21MP from the native 16MP and has a 5MP secondary sensor to create a bokeh effect, which here actually just blurs the edges. Focusing is fast, but not lightning fast. The front camera is 13 megapixels and is only suitable for video calls, since its color reproduction is so-so. Below are examples of photos from the main camera with 100% crops from the frame.

Conclusion

I really liked the Bluboo S3 with its design, comfortable grip and thickness - I’m not a fan of “ultra-thin pads that you can’t feel at all,” but design is a subjective thing. And so, the pros and cons that I would like to note: First, the pros: + large battery + USB Type-C connector + a large number of 4G bands and VoLTE/ViLTE support + power bank function + metal frame

And now - the cons: - performance - maximum display brightness could be higher - interpolation of the main camera - why chase megapixels? — heating during charging — lack of a 3.5mm headset jack and the headset itself in the kit

If the store corrects the last minus by sending a wireless headset as a gift, then you will have to put up with the rest.

Bluboo S3 display

The Bluboo S3 4 64GB has a 6-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 2160x1080 and an aspect ratio of 18:9. The display is covered by tempered glass with rounded edges, the surface of which is coated with a high-quality oleophobic coating. Thanks to this, the finger glides easily and leaves virtually no fingerprints.

The screen stands out for its best quality within its price category and class of devices, providing natural color reproduction, sufficient brightness and extreme viewing angles. Colors are only slightly distorted at extreme tilts.

Using MiraVision software, you can customize the picture to your liking or use one of several color profiles that you like best. Up to 5 simultaneous touches are supported.

BLUBOO S3 or why a large battery is not always good...

The number of people who naively believe that if they buy a thick, brick-shaped smartphone with a huge battery, they will get great autonomy is not decreasing.
At one time, I made a separate comparison on this topic with visual tests of autonomy, but people keep asking in the comments on the channel to review some new monster with a large battery and, as a rule, an ancient processor. Well, then today I will publish a short review of the Bluboo S3 with an 8500 mAh battery. EQUIPMENT

To begin with, I want to show that the Bluboo S3 comes with this cable, with which the manufacturer hints to the buyer that he bought not just a smartphone, but a real power bank that allows him to charge other devices from his smartphone:

And this is true, but most models with OTG support have this ability.

The rest of the kit is as follows: - charger with fast charging support, - USB-C cable, - USB-C to USB adapter, - protective film, - tray key, - rubber bumper, - USB-C to audio jack adapter, - user guide.

ERGONOMICS AND ASSEMBLY FEATURES

The smartphone is thick (13 mm), and its frame is made of metal, and in the end we get a heavy brick with a weight exceeding 280 g. Using such a “coffin” is uncomfortable, especially in the summer.

The cover is not removable, it is plastic, in the area of the camera it is loose and crunches when pressed.

DISPLAY

Here you can find fault with the display only on 2 points, and these shortcomings are typical for most smartphones from small Chinese brands: inflated minimum brightness and the absence of an oleophobic coating on the glass. The screen itself is 6-inch, FullHD+, multi-touch 5 touches, I have no questions about the picture quality.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE

The brain of the Bluboo S3 is the outdated MT6750T processor. I don’t see any point in using it in smartphones with price tags over $100. Now he is simply not competitive on all fronts. Yes, on the one hand, the MT6750 still provides the level of performance that will be enough for many of us. But the point here is different. Now there are many better inexpensive processors that do not heat up as much as the MT6750. The same goes for energy efficiency, which leaves much to be desired for this processor. The only hardware advantage of such models is a lot of memory: here we get 4 GB of RAM and a 64 GB drive. But let's not allow ourselves to be blinded by memory and return to the processor. Why are small manufacturers using these ancient chipsets? It's simple - the main task of companies like Bluboo is to make money in the short term. Such brands do not care about their future; they do not work on their reputation. The main thing is to get as much cash as possible while investing as little as possible.

This leads to the next disadvantage - crude and unfinished software. On the box we are promised that this is a smartphone with Android 8.1 OS. But this is a lie. Bluboo S3 runs on Android 7.0, and an update to 8 is promised only at the end of the summer, but there are no guarantees that these promises will be realized. But even the software we receive is absolutely not optimized. But we’ll talk about damp software later in the context of autonomy, and this will be the main topic of our conversation.

A LITTLE POSITIVE

Bluboo S3 became one of the few smartphones from the 3rd tier that received an NFC module and this was one of the reasons that this model ended up in my hands. To be honest, I thought that NFC would not be able to fully work with Google Pay here - I expected to see a warning about the lack of Google certification and all that. But no. Google Pay started up fine, it allows you to add a card, and judging by user reviews, wireless payment is absolutely working here. This is why I give it a plus.

CAMERAS

But where there is a plus, there is also a minus. As always, Bluboo screwed up the camera. At the same time, again we see throwing dust in the eyes - on the box the manufacturer proudly indicated the main camera at 21 MP. The real camera resolution is 16 MP - the S5K3P3 sensor from Samsung is used. Even with ideal lighting, the photos come out terrible - overexposure, flare, digital noise. I'm not even talking about indoor shots. Cheap optics coupled with slow autofocus discourage the desire to use the camera in this smartphone. The camera is here just for show. The second lens, of course, is fake and it does not affect anything. In video mode there is an electronic stub, but it does not help - the video quality, like the photo quality, is at a very low level.

AUTONOMY

Well, now the most important thing is what people buy these heavyweights for, what they present to us as the main feature - autonomy. Inside there is a solid 8500 mAh battery and people, seeing such numbers, hope to forget about the outlet. Let's look at the results of my test, which involves playing HD video over WiFi on Youtube with a medium screen backlight. The result is only 11 hours of work. Is it a lot or a little? For comparison: Xiaomi Redmi S2 with a battery capacity of only 3000 mAh, but with an energy-efficient Snapdragon 625 processor, gave 10 hours of playback in the same test. Mi MAX 2 with a 5300 mAh battery and the same 625th “dragon” gave 16 hours of operation. I'm not even talking about the Lenovo P2, which has a 5100 mAh battery, but in addition to an economical processor, it also has an energy-efficient AMOLED display and plays video for more than 20 hours - twice as long as the brick Bluboo S3. And at the same time, all of the above-mentioned smartphones have normal, sane dimensions and weight. In the Bluboo S3, the old, power-hungry processor negates all the benefits of a large battery.

But it's not just the processor. Let's return to the dampness of the software part. After 10.5 hours of my test, the charge indicator showed another 27% remaining. But all these percentages disappeared in literally half an hour and the smartphone turned off. That is, we have uneven charge consumption.

By the way, after disconnecting the smartphone, it was possible to start it only after half an hour of being on charge. Before this, he simply did not react to anything. In addition, I noticed that the smartphone consumes power unpredictably in standby mode: it can drain 2-3% overnight, or maybe 10-12%, and this is under exactly the same conditions - an active SIM card and WiFi turned on.

I hope everyone understood everything and the data and figures I provided allow you to draw the appropriate conclusions.

VIDEO REVIEW:

A new player has appeared on the market of “hardy” smartphones, Bluboo S3, with very attractive technical characteristics at a low price. In addition to an impressive 8500 mAh battery, the gadget has a six-inch widescreen display with Full HD+ resolution, a USB Type-C connector, an NFC module for contactless payment and 64 GB of internal memory. Read our review to see how the new product works and how long it holds a charge.

Performance

The characteristics of the Bluboo S3 are based on a weak Mediatek MTK6750T processor with 8 cores, 4 of which operate at frequencies up to 1 GHz and the same number up to 1.5 GHz. The Mali-T860 MP2 video chip is responsible for processing graphics in games. This is the weakest part of the smartphone, because such a filling can only ensure smooth operation of the interface, but not all games will run and only at low graphics settings.

Bluboo S3 testing in Antutu

But they didn’t skimp on the memory - 4 GB of RAM is complemented by 64 GB of internal memory, of which 56 GB remains available. The rest is taken up by the operating system and pre-installed software. To expand the memory, you can use microSD up to 128 GB. But not everything is so good here, because the slot is hybrid, so in this case you will have to give up the second SIM card.

The speed of the interface is sufficient, but noticeably inferior in comparison with flagships on Snapdragon processors. You can open a dozen tabs in the browser and easily switch between them, with multitasking in complete order.

In games, the Bluboo S3 black 4g performed poorly, delivering only 23 frames per second in PUBG. In this situation, it is impossible to play and you will not have any chance of seeing the coveted inscription “Victory instead of lunch”. The smartphone is clearly not created for games.

In Tanks everything is much better - you can comfortably play on minimum graphics with 44 fps. But it’s not worth trying to turn the settings to maximum, otherwise fps drops to 15-19.

The sound on the Bluboo S3 is quite high quality, although it lacks low frequencies. Its main advantage is its huge volume reserve, which will allow you to listen to music in the company of friends.

Bluboo S3 - how to buy it at a discount

Bluboo wouldn't be Bluboo if it didn't offer a good discount on its long-lasting smartphone. So the company decided to give up to $30 to all customers. That is, the figure of 199.99 dollars was magically transformed into 169.99 dollars - this is a great price for a luxury device, especially if we are talking about its autonomy.

Bluboo S3, 4/64Gb, +256Gb, 8500mAh, Mediatek MT6750T, with 8 Cortex-A53 cores, frequency from 1.0 to 1.5 GHz, at an attractive price:

  • Aliexpress.com
  • Coolicool.com

Wireless communications

You can install two Nano format SIM cards in the Bluboo S3 smartphone, which will operate in LTE frequencies, but in alternating mode. The operation of GPS and GLONASS is satisfactory - fast connection, no connection interruptions in cloudy weather. Wi-Fi works fine and receives a signal at a considerable distance from the router, but only the 2.4 GHz frequency is supported. There is Bluetooth 4th generation and FM radio. An important advantage of the Bluboo S3 was the NFC chip, which most representatives of the budget category do not have. Payment for purchases is made without difficulty.

Battery life of Bluboo S3

Bluboo S3 received an 8500 mAh battery. Testing confirmed the actual battery capacity and showed very impressive battery life results, in which the hero of our review has virtually no equal.

Playing FullHD video at 50% display brightness drained the battery in 20 hours, and an hour of playing PUBG consumed only 10% of the charge. Therefore, you can count on 10 hours of gaming. This would be a huge advantage if the characteristics allowed them to run at least on average graphics. Bluboo S3 is an excellent option for everyday use, because it copes well with all assigned tasks, but at the same time, unlike modern flagships, it can go without a power outlet for a long time.

With moderate use, you can expect 3-4 days of battery life. Moreover, if necessary, the smartphone itself can serve as an external battery, recharging other devices using the included adapter

The capacity is impressive, so it was impossible to do without fast charging technology. And it is there - Mediatek Pump Express 4.0, thanks to which the charging time of the Bluboo S3 phone is about 3 hours.

Bluboo S3 - price, where is it profitable to buy?

So, as of yesterday, the manufacturer launched a promotion that will last from April 18 to April 27. The first 999 customers will be able to get the device for just $149.99 along with gifts worth $50 (an OTG adapter, a headphone adapter, and a Type-C cable for charging other gadgets). Moreover, every day the first two random buyers will receive the device for free, and the first 10 will receive it for only $84.99 (at 20:00 (UTC +8)). Do not miss your chance! Also keep an eye on the company's other offers on the official Bluboo website .

Bluboo S3 camera review

The Bluboo S3 mobile phone uses a dual camera with a resolution of 21 and 5 megapixels. An additional sensor is required for photos with the Bokeh effect. But as the review showed, there is no real need for it. The additional sensor serves more as a decoration, and the edges in portrait mode are determined by software. Therefore, the blur effect is not always neat and often catches the edges of the central object, which should be the focus.

The camera app is simple and offers minimal features like HDR mode, panoramas, face beautification, manual ISO and white balance. You shouldn’t count too much on the photographic capabilities of the Bluboo S3, because it shoots no better than average. In addition, the result strongly depends on lighting conditions, because the 21 megapixel main sensor of the Samsung S5K3P3 has a weak f/2.0 aperture. During the day you can still get good shots with sufficient detail and natural reproduction of colors, but at night there is an abundance of noise in the photo.

If you turn on HDR, your photos will have a wider dynamic range.

The front camera is simple - only 5 megapixels. A suitable frame can only be taken with ideal lighting.

Panoramic photos are stitched together neatly.

Video is recorded in FullHD at 30 fps. The quality is average.

Conclusion

Bluboo S3 will be the best choice for those who value autonomy above all and do not have the opportunity to charge the gadget once again. It has everything you need for everyday use without restrictions - a high-quality screen, an optimal amount of memory, an NFC chip and a good processor. The most significant disadvantage is games in which you can’t count on high graphics. Many will appreciate the ability to use Bluboo S3 as an external battery to charge other gadgets, which is especially useful when traveling.

Advantages:

  • Widescreen display with minimal frames;
  • Optimal memory capacity;
  • Rich equipment;
  • There is NFC;
  • Excellent battery life thanks to the 8500 mAh battery.

Flaws:

  • No 3.5mm jack;
  • Weak gaming performance;
  • Mediocre cameras that are highly dependent on lighting conditions.

Camera

The camera's performance left an ambivalent impression. Those users who expect to see a dual main camera here with 21 megapixel and 5 megapixel sensors, as reported on the manufacturer’s website, will be disappointed. It uses only one module made by Samsung with a resolution of 16 megapixels, and the second one generally looks like a fake.

On the other hand, in good lighting, this camera allows you to take more or less tolerable pictures. But this requires a lot of effort: automatic focusing is slow and unstable, so you have to point your finger at the screen every time.

In any case, taking photos is not a feature that makes the Bluboo S3 worth buying. A smartphone is still suitable for quickly capturing documents or the surrounding environment, but it is not up to the task of taking artistic photographs. Moreover, this applies to both the main camera and the front one.
