Oppo Reno review: a unique phone with a pop-up camera

Xiaomi Mi 9T 6/64GB

You can't just pass by the Xiaomi Mi 9T, which uses a pop-up front camera. Thanks to this implementation, the 6.39-inch diagonal screen occupies almost the entire area of the front panel. By the way, the smartphone looks very unusual - thanks to the bright back cover.

This is not a flagship yet, but, as they say, almost, and it is relatively inexpensive. Xiaomi Mi 9T impresses with a powerful processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 + 6 GB of RAM), a powerful 4000 mAh battery, an excellent main triple camera, a gorgeous AMOLED display, and a fingerprint scanner built into the display.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.39 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2340×1080
  • Weight: 191 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 730
  • Memory capacity: 64 GB
  • RAM capacity: 6 GB
  • Battery capacity: 4000 mAh
  • Rear camera: triple 48/8/13 MP
  • Front camera: 20 MP
  • Memory card support: yes

Bottom line

Oppo Reno currently costs about 40 thousand rubles. I think that the price is adequate to the capabilities of the equipment! This is a smartphone in which I practically did not find any serious defects. There is a very well-functioning and at the same time convenient shell, an efficient battery and fast charging mode, as well as cameras that take high-quality photos. In addition, there is fast facial recognition, an on-screen fingerprint scanner, an NFC module and a headphone jack.

I also liked the pop-up front camera module, which looks unusual and attracts interest from others. It’s clear that this is the most vulnerable element, but if used correctly it should work without problems for several years. At least that's what the manufacturer claims.

You also have to admit that the Reno is a nice, svelte, cutting-edge device. Matte, slightly gradient glass, metal frames, no protruding cameras, subtle green markings and an almost bezel-less display make the device phenomenal.

Is it worth buying?

Yes! The Oppo Reno is an excellent piece of hardware that I can recommend with all my heart. Personally, I have so far put it on the list of the most interesting smartphones of 2020. What do you think about Reno? Would you buy it? I'm interested in your opinion in the comments!

  • The fast charging mode isn't as impressive as the Find X's.

OnePlus 7 Pro 8/256GB

OnePlus 7 was launched in two versions - regular and Pro. The latter is interesting to us because it received a retractable front camera.

OnePlus 7 Pro is one of the most powerful smartphones in the world, which has been proven more than once by various tests. By the way, a version with 12 GB of RAM is available for sale!

The display diagonal reaches 6.67 inches and it is, of course, AMOLED. The chip used is the most powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. Users note excellent cameras, very fast charging, a separate vibration mode switch, decent autonomy, and an unrealistic performance reserve.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.67 inches
  • Screen resolution: 3120×1440
  • Weight: 206 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
  • Memory capacity: 256 GB
  • RAM capacity: 8 GB
  • Battery capacity: 4000 mAh
  • Rear camera: triple 48/8/16 MP
  • Front camera: 16 MP
  • Memory card support: no

OnePlus 7T Pro 8/256GB

And this is an updated version of OnePlus 7 Pro, which received a barely noticeable T prefix. And this is logical, because the changes between smartphones are small.

The design is almost identical, the only difference is the new shades. The main changes are hidden inside: an even more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus chip, even faster charging, support for new modes in the main triple camera, including macro photography with a distance of only 2.5 cm, as well as support for night mode on the ultra-wide-angle module.

But the cost of the 7T Pro version is higher, which is logical.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.67 inches
  • Screen resolution: 3120×1440
  • Weight: 206 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus
  • Memory capacity: 256 GB
  • RAM capacity: 8 GB
  • Battery capacity: 4085 mAh
  • Rear camera: triple 48/8/16 MP
  • Front camera: 16 MP
  • Memory card support: no

Honor 9X 4/128GB

A fresh smartphone from Honor, which also received a retractable front camera. We recommend looking at the blue version - this is where the device looks the most interesting.

Honor 9X received a 6.59-inch matrix, the well-known HiSilicon Kirin 710 chipset, 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of main memory, a 4000 mAh battery with support for fast charging, NFC, and a fingerprint sensor on the back.

The rear camera is double, the resolution of the main module reaches 48 MP.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.59 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2340×1080
  • Weight: 197 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: HiSilicon Kirin 710
  • Memory capacity: 128 GB
  • RAM capacity: 4 GB
  • Battery capacity: 4000 mAh
  • Rear camera: dual 48/2 MP
  • Front camera: 16 MP
  • Memory card support: yes

Cameras

One of the most noticeable features of this smartphone is the front camera, which pops out of the body when you need to take a “selfie”. It looks quite unusual and a little funny. I’m sure fans of original and unusual details may like this, and those who cover webcams on laptops will be absolutely delighted.

The mechanism does look reliable, but its durability can only be verified by practice. Interestingly, when dropped, the camera should hide, but the smartphone reacts with a strong delay. I tried to release it onto the bed from a height of about one and a half meters, and before it touched the surface, the camera was still open, although the smartphone had already turned it off and showed a warning about the possible fall of the device. So such a smartphone will require more caution than others, because there is one more weak point.

The camera itself has a resolution of 16 MP. She takes good pictures even in not the most comfortable conditions. AI can greatly pull out saturation, but literally in one tap you can turn it off and get a picture with relatively natural shades. At the same time, the camera can “blur” the background.

The main camera unit consists of two sensors with a resolution of 16 and 2 MP. The second one is needed solely to help in portrait mode, so the smartphone has neither an optical zoom nor a super wide-angle camera, which is not so uncommon even in this price category.

On a sunny day or in a bright room, you can get good pictures. They will have enough detail and nice colors. AI can be left on, but then the image resolution will be a maximum of 8 MP (which is still enough for social networks and personal photos). This mode, although it will overplay the saturation a little, will not spoil the photo much (especially, as practice shows, picky users like this effect). In portrait mode, it can still be difficult to determine the exact boundaries of an object; not all flagships have been able to overcome this problem yet, so you shouldn’t demand more from the P Smart Z.

In the evening, you can use both automatic and the corresponding Night mode. The results are relatively good, but depending on the circumstances, all sorts of defects will still appear, and photographs need to be reviewed on the spot, because it is likely that the exposure will have to be set manually, the focus may miss a little, or many unnecessary artifacts will appear. And the street light will leave its yellowish imprint on the picture.

Automatic and Night mode:

The maximum possible video recording resolution is Full HD at 60 frames per second, but at this quality there is a problem with focusing. If you record video in Full HD at 30 FPS, there are no problems with focus (as can be seen in the example). The stabilization of the video is not ideal; there is a noticeable oversharp in the picture, but there are no strong overexposures and relatively natural colors. However, video recording has never been the strong point of such cameras.

The application also does not have any special differences from the manufacturer’s previous inexpensive models, and the logic for placing controls complies with general unspoken standards.

ITC.UA rating

Pros: Pleasant appearance; screen; Fingerprint's scanner; performance; NFC; good camera capabilities during the day; original solution with a front camera; autonomy

Cons: Case sensitive to damage; night photography

Conclusion: Nowadays even low-cost smartphones require a lot. Huawei P Smart Z will be suitable for those users who do not require flagship performance, but still pay attention to speed. At the same time, they don’t need “bells and whistles” with multiple cameras or replacing a full-fledged camera with a smartphone. The gadget will also be able to surprise with a retractable front camera, which is not so common yet, but at the same time helps to avoid a cutout in the screen. All this is covered with a very good design. The weak point of the device is the body, the dimensions of which are far from comfortable, and the materials used are quite easily damaged.

Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro 6/128GB

Essentially the same Mi 9T, but much cooler (and more expensive, of course).

Don't look for external differences, they simply aren't there. The exception is the cool new shade of white. But the processor is a real flagship, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, which in this version works together with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of ROM.

There are changes in the rear camera, but they are difficult to notice - instead of the main Sony IMX582 module, Sony IMX586 is used. Among the additional features, the Pro version can shoot video in 4K 60 frames per second versus 30 frames per second.

In general, an interesting analogue of the flagship Mi 9, but with a retractable camera.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.39 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2340×1080
  • Weight: 191 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2

  • Battery capacity: 4000 mAh
  • Rear camera: triple 48/8/13 MP

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 6/128GB

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has a slider body: slide the body halves apart to reveal the front camera. Yes, there is no automatic retractable mechanism here, but the process itself is extremely simple and even familiar.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is offered in several color shades, and these are discreet colors. The device turned out to be quite weighty - 218 g. It uses a 6.39-inch display with a high resolution of 2340x1080 pixels, an excellent dual main camera, the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip, 6 GB of RAM. There is not only fast charging, but also wireless.

The fingerprint sensor, as is fashionable, is located in the display.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.39 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2340×1080
  • Weight: 218 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 845
  • Memory capacity: 128 GB

Features of traveling cameras and list of sliders

In most devices, the pop-up camera is represented by a miniature, square module. Some manufacturers supplement it with various auxiliary functionality. For example, Vivo added an LED flash to the NEX 3 and X27 Pro models, and a second module to the V17 Pro.

In turn, in Xiaomi Mi 9T and 9T Pro the sliding block is backlit. And the Chinese Oppo, in some of its gadgets, has completely abandoned the retractable rectangle format, instead making a retractable “fin” with a camera and additional elements.

In Xiaomi Mi 9T and 9T Pro, the retractable camera also has an LED backlight. Xiaomi reports that the mechanism operates in less than a second. You can also set any sound for the camera to appear.

Finally, Asus and Samsung made unique flip-over camera blocks in the ZenFone 6 and Galaxy A80. This mechanism allows you to use the most powerful cameras not only on the back side, but also as front modules for selfies and other things.

Note that our short review did not include technological sliders, which, like smartphones with a retractable front camera, achieve framelessness due to the retractable part. Only it’s not a small block that moves there, but the entire back panel. The fashion for such sliders suddenly arose in 2020 and then almost ended. Let's note the key models:

  • Oppo Find X;
  • Honor Magic 2 and Magic 2 3D;

Honor Magic 2 and Magic 2 3D as an example of new generation sliders

  • Lenovo Z5 Pro and Z5 Pro GT;
  • Xiaomi Mi Mix 3.

All of them, interestingly, belong to the premium segment, so even in 2019-2020 their price tag may be an unpleasant surprise.

That's all we have for now. We will update this material, adding new smartphones and information.

Huawei P smart Z 4/64GB

In the class of inexpensive smartphones, retractable cameras are still rare, but they do occur - Huawei P smart Z is proof of this.

The smartphone has a fairly large display - 6.59 inches diagonal with a resolution of 2340x1080 pixels. It uses a 4000 mAh battery, a proprietary HiSilicon Kirin 710 processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a dual main camera. The fingerprint scanner is located on the back of the case.

The smartphone is inexpensive, so don’t expect miracles: the camera takes good pictures during the day, but not at dusk, and the back cover is made of plastic. Considering the price, this is more than ok.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.59 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2340×1080
  • Weight: 197 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: HiSilicon Kirin 710
  • Memory capacity: 64 GB
  • RAM capacity: 4 GB
  • Battery capacity: 4000 mAh
  • Rear camera: dual 16/2 MP
  • Front camera: 16 MP
  • Memory card support: yes

Equipment and first impressions

The set of accessories for Huawei P Smart Z is extremely simple: a charger with a removable cable, a paperclip, a headset and pieces of paper. There is no adapter for headphones (the smartphone is equipped with a standard jack) or a case. A protective film will be installed on the glass, which, given the size of the screen, will definitely not interfere (although the test sample did not have it).

During the initial setup, you should only pay attention to the instructions on the gestures of the fingerprint scanner (with its help you can call up the notification “curtain”, take a photo or scroll through pictures in the gallery). Otherwise, the setup is the same as other smartphones running Android OS.

Samsung Galaxy A80

Samsung decided to use an unusual solution: it made a retractable camera, and only one module is used - during the process of lifting the mechanism, the main camera module unfolds. At the same time, it was decided to abandon face unlocking - at the time of the smartphone’s release this function is not supported.

In addition to the large 6.7-inch screen, the Galaxy A80 received a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory, a 3700 mAh battery with support for fast charging, and NFC.

Users note the excellent appearance of the device, cool display, high system speed, and wonderful camera, especially when it comes to taking selfies.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.7 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2400×1080
  • Weight: 220 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 730
  • Memory capacity: 128 GB
  • RAM capacity: 8 GB
  • Battery capacity: 3700 mAh

Oppo Find X presented: spectacular, powerful and with a triple retractable camera

A week after the announcement of Vivo NEX, the Oppo Find X premiered today, another frameless new product from BBK Electronics. The similarity between these two models can be traced not only in the fact that they were created by “subsidiaries” of the same “parent” company, they have a similar concept and philosophy.

The manufacturer himself believes that this is a beautiful mobile phone, ahead of its time, a work of art, and that is why the Louvre was chosen as the place for its presentation. The new product is clad in glass panels with a 3D effect and is offered in 2 gradient colors: red and blue. The Oppo Find X's screen looks cool and is the future that smartphone makers are aiming for. The device has a “panoramic” 6.4-inch display curved along the edges, using an AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 2340x1080 pixels. As promised, 93.8% of the front surface is allocated for the screen.

Narrow side frames of 1.65 mm, a bottom margin of 3.4 mm, a thin top frame of 1.91 mm and the absence of a “monobrow” forced us to look for a solution with the location of a traditional speaker and selfie camera. The secret lies in the retractable block, which is hidden on the top edge of the device. When you launch the camera application, the hidden module takes only 0.5 seconds to “pop up”. For comparison, the Vivo NEX takes 0.8 seconds to raise the periscope. The trick of the Oppo Find X retractable unit is that it houses not only a front 25 MP camera, but also a dual main one with 16 MP + 20 MP sensors with f/2.0 aperture and LED flash, there is optical image stabilization and AI algorithms for scene recognition. The O-Face 3D facial scanning system is also located here, and the flagship does not have a fingerprint scanner, either a traditional one or a display one. To activate the 3D scanning function, the user just needs to swipe his finger across the display so that the camera module pops up and is ready to recognize the owner by face. The manufacturer stated that the chance of bypassing O-Face is 1:1000000 and is a very accurate form of user identification that can be used for contactless payments. The possibility of detailed scanning allows you to read facial expressions down to the smallest detail, and it is possible to transfer it to various masks - Omoji animoji.

The Snapdragon 845 with 8 GB of RAM is responsible for performance. The new product is available in two flash module versions - 128 GB or 256 GB. The smartphone offers a 3730 mAh battery with proprietary VOOC fast charging technology and 5 minutes of charging is enough to get 2 hours of call time. The Oppo Find X is powered by the Android 8.1 Oreo operating system with the ColorOS 5.1 shell (later updated to Android P), has a USB Type-C connector, supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5, the Google Assistant voice assistant, and offers an ultra-sensitive microphone that allows you to hear the user’s voice even in the noisiest environments.

Along with the standard variation, a premium version is presented - Oppo Find X Lamborghini Edition. It differs from the usual one in a textured black case with the logo of the automobile concern, yellow accessories, a 512 GB flash drive and support for Super VOCC fast charging (10V/5A), capable of charging a 3400 mAh battery in just 35 minutes. The flagship will go on sale in August at a mind-boggling price of 999 euros for the version with 256 GB of flash memory and 1,699 euros for the Lamborghini version.

OPPO Reno

The OPPO Reno smartphone also uses a retractable front camera, only the “island” has an unusual shape. It looks very interesting and unusual.

Other unusual solutions include frosted glass on the back of the case. Some might say that this solution is already used on the iPhone 11 Pro, but OPPO Reno appeared much earlier. Moreover, smartphones with a matte glass back cover have been produced before.

OPPO Reno received a dual main camera, the well-known Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chip, and a 6.4-inch display.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.4 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2340×1080
  • Weight: 185 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 710
  • Memory capacity: 256 GB
  • RAM capacity: 6 GB
  • Battery capacity: 3765 mAh
  • Rear camera: dual 48/5 MP
  • Front camera: 16 MP
  • Memory card support: no

Oppo Find X camera review

Smartphone cameras are not that bad and appear as soon as you enter the shooting application. The main one is represented by a dual module of 16 and 20 megapixels. You can get good footage with a wide dynamic range, natural color rendition and excellent detail. But while the shooting quality is on par with its price competitors, there is one design flaw - it takes too much time for the camera to slide out of the body and be ready to shoot. The mechanism opens almost instantly, but after that you still have to wait a few seconds to take a photo. This flaw needs to be corrected first, because imagine how many bright moments you can miss because of it.

Example photo on Oppo Find X

While reviewing the camera, I tested the portrait mode, which uses not only a dual camera, but also artificial intelligence, which allows you to clearly define boundaries and separate the subject from the background. The blur is nice and very neat, but the problem of overexposure remains.

As always, OPPO smartphones focus on the front camera. It has a resolution of 25 megapixels and perfectly conveys details. The only thing is that the natural skin tone slightly changes.

Conclusion

Oppo Find X 2020 is an excellent smartphone, if not for one thing - an inflated price tag, which makes it impossible to ignore its shortcomings. We are offered a unique design that looks very interesting, one of the most frameless displays on the market and a retractable camera design, as well as powerful hardware that can cope with any task. But at the same time, the interface is not the most convenient, there are no stereo speakers, wireless charging and a headphone jack. The OPPO Find X smartphone is well suited for tech geeks who want to be the first to get to know innovative technologies before they become mainstream.

Advantages:

  • Futuristic design;
  • Unique retractable camera mechanism;
  • Good performance, cameras and battery life;
  • A gorgeous 6.4-inch display that's a pleasure to work with.

Flaws:

  • There is no 3.5 mm jack and wireless charging;
  • Long preparation of the camera before shooting;
  • Interface;
  • Inflated price tag at the start of sales.

Where can I buy?

OPPO Reno 2 8/256GB

Before we had time to write about OPPO Reno, the second generation model arrived. And yes, the front camera extends just the same as before - this is cool and unusual.

What are the differences? Of course, the design has changed, although the continuity of generations is obvious, a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G processor has appeared, and the memory capacity in this version reaches 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of ROM. The screen diagonal has been slightly increased to 6.5 inches. The same can be said about battery capacity.

The rear camera now consists of 4 modules: main, wide-angle, telephoto, and portrait mode.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.5 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2400×1080
  • Weight: 189 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G
  • Memory capacity: 256 GB

ASUS Zenfone 6 ZS630KL

ASUS uses its own approach to a retractable camera: when you use the front camera, the rotating mechanism is activated and the main camera module appears in front of you, which you can use for selfies. Looks extremely interesting.

Other features? There are plenty of them: for example, a 6.4-inch display created using IPS technology (most manufacturers use AMOLED in their flagships), the presence of a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a fingerprint scanner on the back cover, a high power reserve thanks to the top Qualcomm Snapdragon chip 855, battery capacity is as much as 5000 mAh.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.4 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2340×1080
  • Weight: 190 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
  • Memory capacity: 128 GB
  • RAM capacity: 6 GB
  • Battery capacity: 5000 mAh
  • Rear camera: dual 48/13 MP
  • Front camera: dual 48/13 MP (rear module)

Smartphone display

The AMOLED display takes up most of the front space of the Reno, covering 93.1% of the panel. It is 6.4 inches in diameter and has a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels at 403 ppi. This results in highly crisp images displayed and no jagged fonts or jagged edges. The colors displayed are very vibrant and the viewing angles are wide.

The maximum brightness level is also good, ensuring comfortable use of the device even on a very sunny day. However, the minimum limit could be a little lower because when turning on the phone on a dark night, a blinding effect occurs.

What makes the Oppo Reno display stand out is the in-display fingerprint scanner. It is located in a convenient place - not too low and not high. The fingerprint recognition field is large enough for the sensor to read the finger correctly.

Vivo V15

Vivo V15 is in the mid-budget class. It has a retractable front camera, a triple main camera, a 6.53-inch display (AMOLED), a capacious 4000 mAh battery, and comes with a branded case.

Coming to the chip, it uses MediaTek Helio P70. The amount of RAM is 6 GB. Interestingly, a microUSB port is used.

  • Screen diagonal: 6.53 inches
  • Screen resolution: 2340×1080
  • Weight: 190 g
  • Number of SIM cards: 2
  • Processor: MediaTek Helio P70

Huawei will present three smartphones with a retractable camera

Reward accrued

This news was written by a site visitor and a reward was awarded for it.

The Chinese company Honor this summer announced the Honor 9X and Honor 9X Pro smartphones, each of which received a retractable front camera. The technology giant Huawei intends to present three similar phones, now under its own brand. These will be Huawei Y9s, Enjoy 10 and Enjoy 10 Plus models. The latter was spotted today in the database of local regulator TENAA.

Huawei Enjoy 10 Plus

Huawei Enjoy 10 Plus will be slightly larger than the Honor 9X Pro model. Dimensions will be 163.5 x 77.3 x 8.8 mm. The future new product will weigh a little less – 197 grams versus 208 grams. The smartphone will go on sale in blue, black and green colors. The front panel will have a 6.59-inch screen with Full HD+ resolution and an aspect ratio of 19.5 to 9.

If you believe information from the Chinese regulatory authority, the hardware platform will be built on the basis of a 12-nanometer mobile processor Kirin 710. Let us recall that Honor 9X Pro is equipped with a 7-nanometer single-chip Kirin 810 system. The amount of RAM will be 4/6/8 GB, and the built-in – 128 GB regardless of configuration. The smartphone is also credited with a 3900 mAh battery and proprietary EMUI 9.1 software based on the Android Pie operating system right out of the box.

Huawei Enjoy 10 Plus

Compared to the Honor 9X Pro, the most noticeable change will be the move of the fingerprint scanner from the right side to the rear panel, where it will join the triple main camera and LED flash. According to the data that has appeared, the retractable camera mechanism will work without problems for 3 years, when using the front camera 100 times a day.

Vivo Nex 3 8/128GB

A very interesting offer, which, although difficult to find on sale, is possible.

So, the retractable camera module turned out to be quite wide, and all because, along with a 16-megapixel camera, it has a flash. An Asahi Kasei Microdevices AK4377A audio chip is installed, which, according to reviews, produces excellent sound. By the way, there is a 3.5 mm jack, but there are no stereo speakers.

There is an excellent triple camera, as well as a very large 6.89-inch display without cutouts.

Dust

Dust accumulates in the area between the body and the front camera panel. It begins to scratch the body and break the structure.

How much damage does it do? Smartphones may become scratched after a year of use in a case. Precisely because dust accumulates in the case - even when stationary, it causes damage.
