Xiaomi Redmi 5 - Review of a narrow killer smartphone with a so-so camera

Model description

There were rumors that a new flagship was going to be released back in 2014. During this time, the manufacturer managed to update its smartphone lines and release a new tablet, but the long-awaited device remained forgotten. Its presentation took place in 2020, the company presented the Xiaomi Mi 5 smartphone to consumers. I would like to immediately note that the phone turned out to be very good, its appearance, characteristics, and filling attract attention. The long journey may have been due to the fact that the company wanted to release a mobile device that would be as iconic as the Mi 3 and Mi 4 smartphones in their time. Fans of the brand’s products have been waiting for a new product for a long time and it is only natural that they want to know more about the new device. A review about it will help you better understand the characteristics of the new flagship Xiaomi Mi 5.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 as a toy

There are no problems with games. Good (albeit not top-end) hardware, a lot of memory and a low screen resolution are a very reasonable combination for gamers.

Equipment

The smartphone is packed in a thick cardboard box, covered with a white film, on which is printed an image of the mobile device in color variations. The model name is written under the picture. In places that are already familiar to users - in the upper right corner and on the side end of the cover there is the Mi company logo.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 phone lies tightly in the box. In addition to this, it contains: documentation (manual in Chinese and warranty card), a universal USB Type-C cable that can work from either side, two-amp charging and a key for the slot.

Installing global firmware on Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus

Due to the fact that there are many questions about the firmware of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus , today we will try to talk in detail about how to do this in order to install the latest version of the global firmware, which contains Russian, without serious consequences for your smartphone language.

As we wrote earlier, you can flash the global version of the firmware only if the bootloader is unlocked.

Be careful with Redmi 5 (Plus) firmware!!!

We also covered the process of unlocking the bootloader, in sufficient detail, step by step, indicating possible pitfalls and other errors that may arise.

Unlocking the bootloader on Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus

We kindly ask you to start reading these instructions only after you have read the instructions for unlocking the bootloader and unlocked it. Otherwise, you won’t succeed and you risk getting a “brick”.

ABOUT FIRMWARE VERSIONS

At the time of writing the instructions, the current versions of global firmware are:

  • Redmi 5 - Version: V9.2.3.0.NDAMIEK (MIUI9)
  • Redmi 5 Plus - Version: V9.2.6.0.NEGMIEK (MIUI9)

It must be installed on the developer (weekly) Chinese version of the firmware*:

  • Redmi 5 - HM5_8.2.1_02eb02a539_7.1.zip
  • Redmi 5 Plus - HM5Plus_8.2.1_fda3c075e8_7.1.zip

* You should have installed this firmware version at the bootloader unlocking stage.

THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO INSTALL GLOBAL FIRMWARE

METHOD 1

Three-point installation.

Procedure:

1. If after 15 days of using your smartphone (while you were waiting for the bootloader to be unlocked) you have the necessary information in the device’s memory (documents, photos, music, etc.), then this information must be transferred to a computer, USB flash drive (via an OTG adapter ) or to a Micro-SD (SDHC) memory card. Basically anywhere.

When installing the global version of the firmware over the Chinese one, the system partition is formatted and all files are deleted.

2. Download the archive with the global firmware version for your smartphone model from the link above.

3. Go to “Settings” - “About phone” - “System update” * . Click on the “three dots” in the top right menu and select “Select firmware file” from the drop-down menu. Next, select the downloaded file and click “OK”. The process of checking and unpacking the archive will begin, after which the smartphone will reboot and installation of the new firmware version will begin.

Screenshot 3, 4

Screenshot 5.6

Screenshot 7

* Since you have (should have) the Chinese version of the firmware installed at this stage, the English language is most likely selected. In the English version of the firmware, this path looks like this: “Settings” - “My device” - “MIUI version”. After clicking the “three dots” - “Choose update package”. After selecting the firmware file - “Ok”.

1 of 3

Screenshot 1, 2

Screenshot 3, 4

Screenshot 5

If all conditions are met (developer firmware version, unlocked bootloader, correct global firmware version), after installing the firmware, the smartphone will reboot and the usual initial system setup window will appear.

There are situations when this update method does not work, in which case the second method will help you*.

* We recommend using the second method. It may involve a little more manipulation, but the guarantee that the firmware will be installed the first time is almost 100%. Also, TWRP provides many additional features. Read more about TWRP .

METHOD 2

Installation via custom recovery (TWRP)

Installing custom recovery:

— Download the archive for installing TWRP from the w3bsit3-dns.com website onto your PC (to download from the w3bsit3-dns.com website, you must be a registered user and first log in. Otherwise, you will receive the following error);

TWRP for Redmi 5 - TWRP_rosy.zip

TWRP for Redmi 5 Plus - twrp-3.2.1-vince.zip

— Unpack the archive to disk C:\; — We reboot the smartphone into Fastboot mode (turn on the smartphone by holding down the power button and the volume “-“ button at the same time, wait for the hare in the earflaps to appear).

— Connect the smartphone to the PC using a USB cable; — In the unpacked folder, run “Flash-TWRP.bat”; — A window will open, press any key on the keyboard; — The installation process will begin; — After installation is complete, the smartphone will reboot and enter TWRP.

2. Installing firmware via TWRP:

As with installation via “Three Points”, it is necessary to transfer the necessary information from the main memory of the smartphone in advance, because all information will be destroyed during formatting and subsequent installation.

— Go to the “Wipe” section. Check the boxes as in the right screenshot *

* If the downloaded firmware file is located in the internal memory of the smartphone (not on Micro-SD), then uncheck the “Internal Storage” checkbox.
If this is not done, the main partition of the smartphone will be formatted and all files will be deleted, including the firmware file. If you did “Wipe” with clearing “Internal Storage” (if not, then you can immediately go to the “Install” section and install the firmware, without rebooting the device), then before you start flashing the firmware, you first need to reboot your smartphone, otherwise we will get error. To do this, after the “Wipe” procedure, using the “back” arrow at the bottom of the screen, we return to the TWPR main menu and click “Reboot”, in the next “System” window.

The phone will restart and the download will stop at the MI icon. This is not surprising, the system partition is completely cleared, there are no system or any other files on it. Now we need to restart the smartphone and go to TWPR again. To do this, press and hold the smartphone’s power button and the volume “+” key for about 4 seconds. After the restart, when the MI icon appears, release the power button, while holding the volume “+” button until TWRP starts;

— Go to the “Install” section; — Using the “Select Storage” button, select the partition on which the downloaded firmware is located; — Select the firmware file; — Click “Install Image”;

— Swipe to the right to start the installation process; — After installation is complete, the smartphone will reboot.

The first system startup takes longer than usual. If after the reboot the MI icon appears and the dots “run” at the bottom, then everything is fine, just wait until the download is complete, after which we will see the standard initial setup window for the MIUI shell.

Once again, we remind you that you do all manipulations with your smartphone at your own peril and risk.

Our instructions are created only to simplify the process for you when performing this or that action, to avoid obvious mistakes that can lead to “bricking” your smartphone.

To be fair, it is worth noting that if you have unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP, then you are unlikely to be able to seriously harm your smartphone. An unlocked bootloader allows you to cure “bricks” by flashing the firmware using a computer. Even if you manage (this is really very difficult) to install some kind of “crooked” firmware, after installing which the smartphone will stop working, you can simply reboot into TWRP, format the system partition and then install any firmware that is known to work, be it the official firmware or third-party firmware.

So don’t be afraid to experiment (if you’re interested), but to make this process completely painless, make a backup of your firmware (using TWRP) before installing various patches, fixes, etc. With a backup, you can return to a fully configured and operational system in literally a matter of minutes.

We hope this instruction was useful to you. Leave comments. Ask questions if you are having difficulty solving a problem. We will definitely try to help you!

Design

The ergonomics and design of the phone are at the highest level. It is lightweight, with dimensions of 145x69x7.3 mm, weighs only 132 grams, and fits comfortably in the hand. The device is attractive in appearance and pleasant to the touch, despite the fact that the main materials for its manufacture are metal and glass, and does not slip. According to advanced users of Xiaomi Mi 5 (that’s what they call the products of this company among themselves), the Mi5 model is the golden mean of mobile devices of the Xiaomi brand.

There is no doubt that the design of the smartphone is very similar in appearance to the Samsung Galaxy 6/7 model. The side frame, made of metal, narrows at the sides, and widens towards the ends. The phone is equipped with glass panels on both sides; in the center below the display there is an oval-shaped mechanical button, it is exactly the same as on Korean devices. It has a built-in fingerprint scanner. It works clearly and detects a fingerprint almost instantly. Above the screen is the same set of elements: earpiece, sensors and front camera. The brand's logo is printed on the left side. Below the display are three main control buttons. One of them is a “home” mechanical type, the other 2 are sensory.

The volume control key and the button that turns the device on and off are located on the right side.

On the opposite side there is a card tray.

The hole for the microphone, infrared port and headset input are at the end of the top of the case.

At the opposite end there is a connector for the USB cable and a perforated speaker grille.

The main camera and flash are located at the top of the back of the case, with the company logo at the bottom center.

The assembly and quality of materials is excellent. The glass panels have a grease-repellent coating, so the smartphone practically does not get dirty. Fingerprints are difficult to see and can be easily removed.

Traditions cannot be changed: behind — Redmi

Xiaomi has an interesting smartphone. For example, the case was inherited from Redmi 4X: the central plate is made of metal, the inserts on the edges are plastic.

One of the major changes is the camera protruding a millimeter beyond the body. Only a cover can protect it - fortunately, there is a complete one.

Why so, Xiaomi? To once again play with numbers and reduce the thickness. Redmi 5 is noticeably thinner than its predecessors. This makes a big difference to the grip. The budget vehicle becomes as comfortable as a flagship. Even Mi Note 3 is thicker.

With the case, the thickness of Redmi 5 is the same as that of Redmi 4. Short fingers or do you like thinner ones? Take it off and enjoy.

Another plus: now your finger always hits the fingerprint scanner located under the camera. With previous Xiaomi budget phones, you constantly have to wipe the protective glass of the camera.

The controls are familiar - the volume rocker and the power button are on one side, the hybrid slot is on the second. Unfortunately, 3 connectors remained the lot of the ultra-cheap Redmi 5a.

The only speaker is still hidden behind one of the grilles at the bottom end, the IR scanner and the 3.5 mm port are at the top.

The decision to keep microUSB looks strange – but we’ll leave that up to the developers.

Display

The Xiaomi Mi 5 phone has a diagonal display of 5.15 inches, resolution – 1920x1080 pixels, dimensions – 114x64 mm. Compared to the Mi 4 and other competing models, its brightness is 30% higher. This is achieved through 16 LED backlights, while other devices have 12 or 14. This brightness is enough for the screen to show a clear, rich picture in bright sunlight. The minimum brightness is very low, the owner of the smartphone does not experience discomfort while working at night. Users can also take advantage of the reading mode feature, which noticeably reduces the blue glow effect. In the settings you can change the contrast and white balance. Protective glass protects the display from scratches, dirt, and dust. The Xiaomi Mi 5 screen is rightfully considered the best. Even with a strong desire to examine the pixels on it, nothing will work.

⇡#Camera

Another key difference from the Redmi Note 4X is the camera. Here again the “old-fashioned” single module is used, but with a different sensor: instead of the Sony IMX 258, this role is played by the OmniVision OV12A10. It is larger in size (1/2.8″ versus 1/3.06”) and at the same time slightly lower in resolution – 12 megapixels versus 13. This, in theory, should lead to better performance in the dark, even without taking other parameters into account. But another change comes into play - optical. The Redmi 5 Plus has a slower lens - f/2.2 versus f/2.0. Phase sensors located on the matrix are used as a focusing system.

The camera block protrudes slightly above the body - this may turn certain perfectionists away from the gadget, but there will be fewer accidental touches of the lens with a finger. You can always feel where the camera is and where the fingerprint scanner is.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus camera app interface

The application itself has not changed: the main icons are on the main screen, there are no illogical actions to be performed. At the same time, deeper settings are hidden on the third screen and lack the logic typical for mobile cameras. The resolution, for example, cannot be changed, but the default shooting quality is set to high, not normal, as has happened more than once in Xiaomi smartphones. It is not necessary to monitor this. HDR is not activated by default - you will have to do this yourself. There is a manual mode, but it does not have a lot of settings.

Despite a completely different sensor, the manufacturer of which may even scare someone - well, they say, this is not Sony, the camera works approximately the same as on the Redmi Note 4X. During the day, the smartphone allows you to take very decent pictures with rich, rich color reproduction, but without going overboard. Contour sharpness is at an acceptable level - here the progress compared to 4X is obvious. The dynamic range, to be honest, is far from ideal, but at least no less than in last year’s device. At night, Redmi 5 Plus is not really capable of anything - it lacks aperture ratio, optical stabilizer and software processing capabilities. Most often, the pictures are not too sharp or lack detail. However, in the twilight or indoors, with the proper skill (and, preferably, manual control of the settings), you can take frames of reasonable quality.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus: gallery

View all images (26)

But the smartphone can shoot video with 4K resolution at a maximum frequency of 30 frames per second. By default, however, the resolution is set to Full HD.

The selfie camera, at first glance, has not changed - 5 megapixels, no autofocus, the optics are wide enough to take normal self-portraits with a clearly visible background. But there was a flash. The second black circle near the light sensor on the front panel is it.

Performance

According to the performance test, the Xiaomi Mi 5 smartphone ranks first among the mobile devices of the Chinese brand. The device is powered by a 4-core Snapdragon 820 chipset with a frequency of up to 1.8 GHz. The phone has built-in UFC 2.0 flash memory, which is almost 90% faster than MMC 5.0 storage.

During games, the phone behaves incomparably. At maximum settings, it simply “flies”, coping well with complex games. The graphics frequency, thanks to the Adreno 530 processor, is also high and it practically does not drop below 60 frames per second. The phone does not get hotter under heavy loads than previous models. The speaker produces a loud, clear sound, but the device copes with everyday tasks with a bang.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 as a photo and video camera

Rear:12 MP, f/2.2, 1.25 µm, OmniVision OV12A10
Frontal:5 MP, FF, flash, f/2.0, 1.12 µm, OmniVision 5675i

You shouldn't expect miracles from the camera. But for a smartphone for such little money it’s still not bad. Especially in daylight. With an apartment-room situation, everything becomes sharply worse. Or, say, in the subway. Usually at stations I manage to get normal, not particularly blurry frames. But no, that's not the case.

On dark streets, sometimes you can take normal pictures, but only sometimes. Nevertheless, my favorite test “take a photo of the bus schedule at night” was successfully passed by the smartphone.

The camera performed well outdoors on a cloudy day. But the blue winter sky sometimes turns out, for my taste, a slightly wrong shade. HDR saves the day; with it, such pictures turn out great.

More photos

Another carriage and a small cart of photographs.

Frontal. Completely junk, unfortunately. Plus, for some reason, when switching to the front camera, the camera application regularly crashes. Resetting the application settings helps, but only temporarily. I had to install Open Camera.

Technical characteristics of Xiaomi Mi 5

The Xiaomi Mi 5 (unofficial name) runs on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system with proprietary, well-balanced MIUI 7 firmware. It does not have a separate menu for applications; they are all located in the desktop area. The phone has its own basic applications and a lot of different settings. It has excellent Security and a file manager installed. They protect the device from viruses, delete unnecessary files, blacklist unwanted contacts, and monitor the phone's energy consumption. The device supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and the operating speed corresponds to the flagship. The characteristics of Xiaomi Mi 5, for such a price, look very decent.

Camera

The Xiaomi Mi 5 smartphone has a main camera of 16 megapixels. It is equipped with a Sony IMX298 matrix. The quality of the photos is excellent. They turn out rich, bright with good natural color rendition, correct white balance and good exposure. In sufficient lighting, it works clearly and quickly, and autofocus is accurate. At night and in room lighting conditions, the quality of images decreases. In HDR mode, the shots come out decent; it’s not immediately clear what time of day the shooting was done.

The front camera has a resolution of 4 megapixels. It has an ultra-pixel module installed, thanks to which more details and light are captured when shooting. The camera is great for selfies.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 as a GPS navigator

The tracks are ideal in their evenness. Support of three main satellite constellations (GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou). Bright screen and good battery. The navigator from Redmi 5 is simply perfect, five plus.

  • 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory;
  • 4 GB RAM and 64 GB built-in.

Both versions have an old, but already proven eight-core Snapdragon 625 processor (Cortex A-53 cores at 2 GHz). The processor handles all daily tasks well. The graphics chip is Adreno 506. It’s enough for average toys, but you shouldn’t count on more. If you try to play heavy games, you will have to lower the settings to low-medium to avoid fps drops.

It is controlled by the public sector MIUI 9.0 shell on Android 7.1.2. The interface is smooth, works well, there are no glitches or bugs.

In general, there were quite a lot of problems with the firmware of this Note 5 Plus, since the phones entered the Russian market initially with the Chinese-English language. The global version was released, but it was impossible to update to it through three points. And the next day after its publication, it was completely removed from the official website, but folk craftsmen added and completed something, and it seems that now normal options with over-the-air updates are already on the market. But be prepared that difficulties may arise with the new update.

There are no complaints about the stability and speed of the phone.

Now let's talk briefly about the autonomy of the device. There is a 4000 mAh battery installed here. It will fully charge from 0 to 100% in approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. The device is enough for two days of active use. It's a pity that there is no fast charging, as it would be very useful here.
