Backing up certain data is a very common practice in the world of information technology, as it provides the necessary security and convenience, because there is always a chance of losing certain data. This type of backup file includes the .bup format, which is very actively used for copying various data.
Files of this format are created automatically; they are created if an application refuses to perform an operation or closes abnormally. Also, very often such a file is created if the original file is damaged. This practice allows you to always access important data, even if it is damaged.
There is also another type of this file, which is similar in properties to the one described above. This type is called DVD IFO file backup. It is used as a backup of .IFO files found on DVDs. The .IFO format files themselves are created to store various information about subtitles and tracks, and also determine the order in which video files are launched.
The .bup extension file in this case is the same size as the .IFO file and does not store video, in this case the video is just a special case of using the .bup format applicable to DVD discs, everything else is the same.
How to complete the discovery process?
This format is very easy to open; the easiest way is to double-click on the file of this extension itself. If the operating system itself does not decide which application to use to open it (this may happen if such an application is not installed), you should simply delete .bup in its name, and then the file will open without problems. There may also be a case when this format will be opened using a non-original program, in this case the problem lies in the association of files that can be changed in the Windows registry, this can happen when the operating system associates files incorrectly.
Consider the standard structure of a DVD disc
.
If you take any standard DVD, then when you open it, you will find two folders - AUDIO_TS
and
VIDEO_TS
.
Let's open the second folder VIDEO_TS. Inside there are various files with extensions BUP, IFO and VOB. What are these files?
IFOs are disk information files, they "know" what is in the VOB files and maintain the order in which they are launched.
BUP is a backup file for the IFO file (to be on the safe side). Please note that each IFO file has a corresponding BUP file of the same size.
VOB are the main DVD files that contain information about video, audio, and subtitles.
Look at the screenshot of a DVD opened in Total Commander to understand the different files and their extensions.
The first three files highlighted with a red frame are menu files. This means that files called VIDEO_TS (with the three extensions mentioned above) are responsible for the menu of your DVD.
The remaining three frames highlight three sections of the disk, the so-called chapters.
The movie itself can be determined by the size of the VOB files - these are VTS_03_1, VTS_03_2, VTS_03_3. You can see that each of them is more than 1 GB in size. This means that the third chapter is the main film.
Please note that each partition contains files with all three extensions - BUP, IFO and VOB.
Well, now let’s decide why we need information about the disk structure.
For example, you want to make an AVI video file (in other words, DVDrip) from your DVD to store it on your computer, or to reduce its size, or for some other reason.
You will need a video conversion program. By clicking on the link you can choose a program suitable for your purposes. I use CanopusProCoder most often.
In our case, after opening the converter, you need to specify the path to the VTS_03_0 file with the IFO extension. It is to this, and not to VOB files (of which there are three in our example), if you want to get the entire movie, and not a separate selected piece.
The VOB file can be selected during conversion if there is only one on your disk and is not linked to others. Let me remind you that the IFO file maintains the relationship between individual VOB files and the order in which they are launched.
If you need to make a DVD from AVI, we use the same converter, only in the opposite direction. In the article about conversion, I already described this process using Canopus ProCoder Wizard, you can take a look.
You don't need to think about creating BUP, IFO and VOB files, just “order” the encoder DVD as output video, and it will do everything automatically.
In the resulting folder with the finished film you will find all of the above files. If your movie is small, it will fit in one VOB file.
The most common cause of problems with opening the BUP file is simply the lack of appropriate applications installed on your computer. In this case, it is enough to find, download and install an application that serves files in the BUP format - such programs are available below.
Help
Clue
Please note that some encoded data from files that our computer does not read can sometimes be viewed in Notepad. In this way we will read fragments of text or numbers - It is worth checking whether this method also works in the case of BUP files.
What to do if the application from the list has already been installed?
Often an installed application should automatically associate with a BUP file. If this does not happen, then the BUP file can be successfully associated manually with the newly installed application. Simply right-click on the BUP file, and then from the available ones select the “Choose default program” option. Then you need to select the “View” option and find your favorite application. The entered changes must be approved using the “OK” option.

MacOS
Why can't I open the BUP file?
Problems with BUP files can also have other causes. Sometimes even installing software on your computer that supports BUP files will not solve the problem. The reason for the inability to open and work with the BUP file may also be:
Inappropriate associations of the BUP file in registry entries - corruption of the BUP file that we open - infection of the BUP file (viruses) - too little computer resource - irrelevant drivers - removal of the BUP extension from the Windows system registry - incomplete installation of a program that supports the BUP extension
Fixing these issues should result in you being able to open and work with BUP files freely. In case your computer still has problems with files, you need to take the help of an expert who will determine the exact cause.
My computer does not show file extensions, what should I do?
In standard Windows system settings, the computer user does not see the BUP file extension. This can be successfully changed in the settings. Just go to the “Control Panel” and select “View and Personalization”. Then you need to go to “Folder Options” and open “View”. In the “View” tab there is an option “Hide extensions of known file types” - you must select this option and confirm the operation by clicking the “OK” button. At this point, the extensions of all files, including BUP, should appear sorted by file name.

What else could cause problems with the file?
If the file does not open, first you need to configure its associations with the appropriate software. To do this, right-click on the BUP file, select “Open with”, and then from the list of available applications, select one of the ones described above. Before doing this, check the box “Always use for...” - this is necessary in order not to repeat this procedure again. If the file still does not open after this, it is most likely damaged. To check the file integrity, try downloading and installing another program from our list. If this does not help, you need to completely scan your computer for viruses and Trojans - if problems are found, you may need to completely reinstall Windows.
McAfee antivirus software
.
During the operation of this antivirus, virus-infected or suspicious files are selected and moved to a separate “ Quarantine
” directory. A temporary file placed in “quarantine” receives the BUP extension and then the user decides to delete or restore them. Therefore, if you happen to come across the BUP extension, be careful - the file may be infected with a virus.
Programs that open, create and edit BUP files
The BUP file is generated (created) automatically. When creating a backup file in an antivirus, it is in the process of scanning your disk space.
Only antivirus software or the program that created it can open the BUP extension. Such programs include:
These applications are guaranteed to open a file with the BUP extension, but they are not standard components of the Windows OS and require separate installation on the PC.
Converting BUP to other formats
Converting a BUP file to other data formats is not possible. This is due to the security policy and protection of the operating system. Please remember: the BUP extension carries a potential threat of infecting your PC.
Restoring a BUP file to its previous format
If translation of the BUP extension into another data format is not possible, then the McAfee
file recovery is provided. To do this, you need to use the integrated quarantine manager option. After recovery, the file from the “Quarantine” folder will be moved to its original location with the same extension.
It is important to understand: such manipulations may be unsafe for your PC and should be carried out with full confidence that the file being restored is not infected with a virus.
