This guide was written after experimenting with routers and consoles over the past seven years, since I had to set up connections for Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita, Apple TV, torrent clients, and so on. All the information was gleaned from a bunch of completely open sources, it is not new, but as usual, we decided to chew it all up and collect it in one place. Let's go in order.

Setting up a router for PSN: NAT

So, you have connected the PS4 to the router directly with a wire. Now you need to configure the router itself for proper data routing.

The first thing to do is to find the UPNP option in the WAN / LAN settings. In 90% of cases it is enabled by default, but suddenly you find yourself in that same 10%? So feel free to turn it on and move on.

Around the same place there may be an option about selecting the type of routing, so you need to enable UPNP, NAT-PMP, PCP.

It is quite possible that your router supports modern NAT acceleration methods. For example, Asus routers have this option, it’s worth turning it on. It’s called Accelerate NAT, where you need to ensure that offloading occurs on all fronts, that is, you should enable Offload TCP/UDP for LAN/WLAN. In addition, if there is an option “Not only to your IP”, then it also needs to be enabled.

Why do you need an account on PlayStation Network and how to create one?

To identify you as the account owner, you must create an account. In other matters, as in any other service or website. There is nothing complicated - you will only be required to provide an E-Mail, as well as other data that you will need to come up with and enter a nickname, for example, which your friends on PSN and other players will see while playing online. Creating an account for owners of PlayStation 4 and other Sony devices is completely free; paid functions, such as a PlayStation Plus subscription, are already “inside” and are paid separately; as you already understand, they are not mandatory.

The advantage of such a system is its versatility - among gamers there are many people who simultaneously have a previous generation console in their hands - a third PlayStation, a Vita for playing outside the home, as well as a PS4, because today it is one of the most promising consoles. That is, you can “sit” on the network simultaneously from all devices, or from any of them separately. The single PS Plus subscription is also pleasing - by purchasing it you will receive benefits on all your consoles, every month they give out “individual discounts” and free games, even if you receive one each on PS3, PS4 and PlayStation Vita, you will fully recoup the money spent.

Next, go to the WAN / LAN settings, there you need to find the DHCP section. It allows you to assign a specific IP address to a specific device within your local network. Find the PS4 there (or its MAC address, you can check it inside the PS4 itself in the network connection information) and assign it a static address like XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX, for example, 192.168.1.55 (if your router distributes via DHCP pool of addresses like 192.168.1.XXX).

The next step is usually optional, but would definitely be helpful. You need to find the DMZ (demilitarized zone) setting in the router and put the static IP address you just assigned to the PS4 there. Usually routers allow you to define only one IP address in the DMZ, I advise you to put the PS4 there.

This is one of the most important points in setup. You need to go to the WAN / LAN settings, find the option for port forwarding there. There you now need to do the following: to the just assigned static IP address of your PS4, register certain ports that will be redirected, bypassing processing inside the router.

So, we need the following ports: TCP 80, 443, 1935, 3478, 3479, 3480, 9295 UDP 3478, 3479, 9296, 9297, 9303

Ports 9xxx are needed for correct and correct operation of Remote Play over the Internet. The fact is that this function may just work fine for you, but there are no guarantees, as is usually the case with the PS4. But with these open ports, your chances improve!

How can I restore access to my account?

If you have forgotten or lost your password, do the following:

1. On the offsite, in the login panel, click the “Trouble Signing In?” link.

2. In the menu that opens, click “Change You Password”.

3. Enter your login (mail address). Click the “I’m not a robot” box and click “Continue”.

4. Go to e-mail, follow the link in the message from the site.

5. Answer the service security questions to confirm your rights to your account (indicate your date of birth, name, etc.).

6. Follow the instructions of the service, after verification is complete, enter a new password.

Setting up a router for PSN: DNS

Often many problems with PSN, including poor speed and inability to connect to group chats, can be solved by changing the DNS to others. Many people use their DNS provider, which they provide automatically, some use Google DNS. But if for some reason your provider is not working well, and its DNS periodically falls off or is updated slowly, then you should use a radical method. Install SkyDNS. Dima Zombak recommended it to me, it helped him solve many problems with PSN at once.

Just find the DNS setting in the WAN / LAN sections of the router and enter the address 193.58.251.251 there. SkyDNS updates its tables quite quickly, so your console will be able to move more efficiently from server to PSN server, without being limited to an outdated set of addresses that may already have disconnected servers.

Changing DNS Settings

You can use a more radical method - changing the DNS settings if the Internet on the PS4 is weak. This will improve the data transfer speed. To do this, you need to check the current DNS server, which is issued automatically by the provider. It is necessary to compare the response speed of this server with the 8.8.8.8 server using the ping utility. It may turn out that the server provided by the provider has a lower response speed in milliseconds than 8.8.8.8. In this case, you should resort to the following actions:

Find the settings icon that resembles a briefcase and click on it.
In the menu that appears, select Network, and then Set Up Internet Connection.
A tab will open in which you should select the type of connection: LAN or Wi-Fi. Then click on “Custom”.
Find the Manual option and select it.
After this, the DNS settings will be displayed. In the DNS field called Primery, type 8.8.8.8, and in the DNS Secondary field, enter 8.8.4.4.
In the OpenDNS - address - Primary field, enter 208.67.222.222, and in Secondary, type 208.67.220.220.
