Miranda I.M.

NYA!
This article is full of love and adoration. Perhaps we should add even more?

Naked Miranda. Oh, exploitable!

Miranda I.M.

- an Orthodox multi-protocol IM client, difficult to configure, but with many capabilities compared to other clients. In terms of distribution on the Russian Internet, it is much inferior to your QIP. In 2012, the developers valiantly divided themselves equally, as a result of which two parallel projects appeared, Miranda IM and Miranda NG.

[edit] Datasheet (technical information)

  • ' Target platform:
' win32/win64 (win9x, winNT), some compiled with winelib
  • ' Programming language:
' /C++ (core, basic plugins, most known plugins available)
  • Structure: modular:
kernel (win32 PE EXE) + plugins (DLL): database driver, protocols, contact list, input window, pop-ups, tooltips, etc. + DB for each user + covers + icons + third-party plugin resources.
  • Unicode support:
two separate distributions - ANSI and Unicode (UTF-16), some plugins use unicows.dll (relevant only for the IM version, in NG this fatal flaw has been removed, and support for ansi versions has been discontinued)
  • Distribution size:
    ~1.6MB
  • Migration utilities:
yes, import contacts/history from other clients (+3rd party plugins)
  • Requires additional libraries:
no (in new versions SSL is included in the distribution)
  • Subjective speed of work:
the situation is almost similar to Ognelis: pure Miranda works very quickly; stupidly hung with all sorts of plugins - it slows down a lot (and sometimes even hangs the system); with proper selection of the necessary plugins, the speed is at least normal.

[edit] Features

Miranda with all sorts of whistles and tricks in the style of a ruler.
Initially, it was developed as the most minimalistic multi-protocol client, but gradually acquired various whistles and tricks in the form of plug-ins, of which well over 9000 were written by various volunteers. Thus, from the basic distribution kit you can make both a tricycle and a jet fighter, a monster-like brake harvester with whistling tricks like the temperature of iron - the only question is the time spent on processing with a file. Although Miranda's assembly requires straight arms, British scientists have proven that even blondes can do it. In the worst case, you will end up with an unstable client that will be worse than ICQ2003b and ICQ5. However, assemblies of nerds also crash with an error from time to time.

Miranda settings, thousands of them! Miranda is something between Winamp and EMACS.

The abundance of settings is well emphasized by quote No. 399966 on the bash:

She: I installed Miranda and I understand it) He: Ooh, big deal) She: I think if you try, then judging by the settings, here Mona’s breasts will be enlarged)

Unlike many of its competitors, Miranda was developed on the principle of expanding functionality and maintaining minimalism in the GUI. This became the key to its speed and unpretentiousness.

Miranda professes a modular architecture - each function is responsible for its own type of plugins: Contact-list, database driver, message sessions, all sorts of “service plugins” such as adders of emoticons, themes, fonts, etc. Thanks to complete openness and freeness, it was written for the project a huge number of truly unique things: message encryptors, database drivers that allow you to store data only in RAM, a gigantic number of messaging protocols, all kinds of pop-ups, toolbars and other crap. You can also get a big profit if you have direct hands and a working brain - any coder can add what he is missing.

Miranda is popular among some red-eyes due to the fact that it is launched through a vaen. However, not even all the plugins from the standard package work, so assembling Miranda for Linux is a separate matter. But they almost didn’t try to port it on a full scale because meranda is not needed under Unixlikes. Not needed at all.

Flaws

Miranda IM messenger has several minor drawbacks that users who decide to install the application should be aware of. Most of the users using the program complain about its modest appearance. That being said, installing new plugins can seem daunting to beginners.

Despite the flexibility of settings, it will be difficult for beginners to understand the program. This is especially true for connecting additional ICQ or VKontakte entries. To cope with the task, you will have to read the help.

Initially, the application is installed in English. Users who do not speak languages will find it difficult to navigate the program. Over time, this disadvantage disappears.

[edit] Plugins

Everything is in a bunch.
The list of communication systems supported through plugins, along with IRC, Jabber[1], and ICQ, includes such redneck networks as VKontakte and Mail.ru Agent. Since there are so many plugins, it is possible to add everything to Miranda - from the ability to show pop-up windows and aggregate RSS feeds, to asymmetric encryption and built-in naval combat via the ICQ protocol. The passion for plugin descriptions reaches the point where you can send matan formulas over the bystander, which are no different in appearance from this $LaTeX$ of yours[2].

Since some plugins may be incompatible with each other, the process of “assembling” Miranda is quite a long process, so individual geeks do this, then distributing their assemblies, which completely kills the original “build it yourself” idea. The presence of Trojan plugins in some assemblies that steal ICQ numbers and other passwords is especially annoying.

If you, unfortunate one, decided to assemble your Miranda, then in order to create a combine that will satisfy all your needs (except for the one that requires a browser), it won’t hurt you to come up with a list of necessary and simply useful plugins. So:

  • The contact list itself. Clist_classic - cool, simple, almost uncustomizable. Clist_modern - support for skins (can be disabled, so the system theme is picked up with a bang), custom frames (panels, in other words) and a contact display mode that can be edited within the widest range. Clist_nicer is something in between, less customizable and skins are not supported.
  • Message window. Tabsrmm - supports skins, is customizable within the widest range: vertical tabs, for example. Scriver is a multi-tab minimalistic GUI without losing the main functionality and adding various tricks.
  • Protocols: well, everything is clear here. There are from the mentioned social networks to an RSS aggregator, not excluding, by the way, a weather plugin. To be more specific, there is an IcqOscar J Plus Mod, after which the standard icq.dll (also a feature, by the way) seems defective. On the other hand, the implementation of jabber for some reason does not require crutches and all sorts of mods.
  • Stopspam aka StopSpam mod is a standard question-and-answer antispam.
  • Authstate - authorization.
  • Startupstatus and keepstatus are useful things so you don’t have to swear and reach for the status panel every time.
  • Avs - working with avatars. Can be supplemented with flashavatars plugin.
  • langman is a handy tool for working with localizations.
  • Updater is so that each dll does not have to be updated manually. Sensitivity is adjusted (updated when a new build is released, a new minor release, a new major release, alpha/beta/night light).
  • Fingerprint and extraicons partially overlap each other's functionality, but together with clist_modern and tabsrmm they are extremely useful things. Display a variety of icons regarding the contact’s profile: from gender to Jabber activity. Here are also flags, which, oddly enough, display the flag of the country where the interlocutor is supposedly located.
  • Tipper YM - tooltips under the cursor. There are tons of settings.
  • Popup.dll - pop-up windows. The analogue is YAPP (Yet Another Popup Plugin). There is support for skins, and the customization in the latest version of the plugin has expanded greatly and become more kosher. Comes in a package with MtextcontrolW.dll (text rendering of the API's format in a more different one).
  • History++ is a plugin for viewing history. Can be used as a chat window, just like IEview, and add all sorts of beauties there (like what is in Kopete). Due to their heaviness, both cannot work with conferences, and it is recommended to use them with caution in chats. On the other hand, it is excellent as a history viewer thanks to the date tree, filter, etc.

In addition, there are a bunch of other plugins - from banal emoticons to mini-games.

Miranda IM 0.10.80 Final + x64 + Portable / Miranda NG 0.95.12

With this convenient development, you can instantly exchange messages with various other Internet users, running under the Windows operating system. The design and functionality in the standard are very simple and clear, but due to the fact that the program supports extensions with plugins, you can significantly expand both the design and functionality, but I am quite happy with the standard set, everything I need, and the interface is quite satisfactory, from our project in full news you can download Miranda IM

.

The program supports working with various protocols, which can also be expanded with add-ons, you can also download other language packs from the official website, inside the archive you will find Russian, you just need to copy it to the folder with Miranda IM installed. Some plugins will be able to keep detailed statistics on correspondence, keep third-party logs, you can increase the security of communication, you can also receive various reminders, like you can even play games remotely.

I would like to mention a plugin called SpamFilter, with its help you can block spam. You can ask a question and answer; if you answer incorrectly, you will not receive a message; you can completely block messages from contacts who are not on your list. If you want to hide your work behind Miranda IM, then there are modules for this, when used, all information, history and other files will be deleted.

In general, the great advantage of the messenger is the support for extensions by plugins.
There are also disadvantages, for example, many may not like the modest appearance of the program, the small number of features in the standard, in fact these are little things, because everything can be corrected, and the developers give us room for creativity. In general, there is nothing more to say about Miranda IM, I think the program will be useful to many. Developer

Among the advantages are low consumption of system resources and very fast operation. The website contains an assembly with plugins for working with the AIM, GG, ICQ, IRC, Jabber, MSN and Yahoo protocols; many others can be downloaded from the official website.

[edit] Notes

  1. At the same time, if ICQ Miranda functionally expands, then the jabber in it becomes extremely flawed. The initially flexible and expandable jabber within the narrow framework of the proposed plugins becomes worse than the same ICQ5. Same song from IRC
  2. Of course, both players must have Miranda with the same plugin.
