Display

One of the innovations in the 2020 MacBook Air is support for True Tone , which adjusts the white balance on the screen to the current lighting in the room. This feature is not of the first importance and should be completely disabled when working with graphics.

In everyday tasks, True Tone will make working on a laptop more comfortable and reduce the strain on the user's eyes.

It seems that the screens in both laptops are identical, but this is not the case.

The MacBook Pro has a higher brightness of 500 cd/m² versus 400 cd/m² for the Air and supports a wide color gamut (P3).

Bottom line: for everyday tasks the models are identical; for working with graphics and color correction, the Pro model is better suited.

Performance

The new MacBook Air will come with an Intel i5-8210Y , just like its predecessor. Two cores, 4 MB of L3 cache and a frequency of 1.6 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.6 GHz.

It is correct to compare the base Pro model with a similar laptop from 2017, because last year the most affordable firmware did not receive updates and did not switch to Coffee Lake processors.

So, instead of a 2-core Intel Core i5 7360U, 2019 devices are equipped with a 4-core Intel Core i5 Coffee Lake processor with a clock frequency of 1.4 GHz and Turbo Boost acceleration up to 3.9 GHz.

There are the first performance tests of the new MacBook Pro, even the previous generation showed itself to be 15-20% more productive than the Air, and the Pro model with updated hardware will go even further ahead.

The RAM modules are identical: 8 GB LPDDR3 with a frequency of 2133 MHz.

There are differences in the integrated graphics. On the Air, as in the previous year, the rendering is handled by Intel UHD Graphics 617 , and the updated Pro, instead of the Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 with a new processor, received an Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645 .

The difference will be noticeable both during video editing and in games. The Air will hardly be suitable for gaming at minimum settings and editing videos in 1080p without any special bells and whistles. On the basic Pro model, you can try medium graphics settings somewhere; the device will cope with rendering comparable projects faster and will not falter when working with 4K, more complex effects and color correction.

Don't forget that Pro models usually come with faster SSD drives; for time-consuming tasks, this can also affect performance. In the basic version, both models received 128 GB of space.

Bottom line: both laptops can handle browser/messenger/document tasks without any problems. Of course, the “proshka” has a better filling and will give better results under full load.

In real life, the difference in the processor and integrated graphics can be roughly reduced to a 25-30% increase in performance.

Windows laptops are still losing out to MacBooks. So it was, is and will be

Perhaps among the readers there are those who, due to specific work or working conditions, cannot use a MacBook. Such people may have strict security policies at work and wired Internet is their only connection with the world.

Or maybe it’s due to some special software that is written only for Windows.

Well, I sincerely feel sorry for such people. After all, struggling with drivers, connecting a mouse, catching Trojans and viruses, or looking for a convenient email client for Windows, they waste their time.

I don't waste my time on inconvenient gadgets. After all, I have a MacBook. I sincerely wish that you have one too.
