HP Pavilion BIOS - how to log into a laptop and update

Hp pavilion g6 specifications

The HP Pavilion g6 laptop is recommended as a budget solution and the review will be devoted to it, but for those users who want maximum performance when working with multimedia, the older brother in the Pavilion dv6 series is more suitable.
Are you looking for an inexpensive laptop under $500 for home and office use? HP's 15.6-inch Pavilion g6 may be a good investment. We took a closer look at this budget laptop to see if you can save money smartly. Next, we will take a closer look at the characteristics of the HP pavilion g6.

HP Pavilion g6 (g6-2209sr) review

We really quickly got used to thin compact laptops, not even a couple of years have passed. I don't mean all users. Rather, us: those who constantly test technology. Someone will say that such “temporary” users are not an indicator; the majority change laptops much less often. This is true, but devices don’t come to us just like that: their choice reflects the present and near future of the market. Often - from positions beneficial to marketing, which do not always completely coincide with the needs of users. Judging by comments and reviews (oral and online), as well as store sales results, inexpensive laptops are most in demand, and not everyone is willing to pay extra for design, thinness and lightness. Users need, above all, machines that they can use to get the job done. Some people really need their computer to help them process graphics and video, and even allow them to play modern toys without any lags. A productive laptop does not have to be very expensive at all: fortunately, there is competition in the market, even if recently it is not as intense as it was several years ago. There was a rare guest in the GG laboratory - a laptop on the modern high-performance AMD Trinity platform, a 4-core processor, a discrete video card for which you need to pay less than 5,000 hryvnia (19 thousand rubles).

Design and ergonomics

The long introduction to the review has probably already prepared the reader for the fact that the HP Pavilion g6 is by no means an elegant model. 36 millimeters in thickness is a completely full-size “tag”, in the body of which you can fit everything. The device also weighs a lot: almost 2.5 kilograms.

The corners of the model are strongly rounded: some will like this “soap-like” appearance, others not so much. The design is completely lax, not business-like, but at the same time, due to its dimensions, the laptop looks somehow... solid, or something.

The laptop shines from all sides: the lid is glossy, the frame around the display (quite thin except for the top part) and the display itself are glossy, the space under the palm is glossy.

And only the bottom of the laptop is covered with rough matte plastic, extremely simple, but feels reliable.

The best gloss option goes to the laptop lid: it is not too easily soiled and not as shiny as other surfaces. True, he also collects fingerprints. But, firstly, it is not too noticeable, and, secondly, it is easy to wipe them off. True, it’s easy to scratch.

The attachment of the lid to the bottom of the laptop is strong and reliable, the deflection angle is average (since the lid is a bit heavy, the engineers probably decided not to make it too large).

The assembly is also decent, a slight deflection is only possible with pressure on the cover in the center, as well as in the place where the laser disc drive is located. However, this is unlikely to be a big problem. On the bottom we see ventilation holes, a removable battery, as well as a hatch with screws, unscrewing which we get access to the hard drive and RAM.

Ports and connectors

On the left side you can find a ventilation grille, VGA and HDMI ports, RJ-45 for connecting to a wired network, two USB 3.0, separate audio jacks for a microphone and headphones, which is not always found on laptops today, as well as a universal card reader. Everything is located very compactly; wide USB devices can interfere with each other when trying to connect them to adjacent ports.

On the left, everything is much simpler: there is a place for a laser disc drive, another USB, only this time slower 2.0, as well as a power socket.

Screen

The screen is budget: glossy finish, average contrast and brightness, small vertical viewing angles and slightly larger horizontal ones. A regular TN matrix, which will most likely be criticized for its inappropriate resolution of 1366x768 pixels. Indeed, in the case of 15.6 inches, this does not look very good: at a standard working distance, human eyes can clearly distinguish large grain on the screen.

If rays do not fall on the screen or light sources that create glare are not reflected, working behind it is quite comfortable. But outside in the bright sun this process will be painful. However, based on its dimensions, a laptop does not belong to the traveling brethren.

Keyboard and touchpad

The full-size keyboard with a numeric keypad is made according to the island principle. Most of the keys are large, all have a shallow, clear and fairly quiet stroke. Personally, only the arrow block seemed inconvenient to me: small vertical arrows and large horizontal arrows are somewhat confusing. The functional range, traditionally for HP, is “inverted”: when pressed, “laptop” functions are activated (for example, turning off Wi-Fi or adjusting screen brightness), and to call the usual F1-F12 you will have to press the Fn key.

I liked the keyboard. Good layout and workmanship. By the way, it is slightly recessed into the body, as is the medium-sized touchpad, equipped with two mechanical buttons.

This, of course, is joyful (for many users), but why it was necessary to make the texture of the touchpad so pimply and prickly is a mystery to me: the finger slides over it without problems, but somehow this process is not pleasing...

System and performance

The model we received for testing, the HP Pavilion g6-2209sr, is based on the AMD platform with a modern high-performance A10-4600M processor. Four cores, the integrated Radeon HD 7660G graphics card works in CrossFire mode with a discrete Radeon HD 7670M (for some games, by the way, it is better to disable the mode; for unknown reasons, it sometimes reduces performance). It must be said that the solution handles graphics well, which is confirmed by both graphics tests (see below) and toys.

Let's say I managed to play Battlefield 3 and Batman Arkham City at the native screen resolution at maximum settings. But the PCMark 7 system balance test gave the laptop a surprisingly low score. I don't know who is to blame for this - the processor or the hard drive. Based on Windows tests, both are weak in terms of graphical performance.

Windows 8 makes many users (especially those who want to buy a classic laptop with a non-touch screen) want to immediately tear it down and install the more familiar Windows 7. No, however, equipment sellers say that recently the question of the possibility of correct running “Seven” on a laptop with “Eight” preinstalled. However, there are no complaints about the operation of the OS on this laptop. There is one complaint against HP: in our sample the touchpad driver refused to work correctly. Multi-motion and scrolling did not work, which, as you understand, in the case of the eight, if not a vital necessity, then a very serious convenience.

Sound

The sound in the laptop is pretty good. This is provided by large Altec Lansing speakers located above the keyboard, along with the IDT 92HD87B2/4 codec. Mid frequencies sound clear, even pleasant. The highs, however, are often distorted, and there is very little bass, but for a laptop, especially an inexpensive one, it’s quite decent.

Autonomy, noise, heating

The car, which looks solid, matches its appearance and hums. During tests and games it is audible, but at times the fan works even in a state of relative rest. In short, the well-known scourge of AMD - not the most economical and well-thought-out cooling system makes itself felt. And this manifests itself not only in noise, but also in heating: the bottom and left side of the laptop are a little warmer than we would like, even without load, and during tests it is quite noticeable. The battery life is not outstanding, but it is not required from replacing such a PC: in maximum load mode (Wi-Fi on, loading, 100% screen brightness, Battery Eater Classic test) the HP Pavilion g6 lasted an hour and another 10 minutes in reading (30% screen brightness, Wi-Fi module disabled, Reader Battery Eater test) - exactly five hours. Well, the laptop managed to play movies in FullHD for 2 hours and 48 minutes.

Bottom line

HP Pavilion g6 (g6-2209sr) is a budget replacement for a universal work desktop. It will allow the owner not only to easily cope with all office tasks, but also to play most games (some, though only at low settings), edit a video or process photographs. However, it is worth remembering that this laptop is not very mobile: its large weight and large dimensions are not conducive to constant travel. 5 reasons to buy HP Pavilion g6 (g6-2209sr):

  • Affordable price;
  • good performance, presence of a discrete video card;
  • Not a bad sound;
  • Large hard drive (1 TB);
  • A large number of ports and connectors.

3 reasons not to buy HP Pavilion g6 (g6-2209sr):

  • Noisy and not the most efficient cooling system.
  • Grainy glossy screen;
  • Inconvenient touchpad.

Description of construction and design

The HP Pavilion g6 case is made in gray and black tones. Almost all visible surfaces of the laptop are made of glossy plastic, which is a bad choice because it stains easily and doesn't prove to be as durable as matte plastic over time. Oddly enough, but only around the screen there is a matte plastic bezel.

The case is quite sturdy for a budget laptop. It takes some effort to open the lid. In addition, the hand rest and surrounding panel do not sag when you press on it. The display panel (or rather the screen cover) is the only part that I would like to improve; it is thin and bends easily; When pressed from the reverse side, ripples even appear on the display. However, the attachments between the lid and the body are impressive - they are made of metal and look very durable.

In the end, the build quality is a little better than expected based on the laptop's price point. For those who want to add RAM or replace the hard drive, this will not be difficult; the cover in the bottom panel covers both components.

Design

The HP Pavilion g6 looks more expensive than its cost; it is not just “another medium-format laptop,” but a device in the creation of which the designer clearly had a hand. The lion's share of this effect is achieved through the massive use of gloss - if you do not put up with this type of finish, then it is better to immediately pay attention to some other option.

We received the most neutral design option, but much more cheerful colors are also available, including blue, red, pink, sand, etc. The lid, with a small HP logo in the lower corner, is finished in high-gloss gray plastic, which is very effective at hiding fingerprints.

HP Pavilion g6 case is made of ordinary matte plastic. In the rear part of the bottom there is a battery with a capacity of 47 Wh; memory and Wi-Fi modules, as well as a hard drive, are hidden under the L-shaped upgrade hatch.

There are several perforation zones on the bottom, and in the far left corner there is a main fan that blows exhaust air through the radiator on the left side.

Almost all available connectors are concentrated here: two video outputs, a network RJ45, a pair of USB and two audio ports, as well as a card reader, plus power and hard drive activity indicators are also located here. On the left side of the HP Pavilion g6 there is a DVD drive and a third USB, as well as a charger socket with an indicator that glows red during charging and white after reaching 100% level.

The rear edge is empty, and a pair of SRS Premium Sound stereo speakers are placed on the front.

Ports and features

According to the description of the HP Pavilion g6, its device offers a standard set of ports, nothing special. So we did not find USB 3.0, eSATA, DisplayPort and an ExpressCard slot. This is a drawback, because I would really like to have USB 3.0 for quickly transferring large files, such as high-resolution photos or HD videos, but this can only be expected from a budget laptop.

Drivers

Windows is designed in such a way that it requires specific software to operate the hardware, which is no secret. Due to the active promotion of new generations of HP systems, they refused to adapt drivers for Windows 7. Drivers for the HP Pavilion G6 laptop can only be installed using the following procedure:

  • Open task manager.
  • Find non-working equipment.
  • Go to the “Details” tab.
  • Select the item “ID equipment”.
  • A list with the equipment code will appear in the selected window.
  • This code must be copied and entered into the search service.

Description of HP Pavilion g6: screen and speakers

HP Pavilion g6 has a 15.6-inch display with support for 720p resolution (1366x768) and a glossy surface. This type of display is typical for budget laptops. Brightness is satisfactory; Contrast is low and color reproduction is slightly cooler - some colors look washed out. Viewing angles are small both above and below, which is generally expected for a TN panel. The glossy surface helps to add a little contrast, but does not eliminate the above impression.

Resolution is simply the Achilles heel of this display (like almost all laptops in this price category); 1366x768 is the lower limit for modern computers. With only 768 vertical pixels, the screen provides a very compact workspace; To view web pages you have to scroll for a long time. Using two windows side by side becomes completely impractical.

The device has two stereo speakers, located below the palm rests and manufactured by Altec Lansing. Despite HP's good tradition of using high-quality audio elements from Altec Lansing and Beats Audio, these sound the worst we've ever heard on any laptop or netbook in general. The sound is very dull and the bass just punches through it.

Case design

  • Dimensions: 376x244x36 millimeters.
  • Weight: 2.4 kilograms.

The design of the device is made in the best traditions of HP, but differs from other models in the abundance of gloss. The laptop lid, work area, side inserts and display bezel are made of glossy plastic. It looks glamorous and interesting, but this solution is not practical. The glossy finish attracts dust and small scratches like a magnet, mercilessly killing the presentable appearance of the laptop. The shape of the body also resembles other models, no frills, a regular rectangle with curved, smooth corners. The thickness changes slightly towards the front of the device, in the manner of Ultrabooks. The case turned out to be quite strong, does not bend or creak anywhere. All parts fit together as closely as possible, without any glare that collects dust. The hinges holding the lid are rigid and reliable; you won’t be able to open the laptop with one hand, which is bad, but the laptop itself won’t accidentally open, which is good.

Keyboard and touchpad

The Pavilion g6 laptop has a full-size keyboard, but without a separate number pad. The keys have a flat top and a straight bevel to the base to create space between them. The keyboard feels and sounds cheap; The keys make a quiet but distinct click when pressed. Tactile sensations are not particularly high quality; Responsiveness does not increase the desire to type. Surprisingly, the keyboard has a solid base and does not flex. The matte texture of the buttons becomes shiny over time with use; This happened to us within a week. Overall, we consider the keyboard to be satisfactory, but nothing more; The keyboards on more expensive HP laptops are much better.

The touchpad is good for consumer laptops. The surface may feel a little more abrasive than usual, but in terms of applicability it is better than being too smooth. The buttons are quiet and unobtrusive, which is always welcome and something touchpads should always have; But inexpensive laptops are notorious for loud, clicking touchpad buttons. This concludes the visual review of the HP Pavilion g6 and moves on to testing.

When testing the HP Pavilion g6-1A69US we had the following configuration:

  • 15.6" 720p glossy display (1366x768 resolution)
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
  • Dual-core Intel Core i3-380M (2.53 GHz, 3 MB cache, 35 W power consumption)
  • Intel HM55 chipset
  • Integrated Intel HD graphics
  • RAM 4 GB DDR3-1066 (2x 2 GB; supports up to 8 GB - 2x 4 GB)
  • Seagate 500 GB 7200 rpm hard drive (ST9500325AS)
  • 802.11n Wireless Adapter (Atheros AR9285)
  • Integrated webcam
  • Built-in DVD burner (hp DVDRAM GT31L)
  • One year warranty
  • Rechargeable Li-ion battery (10.8 V, 4200 mAh)
  • Weight: 2.491 kg
  • Dimensions: 37.4 x 24.5 x 3.1~3.6 cm.
  • Estimated price: $500

These HP Pavilion g6 specifications are slightly above the minimum for laptops on the market today. This laptop is quite sufficient for students and home users who want to surf the Internet and use a standard office suite. It's not at all suitable for modern 3D games like Call of Duty, and due to the low screen resolution, it won't be optimal for Photoshop work or intensive multitasking.

HP Pavilion g6 laptop performance specs

It should be noted that the Core i3-380M used in the $500 g6 version is the same age as the first generation of Core i-series processors; it was replaced by the second generation i3-2310M and 2330M i3. The new processors are faster, but more importantly, they are more energy efficient. It's also disappointing that the laptop comes with a Seagate 7200 hard drive; it's already ancient by computer standards (which naturally reduces overall system performance) and produces a lot of noise.

Heat and noise in the HP Pavilion g6 laptop

The only fan for removing hot air is located on the left side of the case. The fan runs constantly. In standby mode, the background noise from it is practically unnoticeable; under load its noise increases by an order of magnitude. Overall, the fan is louder than we would like; Ideally, the fan should stop at times when its operation is not required.

The case remained cool even after prolonged use under load, and this is the only positive effect of the always-on fan.

Battery life

We got 4 hours and 45 minutes of runtime from the g6 on a standard battery (Windows 7 Power Balanced, 70% screen brightness, wireless, and web page refresh every minute). This is an excellent result for a budget laptop and one of the best for this price category in the last few years.

Battery life test (higher number means longer battery life):

Reviews from experts

The HP Pavilion g6 is a good choice for those looking for a budget laptop for general use, including Internet surfing and Microsoft Office software. According to reviews of the HP Pavilion g6, its main advantages include high performance, almost five hours of battery life, low operating temperatures and decent build quality. The drawbacks are minor but noticeable, with the main complaint being the use of glossy plastic, which turns the laptop into a smudge-ridden box while offering questionable durability. In addition, the keyboard could be more sensitive and the panels stronger. Finally, the speakers are weak even by laptop standards.

Requests also include support for a higher screen resolution and a newer Intel processor, but none of this is feasible in this price range.

Good feedback:

  • Almost five hours of battery life without recharging;
  • Good performance for the price;
  • Decent build quality.

Bad reviews:

  • Widespread glossy plastic finish;
  • Low screen resolution;
  • Weak screen cover;
  • Weak speakers.
