Installing/Updating Drivers
The operating system, especially Windows, is very vulnerable to various failures that could cause drivers to fail. Or they were not installed correctly during automatic updating. In this case, you should completely get rid of all old drivers on the board and install new ones.
How to do it:
- Download the latest software for Nvidia, for AMD Radeon.
- Open the Start menu, then go to Control Panel, then Programs and Features.
- Remove all drivers for the board, then restart the computer and install new ones.
The problem should be resolved, to check this, launch any demanding game and check the FPS indicator, it should be high.
Old generation processor
The reason why the video card is not working at full capacity may well be the processor. If you have a powerful video card, for example GTX1050, and an old or even budget processor, for example corei3-3220, corei5-3470, then the problem has been found - there is not enough processor power to unlock the full potential of the video card.

The solution here is only to replace the processor with a newer one, you can take the same i7-6700K.
Overclocking Features
If, after all the manipulations done, you finally managed to achieve a stable frequency, then do not forget about cooling. Higher frequencies lead to increased heat generation and therefore it is advisable to increase the cooler speed by 5-10%. This can be done in the same MSI Afterburner.
To do this, go to settings . Go to the “ Cooler ” tab. Check the box next to “ Enable software user auto mode ”. Adjust the schedule to suit your video card so that the temperature is at the proper level, but the coolers do not spin at full speed. Also check the box next to “ Force cooler speed updates every period .” Confirm the changes and close the window.
Take into account the increased energy consumption. Just as in the case of the processor, the number of watts consumed can increase several times. It is difficult to give general meanings because they vary from case to case. Therefore, if you have a weak power supply installed, then it is better to refuse overclocking until you purchase a more powerful power supply.
Switching video card
As you probably know, when listening to music, working with text editors, in order to save laptop resources, the built-in graphics adapter is used by default.
While when running any demanding application - discrete. Switching between them should work automatically, but sometimes this does not happen and you need to change the settings yourself.
Let's look at how to change settings for Nvidia cards:
- Right-click on the NV icon />
- Close the settings panel and launch the toy. This time it will run through a discrete card.
How to change settings for AMD Radeon cards:
- Right-click on the desktop to open “Catalyst Control Center” and go to the “Power” section.
- Then in "Switchable Graphics Adapters".
- Select the required program and, on the contrary, set the “High performance” parameter.
This way, we will force the video card to work at full capacity in the application we need.
You can also disable the built-in board so that the external one is automatically activated; how to do this, I previously wrote here.

Now I suggest using a special program to monitor the operation of the video card. It is completely free, download it from. site and launch.
In order to find out whether our video card has started working at full capacity, you need to go to the “Sensors” section and launch the game.
Pay attention to the “GPU Load” indicator - the degree of load on the graphics core, it should be above 80-90%.
Additionally, you can check it in other programs.

Software methods
Optimizing game settings
This method is the most accessible and simple. Any game has many settings that can be adjusted to achieve the optimal configuration suitable for the characteristics of the video card. Reducing the graphics rendering distance, disabling some effects, such as shadows, reflections or waves on the water, reducing the detail of the picture - all this will significantly make the graphics card work easier and increase its performance. Moreover, not all effects are noticeable in the game, and disabling some of them will not lead to a sharp deterioration in the picture.
Setting up PC operation
The graphics card is an integral part of the computer and works in harmony with its other components, so there are often situations when the video card slows down due to the operation of the operating system or programs installed on the PC. For example, OS settings are often aimed at saving energy or saving battery power in a laptop, which prevents the video card from working at full capacity.
Since the video card is paired with the PC's central processor, its overload will also prevent the card from functioning effectively. Therefore, to improve the performance of the entire system, you should disable or remove the programs that load it, usually these are background applications. It is also a good idea to install the latest OS updates, processor drivers or firmware.
Reinstalling and configuring video card software
All nvidia or AMD video cards have their own software for advanced and fine-grained operating mode configuration. Sometimes the video card freezes due to incorrect settings in such programs. A factory reset may fix the situation. Also, using the software, you can optimize the operation of the video adapter, for example, increase the speed of the cooler.
Updating your video card drivers can also be an effective way to increase performance. This is especially true for new cards, whose drivers are often “crude” and poorly optimized. In addition to updating drivers, updating the card firmware can be an effective speedup option. Firmware is the internal program of the card that interacts with the driver installed on the computer. Information on how to flash a video card can be found on specialized resources on the Internet.
Why the video card is not working at full capacity: reasons and some methods of troubleshooting
Graphic adapters, called video cards, play one of the most important roles in any computer system. However, sometimes users notice that it is not possible to use the full potential based on the declared technical characteristics of the accelerator. Why the video card does not work at full capacity in games, or even in the case when such software products are not installed on the computer at all, is what we propose to understand further. Depending on the reasons described below for this behavior of the graphics chip, you will be able to choose for yourself some unified solution to use absolutely all the capabilities of the chip. But first, let's look at why exactly such situations occur.
The processor is weaker than the video card
A powerful video card is most often needed by computer game lovers. When purchasing a powerful video card, users often forget about the weak processor in their computer, which can become a problem later.
In a game, even with the selection of optimal requirements at maximum processor load, the power of the video card will not improve performance in any way. In computer games, with a weak processor and a powerful video card, the processor load will be 100%, and the video card load will be only 25-35%. The quality of the game will not improve. Rather, there may even be a deterioration in graphical properties or even the appearance of slowdowns.
The assembly option “weak processor and powerful video card” has no positive aspects in the operation of the computer, which means installing a powerful video card with a weak processor does not make sense.
Why does the video card not work at full capacity on a laptop with two graphics adapters?
It’s worth special mentioning computers and laptops that, in addition to a discrete video card, also have a built-in (integrated) adapter. Why does the video card not work at full capacity in such configurations? This is only due to the fact that Windows, if at the moment you are just listening to music or working with office documents and not playing a game, automatically switches from a discrete card to an integrated one. But after starting the game, for some reason the reverse switching does not happen, or it happens but incorrectly. How to indicate to the system that it currently needs to use a discrete chip?
To do this, when the game is running, you can either turn on the game mode using the system itself (in Windows 10, and only in it, this is done with the combination Win + G), or call a special program for managing a discrete video card (for example, for NVIDIA this can be the most common built-in control panel) and directly in the application add the game to the list of those programs whose graphics will be forced to be processed by the discrete adapter.
Why the video card is not loaded at 100 percent: interesting
Let's tell you why the video card cannot load at full capacity...

It is often quite simple to say exactly why the video card is not loaded at 100 percent. So, often an installed video card is idle because all its resources are not required. For example, the game is running at minimum graphics settings or “light” software is used.
It should be understood that the generated image depends not only on the parameters of the video card, but also on other computer devices related to performance. For example, if an outdated processor is used or there is not enough RAM, the video card may not be loaded at 100 percent.
Some video cards have the ability to select a profile using the built-in software. For example - maximum performance, maximum energy saving, maximum detail.
In most cases, if conditions do not require such a need, the video card will not operate at full capacity. The video card automatically adjusts to the required level of performance - in accordance with the game parameters
In cases where the GPU is not working at full capacity, the game lags, slows down and freezes, you need to use a special utility - FPS Monitor. It will help determine the load on the graphics chip.
Selecting a suitable scene in FPS Monitor will help you answer why the video card is not loaded at 100 percent. We need a scene with the "GPU" parameter. Next, you need to set the necessary elements of the scene for a specific task. As a result, during the game you can see the operation of system components in great detail.
By the way, we write about video cards quite often - we recently talked about why a video card is noisy

Let's return to our topic.
Situations where the video card shows low performance can be resolved by tuning the system.
Solution 1: Replacing outdated drivers
The most common problem that causes errors in games and other software is an out-of-date driver version.
Outdated drivers cause severe lag and impact graphics quality in games
The largest video card manufacturers AMD and NVIDIA offer driver updates from their websites. You can also use specialized utilities to update device drivers.

Solution 2: Upgrading the CPU
When a modern video card and an old processor are installed in the system, the question of why the video card is not loaded at 100 percent will be especially relevant. In this case, the video card is limited by the capabilities of the CPU, which does not allow the graphics chip to operate at full capacity. It is advisable to replace the processor with a margin of a couple of years.
Sometimes installing a new processor requires replacing the motherboard. The fact is that the motherboard architecture is designed to work only with a certain generation of video cards. It is better to study information about the compatibility of the video card and motherboard before purchasing components.
Solution 3: Switching the priority video card (for laptops)
Most new laptops have not only a discrete graphics card, but also a graphics core built into the processor.
Activities that do not require high performance, such as working in word processors or listening to music, allow the system to seamlessly use the built-in core and, thus, consume less battery on the laptop
At the same time, modern games do not always work correctly on laptops with a discrete graphics card. In this case, you should configure the video cards using the built-in software.
How to make an NVIDIA video card at full capacity
When deciding why the video card is not loaded at 100 percent, open the “NVIDIA Control Panel”, then go to the “Manage 3D Settings” section, select those games in which the graphics are displayed incorrectly. As a result of the changes made, selected games will be served by a discrete graphics card, so performance will increase significantly.

For a Radeon video card, the algorithm of actions is as follows:
- Launch Catalyst Control Center;
- In the "Power" section, find the "Switchable Graphics Adapters" item.
- You should add the necessary games, setting the desired performance parameters.
That's all - the question of why the video card is not loaded at 100 percent, can therefore be considered closed.

Obtaining information about the state of the graphics chip
Why the video card does not work at full capacity in some games or on its own is a little clear. But we need to find out the main reason for this behavior of the graphics accelerator or operating system. What is best to use for this?
In the most general case, to find out why the video card is not working at full capacity, you can use the universal GPU-Z utility, which will show the true load on the accelerator (it should be at least 80-90%).
If you need to get more detailed information and make additional settings, it is better to use not only original applications for managing discrete chips, but also some specialized utilities like FurMark, MSI Kombustor and the like. But even here there are some nuances, since it is not recommended to get carried away with excessive overclocking of video cards under any pretext.
How devices interact in games
Of course, it is not possible to describe all the technical subtleties of such a “commonwealth” here. But, to explain it more simply, then under normal conditions:
- The video card is responsible for displaying the image on the monitor screen. Modern cards, a large selection of which are available on the website of the largest online store in Ukraine https://elmir.ua, have their own built-in video chip. It takes on the lion's share of the work that was previously assigned to the CPU. Thus, computing resources are significantly unloaded;
- CPU. Whether it's an intel pentium dual core or any other, it processes all commands and calculations inside the computer. The CPU distributes resources between components and serves as a kind of “heart” of any system. Gaming performance ultimately depends on its power.
After all, as soon as the user starts a “heavy” game, the graphics processor begins to process graphics and physics (however, the Intel Pentium processor can also handle physics). The data is stored in its own memory. But if there is not enough video memory, it turns to RAM. And the CPU is “responsible” for it. In addition, during the game, various signals are received from the user, to which the video card must respond adequately. These signals are also processed by the Intel Pentium Inside processor. Also, game events are accompanied by sound effects. The CPU must also control the sound card.
Hardware problem
Now let's see why the video card does not work at full capacity during the game. According to most experts, the main problem may be that it is impossible to realize all the capabilities of the accelerator due to a weak central processor.
This situation can occur, for example, if you have a GTX1050 card installed as a graphics accelerator, which is a fairly powerful adapter, and the processor in the system is an Intel Core i3-3220 or its equivalent. It is clear that the processor cannot “boost” the video card. In this case, you will have to change either the CPU or even buy a new motherboard. And even RAM doesn’t play a special role here.
GP tasks
The GPU is a complementary device to the CPU. It is especially important for tasks such as photo and video editing. While the CPU is a general-purpose tool for performing all types of computing tasks, the GPU concentrates on image processing.
Data for graphics processing is sent to the GPU instead of the CPU. The GPU can process data for a wide range of tasks simultaneously. To perform parallel operations, the GPU has a SIMD architecture (with one command stream and several data streams). Processors of this type are used to perform specialized tasks: decoding, financial modeling, scientific research. Powerful GPUs allow for higher resolutions and smoother gameplay.
Obviously, a system with a powerful processor and a weak video card will not cope with games with high-quality graphics.
Questions about installing and updating drivers
Finally, drivers play an important role. It is quite possible that they were installed by the operating system itself, and it often installs only the most suitable software, which may not be fully suitable for the accelerator. And sometimes timely updating of such software is also required. In this case, it is strongly recommended to remove all video card drivers and then install the latest ones by downloading them from the manufacturer’s official resource. In some cases, it is advisable to use automated utilities like Driver Booster.
If the driver is still not found, try identifying the card identifiers in Device Manager and searching for the driver by exact match. But you will have to install it yourself.
Problems with some games
Finally, let's look at why the video card does not work at full capacity in some games (precisely in some, not all). There are usually two main problems here. Firstly, the player may initially use deliberately low graphics processing settings or FPS levels in the games themselves, which are set by default, and secondly, the game itself may not be an official distribution, but some kind of pirated assembly. Obviously, to fix the problem, you need to change the settings of the graphics accelerator or install the official version of the game, downloading it, if not from the official website, then at least from a trustworthy resource.
Comparison of CPU and GPU for games
It's not difficult to tell the difference between a CPU and a GPU. The CPU has a higher clock speed, and the GPU contains more cores. This suggests that the CPU can process one task in a faster time, while the GPU can handle more tasks simultaneously.
Moreover, the GPU is equipped with its own video memory (VRAM), which allows you to relieve the computer's RAM. In games, the GPU is typically used to render 3D scenes. Recently, there has been a tendency to use it also for solving general computing problems.

polygons and textures affect the FPS and not the performance of the video card, it’s still not clear in the hangar that the norm is 99% 50 FPS, as soon as the video game loads into battle it drops to 50-60% FPS 25-30, which is even offensive.

There is a problem in the hardware itself, or rather, this is how it should work with such hardware. Firstly, a weak percentage, secondly, a video of the “Green” category. even if the video were more powerful, there is stupidly nothing for it to process from the processor, so it won’t load (there’s nothing to load)
