Which iPhone is the best? Of course, the newest one. What if you don’t chase after new products and approach things rationally? Last year, in addition to the top-end iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, Apple showed a “simplified” iPhone XR. It sells well and helps the company make money, while at the same time customers get joy and pleasure.
I looked at the iPhone 11, wrote a text about how it differs from the old iPhone XR, and came to the conclusion that last year’s phone is still very good.
I myself use two iPhones: iPhone XS and iPhone XR. I refused to buy an iPhone XS Max last year: it is too big, and the difference in operating time between the “regular” and “max” is insignificant. I will write about my experience using the iPhone XS later, but now I want to talk about the iPhone XR.
Here are my reasons for buying the old iPhone XR.
The camera is not much worse
The second module in the iPhone 11 is definitely an interesting thing. But how often will you use it? Do you take architectural photographs and regularly travel to the mountains, capturing the beauty of the sunrise? Hardly. There are more bells and whistles, we’ll check how noticeable the difference is between the new and old phone during tests, but I’m inclined to think that the iPhone XR camera is enough for good photos. Maybe not the most sophisticated compared to the new 11 Series models, but not so expensive. Shoot 4K video on the front camera? Yes, this is all pampering.
Vibrant colors
Externally, the iPhone 11 has hardly changed. Yes, new body colors, yes, a second module - it’s easier to distinguish the new one from the old one. At the same time, Apple killed two cool colors: instead of rich yellow, a pale yellow color appeared, and the rich blue hue was exchanged for pale purple. Coral, the fashionable color of the outgoing season, was also removed, and now pale green is in trend.
Colors are very subjective, but I really liked blue and yellow, but now the palette has become different, which is a bit of a pity. Although in Russia, as always, black color dominates, so our customers will not worry too much about this.
But if earlier the iPhone XR was so bright and elegant, “not like everyone else,” now the iPhone 11 is no longer so rebellious and cheerful. Beautiful, but somehow different.
High cost of iPhone XS
The new iPhone XS Max with 512GB of memory costs as much as 127,990 rubles! That's almost 130 thousand for a smartphone. iPhone XS costs from 87,990 rubles, but it is better to buy a model with 256GB of memory for 100,990 rubles. That's a lot of money. Is it better to buy a MacBook Air or save for something else?
Even if you sell your iPhone X, you'll still have to pay a lot more for the new model. Honestly, the difference between the iPhone X and iPhone XS is not worth the money. The processor has become faster, but almost nothing else has changed. The camera has been slightly improved. The Smart HDR feature is interesting in theory, but it is not yet clear how it will work in practice.
The screen is still the same
Let's ignore the people's suffering, which boils down to the fact that the iPhone has a “terrible “unibrow” and huge frames.” At least the frames do not affect usability and there are no false positives. Yes, the phone doesn’t look like a wow bomb, it’s just an iPhone. But I don’t understand all these foaming cries when the Internet is trying to prove once again that the “unibrow” necessary for the Face ID system to work is such a terrible thing.
You know, it's a matter of habit. Have you seen the design of the new BMW? With this huge radiator grille. Yes, it looks strange. But this is now, in 2020. And in a couple of years the design will become familiar and become commonplace. It’s the same with these long-suffering frames of the screen - you just accept them for what they are.
In terms of characteristics, Apple did not change anything, the display is the same: 6.1 inches, still the same resolution. Apple anti-fans usually start making fun of and making faces, laughing that a phone for 50 thousand rubles does not have a Full-HD screen. Well no and no. You can’t argue against the peculiarities of vision: the human eye senses the difference in picture quality at a pixel density of up to 300 PPI. And when incredible values start like 400, 500 or 600 dpi, then it’s no longer the same when you hold the phone at arm’s length. Or do you use it while looking at it under a magnifying glass? Then there is something wrong with you.
Therefore, if you don’t chase numbers, but just use your phone, there won’t be any suffering. I like the iPhone XR because of its large screen; it’s more convenient to type articles for articles on it than on the iPhone XS, where the diagonal is smaller. The same goes for watching videos or surfing the Internet.
Operating time at level
Apple traditionally says nothing about the battery capacity, but here is the data according to GSMArena: 2942 mAh for the iPhone XR versus 3110 mAh for the iPhone 11. But Apple said at the presentation that the new iPhone 11 works an hour longer than the old one. Considering that the iPhone XR was a long-lived phone, I'm ready to believe that the iPhone 11 will set a new record for battery life among iPhones. Another thing is that in practice you may not feel this, so when choosing the iPhone XR, you don’t have to worry about the operating time at all.
And another annoying fact: the iPhone 11 did not come with powerful fast charging, as was the case with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. This means you need to buy it separately, so you can spend the money you save on it.
It's time to take it.
Last year's iPhones (XS and XS Max) will be remembered as the grayest in the entire history of the line: firstly, there were no radical differences in comparison with the iPhone X, and secondly, both flagship devices were in the shadow of the great iPhone XR. But we are not concerned about popularity and legend, but about practicality. From this point of view, the top models of 2018 are in perfect order: fast, cool, with a great camera.
True, the iPhone XS Max was initially sold for some crazy money, so it was pointless to take it. But now, after the release of the 11th generation, “outdated” iPhones have dropped sharply in price. At the same time, it is important that they have already been thrown out of the official line, so they will soon disappear from gray stores.
So, how much are they asking for the 256GB Max these days? From 67 thousand rubles. At the start, let us remind you, the device cost 110K, so the difference is significant. For that kind of money you get:
- The most luxurious display is no worse than in the 11 Pro Max;
- Apple A12 chip, which will be enough for another three years of fast work;
- An extremely decent dual camera.
Purely for comparison: for the iPhone 11 Pro Max for the same 256 GB you will now have to spend 100K. Yes, it has a better battery, a cooler camera and more powerful hardware, but this set is unlikely to cost 33 thousand rubles.

I think that the iPhone XR will sell well in 2019-2020: even if it is inferior to the new iPhone 11 in terms of characteristics, the difference in price compensates for everything. This is exactly the case when cheaper does not mean worse and you can get almost everything the same, but at a more pleasant price.

The world is going crazy: iPhone 11 sales began on September 20. Just ten days ago, the new smartphone was introduced, and now you have to admit: your previous Apple gadget is hopelessly outdated. Is it time to buy a new one? You can first take a closer look: what if it’s time to sell the completely outdated iPhone 5c or 6 and buy at least 8?
When will the iPhone 11 become cheaper?
The release of a new iPhone is a hype event, after which, since the first presentation by Steve Jobs in January 2007, one thing has always remained the same: the liquidity of previous versions of the smartphone. Apple has a policy of maintaining a flat price for at least a year after the release of new versions. Therefore, you should not expect that the iPhone XR, released in 2018, can now be bought for pennies.

But the cost of the iPhone X grew during the first week, and then fell by 7% over the month.
Six months after the start of sales, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus became cheaper by about 15% , and iPhone X by 20% . At the same time, in early April, prices in Russia were affected by the sharply increased dollar exchange rate. Then the iPhone X 256GB rose in price by almost 10%, and the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus by an average of 6–10%.
But the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, which were introduced in September 2016, fell noticeably in price just a month after the start of sales. The price of the iPhone 7 Plus 256GB has dropped the most this month - 40%! By March 2020, iPhone 7 and 7 Plus fell in price by an average of 30% .
It turns out that new smartphones fall in price almost immediately after their release - that is, in 2020 - by the end of October. In the spring of next year, prices usually stabilize and then change slightly. So the optimal time to buy a new version of an Apple smartphone is February and March.
