An image toy for €2300. Huawei introduced a smartphone with a folding screen

When the diagonals of smartphone screens have grown to the limit, camera parameters have reached the level of decent cameras, and the amount of RAM has become many times greater than on our seemingly old computers, manufacturers have to rack their brains to surprise users with something. This is how the idea of a second screen in phones was born. But everything new is well forgotten old, because many people still have fresh memories of flip phones. The first high-profile representative of the new generation of dual-display smartphones was the Russian YotaPhone, then there was a lull in this area, and companies began to rapidly reduce the bezels around the screen and introduce frameless models one after another. This year, smartphones with two screens have become almost a hit - a lot of them came out, and the functionality of the additional display is often at the same level, so we decided to bring together the best representatives of the genre. There is no single standard for a second screen, and it is not needed at all. Each manufacturer shows their imagination and demonstrates their idea of a second screen. Some people make it very small and narrow, others – on the contrary, quite noticeable. Some people place it above the main display, while others place it on the back panel or side end. Some manufacturers see in it only the ability to display alerts and basic information, others are trying to turn the second screen into a full-fledged one, which would be used for reading and saving energy. There are a lot of options, and we have chosen the most interesting and productive smartphones with two displays.

1HTC U Ultra

— main screen 5.7 inches, resolution 2560*1440; — additional screen 2.05 inches, resolution 160*1040; — processor 4 cores, frequency 2.15 GHz; — RAM 4 GB, main memory – 64/128 GB; — camera 12 MP, front – 16 MP; — battery 3000 mAh; — price from $465.

The smartphone was presented in the spring of this year and immediately became the center of attention. Users liked the distinctive design of the device, the shimmer of the glass case in the sun, great sound and excellent cameras, but the main feature of the model was the presence of a second screen. It is small and located directly above the main one. By default, it displays information about the date, time, battery charge and weather. Notifications from applications also appear on the display. You can customize it to display shortcuts to your most important apps or calendar events. With its help, you can control the player and set reminders for yourself.

Other features of the model include a large high-resolution screen. The display is made using Super LCD technology and covered with fifth-generation Gorilla Glass. The performance of the smartphone is excellent - of course, it has a decent Snapdragon 821 processor in all respects, and there is enough RAM. The main camera received optical stabilization and a set of other parameters that bring it to the flagship level. The front camera, despite the loud 16 megapixels, does its job quite normally. The main disadvantage of the model is the battery. With a powerful processor and a power-hungry screen with Quad HD resolution, 3000 mAh is catastrophically small, but there is a fast charging function: you will have to charge your smartphone often, but the process is fast. You will have to take care of the beautiful glass case so that it does not stick with fingerprints. Another feature is the absence of a 3.5 mm jack.

An image toy for €2300. Huawei introduced a smartphone with a folding screen

The start of Mate X sales is scheduled for the middle of this year. Previously, Samsung presented its folding device. The South Korean manufacturer's smartphone is 320 euros cheaper and will go on sale in April

Huawei presented the Mate X smartphone with a folding screen at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The device combines the functions of both a smartphone and a tablet.

The phone is equipped with a 5G modem. The volume of RAM is 8 gigabytes, the storage capacity is 512 gigabytes. Unlike its rival Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X only has one screen. Its diagonal when unfolded is eight inches, when folded it is about six. The frames are smaller than those of the South Korean competitor. The gadget is equipped with a triple camera on both sides, it has two powerful batteries and a seven-nanometer processor.

The start of Mate X sales is scheduled for the middle of this year in countries where by that time there will be developed fifth-generation networks. The cost of the gadget is 2300 euros. The competitor from Samsung is 320 euros cheaper and will go on sale in April.

The devices are compared by Wylsacom blogger Valentin Petukhov:

Valentin Petukhov, Wylsacom blogger “Almost unanimously everyone who was at the Huawei presentation said that the Mate X device is more interesting than the Galaxy Fold: it looks more foldable, thinner, and the folding screen is larger. The only question is that the Fold is still more like a book and it essentially has two screens: one small on the outside and a folding one on the inside. Despite the fact that this is still not glass, and the screen will get scratched quite quickly, it seems to me that Samsung’s solution is more practical from the point of view of ergonomics and further use. Huawei's device looks prettier from the outside, but there is a feeling that it will get scratched very quickly, although both devices absolutely play in a rather fashionable niche, the companies are simply showing that they have the appropriate technologies. I do not believe that they will sell in large quantities and be in demand. Both the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X have the most interesting, sophisticated hardware installed, and the Mate X also has 5G support. There is a feeling that these are devices for the future. I don’t think that for the money they cost, they solve any serious problem. It will be much more profitable for the average user to buy either just a large smartphone, or a smartphone and a tablet.”

In early February, the US warned the EU against purchasing Huawei equipment. The US Department of Justice accused the Chinese company of industrial espionage and violating anti-Iranian sanctions.

Last December, in Canada, at the request of Washington, the financial director and daughter of the founder of Huawei, Meng Wanzhou, was detained. Official Beijing called this an American order and called for the immediate release of the top manager.

2LG V20

— main screen 5.7 inches, resolution 2560*1440; — additional screen 2.1 inches, resolution 160*1040; — processor 4 cores, frequency 2 cores at 2.15 GHz and 2 at 1.6 GHz; — RAM 4 GB, main memory – 64 GB; — camera 16 MP + 8 MP, front – 5 MP; — battery 3200 mAh; - price about 400$.

LG V20 is not the first smartphone with two screens from the Korean company. In 2020, the LG V10 model was introduced, which, by the way, is still on sale. The LG V20 differs from it in design and improved characteristics: it uses a more modern processor and video processor, the battery capacity has increased, a second main camera has appeared, the rest remains almost unchanged.

When the main screen is turned off, the additional screen displays all important information: date, time, battery charge. In addition, you can use it to control the player, record a voice note, turn on the flashlight, and quickly make calls to your favorite contacts. Everything would be perfect if the small screen were made using AMOLED technology.

The smartphone has a nice metal body, good performance, flagship cameras, and there are two of them. Moreover, it uses a removable battery and separate slots for two SIM cards and a memory card - everything that is so missing from the old days. In terms of autonomy, the model is average: with a small amount of mAh, software optimization saves the day. When reading, the smartphone lasts 18 hours, while playing games – just over 5 hours.

Yota YotaPhone and Yota YotaPhone 2

Of course, we should start with this device, since it has practically no analogues and, what is no less interesting, was created by the Russian company Yota Device. The first generation YotaPhone was introduced in 2012. Here's what it looked like:

A couple of years later, the second generation of the smartphone was presented, which turned out to be much more interesting: it has a large main screen (5 inches versus 4.3 inches), a more modern design, powerful hardware, etc.

An additional screen is installed on the back of the case. In the case of YotaPhone 2, its diagonal is 4.7 inches, the resolution is 960 by 540 pixels, and it displays 16 shades of gray. Why is it needed? It can be used, for example, to read books or to control the desktop if the battery is very low. Moreover, with this screen you can visit websites and even play games! True, in black and white.

Some characteristics of Yota YotaPhone 2:

  • Main screen diagonal: 5 inches
  • Screen resolution: 1920 by 1080 pixels (FHD)
  • Number of SIM cards: 1
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, 4 cores, 2.26 GHz
  • Memory capacity: 32 GB
  • RAM capacity: 2 GB
  • Battery capacity: 2500 mAh
  • Main camera: 8 MP
  • Memory card support: no

3Meizu Pro 7 and Meizu Pro 7 Plus

— Meizu Pro 7: main screen 5.2 inches, resolution 1920*1080;
— Meizu Pro 7 Plus: main screen 5.7 inches, resolution 2560*1440; — additional screen 1.9 inches, resolution 536*240; - 8-core processor in Pro 7 and 10-core in Pro 7 Plus; — Meizu Pro 7: RAM 4 GB, main memory – 64/128 GB; — Meizu Pro 7 Plus: RAM 6 GB, main memory – 64/128 GB; — camera 12 MP + 12 MP, front – 16 MP; - 3000 mAh battery in Pro 7 and 3500 mAh in Pro 7 Plus; — the price is about $500 and $600, respectively. Chinese manufacturers are also actively producing smartphones with dual screens. In July 2020, the well-known company Meizu presented two gadgets at once, which differ in some characteristics, but have one similarity - a small screen located on the rear panel. The execution is unusual and eye-catching. It is stylistically combined with a dual main camera and, most likely, is more of an image thing than a real necessity.

The second screen can be activated or deactivated in the settings, put wallpaper on it, set it to turn on with two taps, and select the convenient display of notifications. It can display information about the weather, notifications, pedometer and even the camera, so the main camera can be conveniently used for taking selfies. The clock, date and weather immediately appear when you rotate the smartphone.

You can’t find fault with the design of the smartphone: beautiful smooth metal, a conveniently located fingerprint scanner, an excellent screen made using SuperAMOLED technology (by the way, the second screen is also AMOLED). Meizu Pro 7 and Meizu Pro 7 Plus are the company's first flagships with a dual main camera, color and black and white modules are installed. The devices are worth praising for their good sound, performance and good battery life. For now, the only thing I can find fault with is the price.

Smartphone with 2 screens: advantages and disadvantages

Let's find out what are the advantages and disadvantages of smartphones with 2 screens...

Surprisingly, back in the late nineties of the last century, phones with two screens were very popular - the additional display most often served as a watch.

The time has come for smartphones. Manufacturers have focused all their attention on “monoblocks” - phones with a removable cover that hides the SIM card, battery and other elements of the device. After some time, manufacturers began to move away from this trend - completely “closed” smartphones appeared.

Such devices cannot be opened - all important controls and connectors are located on the front and back of the case. The connector for a flash drive and SIM card in modern smartphones is most often located on the edges of the case. You might think that today a smartphone with 2 screens cannot be seen on store shelves. But this is not at all true...

Why don't they make smartphones with dual screens?

There are many reasons for the lack of dual-display smartphones on the shelves. Some manufacturers still produce smartphones with 2 screens, but their number is very small compared to single-screen devices.

The fate of such gadgets is different - some phones only receive a patent, but do not end up on the shelves, others can only be heard about at specialized exhibitions and read in news headlines.

Why does a phone need two displays? The main idea is simple - two screens make it easier to manage the smartphone system. The Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS consoles became popular for a reason. You can think of specialists in the field of design, graphics, video, photography - they all use at least two monitors while working

Few manufacturers reach the point of serial or small-scale production of smartphones with dual screens. This happens because manufacturers do not see any prospects in such devices - the sales volume predicted for such smartphones is appropriate.

Next, we’ll talk about the advantages and disadvantages of smartphones with 2 screens.

Pros and cons of smartphones with 2 screens

Two displays make it easy to interact with media, text and graphics, making working with them convenient and comfortable. The ability to solve various tasks at once is the main advantage that a smartphone with 2 screens has over its single-screen competitors.

Interestingly, many domestic buyers still choose clamshells with two screens. There are many reasons why smartphones with dual screens are not available in stores. Read more about them

Why, in our time, is a smartphone with 2 screens such a rare occurrence? If you go to any cellular communication store, it will not be easy to find such a device. The explanation is simple - phones with two displays are difficult to produce and require more money to produce them.

Especially for you: What does a listening device look like: is it possible to detect it?

Reasons for the lack of smartphones with 2 screens on the Russian market

There are quite a few similar reasons. Among the main ones are the following:

  • Lack of components - manufacturers do not have the equipment necessary to produce two screens;
  • Complexity of production - designing dual smartphones is not easy, small manufacturers do not have the necessary personnel;
  • The display is one of the most expensive parts of a phone.
  • High cost - a smartphone with 2 screens will have a higher cost of hardware than a smartphone with 1 screen;
  • Price - the manufacturer and buyer do not want to overpay;
  • Accustoming - most buyers are used to one screen - they don’t need a second one.

The most popular smartphones with 2 screens in 2020

Let's look at a selection of the most popular smartphones with 2 screens - let's start with a Russian design, assembled from Chinese components.

YotaPhone 3

The domestic manufacturer demonstrated a radically different approach to the purpose of the second screen than the foreign one. In YotaPhone models, including up to YotaPhone 3, the color Amoled display is located on the front. It is used in combination with a black and white electronic ink screen (we are talking about E-ink technology, editor's note).

The black and white screen is located on the back of the device. The colorless display is mainly used for reading books. All reading lovers will be delighted with the reader right in their smartphone. The YotaPhone concept is certainly outstanding, but these devices were not hits, and the company did not make a profit in the long term

ZTE Axon M

This smartphone with 2 screens differs from its competitors in one interesting feature - its displays can be combined into one large screen and simultaneously display applications, not only the same, but also different ones.

There are many different variants of the Axon M - the concept of the device is a phone-tablet. ZTE Axon M is a convenient option for watching a movie or browsing the Internet. Some time ago, a similar device was developed by the Japanese company Kyocera

Whether to buy an Axon M or not is a purely individual matter - it’s more of a “look what we can do” smartphone, rather than a convenient device for daily use. Available for future purchase only in the USA.

HTC U Ultra

In addition to the main one, the smartphone has a small two-inch screen - it is located above the main display. The additional screen has impressive functionality: messages, weather information, player buttons, time and other functions.

It is convenient to configure the additional screen for different situations, for example, it can turn on when the main display is turned off or vice versa. The additional display in the HTC U Ultra is certainly an interesting and practical idea, but its implementation in a smartphone is far from ideal

Interestingly, the next HTC U series, number 11, will have one screen. Apparently, the manufacturer decided not to experiment and stick to the traditional design.

Meizu Pro 7 / Meizu Pro 7 Plus

This smartphone has a small 2-inch diagonal Amoled touch screen with a resolution of 536 by 240 pixels. The additional screen on the smartphone allows you to view messages, play music and use the camera on the back of the phone.

When choosing between the regular and Plus versions of the smartphone, you should focus on the desired screen size. So, if you need a smartphone with the largest possible display, then the choice should be made in favor of the Plus version. The regular version of Meizu Pro 7 is not much smaller - the standard seven has a 5.4-inch screen

LG V20

LG is doing things in a similar way to HTC - there is a smartphone with a display similar to the HTC U Ultra. In the new version V30, the manufacturer decided to get rid of the second screen - LG decided to follow the already familiar HTC path.

It should be noted that the LG V20 officially a smartphone with 2 screens never had white sales channels in Russia. In other words, any smartphone purchased for use in Russia will be gray

The second screen of the LG V20 has a diagonal of 2.1 inches. The story with the versions of this smartphone is interesting. So, some phones have an improved audio chip, others have an IR port, and still others have none of the above. Before ordering the V20, you should carefully study its characteristics on independent sites.

Especially for you: The phone icon has disappeared: what to do

Hisense A2

This smartphone is a copy of the YotaPhone that is already well known to us. Last year, the Chinese showed Hisense A2 with color and black and white screens at a specialized exhibition. Some time passed and the manufacturer decided to announce a different A2 model - Pro. This is a completely different smartphone - with different characteristics and a new design.

An even more interesting situation is developing in 2020 - today the A2 Pro can be found in stores, but it is sold as the A2 model. A copy of YotaPhone 3 deserves attention from several points of view. Firstly - low price, secondly - low price, and of course - low price

When a smartphone with 2 screens is delivered to Russia, we will probably hear a lot of negative reviews. Like any Chinese smartphone, this copy will not be reliable - you should definitely not buy such a device to use as your main phone for the next couple of years.

LG X View

This option for LG V20 lovers differs from the latter primarily in price. Ideal for those who are not ready to shell out a lot of money and prefer to use a budget smartphone. The LG X View has a secondary screen with similar features to its big brother. Otherwise, this is an unremarkable mid-level Korean smartphone.

4LG X view K500DS

— main screen 4.93 inches, resolution 1280*720;
— additional screen 1.76 inches, resolution 80*520; — processor 4 cores, frequency 1.2 GHz; — RAM 2 GB, main memory – 16 GB; — camera 13 MP, front – 8 MP; — battery 2300 mAh; — price about $170. LG has dual-screen smartphones in a more budget category. In fact, we have before us an ordinary mediocre device with the minimum necessary range of capabilities (as it is today), but at the same time with a feature - an additional screen. It is located directly above the main one and is actually its continuation. The second screen is always highlighted and when the main one is locked, basic information about time and notifications is displayed on it, it is possible to control the player and place application shortcuts, you can also use it to receive calls (convenient when some application is running) and make calls.

The manufacturer has dressed the device in a glass case, everything looks stylish - more expensive than it costs. The smartphone turned out to be light and compact; it fits well in your hands and does not slip. The performance is average, but sufficient for most tasks of the average user, but the cameras turned out to be quite good. The downside is that the battery is not the most powerful.

A miracle smartphone that you don't want to own. Samsung Galaxy Fold review

The smaller display is needed to view notifications, change songs in the player, and perform other simple operations. In principle, you can do anything on it, but the buttons and other interface elements are so small that it is difficult to reach them with your finger, and there is no stylus, like in the Galaxy Note line. The worst thing is typing: instead of the spacebar, you constantly press the round button, which minimizes the application and returns you to the desktop.

It is assumed that to type text you should unfold the smartphone and use the internal screen: the active application will open automatically. It’s actually more convenient to type this way: in Samsung’s proprietary keyboard, the keys are even divided into two blocks with a gap in the middle so as not to reach for the center of the screen with your thumbs. However, there is no gap in the popular Gboard keyboard, but this does not cause any difficulties.

In the accompanying brochure, Samsung suggests opening two or three applications on the big screen at the same time, such as a video library, instant messenger and search engine. They can be placed end to end or one on top of the others. Probably someone will be able to find useful links, but this is not so easy for several reasons.

Firstly, some programs are quite functional in themselves: while reading, notes can be taken in the next window, or directly in the text; You can send the geotag directly to the chat without messing with maps. Secondly, applications are not designed for this mode. The screenshot in the brochure shows WhatsApp next to YouTube, and half the screen is occupied by a playlist, information about the channel, and various buttons that interfere with both watching and discussing. Finally, thirdly, even if there is nothing superfluous, it is inconvenient to use services in tiny windows. It’s often easier to switch between applications the old fashioned way (or even buy two flagship smartphones from the same Samsung: a pair of Galaxy S10+ will cost less than one Galaxy Fold).

The Galaxy Fold is the most enjoyable to read. The screen diagonal does not seem to be huge - 7.3 inches, but due to the aspect ratio, like old TVs, the area is impressive - about the size of an e-book. Galaxy Fold immediately opens your eyes to how pathetic the endless rolls of text are in mobile versions of websites and novels rearranged on the fly, which you need to rewind without stopping, as if you have a nervous tic. If there is something you can’t take into the future, then let it be digital scrolls.

5DOOGEE T3

— main screen 4.7 inches, resolution 1280*720; — additional screen 0.96 inches; — processor 8 cores; — RAM 3 GB, main memory – 32 GB; — camera 13 MP, front – 5 MP; — battery 3200 mAh; — price about $130.

The location of the second screen here is unusual - on the upper beveled end of the device, you won’t immediately notice it. The smartphone itself looks brutal and will clearly stand out from the crowd of similar ones: the back panel is made of leather, the ends shine with polished metal. Nothing more than a “skew” for Vertu J

It's nice to have a removable battery. Due to the beveled top edge, the information on the second display is always clearly visible. By default, it displays the time, information about calls and messages - it does not offer much customization options. Its main task is to show information about the time at night and about calls during a meeting, when it is better not to use the phone - after all, and the smartphone with its entire appearance shows that it is aimed at business people. The model has received quite a good set of characteristics, but now you can only buy it in Chinese online stores.

Hisense A2 Pro

  • Main screen: 5.5 inches diagonal, resolution 1920×1080
  • Additional screen: 5.2 inches diagonal, resolution 950×540
  • Memory (RAM / built-in): 4 GB / 64 GB
  • Camera (rear / front): 16 MP / 5 MP
  • Battery: 3,090 mAh

Price: from 13,383 rubles

Hisense A2 Pro is the Yotafon's most obvious competitor, because this smartphone has a second display also located on the rear edge and is made using E-Ink technology, which is a big favorite among book lovers. Reading text from such a screen does not tire your eyes at all. In addition, the E-ink display consumes almost no battery power, and this is important considering that the battery of a mobile device cannot boast of a large capacity.

The second screen is a useful feature, but many users have doubts that the cost of the Hisense A2 Pro is justified. The smartphone is criticized primarily for the fact that it runs Android 6.0 - an operating system that the language would not dare call modern - and there is no possibility to update the OS. Other characteristics are also quite average - judging by the reviews, Russian users believe that a device with such parameters as the Hisense A2 Pro has the best place in the budget segment - that is, up to 10 thousand rubles.

Advantages:

  • AMOLED display with FullHD resolution.
  • Availability of an infrared port for controlling home appliances.
  • The presence of both USB Type-C and a standard 3.5 mm connector.
  • Fingerprint scanner mounted in the power button.
  • Processor from Qualcomm.

Flaws:

  • Giant bezels around the display.
  • Old and bulky OS (Android 0).
  • No NFC module.

6Highscreen Ice 2

— main screen 4.7 inches, resolution 1280*720;
— additional screen 0.88 inches; — processor 8 cores, frequency 1.7 GHz; — RAM 2 GB, main memory – 16 GB; — camera 13 MP, front – 2 MP; — battery 2500 mAh; — price about $170. The back and front panels of the smartphone are made of Gorilla Glass 3, so the device looks solid. The second display is located at the back and is a thin monochrome strip. The screen serves to display the time, weather, missed calls and messages; the information necessary for display can be configured. Performance and cameras are average, battery life is also at an average level due to the use of a non-resource-intensive screen and processor.

We will not think about how necessary a second screen is - each user will decide this for himself. Finally, we only note that the long-awaited YotaPhone 3 is planned to be released at the end of 2020. According to preliminary data, it, like the legendary YotaPhone 2, will receive a second large black and white screen, made using electronic ink technology, and will be presented in two versions with RAM 3/4 GB and main 64/128 GB, Snadpragon 820 processor and 3500 mAh battery. It will cost $350-450. There are also rumors that Samsung is preparing to release a smartphone with two hard 5-inch color screens in a foldable body. Well, we'll wait and see, but the choice of smartphones with two displays is already more or less sufficient.

Upcoming foldable phones in 2020

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 is the successor to the original Galaxy Fold and it is likely to land sometime in mid-2020. This is one of the most anticipated foldable phones as Samsung has significantly improved the hinge, brought a glass display and polished the foldable lineup with more finesse. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is a testament to this fact, and hopefully the Fold 2 will make foldable devices a mainstream product category. Coming to the device, the Fold 2 is expected to come with a 7.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED Display with Infinity-V Punch-Punch. And on the outside it will have a smaller 4.6-inch AMOLED cover display. There are also rumors that the Fold 2 will come with either a Snapdragon 855+ or 865, but we're sure Exynos is out of the picture for now.

Best foldable smartphones
In the camera department, Max Weinbach on Twitter claims that the Galaxy Fold 2 will have a similar camera setup as the S20+, with a combination of a 12MP standard lens, a 64MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultra-wide lens . Many are also reporting that the Galaxy Fold 2 will come with the S stylus from the Note series. Having said all that, more than the specs, I'm excited about the Fold 2 because it will bring huge improvements over the last generation foldable device in terms of design and durability. So, if you want the best foldable phone, I'd suggest you hold your horses and get the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 instead, in a few months.

Expected release date: Mid 2020

Microsoft Surface Duo

The Microsoft Surface Duo is another foldable phone that I'm personally very excited about. After a long time, Microsoft has entered the smartphone market and surprisingly, it has a dual display device. While the Surface Duo isn't properly foldable like the Galaxy Fold and comes with a physical hinge to connect two displays , the device is nonetheless very attractive.

Best foldable smartphones
Microsoft appears to be developing an optimized operating system for the Surface Duo using Android. So far, no matter what we've seen, the Surface Duo looks like a solid device with a sleek user interface, plenty of gestures, dual-screen continuity, and more. As for the specifications, there is not much known to the public, but according to rumors, you will have two 5.6-inch displays powered by a Snapdragon 855 device . So, if you are looking for the best foldable device, I have no hesitation in recommending the Surface Duo.

TCL foldable phone

The best foldable smartphones

Just a few days ago, a leak surfaced showing a prototype TCL device that was supposed to be unveiled at MWC, but the event was canceled altogether due to coronavirus fears. Now the rendering suggests that TCL has developed a device that turns a standard smartphone into a tablet without folding the display. They use something called a expandable display, in which a second display slides out from the main display . While the concept seems strange and quite complex, we can't rule out that a device like this could be in the pipeline. So far we don't have any further details about the TCL foldable, but it certainly seems interesting. As and when we get more details about its specifications and display technology, we will update the article, so stay tuned.

Expected release date: Unknown

Xiaomi Mi Fold / Mi Flex

The best foldable smartphones

Mi Fold or Mi Flex is an exciting new foldable phone from Xiaomi. While the device is still in development, we've seen an early prototype in action and it really does look great. It comes with a dual fold screen which, once folded, can also be used as a compact smartphone. Also, what I like about this device is that the software is quite optimized for a foldable experience. The app transitions from tablet mode to smartphone mode very well . Since the device has not yet been officially announced by Xiaomi, details are scarce and you can only guess at this point. However, you can expect a top-tier foldable phone and since it's Xiaomi, an affordable price tag as well.

Expected release date: Late 2020

Oppo Folding Phone

After the Xiaomi foldable phone leak, Oppo waited no longer and revealed its upcoming foldable phone on Weibo. Oppo Vice President Brian Shen shared the prototype and stated that it is still in development. From the looks of it, the Oppo foldable phone is an absolute stunner.

Best Foldable Smartphones
Unlike other foldable phones, it has minimal bezels and a pop-up camera. Plus, the display is AMOLED, so there's no cheap floppy plastic, which is awesome. Since the device is still under development, we don't have much information about the internal hardware. However, according to rumors, the phone is expected to launch late next year.

Expected release date: end of 2020

Apple Folding Smartphone

As always, Apple is quite secretive about its projects, and so far they haven't announced anything on foldable phones. But a series of patents filed by Apple shows a completely different picture.

The best foldable smartphones

Apple is developing a very advanced foldable phone that includes a lot of folds and hinges . In fact, the Cupertino-based company is creating a series of new materials like an advanced lubrication system to hold the display together. Apple has also developed a new fabric for the iPhone foldable case. It is clear that Apple is definitely building a foldable phone, but the question remains when will the Apple foldable phone be available to the masses? You can only predict, but late 2021 will be a safe bet.

Expected release date: 2021

Will Samsung Fold be released in Russia?

Not yet. Russia, CIS countries, India and a number of other emerging markets (for example, the South American continent) with limited demand for such products are not included in the sales list. But everything could change if sales blow the imagination of her marketers.

Flexible screen

The phone has two screens. The first is an external 4.6-inch display with an aspect ratio of 21:9. It is relatively small. I would, of course, like to see a full-area screen, as is done in the Galaxy S10. But perhaps Samsung has saved all this for future updates, but for now we’re happy with what we have. You can use the phone without folding it out at all: all smartphone functions are available on the external display.

The second screen is 7.3 inches with a 4.2:3 ratio. We get a gorgeous, huge display for the Internet, where social networks are at your fingertips: a ton of everything fits in, it’s very convenient to surf Instagram, Twitter or scroll through Facebook. Of course, all this can be done on any other smartphone, but the trick with the Galaxy Fold is that there is a choice. The mood struck - they opened the phone and turned it into a tablet. If you’re not in the mood, you close it and use the small screen.

Although the auxiliary screen is not very convenient for active use. If you need to go to the call log and dial a number, okay, no problem. But typing text on a keyboard with small characters is inconvenient: there is a high risk of missing.

The opening mechanism is a separate story, because Samsung has developed a special design for the smartphone, trying to achieve the smoothest possible effect when opening until it clicks. It turned out well, but in your heart you still dream of auto-finishing.

The durability of such a screen and the reliability of the design will not stop technology fans from purchasing it. This is a completely new class of devices, and so far there are no statistics or user experiences at all. Therefore, all that remains is to wait and read the reviews of those who buy such a smartphone and share their feelings.

In the meantime, I can say that when you open the phone, you inevitably press your finger on the display. I would like to believe that Samsung thoroughly tested it for strength and there will be no problems. When folded, there is a clearly visible gap between the body halves.
