9GAG TV is humor without restrictions and division into categories from sports and animals, ending with Fortnite . Plus, it's full of GIFs and memes. The user can share each material on social networks such as Facebook or Twitter .

Foreign video hosting sites

Let's look at the largest and most popular foreign video hosting sites.

1. Vimeo

Free video hosting for downloading and watching HD videos with social network elements. Opened in California (USA) in 2004.

Vimeo has two types of accounts: paid and free. Free allows you to:

1. Upload videos of any format. For a week, each user is given 500 MB for storing videos. All files are stored on hosting services so that anyone can view or download them at any time.

2. A distinctive feature of hosting is the ability to watch videos in HD quality.

3. On Vimeo, you can share videos (or even entire albums with videos) with any user with one click. In the settings, you can specify the category of users to whom you want to send the video, for example, registered users, friends, etc. It is possible to publish videos on social networks: Facebook, Flickr, MySpace and others. You can also insert the hosting player code into blogs and any other sites.

4. Possibility of communication. You can subscribe to updates from other users, chat with friends, comment on their videos, and join communities of interests.

5. Select videos from a catalog in which videos are divided into categories. The hosting also has channels and groups that any user can subscribe to.

6. Make privacy settings.

2.Dailymotion

Dailymotion is a popular video hosting service in the USA. The average monthly hosting audience in January 2013 was about 116 million users. Provides access to a large collection of videos, including in Russian. There is a Russian-language interface. Supports HD video format. Not all videos are available worldwide - hosting has restrictions for some cities.

There are no restrictions on uploading videos on the hosting: you can upload any number, videos are almost never deleted (except for videos promoting violence, pornography, etc.).

Video hosting has the following features:

  • Video,
  • channels,
  • films and TV,
  • communities,
  • subscriptions, etc.

Dailymotion

Dailymotion is a well-known platform that can reach 112 million viewers every month. Of course, it falls short of YouTube , and some call Dailymotion its poor cousin. Well, it's all a matter of getting used to it. However, it is worth using the content contained here because they are high resolution. The site allows you to download 4GB video files in 1080p resolution, and YouTube compresses them after downloading. The biggest disadvantage? Videos uploaded to Dailymotion can last up to 20 minutes.

DTube

DTube is one of the most privacy-conscious video platforms. Its structure is decentralized, meaning that video clips are not downloaded or streamed from a single server (as is the case with YouTube ). All content is distributed thanks to the blockchain . This means that it will be very difficult for a potential thief to find out where the material was sent from. Another plus is that there are no ads, and another advantage is algorithms. Switching from YouTube is painless since DTube looks like its clone. But there are no guidelines for hate speech, content is rated by the community itself, and their creators earn in cryptocurrency.

A domestic analogue of YouTube will be launched in Russia

Mail.Ru Group CEO Boris Dobrodeev gave an interview to RBC

, in which he spoke about the holding’s plans to create its own video hosting. Dobrodeev noted that Google owes its growth to YouTube, which it owns, and his company does not yet have a direct competitor to the international service.

“In the end, all digital media and platforms will compete for time spent - the time that a person spends with them. We will set ourselves the task of increasing the time spent, catching up with YouTube, and increasing the amount of content consumed outside the social graph,” said the head of Mail.Ru Group.

Dobrodeev noted that his holding has already launched the Pulse news service, which compiles a personal list of recommended articles for each user, and in the future it is planned to release a similar video service. Its name has not yet been revealed, but its launch is scheduled for next year. However, the service will not directly copy YouTube.

“Not a frontal YouTube, we will make the service in our own way,” Boris Dobrodeev said in an interview.

It is worth noting that Mail.Ru Group is not the first company that tried to create “YouTube for Russians.” Thus, one of the most famous Russian video hosting sites is Rutube, whose design almost completely copies the original service. Currently, episodes of domestic reality shows and other TV programs are posted on Rutube. However, to view some videos you must be logged in.

Rutube’s indicators are too far from YouTube to compare them - the best video from the “Trends” tab on the Russian hosting received 12 thousand views. As for the Google service, views of videos from “Trends” start from 100 thousand and reach several million.

In 2007, the Smotri website appeared on the market, which made it possible to download video content for free, conduct live broadcasts, and simply watch and comment on the videos you liked. However, a year ago the portal radically changed its scope of activity and is now an aggregator of pornographic videos.

She launched her own free video hosting in 2008 - it’s called “Yandex.Video”. Now this service is more of a search for videos - on the main page you can see a large number of films, cartoons, TV series and several online shows. If somewhere in the depths of Yandex.Video there is content that was generated by users, then finding it on the start page is very difficult.

It took YouTube a long time to find its business model and understand consumer needs and demands. But now this service has become a part of the lives of Internet users, and no similar service can yet compete with it in terms of the number of active users, although there have been plenty of attempts to replicate it, says Alexey Buyanov, CEO of the investment company Bengala Investment.

According to him, the new Mail.Ru Group project will most likely join the queue of those wishing to “beat” YouTube, but it is unlikely to be able to lure away bloggers and active users right away, since creating worthwhile, interesting content will be extremely difficult.

“At the same time, if Mail.Ru Group manages to create a convenient platform, integrate new technological solutions, fit into the environment of other services and choose the right “focus” and its audience, as TikTok did earlier, then there are good chances of becoming a significant platform with good prospects . Previously, there was an attempt to create video hosting Rutube, but, as you know, this service is not very popular and suffers from too much advertising, which discourages viewers from constantly using the resource. There is no point in creating a Russian analogue of YouTube, but a good video hosting for the Runet, built on new technologies and solutions, would be very useful,” concluded the interlocutor of Gazeta.Ru.

Internet Archive Video section

Section of the video archive on the Internet in accordance with the name of the film archive. What? Well, that's it. There are documentaries, old TV and movies, as well as classics (like the full version of Nosferatu Vampire or Plan 9 from Space), entertainment, music and much more. You can filter them to find the ones that best suit what you're looking for. And it's worth a try!

Metacafe

Metacafe is older than YouTube ! That's why you'll find thousands of videos with a maximum length of 90 minutes. Unfortunately, most of them are of low quality. The good thing is that you won't find any duplicates here. This is a good place for those looking for funny videos, sports, video games or news. You can subscribe to channels and filter results by several categories when searching for content.

"Yandex.Video". One account – hundreds of possibilities

This YouTube alternative, created by its direct competitor, is easy to use. It is enough to create one account in Yandex, and you will automatically have access to all the videos of the search service.

The creators of the platform took care of their users, simplifying their communication with each other. To discuss videos, the operation of the service and the innovations that have occurred on it, they came up with the official Yandex.Video club. In it, users find friends with similar interests and discuss popular videos.

Compare with YouTube

Videos from Yandex.Video, like videos from YouTube, appear in search results, so they are easily found by search queries. To make it convenient for users to work with the service, its creators made it possible to simultaneously search and watch videos. While the selected video is playing, the user can “walk” through the search pages and enter new search phrases. For those who prefer to watch videos from a smartphone, there is a mobile version of the service. Do you want to watch movies and videos on TV? Yandex.Video provides such an opportunity. The video hosting site has a TV version.

Like YouTube, Yandex.Video selects videos that may be of interest to users based on what they have watched. To generate a list of popular queries, video hosting uses Yandex algorithms. They analyze what users are searching for, identify relationships, and create lists.

Yandex.Video and promotion

The speed of getting into the index is different, since this is not a video hosting, but a search engine. Since there is no video here, the YouTube analog works on the principle of a social network. As proof of this, comments, likes, dislikes, the ability to collect your own collections and share videos.

The search quality is not at a high level. We see multiple repetitions of the same videos in search (it seems that Yandex does not know how to effectively identify duplicate videos). Some videos don't even change timing. The maximum is the name.

The huge advantage of the resource is that it parses video hosting sites, social networks and regular websites. Those videos that you may never come across on YouTube, you will find in Yandex.Video.

At the same time, the mechanism itself for ranking videos in search and promoting them is interesting. When ranking a video for a particular request, Yandex relies on all the search “bells and whistles”, plus takes into account the number of views, likes, comments and other social activity that can be obtained from the statistics of a particular service.

What can we do to promote? The simplest thing is to increase the number of views, say in VK (where the cost of viewing is several times lower), and get to the top of Yandex search results. Yandex does not have the ability to clearly monitor statistics on these resources, so it is forced to “trust” their open statistics. And the same VK does not protect itself from video cheating in any way. By the way, winding up VK is also useful for searching on VK itself.

Insert “Yandex. Video" in search is another of the gigantic advantages of working with the video service on Yandex. Using promotions, we end up in a video insert, and we are shown to all search users, regardless of region.

TED

TED is a charity that organizes events and conferences around the world. Most of their reports are sent to this site. And they cover business, technology, and current world events and history (from the impact of virtual reality on humanity to the history of cannibalism). We recommend for users who speak English well.

Veoh

Veoh is a video platform dedicated to pop culture from manga to Justin Bieber. The advantage is a simple interface, the ability to create personalized playlists and interact with other users. If you create an account, you can join groups with similar interests.

Vimeo

Vimeo is a platform that is extremely popular all over the world. Interestingly, it was founded by filmmakers for people involved in the arts. It is still used by musicians and agencies to this day. The downside is the inconvenient interface that takes some getting used to. Advantages include support for recordings in 4K , no advertising, as well as social functions and the ability to subscribe to selected channels.

The most popular video hosting sites

Now let's move on to considering the most popular video platforms. It’s worth saying right away that all ratings were given from the point of view of a Russian-speaking user. In other words, below are hosting services that are popular in the CIS countries.

YouTube

From everything said in this article, it could not be otherwise; YouTube is the most popular video hosting not only in Russia, but throughout the world. What can we talk about, if you type its name into the Internet, the results will show more than 3 million sites that write about YouTube.

The site was developed back in 2005 by three people: Steven Sen, Chad Hurley and Javed Karim. By the way, the date of creation is February 14 - Valentine's Day. However, in the end, the resource was bought by the giant Google, and is being developed under their wing. And he does this, I must say, quite successfully. New algorithms for ranking posts are regularly introduced, the interface will improve, becoming simpler and more convenient, and many other improvements are taking place.

In contact with

Speaking about the Russian-language Internet, one cannot ignore the social network VKontakte, which has won the minds of millions of users. On this site you can easily publish your video materials, and since the resource is popular, you can even count on some success in promoting your content. However, it is worth saying that you should not count on a stable and full-fledged income, like on YouTube. The maximum that can be done is to find an advertiser directly and integrate their advertising into the video, but most partners go to YouTube, and not to VKontakte.
