JRiver Media Center 23.0.13 (2017) Multi/Russian download torrent

Induction training

We will not consider using JRiver for video, although it can do this, but will focus only on audio.
We will also not compare the sound of different players. This is a question of long debate, and many people have doubts about its formulation: why should differences exist at all? But we can confidently say that JRiver provides high-quality sound. For this reason, leading manufacturers of audio equipment in the top price category provide descriptions of settings for their devices specifically for JRiver in their manuals. Yes, JRiver Media Center is a paid product. But the price of JRiver MC at $49.98, in my opinion, is very small even for a not very wealthy music lover. For this amount you get a quality product, full regular updates, which is sometimes not available in pirated hacked copies, and the ability to choose a version for Windows, Mac or Linux.

The full version for installation on any OS now costs $69.98 (with a discount). You can pay by credit card or via PayPal; if you lose a registered copy or change your computer, registration can be restored quite easily through the website. The current major version of JRiver MC is now index 22.

General questions and dealing with intermittent sound

In the recommended system requirements for JRiver Media Center, you can read something that can be somewhat discouraging. For example, a processor of at least Intel Core i7 and a video adapter are required for a computer game enthusiast. I can immediately reassure you: the player copes well with audio playback even on a budget Celeron, on a board with a built-in video adapter, and such computer capabilities will most likely be needed only for HD video.

From a stability point of view, the player is written absolutely correctly. The music is decoded from the file and sent to the stream by a separate thread or process, most likely with high execution priority, and even if the program environment itself freezes, playback is not interrupted. However, simultaneous use of other CPU-intensive programs can result in annoying audio interruptions, as can happen with an Internet audio or video stream if the server is overloaded. Here you can develop it as a player, but the Google Chrome browser also uses high-priority processor time occupancy technologies. And if, at the moment of your enjoyment of music, it decodes a page filled with all sorts of scripts, videos, moving advertisements and other visual effects, it can simply take up all the processor time for its tasks and not give resources to the player on time.

Therefore, if you do not like intermittent sound, it is better not to run heavy tasks while listening, or you will have to purchase a powerful processor. A smart idea would be to dedicate a separate computer for audio (it may not be the most powerful or expensive).

The most unpleasant moment may come if you have nothing else running on your computer except the player, and playback is still sometimes interrupted. In this case, they usually immediately begin to blame the DAC, the USB cable, even the fact that the hard drive with audio files has a rotation speed of 5400 rpm and not 7200. Do not rush to draw such conclusions. JRiver MC is still a resource-intensive program, perhaps more demanding than Foobar. And some process in the operating system at the time of playback may interfere with it.

Judging by the support text in Wiki JRiver, the player has the greatest mutual dislike for the presence of a resident antivirus, especially Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Apparently, Kaspersky Lab decided that the audio stream can also be infected with dangerous viruses, and it must be checked when listening. One way or another, if you uninstall or at least turn off the antivirus while listening, the sound may stop interrupting completely. Also look at which resident tasks (not particularly necessary) may load the processor at the wrong time, and try to disable or remove them.

A few words about the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) driver. I have not heard of any data problems that installing this driver might cause. It is quite stable, and it seems that with it the exchange with disks is a little faster. But for each hard drive representation in the operating system, it emulates SCSI mode. Apparently, this can sometimes cause bursts of CPU time consumption activity, and it has also been noted that the number of cases of audio interruptions using this driver is increasing. If you don't need it for work, remove it or don't install it - and without it everything will function quite quickly.

An interesting system requirement for JRiver MC is the use of an SSD as the boot system disk where the player is installed. This may seem strange, but the data reading speed of any type of SSD, even the cheapest one, is much higher than that of a regular HDD, and this is critical for dynamic loading of player libraries at the time of operation. Practice shows that using an SSD as a boot disk gives good results in the fight against intermittent sound.

Disable annoying start page after loading

Once loaded, the player defaults to the JRiver start page. This may not interfere with anything, but when loading, the page climbs onto the Internet, “tests its teeth” with Facebook and other services, which can slow down the loading or cause annoying twitching during the loading process. It has been noticed that when installing some critical Windows 7 security updates, when loading the page, certificate error messages may appear that cannot be disabled in any way: the certificate specified in the message is valid. This can be fixed by changing the page loading environment in the player settings to Chromium with Internet Explorer by default (Tools - Options - Tree and View - Browser Core), this error does not occur in it, but Chromium works noticeably slower. Therefore, it is more advisable to disable the loading of this page altogether; it does not provide any benefit. This can be done in the settings “Tools” - “Options” - “Launch” - “Location”.

In the drop-down menu from “Start” you can change it to “Audio” or “Playing now”, after which the start page will no longer load.

Rehabilitation of undeservedly deleted files

While using different versions of JRiver, an annoying bug was noticed. It is not known whether everyone has it, and in which versions it manifests itself and in which it does not. But it seems that it wanders from version to version, and no one is going to correct it. You may encounter it too. After filling in the library tree, you can select a separate album or track, then select “Delete” from the popup menu. In this case, the album itself is not physically deleted from the disk, it is simply remembered as deleted, and is subsequently ignored by auto-import.

It has been noticed that the player ignores some tracks or albums entirely, as if they were deleted, although no one deleted them. Why he thinks so is completely unknown. The auto-import result does not report this if it is initiated manually. At the same time, you may simply not see 10-15% of your music library. Even if you manually add an album or track, it will then disappear from the list again when auto-import works. Fortunately, it is possible to prevent files and tracks deleted from the library from being ignored. To do this, go to the library auto-import settings ("Tools" - "Options" - "Library" - "...Set up auto-import..." or "Tools" - "Import" - "Set up Auto-Import") and uncheck "Ignore files" previously removed from the library."

In this case, you are deprived of the opportunity to use the “Delete” operation, but practice shows that it is undesirable to do this. The player stores information about the list of deleted files in a special format file, and it cannot be edited manually. And if you later want to return the deleted item to the library so that it appears in the list again, this will not be possible. If you want to delete something from your music library, permanently or temporarily, it is better to delete it physically on disk or move it to another directory that is not set to auto-import. After some time, the entry itself will disappear from the list. We recommend that you uncheck this box (also called a “flag”), even if you don’t notice that anything is missing. Problems will appear later, especially if the music library is extensive.

Displaying the time until the end of album playback

It can be convenient to find out how much time is left until the end of an album, rather than a separate track. This option exists, although it is disabled by default. You can enable it by right-clicking in the top information window of the player and selecting the popup menu item “Screen Settings...”. Next, in the “Status” field, you must also right-click and select “Add variable” - “Playlist Remaining Time” from the menu. The variable will be added to where the cursor is positioned.

After inserting the field, you can edit it as in a regular editor, add the delimiting characters you need, etc. Unnecessary variables and output fields can simply be removed so as not to overload the information line.

Playlist files and index map .CUE file

The JRiver player does not need special playlists in the case of individual tracks, each of which is a separate file. Everything in the directory is considered an album, the names will be taken from the tags of the files themselves. Therefore, their presence, like the .CUE index map file, is not necessary if the album is already divided into tracks. On the contrary, the presence of unnecessary information files only interferes with the operation of auto-import, forcing you to process unnecessary information, often contradictory across different files and tags.

It's not uncommon for playlists and the index map file (especially the latter) to contain errors. The only exception is when the audio file tags do not contain information about the artist, album, or track name, for example, this is the .WAV format. In other cases of separate album track files, it is better not to keep these playlists and the index map file in the album directory. If you leave them, no tragedy will occur, but auto import will work longer.

A completely different situation arises if the .CUE index map file is attached to a single audio file and serves as information about the division of tracks. In this case, this file is required, otherwise in the list of tracks you will see one track with a minimum of information. JRiver MC can automatically recognize the .CUE file and apply it to the audio file so that the tracks are displayed correctly.

But there are a number of subtleties. First, the index map file must be in the same directory as the audio file, and preferably have the same name before the extension. Secondly, before placing a directory with such files, you should carefully review the .CUE index map file for visible errors, which is very common. JRiver is very sensitive to errors in the index card file, and if you contribute an audio file with the wrong description, problems may arise. A .CUE file is a plain text file and can be opened in any editor. It has a simple, intuitive format. Unfortunately, often the main audio file name has an incorrect extension or the file name itself is misspelled. You need to look at the FILE tag, here is the most typical situation:

FILE Artist_Album.wav WAVE

And your audio file is called Artist_Album.flac. You just need to insert the desired extension and save the changes:

FILE Artist_Album.flac WAVE

Sometimes the name of the audio file in this tag does not match the real one at all. There is also a problem with symbols of national alphabets. Letters with tildes, dashes, wavy lines, long dashes, the wrong commas and apostrophes, almost indistinguishable in appearance - all this in the index card file can be replaced with similar-looking English letters and punctuation marks, or they will not exist at all. This will cause the index map file to not be recognized correctly. In this case, it is correct, for example, to copy the file name from Explorer and paste it into the tag instead of what was written. Just in case, I always remove or replace all letters of national alphabets, except Russian, and suspicious punctuation marks from file names and in the index card file line. Helps in all cases.

A completely exotic and rare situation is if the index map file is presented in Unicode encoding. This is likely to happen if it was created by a Linux program. This is visible in the editor - how each letter is readable, but separated from the next one by a space. I haven't tested whether JRiver on Windows recognizes a .CUE file encoded this way, but that could potentially be a problem. Therefore, I recommend immediately performing the following simple operation. Change the extension of this .CUE file to .TXT, then open it in Notepad. The text will be recognized normally, without unnecessary characters, select it entirely and copy it to the clipboard.

Create an empty file, for example, in Notepad, and paste the contents of the buffer into it. Copy the name of the previously opened .CUE file, change the extension back to .CUE and save the new file under that name. It will be saved in the default Windows encoding. Delete the old .TXT file and ensure that the new index map file does not contain Unicode when opened.

Some too “smart” editors recognize such encoding silently, without reporting anything. Therefore, you will not see that the text is in Unicode. I recommend viewing .CUE files with a primitive editor that does not understand this encoding. Advanced users can use professional text editors that display the encoding, and, as far as I know, some of them allow you to change the encoding in one click, without complex manipulations.

It also happens that you missed such a .CUE file with an error, after which it was incorrectly recognized by the player. You have corrected the index map file, but it does not help. JRiver stubbornly “does not see” it, displaying one line instead of a list of tracks. In this case, you can try to load the index map file from the “File” - “Import Playlist” menu.

There is a chance that the player will recognize the correction and display the correct list of tracks. But most often, both the list of tracks and the line itself with the name of the audio file are displayed. During playback, the list of tracks will be played first, then the entire file again. In this case, applying the “Delete” operation, then a new import, does not give any results.

The player remembers that it already had this in the library and again displays everything just as incorrectly. The easiest way to fix the situation is to rename the directory with the album. But this does not always help: JRiver can use artificial intelligence inappropriately and again recognize the album incorrectly. It makes more sense to do this: copy the catalog with the album to the same place next to it, slightly changing the name. Wait until it is imported into the list, in which case it is almost guaranteed to be displayed correctly, then delete the original directory with the former error. If you really want the directory name not to change, for example, you maintain your own registry with naming rules, you can try changing the file names (the only thing is that you need to do this somewhere in another directory that is not visible by auto-import). In this case, you need to change the name in three places: the audio file itself, the index map file, and the name of the audio file in the tag of the index map file.

After that, we return it to its place, and there is a high probability that everything will be recognized correctly. But do not forget about old files where there was an error: before this, they must be deleted from the auto-import area to avoid confusion. Alternatively, you can cut a single audio file into tracks according to the .CUE file with a program like Medieval CUE Splitter (download), the program is free. In this case, such a problem should not arise.

Saving and restoring the library when transferring the player

Transferring settings is always boring, and re-configuring when changing systems is even more boring. JRiver provides the ability to save the state of the library as an archive file (the audio files themselves will not be included in it, only imported information about them). This may be useful if the music library storage configuration does not change, but only the player version or the entire system disk along with the player changes. Initially adding a music library to an empty library takes a lot of time, especially if the music library is extensive.

If you do not restore the system disk from a backup, but install everything again, this can significantly speed up the process. In addition, the file also remembers all the interface settings you made, which will speed up recovery even more. It is possible to transfer the library and settings to an older version of JRiver MC, compatibility is maintained. To do this, you need to save the contents of the library to a file on disk that will not be affected by changing or erasing. This feature is available in an unexpected place: in the list tree you need to select “Playing now” - “Playing from Main Library” - “Main Library” (if you have not created another library, which is also possible). You can also get there from the menu “File” - “Library” - “Library Manager” - “Main Library”.

By clicking the “Save Library...” button, you can select a location and save a file with library information there. The file has a .ZIP extension. In the program settings directory, JRiver itself saves such files with each change, but it takes a long time to search for them; it’s easier to create it this way. After transferring the player, you need to go there and click “Restore Library...”. All files found earlier by import will appear in the list, and the interface settings will be restored.

Clearing Library Contents

Sometimes, with a heavy sigh, you have to start living again. For example, you found too many errors in the .CUE index map files on the disk, corrected them, and fiddling with the correction in the player list using the method described above seems too long and painful. In this case, cleaning the library and re-auto-importing from scratch will help. True, in this case all interface and library settings are lost, this is a minus. But not a single physical file will be erased from the disk, and this is a plus. This is not intuitively clear from the menu, but before performing the operation the player displays a message confirming that it will not delete anything unnecessary without your consent. The clear library operation is available in the same location, “Playing Now” - “Playing from Main Library” - “Main Library”. Click the “Clear library...” button.

But after re-setting and auto-importing, all the errors that caused problems earlier will probably disappear, and life will shine with new colors.

That's all for now. Happy listening!
