Windows Movie Maker is a free video editor from Microsoft, which, due to its simplicity and the fact that it was previously part of the operating system, was loved by many users. However, you will not find it in Windows 10, 8.1 and Windows 7; the program is no longer supplied as a system component.

As often happens with this kind of program, when trying to find where you can download Windows Movie Maker for Windows 10 and previous versions of the OS, the user with a non-zero probability ends up on a dubious site where the downloaded archive may contain not only the video editor we need. To prevent this from happening, previously it was enough to go to the official Microsoft website, but recently this program has been removed from there too. How to download Movie Maker for Windows 10, 8.1 and 7 for free in Russian from Internet Archive

Microsoft has removed the ability to download Windows Movie Maker from the official website (both the new “Movie Studio” and the old version of Movie Maker). And the same video editor, available on third-party sites, can sometimes install unwanted software. However, on the Internet Archive website (web.archive.org, is an archive of the Internet, including for previous dates), these files are available (as part of the archive of the official website): moreover, in their original form, since they were posted on the official website, which is better and safer than downloading from third-party sites. It is enough to find a direct link (I did this for you) to download Movie Maker (specifically to a Russian-language file), as they were presented in the past on the Microsoft website, paste it on the website web.archive.org and select the date for which there is a saved version in Internet Archive.

Installing both the first and second options is not difficult, work in Windows 10 has been tested, except that the following points should be taken into account:

In Windows Movie Maker 2.6, the installer interface is in English (the video editor itself is in Russian).
When installing Windows Movie Maker 6.0 (2012), on the first screen you can click “Select programs to install” and disable all unnecessary components, leaving only the movie studio (and a photo album, which you can’t refuse).

I checked both installers - in both cases it is an original file from Microsoft, the installation is successful, and both versions of Movie Maker work successfully on Windows 10 (which means they will work on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1).

However, I recommend installing Movie Studio - it has much better support for input video formats than the original Movie Maker. But for it to work, you will need to have .NET Framework 3.5 on your computer (you will be prompted to automatically download and install this component).

Microsoft engineers did a great job.

The last time the familiar editor was released was as part of the Vista operating system. The company decided to radically reconsider some aspects of its work and created a new product - Live Movie Maker or Windows Live film studio, Video Maker. You can adjust the image using a scale, above which the time is indicated. The icon on the right expands the video to full screen. This mode opens up several interesting possibilities:

Change theme . A tool for quickly creating slideshows from uploaded photos. There are several standard options: default, black and white, cinematic, modern, shift and zoom, fade, sepia. Each one is unique in its own way. Once selected, the opening title and credits are automatically added.
Share the film . Opens the clip to the entire Internet or to individual friends. There are many ways: OneDrive, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, Flickr.
Return to the film studio . The function returns you to the editing menu.

Additionally, full-screen mode allows you to view images individually by scrolling through them using special keys.

Control Panel

Home . Most of the main functions are located on the main tab. Starting from “paste, cut, copy” and ending with “car movie themes”. Sound files, voice recordings, videos, photographs are inserted through the panel. It is very easy to rotate a photo and save the film in a convenient format.

Animation . A section that allows you to customize transitions between individual videos and photos. There are really a lot of them - enough even for a demanding user. There are two types: transitions; shift and zoom. When you hover the mouse, the effect is demonstrated in the clip viewing area. There are duration parameters and the “Apply to all” function.

Visual effects . Tab for lovers of experiments. The image can be made black and white, blurry, or completely blue. With a couple of clicks you can adjust the brightness of the image. It is possible to activate several visual effects at once and apply them to all elements of the clip.

Project . Concentration of several useful functions at once:

Sound selection. What was it like in previous versions of Movie Maker? I had to adjust the volume of each individual audio track myself. Now, at the touch of a button, for example, the sound becomes louder than the voice-over or background music.
Synchronization. What came first? You have to manually adjust the music to the photos. It took a lot of time. Now what? Setup is done by simply clicking the “Sync with Music” button. The sound and images end at the same time.
Screen. A video can be in two main formats – 16:9 and 4:3. Sometimes it is more convenient to release both versions of the film at once to be shown on different monitors.

View . The simplest appearance parameters: reduce, increase, adjust the thumbnail size, waveform. Another button to open full screen mode.

Edit . The main means of working with films. The working field is presented in three parts:

Sound. Sound settings. When you click on the “Video Volume” icon, the slider appears above the scale with fragments - adjustment occurs within a wide range. The decay and rise rates have three settings: low, medium, high.
Setup. Selecting the background color of the text element, the clip playback speed (limits – from 0.125x to 64x), and the duration of the photo display.
Change. A tool that allows you to trim videos. It can be split, truncated, and a starting and ending point can be selected. An integral part of a modern video editor.

Options . A tool for working with musical compositions. Volume, rate of increase, decrease can be changed (similar to the previous menu). The starting and ending points are set, unnecessary fragments are cut off. Interestingly, the start and end are adjusted down to hundredths of a second.

Formatting . The text also needs modification. It can be inserted, cut, copied, fonts, sizes, and tilt levels can be changed. There are options for transparency, alignment, and color. The effects section attracts attention. Text appears in the frame in a variety of ways - offering a variety of effective ways.

Scale with video fragments

The important area is to the right of the viewport. Occupies a central position, displays added fragments, photos, sound recordings, music. Navigation is carried out using the mouse - buttons, wheel. The cursor is placed anywhere on the scale, which is accompanied by a change in the image of the viewing window.

The applied effects and transitions are also visible here. They are drawn in the sketch above. Diagram elements can be dragged to any other location. When you right-click, a drop-down menu appears with options for paste, copy, and other settings.

Element Management

A small area at the bottom of the main window that is easy to miss. Nevertheless, it is beneficial. On the left is the number of the selected element and their total number. The small icon on the right adjusts the size of the thumbnails. There are five standard values:

very small icons (selected initially);
small;
ordinary;
large;
very large.

Nearby there is a slider that scales the time scale. The results of changes are quickly displayed on a scale with fragments.

Live Movie Maker - nothing extra

Indeed, Microsoft managed to develop an easy-to-learn program with nothing superfluous. Only a basic set of tools, conveniently displayed on the control panel. An ideal solution when working with videos at home. There is enough functionality to create simple clips and slide shows; there is an extensive database of transitions, effects, and animations. Competing programs are left behind. Of course, professionals will pass by, but this editor was not created for them.

An unofficial way to download and install Movie Maker 2.6 and Movie Maker 6.0

After the release of Windows 10, a third-party set of system components, Missed Features Installer 10 (MFI 10), became popular, which is an ISO file for quickly installing those components that were present in previous versions of the OS, but disappeared in the latest ones. There is also a version of MFI 7 (for Windows 7), but both versions allow you to install Movie Maker in all the latest versions of the system, although in this set it is provided without the Russian interface language.

The steps to download are simple - download MFI 10 or MFI 7 and mount the ISO image on the system. Run the mfi.exe executable file from the mounted disk, then select Windows Movie Maker (to do this, in MFI 10 at the bottom of the program window, scroll through pages to page 3), and then select the required version of the video editor (version 6.0 also contains the DVD Maker program for creating a DVD from photos and videos).

An automatic installation will begin, after which you will get a working Movie Maker on your system (if you have any problems launching, try also launching in compatibility mode). The screenshot below shows version 6.0 installed in this way in Windows 10.

Missed Features Installer previously had its own official website, which has now closed. However, MFI remains available for download on the website: chip.de/downloads/Missed-Features-Installer-fuer-Windows-10_88552123.html (but be careful, the installer from chip.de also tries to install additional software on the computer from which you can refuse).

From the Microsoft website it is possible to download Windows Movie Maker in Russian in two versions at once (below we will look at installation using each of them), there is also one safe unofficial way to install the video editor in versions 2.6 and 6.0:

A newer version of the program is part of Windows Essentials (Basic components of Windows 2012), has new features, such as integration with YouTube and Vimeo services, new video and animation effects, support for a wider list of formats, and a changed interface. The standard (familiar with previous versions of Windows) version of Windows Movie Maker is available for download as a full-fledged installer (that is, you can install it without an Internet connection). Russian language is supported.

Both versions of Windows Movie Maker work on Windows 7, 8 and Windows 10. Which one you choose is up to you. Below I will show you how to download them, install them, and also insert screenshots of the interface, which may help you decide.

Unfortunately, Microsoft is no longer working on software updates, so we can only use what we have at the moment. In Windows 10, the ability to download software from the Windows Store has been removed altogether. You have to look for workarounds and install the tool manually. To install, run the downloaded file, you will see a proposal to install all the main Windows components or select those that you need. If you select the second of these options, you will be able to specify the installation of only the photo album and movie studio (this is Windows Movie Maker) and continue with the installation. After installation, you can start using the program.
