Human memory is an unreliable storehouse. Today you remember your passport number by heart, but tomorrow you may accidentally forget or get confused in the numbers. Plastic and bank card numbers, TIN, SNILS and many other data from archival civil documents may be needed at the most unexpected moment. And this is where the VKarmane - objectively the most popular Russian-language service for iOS, which allows you to safely store and access any personal data, from documents to notes.
The first places in the tops of the App Store and a huge mass of positive reviews make VKarmane stand out against the backdrop of faded imitators. What's the secret?
The VKarmane application was released in May 2013, and is now the most popular program for storing personal data in Russia . A simple and understandable interface, maximum transparency of developer actions, high security, regular updates and improvements - all this and much more has encouraged tens of thousands of Russians to entrust their data to the service. By the way, he has nothing to do with VKontakte.
VKarmane acts as a personal safe in which any personal documents of the user are stored. Do not confuse this application with some Western 1Password, because the VKarmane service was initially created with Russian users in mind. All typical data, such as information from a passport, is added using templates - personalized forms, very similar in design to real documents. Skeuomorphism is very much the theme here, so the deliberate minimalism of new versions of iOS will never affect one of the most revered qualities of the program.
Adding new documents to the database occurs intuitively. Click on the “plus” in the upper right corner and select the data type. Each option is accompanied by a nice pictogram. In general, there is a very large choice here. You can add: passport , bank card, SNILS, driver's license, international passport, certificate , medical policy , military ID, birth certificate, OSAGO/CASCO, marriage certificate and diploma. The number of documents using these templates is unlimited, which is very cool: you can enter passports and bank cards of the whole family, which will come in handy more than once in life.
In addition, VKarmane stores logins/passwords for popular Internet services. Among them are Apple ID, Gmail, Yandex, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Deezer, PayPal, eBay, Skype, Dropbox and other famous sites. On the general screen, these are distinguished by a special icon with a corporate logo. You can also add any login/password for any site to the database. There are no restrictions.
Data is filled in traditionally, in text form. Photo identification works for the plastic card number; everything else must be entered manually. In my opinion, this is much more reliable, because a machine error in the passport number can cause you a lot of problems. add real photographs of them to all documents - for example, a spread of a passport, or a sheet of certificate.
Completed templates are added to the main page of the application. Branded icons here are just the tip of the iceberg. By clicking on any of the options, you will be shown a realistic image of the document with all the key data. You can also open a detailed, text-only format by turning the phone to landscape orientation.
The developers tried to make the application as clear and accessible as possible, without sacrificing the design standards of modern iOS applications. In my opinion, they succeeded. If 1Password scared me away with its mechanicalness, then VKarmane, on the contrary, attracted me with its human approach, just like a warm tube amplifier against the backdrop of a rough Chinese receiver
Doubts about security plagued me from the very first seconds of getting to know the program. Its very essence implies: the user will share the most intimate data about himself and loved ones. I asked the burning question to the founder of the service, Sergei Pakhandrin:
We do not have a server to store users' personal data. Everything is stored in encrypted form on the user’s device, login using a password, and in the coming updates login via Touch ID will appear. The AES-256 encryption algorithm is used , which is used to encrypt highly important documents at the government level and in the banking industry. After 10 incorrect password attempts, the data is automatically destroyed . Even if the user loses his smartphone, the finder will not be able to access the VPocket data. You can read more about data security in VKarmane in our article. The application has been in the App Store for more than a year, we are used and trusted by a huge number of users. But Apple carefully checks applications and does not allow fraudulent applications in the App Store. Storing data in your pocket is much more secure than storing it in your bag. After all, if the bag is stolen, the documents will be easily accessible, but in our application you will not be able to access them. Many people store document data in the form of scans in a photo gallery or in notes, but this is completely unsafe and not convenient.
VKarmana doesn't really store any data on its side. To synchronize documents between devices, third-party services are used, where powerfully encrypted copies of data are uploaded - iCloud and Dropbox. Everything about self-destruction is clear, but logging in via Touch ID intrigued me. So far, this function has been implemented only in custom programs for iOS, and I hope that VKarmane will become one of them as soon as possible. It’s much easier to poke a sensor than to remember the login password. Especially considering the self-destruct function.
Detailed data display in landscape mode
In the near future, the developers plan to implement deep integration of VKarmane with the most popular applications and Internet services in Russia. We are talking about auto-filling data from personal documents. For example: you want to order a product online, click on the Fill button from VKarmane and automatically enter all personal information into the required fields. For example, card number and CVV code. Or just passport details. You can see this system in action now, in the application for checking traffic fines. By the way, for developers reading these lines. If you have a program that uses personal user data, you can quickly obtain an API to implement the corresponding button in your project.
A smartphone is a thing that we forget at home much less often than a passport. And we will always come back for it, unlike a document that may be urgently needed in half an hour. Instead of carrying a pile of documents with you and being afraid of losing them, it makes sense to use the VKarmane service and have constant, full access to any archival data. Today the program supports template packages for Russia, Ukraine and the USA. In future updates, packages for the Republic of Belarus and Kazakhstan are planned, as well as new templates for existing ones.
