Temporary blocking of a person
Sometimes it is not necessary to completely block a person, but to limit their access to commenting and sending us private messages. Can this be done on Instagram? The answer is of course yes! We have compiled instructions especially for you, which describe everything in detail:
- Go to the page of the desired user. As in the previous case, this can be done either through private messages or through the search bar.
- Click on the three dots located in the upper corner of the profile.
- Select “Restrict access”.
- In the window that appears, we review the imposed restrictions, and then confirm the procedure again.
One of the interesting features is that a person blocked in this way will not be able to see whether you have read his message or not. Also, access to commenting on your publications will be prohibited.
However, such a user will still be able to visit your page, like and view photos. It is advisable to apply this method of blocking to overly active people who leave a huge number of not always good comments.
What does “block on Instagram” mean?
When you block a user:
- he won’t be able to find your Instagram page;
- cannot view your photos and videos in your account (and you too);
- comments and likes will remain, but comments on your posts can be deleted yourself;
- a blocked person can mention you in their post and it will appear as usual in your “Actions” tab.
*life hack - block the person and change your account name, then he won’t be able to find or mention you
If you block a user, will he know about it?
No, he does not receive any notifications, that is, the person will not know that you blocked or unblocked him.
How to understand that you have been blocked? What does someone blocked on Instagram see?
You can tell by three signs:
- you log into your account and see that the posts have disappeared (“No publications yet”), and the number of publications, subscriptions and subscribers is visible, but you cannot see them;
- if you click “subscribe”, nothing will change;
- If you send a message to a person via Direct, the typed message is sent but does not reach the recipient.
- you can't find a person's profile through search (as if such a thing doesn't exist)
Do not confuse the account on which you are blocked with a closed account. A closed page looks almost like it's blocked, but you can send a follow request. Click “subscribe” and you will see a message that the request has been sent. The person will then manually approve or reject your request.
Block someone on Instagram
You can only block someone if you have a public profile, but the process is fairly simple. You identify your account and then set the lock. You can undo this block at any time, so if you become friends again, it's not a permanent change.
To block a user on Instagram:
- Sign in to your account.
- Search for a person's profile in the application.
- Open their profile and select the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner.
- Select Block user.
- Confirm the block.
Once you select "Block User", the option will change to "Unblock User" so you now know how to undo it if you two come back and become friends again. This will prevent that person from viewing your profile and sending you messages, but it will not prevent them from viewing your messages if you have mutual friends.
It's these mutual friends that allow you to block someone who blocked you on Instagram.
What does it mean to “temporarily block” someone else’s account (posts and Stories)?
“Temporarily block” means that you want to block a person’s posts and/or Stories—for yourself and your feed. But if you go to his page, you will see everything. He posts yours too. You can only temporarily block an account that you are subscribed to.
In the Story feed, click on the desired avatar (which you want to temporarily block) and hold. The temporary blocking menu will appear.
Or go to the person’s account and click the three dots on the right. A menu will appear, click “Temporarily block”.
On iPhone, temporary blocking is called “hide posts”, “hide history”. In the same way, go to the person’s account, click the three dots in the right corner and select what you want to temporarily block from the person.
This type of blocking on Instagram will be needed, for example, if a person makes uninteresting/too many Stories, but you want to read the posts. Or vice versa. Or a person writes about something difficult, you don’t want to see him in your feed, but sometimes you want to go in and read at a convenient time. There could be many reasons.
If you have temporarily blocked a person, he will not know about it and you can safely watch Stories, like and comment on each other. But the temporarily blocked account will disappear from the general feed. And his Stories will not disappear, but will be at the very end of the list of Stories. There you can find them and unlock them - click on them and select “Unlock History”.
Why is user blocking necessary?
Every day, millions of users from all over the world log in to the social network. You can interact with each of them, exchange messages in a personal chat, view other people’s publications and leave likes or comments under the post.
By default, the page of each registered contact is public, which means that all records are publicly available. Some users may behave inappropriately or show aggression towards you, in which case you can block any subscriber at your discretion.
What will change from this? Using this function, you restrict access to your personal page and publications by unwanted persons. After blocking, the selected subject will not be able to go to your profile or even write a personal message in the chat. Let's consider in what cases and for what purpose this service is used on Instagram:
- An unknown user periodically sends you advertising messages, trying to get into your subscribers. Blocking is an effective tool against spammers.
- A certain person began to behave inappropriately, insult your personality, write negative comments and chat messages.
- As for business accounts that conduct commercial activities on the portal, in this way they can weed out competitors who are trying to lure your customers.
Anyone can experience a situation where the only method of influencing an annoying and uncomprehending subscriber is a ban. You can add it to the blacklist yourself, without contacting technical support. At any time, you can cancel your decision and return the subscriber’s access to your page, only after that he will see your publications.

What does a blocked user see?
I wonder what a user who has been added to the so-called black list sees? If your account has ever been blocked, then you know what we are talking about. And if not, then below are the signals that will help you understand everything:
- When you go to a person’s account, instead of posts, the message “No publications yet” is written.
- It is not possible to view subscribers and subscriptions. When you click on the corresponding element, nothing happens.
- If you click “Subscribe” on the page, no changes will be observed. The button will simply remain inactive.
- It is impossible to find the required account through internal search. It simply doesn't show up.
- A private message is sent, but the recipient does not see it.
All of these points can be a “bell” indicating that another person has added you to the blacklist.
