Acer Iconia Tab A701 hardware specifications information
The “heart” of the new product is the new quad-core processor from NVIDIA - Tegra 3 with a clock frequency of 1.3 GHz. There is also a lot of RAM - one gigabyte. These characteristics are enough to not only smoothly play Full HD video (by the way, it will not be compressed on the tablet, because the screen resolution of the Iconia A701 is 1920x1200 pixels), but also run the most demanding and complex games from the Tegra Zone. They are distinguished by more complex visual effects, lighting, detailed textures and a larger number of moving objects. That is, the new brainchild of Acer is an excellent portable help in any area, be it work (web surfing on a large Full HD screen is generally a pleasure), watching videos or entertaining yourself with games. Now let’s take the A701 apart, all its components.
Acer Iconia A1-810 Tablet: Review
Materials and design - 4.0
The silver-white plastic body of the Acer Iconia Tab A1-810 tablet looks attractive, but is not very pleasant to the touch. In addition, a tablet with such a smooth surface as the Iconia A1-810 can easily slip out of your hands. The almost 8-inch model looks thick compared to its competitors. The tablet can only be purchased in black.
Dimensions and weight - 3.4
The Acer Iconia A1-810 is heavy for its diagonal size - it weighs 410 g, which is more than the average for 7-8-inch tablets. Device dimensions: 20.9×14.6×1.1 cm.
Ports and interfaces - 3.4
The Iconia A1-810 has an audio jack, a memory card slot, a battery charging port, micro USB for data transfer and HDMI. The standard set of wireless interfaces is Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi (b/g/n), GPS receiver.
Performance - 2.3
The Acer Iconia A1-810 is equipped with a quad-core Mediatek MT8125 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz and a PowerVR SGX544 graphics chip. 8 or 16 GB of memory are provided for data storage. In synthetic tests and in daily use, the model showed approximately average results for its diagonal. All tests were carried out five times, the average values for them are given below. In the Geekbench 2 benchmark, the tablet received an average result of 1329 points. In the SunSpider benchmark, the result is below average - 1487 milliseconds. The graphics chip's result is also below average - 5.5 fps in the T-Rex HD Onscreen C24Z16 test from the GFXBenchmark benchmark. The tablet is good for daily use and most games run well on it.
Display - 3.3
The 7.9-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels performed slightly below average. The image quality is good, and so are the viewing angles. The touchscreen is sensitive and recognizes touches well even at the edges of the display.
The maximum measured brightness is low - 306 cd/m2. The display has an average brightness distribution of 87% (see the table on the right for details) and a low contrast ratio of 635:1.
Battery - 2.5
The Iconia Tab A1-810's battery performed one of the worst in our tests. The device worked for 2 hours 45 minutes. in load mode, 10 hours 31 minutes. in minimum load mode and played a video for 7 hours 25 minutes. A bad result, but perhaps such a battery will be enough for many.
Cameras - 2.6
The front camera of the Iconia A1-810 has a resolution of only 0.3 megapixels. This is only enough for video communication. The rear camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels is enough for casual shots. The camera records Full HD video. In good light, it focuses quickly and photos are quite clear, even when zoomed in, but color reproduction suffers.
⇡#Options
Iconia A701 comes in a small box made of thick cardboard, decorated in a strict white, black and green Acer style. On its front side there is an image of the device, on one of the ends there are pictograms reflecting the main capabilities of the gadget, and on the back there are detailed technical information. The inside of the box turned out to be, to put it mildly, rather empty.
Included with such a functional tablet are only documentation, a power adapter and a MicroUSB → USB adapter for connecting external media. Neither a case, nor any simple headset, nor a banal cloth for wiping the screen (which loves to collect fingerprints) is included in the kit. An unfortunate puncture.
⇡#Appearance and ergonomics
The appearance of the new product can be described in one phrase: “Not for girls.” Even when you first get acquainted with the A701, when you just open the box, the thought involuntarily flashes through your head: “How much does this colossus weigh?” As soon as it comes to extraction, you understand that it happened for a reason. The device weighs 685 grams, and it looks overly plump: the thickness of the device is almost 11 mm (although the first iPad was about the same in weight and thickness, and no one complained. - Ed. ).
The body of the Iconia Tab A701 is made of carbon fiber. Thanks to this, Acer engineers managed to reduce the weight of the gadget. For comparison: the predecessor - A501 - raised the scales to 780 g (the difference in weight with the new product is just under one hundred grams). An undoubted advantage is that the back cover of the new product is rubberized - the tablet does not try to jump out of your hands, and the surface does not collect fingerprints as readily as a simple metal coating. The front side of the gadget is free of any buttons. Apart from the front camera and light sensor, there is nothing here at all. It should be noted that the camera is not located in the center, but slightly to the right. For what purposes and why this is so is unknown.
A small metal Acer logo is embedded into the rear panel of the tablet. Above is the peephole of the five-megapixel camera, slightly protruding from the body.
At the top end of the device there are rockers for adjusting the volume and a two-position auto-rotate screen lock.
The stereo speakers are located on the bottom end of the A701, which is very convenient: during everyday work you need to try hard to block them with your hand. There is also a MicroUSB connector and a small hardware button for rebooting in case the tablet freezes.
On the left side there is an on/off button and a 3.5 mm audio output for headphones.
On the opposite end you can find a MicroHDMI video output, as well as slots for a SIM card and MicroSD flash drive, hidden under a special cover that hides them.
In general, the appearance of the Acer Iconia Tab A701 turned out to be strict and consistent, without any frills, however, as a result, the device is not much different from other tablets. To some this will seem like a plus, to others, on the contrary, to a disadvantage. As they say, there is no arguing about tastes. However, Acer engineers executed a standard, almost classic solution in a high-quality and interesting way. It should be noted that the device is very well assembled. Nothing hangs or creaks anywhere. The edges of the device elegantly flow into one another, and only the silver ellipsoidal plastic plugs on the side ends of the A701 slightly spoil the overall very pleasant impression.
Appearance
The Acer Iconia Tab A1-810 is not particularly impressive in its appearance. Yes, it is neat, well built, without any unnecessary design features and, perhaps, a little thick. If you put similar gadgets in one row, like the same Nexus of the seventh series or the iPad mini, then visually they are not much different, even despite the fact that the latter have a diagonal of seven inches, while our respondent is an eight-inch representative of tablets .
Tangible ergonomic advantages are felt while working with the device. Many owners note in their reviews that the tablet seems to be made specifically for their dimensions (it’s comfortable to read data, it’s convenient to handle the screen and it’s pleasant to hold).
⇡#Display
At various press conferences, tablet PC manufacturing companies kept saying that their next model would have a Full HD resolution screen. We waited and waited for these same models to finally appear, but they didn’t wait. And Acer engineers simply took it and quietly released a 10.1-inch tablet with an FHD display (of course, it was the display that became the main feature of the new product). Moreover, it should be noted that the A701 has a resolution not of 1920x1080 pixels (the classic understanding of Full HD), but a little more - WUXGA - 1920x1200. The screen aspect ratio is 16:10 and the pixel density is 224 ppi. The indicator is not ideal (The New iPad has 264 pixels per inch), but it is very decent - the grain is barely visible, even if you bring the gadget close to your eyes.
The screen of the Acer Iconia Tab A701 is rich and contrasty, but on a fine day in the sun it will lack brightness (the display has a lot of glare, and the corresponding filter does not save the situation; perhaps the new product lacks it altogether). The maximum brightness value is 295 cd/m² - not too much (The New iPad has 335 cd/m²). The situation is aggravated by the Gorilla Corning protective glass, which, as we all know, simply loves to collect fingerprints (without a cloth for wiping the display, which is not included in the kit, the tablet absolutely cannot be used). As a result, instead of information on the display, the user will see his own “paws”. Thanks to the IPS matrix, the color rendition of the gadget is true, the color palette is natural and natural. The display contrast is approximately 600:1. Viewing angles are very wide, and there is practically no change in color when the view deviates from the perpendicular. The screen recognizes ten simultaneous touches, so there will be no problems with gestures.

Acer Iconia Tab W500: tablet review
May 05, 2011, Patenko Andrey 3
The market for Tablet PCs based on the Windows operating system today is negligible compared to tablet computers based on Android and Apple products. The lack of applications and the inconvenience of using the interface with your fingers has led to the fact that these are either “transformers”, or models with docking stations, or industrial computers “tailored” for specific tasks and applications. This time, Acer decided to prove that not only mobile platforms are in demand and released the Tablet PC Acer Iconia Tab W500 AMD C60 running Windows 7 with a multi-touch screen that supports recognition of up to 4 simultaneous touches.

We tested a commercial sample of the Acer Iconia Tab W500
for the US market. The device came to us incompletely - there was only the tablet computer itself, a docking station and a power adapter.
Acer Iconia Tab W500 connected to a docking station
The device is quite unique, in essence and hardware - it is a netbook, folded with a docking station Acer Iconia Tab W500
that's exactly what it looks like.

But without docking station Acer Iconia Tab W500
– a real tablet, with a capacitive screen that supports recognition of up to four simultaneous touch points.
Devices are sold both with a keyboard docking station and separately from it. The presence of a 3G module is also an option.

The presence of a USB port makes it possible to connect both a mouse and keyboard, but at the desk it is more common to work with a docking station. Now - the main characteristics of the device.
CPU | AMD C-50 1.00 GHz |
operating system | Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit) |
Display | 10.1″ WXGA LED TFT 1280×800 |
RAM | 2048 MB |

Video | AMD Radeon HD 6250 |
Ports | 3xUSB, HDMI, mini-jack 3.5 mm |
LAN card | ASIX AX88772B – Low-Power USB 2.0 to 10/100M Fast Ethernet Controller |
Wireless interfaces | WLAN 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 |

Size without docking station | 274 x 190 x 14 mm |
Weight with docking station | 970 g |
Weight without docking station | 610 g |
As you can see, the device is based on the Brazos APU
, developed by
AMD
, the essence of which is to combine a processor and a video card in one chip.
ATI Radeon HD 6250
graphics subsystem allows the device to play high-definition videos, Blu-ray images, and play games with simple 3D graphics.
They did not spare RAM - 2 GB, which is quite justified for Windows 7
. But the hard solid-state drive (SSD) has a capacity of only 32 GB, but it is possible to expand the internal memory capacity using SD cards.
When you pick up the tablet for the first time, you can... Holding a 600 gram device with one hand for a long time is not very comfortable, however, the segment leaders - iPad 2
and
Samsung Galaxy Tab
- almost the same parameters. The screen has sufficient viewing angles to comfortably use the computer on the road.
The included Acer Iconia Tab W500
was especially impressed by the sound system - the speaker unit is located on the reverse side, at the bottom. A line of protective mesh hides the speakers, and if the user sits and holds the device with his hands, the sound is reflected from the body and some smoothing and amplification of the signal occurs.
Acer Iconia Tab W500 - back side
For the size of the device and the speakers themselves, playback of music and movies is quite decent - you can watch a movie with friends on the road. There are preset equalizer presets for music, movies and games.
First time to control Acer Iconia Tab W500
it takes some getting used to. To call the file’s context menu, you need to press and hold your finger for a few seconds and release it after the circle appears. Only then will a menu appear allowing you to perform operations with files. When you click on a file once, it is highlighted and marked with a checkmark. Many functions and menu items are quite small, but during testing you get used to the star cursor and the response so much that you can no longer miss. On the contrary, the resolution and pressure sensitivity of the display made it possible to organize the workspace more comfortably than on tablets with large parts and tabs.
Still managing Windows 7
The Tablet PC can hardly be called finger-oriented, but the devices have different tasks.
control options for the Acer Iconia Tab W500
: a proprietary docking station, a full-size USB keyboard or mouse, as well as input means via Bluetooth 3.0.
The tablet connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi or via an Ethernet network in the docking station (USB↔Ethernet ASIX AX88772B
, according to our tests, the reception and transmission speed is at the level of 90 Mbit/s, which almost completely covers the real capabilities of Ethernet 10/100), the device is optionally equipped with a 3G module, and the Internet can also be used via Bluetooth 3.0 and a cell phone.
In addition to the usual Internet Explorer, the tablet comes pre-installed with TouchBrowser
, for convenient web surfing using touches.
To be honest, the usual browser from Microsoft
turned out to be no worse.
The Windows virtual keyboard is quite convenient and can be scaled or used for handwriting input. In some cases it would be more convenient to use a stylus, but for the Acer Iconia Tab W500
it is not provided, although nothing prevents you from purchasing it separately.
In proprietary software, in addition to TouchBrowser
, includes
SocialJogger
- a client for social media.
networks, My Journal
- for storing bookmarks of web pages that are dynamically updated, and
Clear.fi
- an application for searching, sharing and playing music, photos and videos.
There is also a proprietary Acer Ring
.
Through it, the user gets quick access to the functions Clean Disk
(disk cleaning),
Snipping Tool
(taking screenshots),
Device Control
(fine-tuning tablet parameters),
Acer Crystal Eye Webcam
, which allows you to work with cameras; as well as a calculator and games.
To communicate via Skype
both cameras can be used. The application worked flawlessly; the tablet's built-in microphone made it possible to talk even at some distance from the user to the device.
All the delights of a multi-touch screen are revealed in the Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows
.
You can evaluate the capabilities of four touch points in the game Microsoft Rebound
.
You can play together. In essence, the game is reminiscent of air hockey - holding an electrical voltage between two balls, you need to score a goal against the enemy. The package also contains the Microsoft Blackboard
and the arcade
Microsoft Garden Pond
, in which you need to touch waves and guide a paper boat to the goal.
Microsoft Virtual Earth
- an analogue of
Google Earth
, with the ability to zoom and control the virtual globe using your fingers.
Microsoft Surface Collage
is a program for creating collages from photographs with different designs,
Microsoft Surface Lagoone
is an original screensaver with a water surface that responds to touch.
As for video playback, then Acer Iconia Tab W500
at its best, but you need to use a player that allows you to use GPU resources.
By the way, Windows Media Player
in
Windows 7
supports this technology, and in our tests we even played
Blu-ray
over a wireless network from a remote computer.
An important parameter for mobile devices is battery life. In the test when playing video (480p) and the Wi-Fi module is disabled:
- The operating time of the tablet was 4 hours 33 minutes.
- The battery took a decent 2 hours and 45 minutes to charge.
That the Acer Iconia Tab W500
will find its buyers - obviously.
With an average device cost of 20 thousand rubles (without a docking station), with a familiar operating system and its flexible capabilities, with touch controls and the ability to turn into a full-fledged computer in a matter of seconds, this device will appeal to those who do not want to part with their data in familiar Windows
.
Acer Iconia Tab W500
can become a replacement for two devices at once - a netbook and a mobile tablet.
The only drawback, the lack of finger-orientation, is smoothed out by the rich capabilities of Windows 7
, good battery life and the overall good quality of the device.

In your photos, the docking station differs from the original one (in particular, the enter and shift buttons), this suggests that a Chinese copy was used in the review.Answer

Well, yes, Acer gave them a Chinese copy of the bug gag. It’s just an ENGINEERING sample))Answer
Very good detailed review! I would also like to clarify a couple of points: 1) At what screen brightness was the battery tested? And how long will it last in web surfing mode only? 2) How quickly does the device boot up, shut down, enter/exit sleep mode? 3) How much free space remains after installing Windows? I would be very grateful for your answers!

⇡#Sound
To be honest, we have little idea how a tablet can be used as an external music player, so we’ll tell you very little about the A701’s speakers. The reader needs to know three things about them. First: the device has two speakers (stereo), and they are located, as noted earlier, very conveniently. It is literally impossible to close them with your hand during everyday work with the gadget. Second: they are quite quiet even at maximum volume (Samsung Galaxy Tab P7300 shouted out the A701 at half its maximum volume), but the sound does not merge into a single mess, which is a definite plus. Third: in addition to basic sound settings, the new Iconia Tab supports Dolby Mobile filters, which qualitatively change the sound. The user can choose how much the tablet will highlight low and high frequencies on a scale from 1 to 7. In this case, the sound is smooth and relatively clear, the speakers do not wheeze or hiss even on complex compositions.

Operation of GPS protocols
Field tests were carried out in urban outdoor conditions. GPS satellites were found immediately, when the gadget was turned on for the first time. If there is such a need, then you can install some additional mapping applications and use the tablet as a navigator.
The basic set of programs and utilities includes Google navigation applications and standard maps. They may be suitable for everyday life, but for car navigation you need to look for something more serious.
⇡#Performance
In addition to the impressive display, the Acer Iconia Tab A701 also has a fairly powerful set of hardware, which we have already mentioned several times in the article. Therefore, without further ado, we invite the reader to familiarize himself with the results of synthetic tests and draw conclusions. We suggest comparing the results with those of the top-end ASUS Transformer Prime, set to “balanced” mode.
Discipline | Acer Iconia Tab A701 | ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime |
Quadrant, points | 3350 | 4217 |
AnTuTu Banchmark, points | 10522 | — |
Linpack, Single Thread, Mflops | 45,786 | 45,1 |
Linpack, Multi Thread, Mflops | 93,475 | 75,479 |
Nenamark 2, fps | 37,9 | 47,8 |

BrowserMark, Stock, points | 97708 | 110295 |
BrowserMark, Chrome, points | 118826 | 115957 |
Despite the new processor, the gadget showed far the best results in tests, and Basemark 2.0 frankly failed. The image was unacceptably jittery, and the result of 6.64 FPS was frankly disappointing. The reason for this, undoubtedly, is the WUXGA screen of the new product, for which it is much more difficult to quickly draw a picture than for standard 1280x800.
Quadrant test results
It should be noted that applications from the special Tegra Zone store, which contains toys for devices based on the NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, run on the Acer A701 without any problems, they try not to slow down (although this does happen), and most importantly, they look good The big screen is very nice. The now popular SHADOWGUN “twitched” literally several times during half an hour of continuous play. But ordinary toys from the Play Market behave differently: some do not function correctly, others do not display the full screen. Let's wait for the developers to optimize their creations for high-resolution screens, and hope that this will happen very soon.
Relative Benchmark
This test was created “for growth”; no existing Android-based devices can show really high results. The graphics level is much higher than the average gaming one, so even if the results here are not impressive, in real games the performance can be quite good. 60 fps in this test is already Xbox 360.
In the Relative test, the Acer Iconia A1 gets an average result. It is even slightly smaller than the MSI Primo 76. In various tests, Acer and MSI tablets compete with each other with varying success.
⇡#Battery
Icnoia Tab A701 turned out to be so plump for a reason. Thanks to the thickening of the case, Acer engineers were able to install a battery with a capacity of as much as 9800 mAh (3.7 V, 36.3 Wh) into the device. When watching a Full HD movie at full brightness with an active Wi-Fi connection, the tablet began to complain about lack of energy after more than five and a half hours of continuous operation. If you use the device less harshly, with average display backlight settings, then its battery will easily last for a day of use without recharging, because when turned off it consumes virtually no energy.
⇡#Camera
People who regularly take pictures on tablets know a lot about perversions. However, when you need to take a photo of something, and you don’t have anything other than the Acer Iconia Tab A701 at hand, the device’s five-megapixel camera will come to the rescue. Typically, the cameras of flagship models are equipped with 8 megapixels, but you and I understand perfectly well that these are just numbers and should be treated very, very skeptically.
The picture is presented without editing (enlarge by click)
Since the new tablet from Acer is not equipped with a flash, it will be difficult to shoot in poorly lit places - sometimes the focus is not caught, and the photo or video will certainly become overgrown with noise.
The picture is presented without editing (enlarge by click)
But as soon as you go out into the sun, the situation changes dramatically: the pictures turn out juicy, detailed and contrasting. And no one demands more from a tablet. It should also be noted that the gadget perfectly stitches together panoramas (“the seams” connecting frames are practically invisible), however, this is no longer the merit of it, but of Android 4.0 ICS. The user also has a digital zoom in their arsenal, which is better not to use, since the photo immediately loses detail and contrast, becomes covered with huge grain and simply becomes eye-popping and unattractive.
The picture is presented without editing (enlarge by click)
The tablet can record video in three resolutions: Full HD 1080p, HD 720p and VGA at 30 frames per second. The picture turns out to be quite clear and realistic, meeting the requirements of mobile video recording.
Acer Iconia Tab A701 video camera sample
In addition to the main camera, the tablet is also equipped with a one-megapixel front camera. It is quite suitable for video calls, but the picture turns out a bit dirty even in good light.
Here you can.
⇡#Software
Iconia Tab A701 runs Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwitch operating system. In addition to the standard software provided by the Google OS, the tablet has on board the Polaris Office application - one of the best editors for “office” files (doc, xls and others), as well as a very convenient file manager from Acer, which is modestly and simply called “ Files". The tablet also comes pre-installed with two games from Electronic Arts, for which the user needs to download additional files from the network: Monopoly and Real Racing 2.
The very convenient Acer Ring has not gone away (and thank God!), which can be accessed from any application by clicking on the corresponding icon on the taskbar. It contains icons for your four favorite apps, search, device volume control, and browser bookmarks. Acer Ring really makes navigating the system easy.
The tablet tries its best not to slow down, and it succeeds. Switching between applications, as well as their execution itself, occurs without delay. And if the device does think, it’s only for a few milliseconds: quickly drawing a picture for such a large screen is not an easy task. It should be noted that the tablet gets noticeably warm during operation.
⇡#Conclusion
Acer, having released the Iconia Tab A701 tablet to the market, if it did not make a mini-revolution, then came close to it. At the time of writing, the new product has one of the best displays we have ever seen on an Android device. High screen resolution will allow you to achieve greater realism in games, and in general even the operating system interface looks nicer.
However, you shouldn’t rush headlong to the store to buy a new product. It’s better to wait for the release of a few more tablets with Full HD screens (at least the long-awaited Huawei MediaPad 10) and give developers time to optimize applications for high-resolution displays. Acer Iconia Tab A701 went on sale at the end of July; the average price of the new product at the time of publication of the article, according to 3DMarket, is about 22 thousand rubles.
