Why does Google need to reinvent the wheel again? After all, there are a lot of similar instant messengers on the market, including our own Hangouts, which is capable of performing similar functions and even more. But Google stubbornly follows its path, introducing the video messenger Duo to everyone.

However, such tactics of “testing the waters” are not the first time for Google. The company is always searching and experimenting with its various products according to the principle “if it takes off” - great, “if it doesn’t take off” - no big deal, we’ll close it or merge it with another service. Registration and mandatory linking to a Google account. But surprisingly, this is not the case in Duo. Moreover, there is no need to register: no logins and passwords, email addresses with account activation and other information. All you have to do is enter your phone number, to which the messenger will be assigned. If you have used WhatsApp before, this procedure will be familiar to you. In this regard, Duo leaves far behind analogues such as Facetime, Skype, Hangouts and many others. Installation is faster and easier. This is an absolute advantage of the new service.
Interface
The Duo workspace is a single screen, essentially an interface to your device's front-facing camera, which launches automatically. At the bottom of the screen there is a video call button. This panel, which opens by swiping up, also displays the latest calls (received, dialed, missed). Implemented as in a regular “dialer” of any smartphone.
When you click the call button, a pop-up window appears with a list of contacts. Duo automatically analyzes the address book on a mobile device and identifies those who already have this messenger installed. Such contacts are assigned to the beginning of the list. For others, the application offers to send an SMS invitation to install the program. But what to do if you need to call a person who is not among your contacts? These Duo users can also be called using a phone number that must be entered manually in the search bar.
In video call mode, the application interface changes slightly. As in any other messenger, the main part of the screen is occupied by the image of the caller, additional buttons appear: Bluethooth (if you are using the appropriate headset), a microphone and a button to switch the front and main cameras.
There are few settings in the application: you can turn on vibration when connected, limit the use of mobile data, and delete the linking of your phone number in case you change your SIM card or change your mind about using the messenger. In addition, there is a list of blocked numbers where you can add unwanted contacts.

Registration on Android or iOS is performed as follows:
- When you first start, you need to go through a short registration - indicate your country and mobile number;
- Afterwards, you will be sent a message to your phone with a code that you must enter in the program to confirm your registration;
- Next, confirm four dialog boxes - requests to use audio, video with photos, access to contacts, and the ability to send messages. Naturally, allowing you to use this or that function is a matter of your personal desire. But confirming the above requests will allow you to have access to all the features of Google Duo;
- Please note that the request to access contacts and send messages is only needed to search for registered accounts and the ability to invite new people to the service.
That's all. As they say, everything ingenious is simple.
Now you can start using the application. It goes like this:
- The main menu of the program will appear in front of you - your image, the call key and three dots in the upper corner to enter the settings;
- When you press the call key, you are taken to the phone book, where contacts are collected. First of all, users who have Google Duo on iOS or Android are displayed, then all other numbers to whom you can send a message with an invitation to the application are displayed;

The developers introduce us to this same function during the first call. Knock Knock allows you to see your interlocutor before accepting the call. This feature works provided that both subscribers have activated this option in the application settings. In addition, the caller must be added to the interlocutor's contact list.
Duo can work with devices that have two main cameras on board, such as the LG G5 or Huawei P9 - the application correctly switches between them and the front camera. In addition, when making calls in Duo, you can change the priority of displaying the image in the main window: it can be the image of the interlocutor or the image of your camera. It looks a little confusing at first, but once you figure it out, it's actually very convenient.
One of the key features of the Duo messenger is its ability to adapt to the Internet. When connected to Wi-Fi, the application can additionally use mobile data transfer to seamlessly switch between Wi-Fi and mobile Internet. If the connection is poor, the image resolution decreases, video transmission may pause, Duo will offer to turn off the camera altogether (as with low battery), but the connection will not be interrupted. In general, calls are quite stable, even with not very good internet. The voice acting is, for the most part, excellent.

But I would not write this down as a disadvantage, since the purpose of Duo is precisely simple video calls between two mobile device users. The only significant drawback worth noting is the fact that linking a phone number for activation limits the use of the application to only one device. And one more unpleasant nuance that was noticed while using the application - when the device goes to sleep, Duo is often unloaded from memory and does not respond to incoming calls.
