Immediately after taking a screenshot on a Mac, a file with a *.png extension appears on the desktop.
The keyboard shortcut Command + Shift + 4 activates selection mode. After clicking these buttons, you will only have to select the desired area and the screenshot will capture only the specified space . For convenience, at the moment of selection, we see the height and width of the future image in pixels; you can cancel selections by pressing Escape.
If, after pressing Command + Shift + 4, we also press Space, then we will proceed to photographing program windows (the cursor will change to a camera icon). Simply move the cursor over the desired application and click on the left mouse button to save a snapshot of the specified program.
In this way, you can take a snapshot of the menu bar or any system or software context menu.
In just a few minutes, you can customize the format of the saved screenshot, its name and source folder.
You can change the keyboard shortcut for taking screenshots to a more convenient one in the System Preferences application. Just go to the Keyboard – Keyboard shortcuts section, select the Screenshots section and specify the appropriate shortcut.

Question: When I take a screenshot on a Mac, it doubles the image. I do 100x100 (the cursor shows these numbers), in “View” I see that the size is 200x200. And when I try to insert an image somewhere, it is inserted not in the size in which I saw it on the screen, but twice as large. I try to reduce it, but the quality is lost. How can I take a screenshot on a Mac so that the output is the same piece of screen, in the same size as what I see and in the same quality?

Screenshot utility
In addition to the features described above, OS X has a special utility for saving screenshots. You can find it in Launchpad or through Spotlight search. Settings

The command line can also be found in the search bar under the name "Terminal".
Changing the location of saved images
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Documents/Screenshots && killall SystemUIServer
Instead of “~/Documents/Screenshots” you can put any path to the file. To return the default value, write “~/Desktop/”.
Remove shadows
defaults write com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool true && killall SystemUIServer
To return them back, instead of “write” we write “delete”.

An application that allows you not only to take screenshots, but also to edit them. The most popular tools are available to choose from, with which you can crop a photo, resize it, put text over the image, add arrows, markers, geometric shapes, highlight text or cover up an unnecessary fragment.
In most cases, this will be enough to not launch Photoshop and quickly bring the image to the desired form.
When it comes to taking screenshots, you have everything you need: a screenshot of the entire screen or an area of it, and a screenshot with a timer. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to take a snapshot of the selected application window, as in the standard OS X utility.

Third-party methods for taking screenshots on MAC
In addition to the built-in tools for creating screenshots, you can install and use third-party applications for the same purposes. Typically, such programs give you a wider range of options.
So in the Share Bucket you can add arrows, circles, “blur” and other things to freshly created screenshots. Jing and Snapz Pro X allow you to record screencasts (videos from your desktop) and make it possible to automatically upload finished images to cloud services Dropbox, etc.
