TOP 6 translators from English – review of the most popular services and programs for translation

The English-language Internet is an order of magnitude larger than the Russian-language segment of the network.
However, for many users the language barrier becomes an insurmountable obstacle to obtaining the necessary information. I myself prefer to look for information on foreign sites, since most often in RuNet either the necessary information simply is not available, or the same note is reprinted from site to site with minor changes. There is an excellent tool that allows you to access any foreign sites - this is Google Translator. I’m sure there are other services, but personally, I’ve been using Google Translate for a long time, so I’ll tell you about this service.

Translate.ru (PROMT)

This service from PROMT supports about 19 languages and rightfully occupies a leading position in the market. The program can translate individual words, popular and common expressions, as well as entire text. The user will be able to receive a higher-quality translation after specifying the topic.

There's also an integrated dictionary that shows detailed grammar help and examples of how a word can be used in context. The program can be integrated into a website as a widget or button to translate the entire site.

Pros:

  • you can improve the translation by clarifying the topic;
  • knows how to translate web pages;
  • contains built-in textbooks and grammar references.

Minuses:

  • 3000 character limit.

Acquaintance

There are now a huge number of translators, but most of them are web services and work only when connected to the Internet, and among the functions they offer only the main feature - text translation. For 2020, this is no longer enough, and many people lack an offline application with advanced functionality. In my opinion, the new PROMT Master 18 for Windows OS is just such a solution.

Beginning of work

Having downloaded the PROMT Master application distribution kit from the official website, I immediately began the installation. This will require about 5 GB of free memory on the built-in disk, taking into account the fact that the installation file takes up 1 GB, and when unpacking the application and installing it directly, you need more than two GB. The installation process itself is as simple as possible - any clerk can handle it.

As a result of the installation, we get a nice shortcut on the desktop with the PROMT Master multifunctional translator.

An introductory window welcomes us and prompts us to quickly jump to three key features of the translator, namely:

  • Text translation;
  • Translation of documents;
  • Dictionary search.

We will definitely pay attention to each function of the application, but let’s talk about everything in order.

The PROMT Master interface is presented in a form familiar to us, especially after reviews of mobile applications. Everything matches the new Windows design. On the left there is a narrow panel with icons that provide access to application elements and its settings, and the entire opposite side is our work area.

We will start with the simplest thing - text translation. Switch to the appropriate tab, select the language and enter the text. Unfortunately, there is no support for voice input, as in mobile translators. Therefore, all information will have to be entered manually or copied from somewhere.

But the program has the ability to instantly translate text and can automatically detect the input language.

To get the best result, you need to specify one of thirteen text topics, for example, cars, music, sports, and so on, or delegate the selection of topics to PROMT Master.

Since we started talking about languages, the application currently supports full-fledged work with 14 languages. Let's list them:

  • English;
  • Arab;
  • Spanish;
  • Italian;
  • Kazakh;
  • Chinese;
  • Korean;
  • German;
  • Portuguese;
  • Russian;
  • Turkish;
  • Finnish;
  • French;
  • Japanese.

Most of them work offline, but to translate into Arabic, Chinese and some other languages you will need an Internet connection. These languages are less common and require a separate dictionary database, so to save memory, the developers did not integrate these languages into the translator, leaving them in the online database.

Google Translate

The service from Google specialists is capable of translating parts or entire web pages into 103 languages. In terms of the number of dictionaries and available functions, Google Translator is the most functional and versatile service today.

If you translate individual words, the service automatically switches to online dictionary mode, offering alternatives with a brief description of each word, showing transcription and transliteration, and also providing voiceovers.

Pros:

  • large language base;
  • presence of transcription and transliteration;
  • support for voiceover function.

Minuses:

  • limits text size to 5000 characters;
  • The translation of web pages is lame, most often incorrect.

Yandex translate

It is both a dictionary and a service for translating large texts and web pages. For each word, several options for the meaning of the word in another language and a selection of synonyms are offered.

A useful feature is that the program can translate text from an image and supports both voice and text input. It is worth noting the option to predict words by meaning, which significantly saves time when entering text.

There is also a mobile app available on most platforms and support for more than 40 languages. The mobile version can work offline if you additionally install the program application.

Pros:

  • intuitive typing tips;
  • offers synonyms and alternatives;
  • offline mode.

Minuses:

  • There are languages that need improvement.

PROMT

PROMT Online Translator offers fewer languages (16 in total) than other services. But it has other nice features. For example, the program can automatically recognize the language. There is also a choice of topics, which simplifies the processing of words with different meanings.

You can copy and paste a snippet, check spelling, and view a dictionary. There is also a virtual keyboard. It will come in handy if you open the site on a tablet or smartphone. PROMT is also a program that is easy to download and install on your computer. The application is paid. You can order professional translation from OneHour Translation.

Multitran

A key feature of the service is a forum where service users can ask for help and advice.

The program provides detailed translation, selects a list of synonyms for words, supports both voice and text input of information (plus there is a “listen” function).

There is a line-by-line translation option: if the program finds a consistent expression in a line, it is additionally highlighted, and an explanation is shown in the footnote.

Pros:

  • a forum where you can ask for help with translation;
  • an extensive database for searching synonyms;
  • explanation of set expressions.

Minuses:

  • users note instability in the service during business hours;
  • a lot of unnecessary information.

Reverso

Service for translation into 10+ languages of the world online. There is a translation option on the program website, a browser extension and a mobile version to choose from.

The program is suitable for simple texts that do not contain specific terminology, idiomatic and slang expressions, since the developers do not guarantee high-quality translation. This is especially true for articles with highly specialized terminology.

You can translate in several modes, depending on the tasks set by the user. For example, there is a regular dictionary with columns for entering texts, a section for words and phrases, and also a check for word forms.

Pros:

  • there is a possibility to check grammar;
  • translates from downloaded files and web pages;
  • You can send the transfer by mail.

Minuses:

  • Suitable only for short and simple texts.

Microsoft Translator

Microsoft's service supports more than 60 languages. In addition to the browser version, there is a mobile application for Android, iOS, and Apple Watch. The mobile version has an offline mode; you just need to download dictionaries.

The service translates not only texts, but also voice messages, photographs and screenshots. For each word the program offers alternatives.

The program also offers the user special phrase books and various guides.

Pros:

  • large base of supported languages;
  • synchronous function;
  • there is a voice translation function;
  • recognizes text in photographs;
  • There is synchronization across different applications.

Minuses:

  • the translation function from a picture or screenshot is not fully developed

SYSTRANet: file translator

Another language translator, SYSTRAnet, provides not only a text translator but also a file translator. Simply upload a document, such as an MS Word DOCX file, and then re-upload it once the translation is complete to get the document in the new language.

This translator is ideal for translating your resume or reading foreign documents such as reference manuals in English or your native language.

What we like:

  • Fast file transfers
  • Converted files retain their formatting
  • Translates regular text too
  • Includes a dictionary
  • Supports common languages
  • The translated files can be sent to you by email or you can download them

What we don't like:

  1. Text translation is not automatic
  2. You can only choose from a dozen languages
  3. Requires a (free) user account to transfer files
  4. The SYSTRAnet translator is very useful considering that most translation sites only allow text to be translated by copy/paste. However, with this you don't have to, for example, copy everything from your resume and then paste it into a conversion website so you can then paste it back into your resume. Just upload the file to translate it all; even the formatting will remain the same.

SYSTRANet

The so-called old-timer service, which has been offering its services on the online market for more than 40 years. It can work on various platforms: from stationary versions for personal computers to servers. Provides translation services into more than 130 languages, and thanks to its extensive capabilities, it is integrated by default on Samsung Galaxy S and Note series devices.

The service is capable of self-learning, which allows the user to customize it as much as possible. Can translate texts, web pages and downloaded files (txt, htm, rtf). For high-quality translation, you can choose a thematic dictionary or create a custom one.

Pros:

  • multi-platform service (works on Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS);
  • capable of self-learning;
  • translates not only texts, but also files and Internet pages;
  • there are thematic dictionaries;
  • There is a function for translating RSS feeds.

Minuses:

  • text size is limited to 1000 words;
  • information about the resource is only in English.

Website translation from English to Russian

Good afternoon everyone. When searching for some information on the Internet, we mainly use search engines. They respond to our requests and display the results. Most of the sites offered will be in Russian. It is very rare to see a portal in a foreign language listed in search results.

But sometimes there are cases when you followed a link in some article or your friends recommended some interesting resource to you, you go and end up, for example, on an English-language site. In this case, how to translate the site into Russian? If you speak English, then everything is fine. You can familiarize yourself and read the information located on the site. And if your knowledge is not enough to understand what the site page is about, then you can use online translation. Both Yandex and Google have similar functions. Let's start with Google.

Translation of website and text using Google.

To quickly translate a website, I recommend using the Google Chrome browser, since the browser itself already has a website translation function. Initially, it is enabled. But to check, go to your browser settings at chrome://settings/ Offer page translations ” checkbox is checked.

Now we open, for example, the website of the National Geographic ( ://www.nationalgeographic.com ). As you can see, everything is in English. When you open such sites, the browser itself automatically suggests translating the site. This notification appears as usual in the upper right corner of the browser. If there is no such notification, we may ask the browser to translate the site. To do this, click on the translation icon on the right in the address bar

A notification appears: Translate page? You can agree or refuse. If you click on the small arrow to the right of “No”, you can set additional translation options for this site. Basic settings can be configured by clicking on the “ Options

Here you can specify which language the page should be translated into and check the “Always translate” checkbox. In this case, the browser will translate all pages in English automatically.

To translate a page, just click “ Translate ”. The page will be translated into Russian.

It is worth noting that the translation will be incomplete and fluent. And even if he is unprofessional, the meaning can be understood. When you hover over a word, sentence, paragraph of text, the original text will be shown. When you go to other pages, everything will be automatically translated after they are fully loaded. To return to the original state of the site, click “ Show original ” in the top notification.

Online Google translator

If you just need to translate text or a paragraph from a website, you can use the Google translator online service - https://translate.google.ru/

Go to this page and enter a piece of text in the left field, for example, from the National Geographic website

And immediately simultaneous translation will appear in the right field. Thanks to the top bar above the right margin, you can set a different translation language. If you hover over any translated word, the original word will be highlighted on the left. This word can be replaced with another translation option. To do this, click on it and select another word from the list.

The panel under the translation text allows you to immediately copy it, translate it into Latin, listen to it and share it on social networks.

Yandex translator of texts and websites.

The Yandex service has something similar. Thanks to it, you can also translate text and websites. To do this, go to the service page - https://translate.yandex.ru

At the top of the screen there are links to translate TEXT (default) (1) and website. The translation of the text has many similarities from the Google service. There are also 2 fields - one contains the original, the translation on the right. To change the translation language, click on the word RUSSIAN (2) and select another language. The panel (3) for saving, copying, and speaking text is very similar. Also, when you select a translation word, the original word is highlighted.

Now let's translate the site. To do this, click on SITE and indicate the site address.

And press the “ Translate ” button. The site will load and be translated.

See also “Free translator - Dicter”

Now we can read and view the resource. And even if the translation is not always perfect, it is still possible to understand. When you go to the next pages of the site, they will be automatically translated. Also, when you hover your mouse over the text, the original text is shown.

Use the browser extension to translate the site into Russian - ImTranslator.

This is how you can easily and quickly view a foreign website without knowing the language thanks to the above services.

That's all. See you soon and have a great time!

The desire for power is as inherent in man as the admiration of power over oneself. The first property makes us tyrants, the second - slaves.
