Sticky keys on the keyboard - how to disable/enable: step-by-step instructions. The computer shows stuck keys: what should I do? Sticky keys in games: how to cause, cancel?

What is Sticky Keys

This is a special mode for users who, due to limited capabilities, find it difficult to press several keys at the same time.
With it, they can use combinations like Ctrl + C or Ctrl + V by pressing the keys in sequence. The problem is that a window asking you to enable sticky mode may appear unnecessarily and be terribly annoying. It is triggered by pressing Shift five times. This happens especially often when playing on the computer. But the instructions listed below will help you quickly disable this mode.

Sticky keys on laptop

Let's look at how to insert and replace the Caps lock, Shift, Ctrl and spacebar keys on two different keyboards. The first keyboard is similar to HP or Asus.

The second is one of the Asus keyboard options.

Let's start with the second one. To remove the button we need something thin and sharp, such as a small screwdriver. Let's try removing the Ctrl key.

To do this, lift the edge of the key with a screwdriver and, helping with your hand, carefully lift it and after a click it is removed.

There are no metal brackets here, it's just a regular plastic button.

It is also very easy to put into place, just apply it and press until it clicks.

Let's repeat the same thing with the Shift key.

It also does not have any metal support, just a regular plastic button.

It is put into place in exactly the same way: apply and press the button until it clicks.

The Caps Lock key on this keyboard can be removed and installed in the same way, no difficulties.

Let's try to repeat this procedure with a space. Carefully use a screwdriver to unclip the top part and try to look inside. The spacebar cannot be easily removed; it has a so-called “yoke” at the bottom - a metal wire, and it seems to be held in place only on one side.

To disconnect it, you need to carefully pick up the key from below, lift it slightly and move it to the left, or simply bend the key one by one on each side.

So, the key is removed. In the middle we see an amplifier, made to prevent the key from bending. We see the key fastening with small hooks on the sides, which are attached to the corresponding loops.

To put the key in place, you need to insert these hooks into the loops and press until you hear a characteristic click.

Let's see how this is done on another keyboard, which, judging by the appearance of the buttons, will have stiffening brackets. Let's start with a space. We proceed in exactly the same way as with the previous one, namely, carefully lift the edges of the space using a small screwdriver, starting from the top. The key is held on by brackets. Let's see how to disconnect it. In this case, in addition to the stiffening rib, the key has 2 fasteners.

To insert the key into place, you need to secure both fasteners.

First, insert the lower brackets into the corresponding grooves, then the upper ones, and very carefully press the button until a characteristic click is heard so that not a single bracket falls out of its groove.

Let's try to detach the Shift key on this keyboard.

Carefully pry the key off with a screwdriver, starting from the top.

A bracket is also visible from below, which is attached to special latches.

To remove the button, we insert a thin screwdriver under the brackets in these latches and in one motion unfasten them one by one.

To put the button back, we insert the bracket into the latches accordingly and press the key until it clicks.

Other buttons on this keyboard are attached according to the same principle, the only difference is in the number of latches.

There can be one on a regular button and two or three on large buttons.

Identifying the cause of sticky buttons

The keys on a laptop may not work properly due to various reasons, which can be either software or mechanical. The main ones are the following:

  1. If the button, under the action of the spring-loaded element, cannot immediately return to its original state after pressing, this often indicates that debris or sticky liquid has gotten under it.
  2. Overheating of the device in gaming applications is often the cause of strange behavior of keys held down for a long time on a laptop, for example, “W”.
  3. A similar problem appears if this mode for people with disabilities is activated in the OS itself. In this case, sticking can be disabled in the appropriate settings.

These are the most common causes of the problem described, with the exception, perhaps, of a physical breakdown of the input device - damage to the board tracks, button lift, etc.

Sticky keys - how to disable them on Windows XP

In the good old Windows XP, everything is done very simply and quickly. You need to hold down the Shift key or some other key a couple of times and wait for the window about stuck keys to appear. In the window that appears, just go to “Settings”.

A section with special features opens. Find the “Keyboard” parameter, go to the “Settings” item, located in the “Sticky Keys” field.

In the next window, you need to uncheck the option “Use this inclusion method.” You can also turn off all other options, such as the annoying beeping sound. Click OK, everything is ready.

Why do you need Sticky Keys in Windows?

Sticky Keys mode enabled in Windows allows you to use alternate key presses to combine them together.

For example, a user needs to simultaneously press the Ctrl+C keys to copy text. And if the keys get stuck, you can first press Ctrl and then C. This may seem stupid, because these keys are located next to each other and are not difficult to reach. What if you need to write a capital letter N? not everyone can reach it with SHIFT held down with one hand. You can use Caps Lock - you say. But you will have to constantly switch it before each capital letter.

That's why sticky keys are needed in Windows - it makes working with the keyboard more comfortable, under certain conditions.
