Important: cubic capacity for 1 m³ is a rather mathematical term in construction, since outwardly, for example, two cubic meters of wood may look like eight slats with a cross section of 200 mm x 200 mm x 6 m laid parallel on a pallet.

A ready-made cubature of a board or timber has long been used when calculating the amount or volume of wood. The starting point for such documentation was the creation of GOST 2708-75 for round timber (round timber). Using these tables, it is much easier to calculate the cubic capacity of round timber, boards, timber or other construction wood. To calculate the exact volume of purchased wood, it is enough to know the dimensions, diameter and/or cross-section of the lumber.

GOST 2708-75 helps in calculating the volume of logs with a diameter of 10–95 mm in increments of 5 mm. The volume can be calculated for logs with a length of 3–120 m. For lumber for export, the ISO 4480-83 cubator is used, according to which the volume of logs with a length of 4–79 meters can be calculated. For unsanded logs, the volume is calculated based on the arithmetic mean between the largest and smallest diameter of a batch of round timber. Using the cubic capacity table for round timber, beams or boards is quite simple: you need to find the cell where the column with the diameter and the row with the footage of lumber intersect. So, for 6 meters of round timber with a diameter of 20 cm, the tabulated volume will be equal to 0.249 m³.

The same cubature can be implemented in the form of a table for any type of wood and lumber, so as not to use a calculator unnecessarily or for lack of an appropriate computer program. A full-fledged cubic table for all types of lumber is a very large table, which is quite difficult to navigate and takes a long time to use. Therefore, in everyday use, tables with specific data for specific lumber or even just a few required positions are more popular.
