When installing a new program or a modern game on a computer, we often forget that we purchased our PC several years ago, and its capabilities may not be compatible with the requirements of the installed applications.

Operating system versions.

You need to understand that different OS versions support different amounts of RAM.

For example, Windows XP 32-bit OS supports only 4 GB of RAM, although in fact only 3.12–3.5 GB will be used for work, the rest of the space is allocated for other functions.

If you have Windows XP 64-bit installed, for example, Edition, then it already supports RAM up to 128 GB. But in this case, much depends on the model of the motherboard and processor, which must support 64-bit operating mode, as well as 8, 16, 32 or 64 GB of RAM.

There is simply no need to support large amounts of physical memory (192 GB) in ordinary PCs, but there is already room for expansion in the future.

Now, as for other OSes.

Windows 7 x 32 bit will only see up to 4 GB, or more precisely, from 3.12 to 3.7. Therefore, there is no need to buy RAM sticks with a total memory volume exceeding these figures.

Windows 7 x 64 bit Professional and Ultimate sees up to 192 GB of RAM, Home edition x 64 bit – 16 GB.

But to enjoy the capabilities of these operating systems, your PC must have a 64-bit processor and the same motherboard.

Versions of Windows 8 x 32 and x 64 bit see the same amount of RAM as similar versions of the “seven”.

There have been situations when, to increase the speed of the computer, RAM strips with a total capacity of 12 GB were installed - Windows 8 Pro x 64 bit.

But in fact, the system only saw 7.96 GB. When checking in the BIOS, it was found that the motherboard supports no more than 8 GB of RAM.

If we touch on the topic of Windows 10 x 32 and x 64 bit, then it is assumed that this system will support the amount of RAM in the same way as in versions 8 and 8.1.

In order to determine how much RAM is loaded, you need to go to the “Task Manager” section. In Windows 7, this is done by pressing the hot keys “Ctrl+Alt+Delete”. Next, click “Launch Task Manager” and go to the “Performance” section.

Let's talk about the processor.

Upgrading the processor also takes place in the process of achieving the goal of increasing computer performance.

But if, for example, you have a dual-core processor installed with a frequency of 2.2 GHz, and you replace it with a similar one - 2.66 GHz, then in this case no obvious results will be achieved.

You need to replace the old processor with a new one only if the frequency of the latter is at least 30% higher than the previous one.

Or provided that the two-nuclear one is replaced by 4-x, with an increase in the frequency of the latter by 10-20%.

It is worth mentioning about 64-bit processors. They are much more productive than 32s, but they are also more expensive. Also, the motherboard must support 64-bit operating mode.

If these conditions are not met, upgrading the processor to increase PC performance is not advisable.

You can take a risk.

If you don't have the funds to buy a new processor, you can try to overclock the old one.

This is achieved by increasing the operating frequency of the motherboard bus, which interacts with the processor.

Settings can be changed in the BIOS.

But this must be done carefully. Be sure to check the reliability of the processor cooler before overclocking.

HDD.

How much the hard drive affects the performance of the computer can be understood from the example.

A client contacted me and had problems with his computer; it was working very slowly. The computer had two IDA hard drives installed with a total capacity of 500 GB. One disk was connected as “Master”, the other as “Slave”.

The spindle speed on both is 5400 rpm. 2 Giga of RAM was quite enough to run 32-bit Windows 7 in normal mode.

Since the disks were already more than 5 years old, it was decided to diagnose them with a small utility CrystalDiskInfo v.6.1.8. The results were terrifying, the program immediately informed us that the state was “ALARM”.

Just for fun, an attempt was made to reinstall the system, but the seven did not even want to install, displaying a message that the hard drives were faulty.

Therefore, it was decided to install one 1 TB instead of two old hard drives.

The model chosen was Toshiba 1TB 7200rpm 32MB DT01ACA100 3.5 SATA III.

The main selection criteria were: a clipboard volume of 32 MB, a spindle speed of 7200 rpm and a total size of 1 TB.

The SATA interface was supported by the motherboard.

As a result of such changes, the computer was unrecognizable; its operating speed was increased by approximately 2 times.

TIP : do not allow two hard drives to be installed on the PC at the same time on the same channel, this will greatly reduce the speed of the computer.

SSD drives.

It is worth noting that since 2014, solid-state SSD drives have become very popular.

Although they are still more expensive than previously produced models with a rotating spindle, their advantages are obvious.

This is a longer service life, which can reach 1 million hours, a huge data transfer speed of up to 500 Mb/s, lower power consumption, quiet operation and, of course, greater reliability.

For comparison, you can look at the characteristics of the Kingston HyperX Fury 240GB 2.5″ SATAIII MLC (SHFS37A/240G) solid state drive.

Their only drawbacks so far are a small amount of memory, which many will find insufficient, and a higher price compared to other analogues.

But over time, we think this problem will be solved. Once upon a time, flash drives also had a memory capacity of no more than 1 GB, but now you can easily buy 64 GB flash memory.

Therefore, installing a solid-state SSD drive on your computer will significantly speed up its operation.

Video card.

A lot depends on the performance of the video card. This includes the opportunity to play advanced games, watch a movie in HD or FHD quality, and work with powerful graphics applications such as Adobe Photoshop CC, CorelDRAW Graphics and others.

If the video or game is slow on your PC, first of all, pay attention to whether the drivers are installed on the video card.

If the drivers are installed, but the game runs only at a low resolution and slows down, try updating the drivers to a more current version.

This can save the situation; otherwise, you need to replace the video card.

When upgrading, pay attention to the following indicators::

  1. The interface, for example, PCI-Express x16 3.0, it must be supported by the motherboard;
  2. Bus width, the higher, the better;
  3. The amount of built-in memory and its type;
  4. Core frequency, measured in MHz;
  5. Memory frequency, for example, 5010 or 7010 MHz;
  6. Memory bandwidth;
  7. Supported interfaces for connecting external devices, for example, a TV via HDMI.

When it turns out that all stages have been completed and the goal cannot be achieved, then it is necessary to reconsider the goal.

b) an error at any level leads to the fact that all actions at lower levels will be invalid, i.e. the error there cannot be eliminated.

There are calls and nothing more. There were these before: “Doubling GDP”, “Modernization” and many others, maybe less noticeable, but their result is still the same - there is no further movement. It would seem that there is a “Strategy 2020”, which assumed “a GDP growth rate of at least 5%, significantly higher than the growth rate of developed countries.” The latest government forecasts indicate a growth rate of less than 3% until 2030, but this is a movement to nowhere. Yes, these are the growth rates of developed countries, but Russia still lags behind them (if we consider the movement since 1990).

Therefore, if the achievement of the goal set by the President is organized in the same way as in European countries, then we will get nothing but 20% unemployment and youth riots (this process may be somewhat softened by the demographic hole that will occur during this period).

It would be possible to end at this point, but the reader will naturally have a question: “What to do?” Firstly, the answer to this question is not according to the rank of the author, and secondly, as my failed dissertation supervisor said: “Who will get the money for this”?
