How to remove and reinsert the laptop keys shift, space, etc.

Button functionality

  • Letters are usually used to write the desired text
  • Shift on the keyboard is designed to use uppercase, for example to write capital letters
  • Enter performs the function of confirming various actions in applications
  • Caps Lock locks or removes uppercase
  • DELETE deletes anything you selected
  • FN Lock is mainly available only on a laptop and activates the function keys F1-F12:

Activates the monitor or projector projection, disconnects and connects to Wi-Fi, adjusts the screen brightness, makes the sound quieter or louder. Typically, keyboard keys have a description for some purpose or look like pictures on the keyboard.

  • ESC cancels an action or exits programs
  • Ctrl and Alt can only use the keyboard in synergy with certain buttons
  • Back Space is for removing the previous character
  • Windows opens "START"

NOTE! The laptop panel performs many important aspects besides standard actions, but also saves you time. The whole thing itself is not simple, and we will help you understand it for further use.

Please note that the attached photo may not be similar to yours, here is an example of an hp laptop

REFERENCE! Did you know what the number of the pressed key on the keyboard is called? This is a number called “Scan Code”, assigned to all buttons that have their own unique code. After using a key, the keyboard driver receives information about the press and understands what exactly you press over and over again.

Before we start looking at the areas of use in the work area, we will show you a diagram of the keyboard in paint

Keyboard problem

The first reason is obvious. It occurs quite often, but it manifests itself not only in the fact that “Shift” on the keyboard does not work. The point is that all equipment can wear out. It is likely that the failure of the specified key to work is a consequence of a malfunction of the connected device. What should I do? You can either install a new keyboard and check the functionality of the specified button, or try to repair the old one. As practice shows, the first method of solving the problem is the most effective. What's next?

Alphanumeric keys

The largest layout on the panel. The keys depict letters and different symbols on the keyboard indicating certain actions. The keyboard on a Russian-language laptop also contains additional symbols for English letters, which can be switched using the shift + alt button. Entering capital letters in a document is done by pressing shift on the keyboard and holding it down, then typing the required button on the keys. The shift key on the panel is used to enter various text characters, for example, a set of punctuation marks or parentheses.

The purpose of the laptop keyboard keys has many connections and we will discuss their combinations below.

Checking for viruses in the operating system

Also, one should not exclude the possibility that viruses affected the Shift key on the laptop keyboard.

The simplest, fastest and most effective way to check your computer for viruses is to download and run the Cureit program, which will scan and delete all suspicious and malicious files.

In order to download this utility, follow the link: https://free.drweb.ru/download+cureit+free/?lng=ru

After downloading, launch the program and click on the “Scan” button. After scanning is complete, view the list of found files and delete them.

Control key combinations

You can use the control key on a laptop keyboard as follows:

  • End moves to the end of the text
  • Home returns up
  • ALT + DEL launches Task Manager
  • The shift key on the PC's work panel can replace ALT+DEL with SHIFT+ESC and perform the same function, but it is more convenient because the location of the keys on the keyboard is closer.
  • ESC launches the START menu

Do you feel like you'll have to use your mouse less and do less extra work? The keys on your computer keyboard can do most of your work without clicking your mouse, without having to take time away from your work. Let's go back and see what else we can do using the Ctrl key.

  • S saves the document in the open window
  • P helps to print the file
  • C copies the selected area
  • V pastes the previously selected document or text
  • Z undoes last action

Disable programs that interfere with keyboard input

Very often, the problem that the Shift button does not work on a laptop can be caused by third-party programs that make changes or add some parameters to the process of entering text from the keyboard.

An example of such programs:

  • Punto Switcher.
  • Key Switcher.
  • SimpleSwitcher.
  • Arum Switcher.

This list contains basic and frequently used programs that can affect the Shift key and subsequently cause it to fail.

The easiest way to deal with such programs is to remove them from your computer.

If you do not want to delete these utilities, you can use the task manager and simply remove the task of this program. To do this, right-click on the control panel and select “Task Manager” from the drop-down list. After this, the manager window will open, then in the processes tab you need to find the process of the program that is installed on your computer (the name of the process is similar to the name of the utility) and by right-clicking on it, select “End task”.

This way you can remove the reason for disabling the Shift button.

Moving with keys

Special buttons on the working panel, located in a separate block in the form of arrows, are used to move the cursor through items.

This also includes other buttons on the panel:

  • Home Moves the cursor to the very top of the text
  • End If you use it, then you go down
  • PageUp/PageDown moves the cursor to the window up or down of your text document
  • The laptop keyboard has a shortened version of the Print Screen key – PrnSc: takes a screenshot of your screen and saves it to the clipboard
  • The arrows on both the calculator keyboard with NumLock turned off and the main keyboard keys move you in the direction the arrow is pointing

How to remove and reinsert the laptop keys shift, space, etc.

Let's look at how to insert and replace the Caps lock, Shift, Ctrl and spacebar keys on two different keyboards. The first keyboard is similar to HP or Asus.

The second is one of the Asus keyboard options.

Let's start with the second one. To remove the button we need something thin and sharp, such as a small screwdriver. Let's try removing the Ctrl key.

To do this, lift the edge of the key with a screwdriver and, helping with your hand, carefully lift it and after a click it is removed.

There are no metal brackets here, it's just a regular plastic button.

It is also very easy to put into place, just apply it and press until it clicks.

Let's repeat the same thing with the Shift key.

It also does not have any metal support, just a regular plastic button.

It is put into place in exactly the same way: apply and press the button until it clicks.

The Caps Lock key on this keyboard can be removed and installed in the same way, no difficulties.

Let's try to repeat this procedure with a space. Carefully use a screwdriver to unclip the top part and try to look inside. The spacebar cannot be easily removed; it has a so-called “yoke” at the bottom - a metal wire, and it seems to be held in place only on one side.

To disconnect it, you need to carefully pick up the key from below, lift it slightly and move it to the left, or simply bend the key one by one on each side.

So, the key is removed. In the middle we see an amplifier, made to prevent the key from bending. We see the key fastening with small hooks on the sides, which are attached to the corresponding loops.

To put the key in place, you need to insert these hooks into the loops and press until you hear a characteristic click.

Let's see how this is done on another keyboard, which, judging by the appearance of the buttons, will have stiffening brackets. Let's start with a space. We proceed in exactly the same way as with the previous one, namely, carefully lift the edges of the space using a small screwdriver, starting from the top. The key is held on by brackets. Let's see how to disconnect it. In this case, in addition to the stiffening rib, the key has 2 fasteners.

To insert the key into place, you need to secure both fasteners. First, insert the lower brackets into the corresponding grooves, then the upper ones, and very carefully press the button until a characteristic click is heard so that not a single bracket falls out of its groove.

Let's try to detach the Shift key on this keyboard.

Carefully pry the key off with a screwdriver, starting from the top.

A bracket is also visible from below, which is attached to special latches.

To remove the button, we insert a thin screwdriver under the brackets in these latches and in one motion unfasten them one by one.

To put the button back, we insert the bracket into the latches accordingly and press the key until it clicks.

Other buttons on this keyboard are attached according to the same principle, the only difference is in the number of latches. There can be one on a regular button and two or three on large buttons.

Blockage

Is the Shift button on or sticky? More precisely, is it not pressed the first time or does the computer basically not respond to this key? Then you should clean the keyboard. This phenomenon should not be scary. After all, this problem occurs often, especially if a person is used to eating right in front of a computer or laptop.

What's the matter? In the most common blockage. Every keyboard needs to be cleaned from time to time. Otherwise, its buttons begin to refuse to work. Including Shift. Therefore, users quite often advise each other, if any problems arise with the keyboard, to disassemble this component and clean it. Surprisingly, this method very often helps to get rid of problems that have arisen. But the possible reasons why “Shift” does not work on the keyboard do not end there.

Diagnostics using the Windows on-screen keyboard

The Windows On-Screen Keyboard will help you determine if the Shift key is being pressed and will let you know if it's a driver issue or if the keyboard is physically damaged.

First of all, you need to press the Win + R key combination and in the “Run” window that appears, write the command “osk.exe” and press Enter.

After which you will see a keyboard on the monitor screen. When you press any command button, you will be able to see this key highlight on the on-screen keyboard, this signals that the operating system understands and sees that you pressed this key. Now try pressing the Shift key and see if it lights up on the on-screen keyboard? If it is highlighted, then you should look for a problem in drivers, programs or viruses that prevent it from working in the operating system.

SHIFT does not work on laptop keyboard

One of the most important components of any computer is the keyboard.

The peculiarity of laptops is that it will be very difficult to change it in case of any problems - in any case, it is much more difficult than simply unplugging the plug of the old device and inserting the plug of the new one, as is done with stationary PCs.

What should you do if one or several buttons on your keyboard suddenly stop working, for example, the top row? Can I fix the situation myself and what will it take? You will learn about all this in this article.

Why SHIFT and other buttons on a laptop may not work

The first step is to determine the cause of the problem in order to decide what sequence of actions will be needed to fix it.

One of the most common reasons is a malfunction of the keyboard itself. This may be due to the natural wear and tear of the device over time, or due to incorrect connection.

In addition, clogs may occur, especially if you have a habit of eating or drinking while using the computer.

Dirt getting into the internal structure of the keyboard often leads to failure of one or even a whole row of keys - zero, arrows, Ctrl, Shift.

The latter are located at the very edge of the laptop and are very useful and often used.

The failure of the keys to respond may also be due to the presence of various viruses in the system. In such cases, the key can execute either an incomplete list of commands intended for it, or even those that it should not execute.

ATTENTION! The operation of the button is also influenced by the operating system - if this is a pirated version, then you should not be surprised at the presence of this and any other problems.

Or it may be that some settings in the system are set incorrectly. This problem has the simplest solution of all those presented above - you just need to go into the settings and change some important parameters that have a significant impact on the operation of the keyboard.

What to do if the Shift button does not work

When the Shift key does not work, the first step is to thoroughly diagnose the device and check the system for viruses.

This is quite simple to do - you need to use a special scanner, which is made publicly available by the manufacturers of the most famous and trusted antivirus manufacturers. After checking, it is recommended to install one of them in order to further protect yourself from the appearance of any malicious programs and utilities.

Now remove any viruses found.

Some laptops have special keyboard shortcuts that make it easy to accidentally switch the keyboard mode.

As a result, some keys will either be blocked or reassigned - meaning that they will perform completely different functions than they were intended for.

In this case, you need to return to the old mode by finding the hotkeys that work on your laptop model.

If the keyboard is clogged, you need to disassemble it and clean it thoroughly. There are a large number of instructions on the Internet for disassembling keyboards for each laptop, which can differ significantly from each other.

The same will need to be done if the control panel is broken. You may need to replace one of the contacts or the cable inside.

IMPORTANT! If you have a pirated version of the operating system, you will need to reinstall it. To do this, you need to find a high-quality version in which there will be no problems with the button triggering.

Actions if several buttons on the keyboard do not work

In general, all actions aimed at restoring the operation of the keyboard can be divided into two groups:

  • physical methods;
  • software methods.

If several keys do not work at once - Ctrl, with letters, then it is not necessary to completely change the keyboard. Therefore, we will consider in detail some ways to return it to operation.

Physical methods

Physical methods include pressing certain keys, cleaning, and actions associated with the need to disassemble the device.

In the first case, you can try holding Fn and Num Lock. Usually this combination allows you to return the control panel to the desired mode.

If this does not help, you need to remove the keyboard using a screwdriver. Before doing this, be sure to turn off the device and remove the power source from it. If there is obvious mechanical damage, you will need to replace the keyboard cable.

Under the plate is a microcontroller. It should be cleaned and dried thoroughly.

When does the Shift key not work or some other key is not recognized?

However, how do you feel about the whole troubleshooting procedure if some of your keys are not recognized by the operating system you are using? This could be the result of some missing keyboard drivers or a delay in updating each one. As noted earlier, some keyboards come with software and it is necessary for you to install them to avoid several keyboard errors, one of them being the key change not working.

You can also do the following:

  • Open the keyboard by clicking the Start button. Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Keyboard.
  • Click on the Hardware tab and find the keyboard you are using, then double-click above it.
  • You should then click on the Driver tab and select Update Driver and then wait for the instructions to follow.
  • You may be prompted to reboot your system, if so you should.
