    The easiest way to switch to another mode is to click on the icon on the status bar. This method is always available, literally with one click, no matter what tab you are in. To do this, you just need to left-click on any of the two mode switching icons, except for the “Page” icon. These switches are located in the status bar to the left of the zoom slider.

  • After this, the numbering inscription will no longer be visible on the worksheet.
  • There is also an option to switch the mode using the tools on the ribbon.

    Move to the “View” tab.

  • On the ribbon in the “Book View Mode” settings block, click on the “Normal” or “Page Layout” button.
  • After this, the page mode will be disabled, which means that the background numbering will also disappear.

    Method 2: Cleaning Headers and Footers

    There is also the opposite situation, when when working with a table in Excel, the numbering is not visible, but it appears when printing the document. It can also be seen in the document preview window. To go there, you need to go to the “File” tab, and then select “Print” in the left vertical menu. The document preview area will be located on the right side of the window that opens. This is where you can see whether the printed page will be numbered or not. The numbers can be located at the top of the sheet, at the bottom, or in both positions at the same time.

    This type of numbering is performed using headers and footers. These are hidden fields, the data in which is visible on print. They are used just for numbering, inserting various notes, etc. At the same time, in order to number the page, you do not need to enter a number on each page element. It is enough on one page, being in the header-footer mode, to write the following expression in any of the three upper or three lower fields:

    After this, all pages will be numbered consecutively. Thus, to remove this numbering, you just need to clear the contents of the footer field and save the document.

      First of all, to complete our task, we need to switch to footer mode. This can be done using several options. Move to the “Insert” tab and click on the “Header and Footer” button, which is located on the ribbon in the “Text” tool block.

    In addition, you can see the headers and footers by going to the page layout mode, through the already familiar icon in the status bar. To do this, you need to click on the central icon for switching viewing modes, which is called “Page Layout”.

    Another option is to go to the “View” tab. There you should click on the “Page Layout” button on the ribbon in the “Book View Modes” tool group.

    Whichever option is selected, you will see the contents of the header and footer. In our case, the page number is located in the upper left and lower left header and footer fields.

    Simply place the cursor in the appropriate field and press the Delete button on the keyboard.

    As you can see, after this the numbering disappeared not only in the upper left corner of the page on which the header and footer was removed, but also on all other elements of the document in the same place. In the same way, we delete the contents of the footer. Place the cursor there and click on the Delete button.

    Now that all the data in the header and footer has been deleted, we can switch to normal operation. To do this, either in the “View” tab, click on the “Normal” button, or in the status bar, click on the button with exactly the same name.

    Don't forget to rewrite the document. To do this, just click on the icon, which looks like a floppy disk and is located in the upper left corner of the window.

    In order to make sure that the numbers have really disappeared and will not appear on print, move to the “File” tab.

  • In the window that opens, move to the “Print” section through the vertical menu on the left. As you can see, in the already familiar preview area, there is no page numbering in the document. This means that if we start printing the book, we will end up with sheets without numbering, which is what we needed to do.
  • In addition, you can disable headers and footers altogether.

      Go to the “File” tab. Move to the “Print” subsection. Print settings are located in the central part of the window. At the very bottom of this block, click on the words “Page Options”.

    The page settings window opens. In the “Header” and “Footer” fields, select the “(none)” option from the drop-down list. After that, click on the “OK” button at the bottom of the window.

    Numbering in OpenOffice

    In OpenOffice, navigation is intuitive, so numbering is created quickly:

    • On the top toolbar, open the “Insert” menu and select a header or footer.

    • A special field will appear at the top or bottom of the document. Click on it with the left mouse button.
    • On the right side of the toolbar, go to the “Styles” tab, where you need to determine the location of the number.

    • Go to “Insert” again, select “Field” – “Number...”. The sheets will display the numbers one by one.

    Removing a number from the 1st page is also quite simple:

    • In the right panel, in the “Styles” tab, open the border styles option.

    • In the list provided, double-click on the “First Page” option. The header and footer with the number “1” will be deleted.

    Problems removing number on first page in Excel 2003

    Unfortunately, in the 2003 version, the developers did not provide the ability to separately edit headers and footers on the first page, which often needs to be designed as a title page and the numbering removed.

    When you try to remove the contents of the header and footer from there, the numbering is deleted on the entire sheet of the Excel document. Therefore, owners of this version have to come up with solutions to the problem, for example, someone suggests making the title page in a separate file in Excel.

    To make sure that the first page has a blank header and the rest are numbered, it is convenient to use the “Print” panel (File - Print). In this panel, you need to select the “Entire book” radio button, and then click the “View” button in the lower left corner of the print panel. “The whole book” means all pages, including the title page. A window will open in which you can see the entire contents of all sheets of the document. You can switch between them by clicking the “Next” and “Back” buttons in the upper left corner of the panel. If such a review has shown that the numbering is in accordance with the plan, you can print the book.

    Method three: numbering all pages except the first

    Now we will tell you how to put page numbers in the entire document, except for the first sheet.

    1. Go to the "Header and Footer" tab.
    2. On the tool ribbon, click on the “Options” button and there, check the box next to “Special header and footer for the first page.”
    3. After this, number the pages as described above.

    As you can see, all pages have their own number, except the first one. If you wish, you can number it separately, or you can leave it blank.
